It was horrible but look at us we are now. Today we are celebrating a community that comes together to rise from the ashes. Come out and enjoy it. This is a special edition of Sonoma County. It is friday morning and Sonoma County. The heart of what everyone is calling resiliency, character and charm. Is now opening its doors so that we can call home not only for the next hour but in the weeks and months ahead. Live in downtown hallsburg i am mike maze back. What a great way to start a friday morning here in hillsboro plaza. Asari vehicle and i do not say hello. I went to this great bakery and people told me to visit. My cap and was all fantastic. I got into a conversation with someone asked me are you here . And i said why not. This is what we do. We need to be here. We need to let the residents know that we are here for you. In good times and in bad. And let the people in the bay area know that the doors are open and in Sonoma County. The message is not back in business its still in business. Shop, eat, drink and stave you can. Have your friends and have them tell their friends. Is important to note that tours and heres huge. One in 10 jobs here depends on tourism. And that depends on you and those friends to support local communities. There are number the crews out here in sal castaneda. We are here for an action packed hour. One of thnames is Russian River brewery. Theyre doing something to relaunch an incredible product that was started a few years ago after the test fire. Morning mike. We are in the middle of wine country but to make beer appear as well. What you are talking about a few years ago the Russian River brewery came out with sonoma pride. It was there to help out the folks there were victims of that fire. 60 other breweries jumped on board. Reaching over Million Dollars in relief efforts. They are back at it with the kincaid fire and helping those folks out. So he joins us now youre the owner. Toes first and foremost this fire was home closer to home . The kincaid fire came within just over a mile from our area. And we are very grateful and fortunate that we had so many First Responders and firefighters from all over california and beyond to be in our community to help. How many square feet is this . We open just over year ago. It took us four years to develop it and build it and we opened in october 2018. Lets talk about sonoma pride. Are shocked on how that took off two years ago . We were. There were a lot of friends around the world reaching out asking how they could out. They decided to come in the fire that we were going to go to live self effort and the brown that we have cultivated. So we decided to license it to other breweries and let them make donations to our fire relief efforts. All the money saved in our Community Goes to local charities and we ended up buying manufactured homes for those who their homes at mobile home parks here. And really it was an amazing and heartwarming effort. Participated in a lot of charitable events and that was by far the most rewarding experience. The beer is fermenting right now. It will not be on top right now. Some of the proceeds will help out the folks with the kincaid fire as well. Were talking to some the owners of the vineyard here in windsor. Had to drink beer if youre in a beer pub. So will set back to you guys. The blind pig good as well. Coffee and pastry mode here for us. When you talk with the community youre talking about resiliency and coming together. Really cant look any further than this bakery here in sonoma square. It is called the laundry bakery. It is been here for 25 years. It has been hopping with all of the locals that know things are normal and great and ready to be full of business. I want to take you inside because its an incredible place in here. A steady crowd of people. Walk on in here with the Second Generation bakery that has been in the committee for much longer. The giving us a bit of wave here. Are you irregular . This is one of our favorite spots. Its clear to see why. Im glad you keep stopping by and giving the business. Thanks for talking to us were going to talk to the owner over here. This business like many others are struggling with the loss because of Power Outages and the perception. You have a great story here in terms of locals and those who stop by. This is an institution . Weve been here for the 26 years here. We have to get through everything. A great party here. It is a local place. Take a look around. Like clockwork people come in and at the other end we help the tourists that are coming in as well. You say hello joe hello keith hello sarah. You know who everyone is . Everyone has their own table in their own timetable. Their own exact coffee that they want. Its normal. I know you state open during the power outage and he made sure they were able to get their coffee. But you really still seeing a lot of here . We did stay open during the past two weeks and then those extra days. Because i mean its critically important that the community is helped out in the sense of normalcy that is so important to us. I hope the business words back in. And the tradition can continue with this family atmosphere and a sense of community that doesnt go away no matter what. Thank you claudia. I dont live in Sonoma County but i feel like ive raised my two children in sonoma plaza. We like to say we are fun parents. And would like to get out of the house. But its a great spot. Backyard Sonoma County it is fortunate that a lot of people come here to eat and drink. A lot of fine dining restaurants we have to wait months and months to get a reservation before it. They may not be the case found that could be good news. Sipping typically villette has a long list of people and now may be the time to call in . That is absolutely right. The chef here is ivan upand coming. He is already famous. So i can say that. He has a restaurant that is normally hard to get into. But you can get into it now. This is a beautiful spot. Coming up i will tell you about something new he is doing here in the square. But i do want to let you know that if you do want to come up and eat here in hills park they are open for business. One of the businesses that close was villette. There the square in evacuation and power years ago she said the closure was hard for her. It was very bad because im a single mother with four children and i dont have any family here. I spent a cold week without enough food for my son to eats. She had to stay with friends more than 100 miles away. Lost more than a weeks pay and was worried the whole time about her house burning down. Now that she is back at work she says it is taking time for her to feel normal again. It takes time because i was in shock for quite a bit thinking that this happened again. But im very happy to return and find everything is normal. Its a perception that everything got burned down. But perception is what is causing that wave. That secondtier were people are not wanting to go to hotels or come to estaurants. Chef and coosaery theyre t everyone who will listen on social media and by wordof mouth that hills berg is open for business. And now maybe your time to secure that normally tough to get reservation. If you come to villette you may want to try the restaurant signature scallop. This is one of those dishes where i would say it created the restaurant. A little bit of wheat and a bit of fennel. That is a beautiful pernod in there. Reporting with caviar chardonnay in champagne. The idea is the scallops steam inside that beautiful flavor. And that caviar adds a delicious rule delicious textural pop there. He says he sees the Silver Lining despite the hardship faced by the can never experience us again. But its also heartwarming to see the Community Coming together in such a manner and persevering. Workers a busy cooking again. And that they say is good news for everyone. I think the word is getting around for us. That we are in fact open for business. And we are not going anywhere. Norma alvarez says she is grateful to those coming back and the owners here for treating her like family. Its like my family and the owners have always supported me in everything. Mike and gus i will let you know that dustin villette is opening a restaurant in about a year right across from where you are. It is g to be calrants opening here. A lot of great businesses. If you want to eat in Sonoma County here in hallsburg you have plenty of options. Back to you guys. Thank you so much. From fine dining to everyday food we really have to focus on the daily lives of those people affected not just by Power Outages but also by the largest evacuation ever in Sonoma County. Talking to you about the food they put on the dinner table every night for your family and we need your help in providing that. I want to get the word out about the good word and keep on being done by the food bank. They said well over 25,000 people a week. They need our help in doing that. Heres how you can help. Is in berkeley boulevard and santa rosa. You can get the food barrel here theres one behind us on hillsboro plaza. But i cannot stress enough whether not you have 100 or thousand dollars to give. The family had to pack up and leave. And lets keep in mind a lot of these businesses close because they couldnt welcome guests. Sonoma county is still in business and open for business. But when you talk about t on th youre going to talk more about that specifically with the mayor of windsor and the vice mayor of hallsburg. But when we return, talk about the winery. That is one of the was hit hard by the kincaid fire. The owners that one rear going be sitting down with us right here in downtown hallsburg. You know when youre at ross and you realize its time your sister stopped borrowing your sweaters . Yeah thats yes for less. Stop stealing mine. Never. Holiday gifts everyones sure to love at 20 to 60 percent off Department Store prices. At ross. Yes for less. And you realize you are the the hostess with the mostest. You know when youre at ross yes yeah thats yes for less. Entertain in style all season long. It feels even better when you find it for lessat ross. Yes for less. Welcome back to nine on a gorgeous and chilly friday. Are taking a special trip to spot shine a bright spotlight on Sonoma County. Lets talk with the leaders of Sonoma County. Also oatmeal gold is the vice mayor here in your beautiful city of hallsburg. The queue for joining us. Certainly. Tell me about your message not just to california but the world. We faced a dire threat. But everything went beautifully as far as the Community Coming together. The city staff and the representatives all the way up the line getting us the resources that we needed and local restaurant wars who first had of activities fed from for the north and then later for the First Responders and it put them up here. The City Residents who all helped each other and evacuated. Promptly and smoothly to get out of the way of the partners to do their jobs. In a way this whole event has been quite reassuring because we faced the threat and everyone did what they needed to do. And it brought us together as a community. At one point you thought your entire town was going to go . N never go ight. Through thinking about we were going to lose our entire town. But thanks to the amazingly brave work of a couple hundred First Responders from all over the country they came in and were able to save every single thing in the town. Was great news all around. And all the counties that go through. Maybe more in the springtime moving forward . Its always great time to visit that. But now it is an especially good time. Because everyone is so excited about being together and enjoying our town its really great time to visit. There referred to it as the relaxed and welcoming sister. And better. A little bit too true. But when you look at the space this is what you are lookinto y county. What you think about those that dont know anything other than the headlines they read . Its a good way to describe it. Theres a lot more familyrun businesses here. Is kind of old school more than it used to be. Thats the great thing that we love about the many of the res wineries are all quite Close Friends here. The hardest part about it right now is to get the word out that we are open for business. In 2017 the second tragedy of the tubs fire was that the nation stopped coming here for a while. In reality, look behind us. It is gorgeous. And that is the thing that the best way for the people in the bay area can help us with the recovery is to come up here and enjoy our area. Hallsburg and windsor. Drink our wine and stay in our hotels. Eat in our amazing restaurants. I remember going to windsor waterworks as e going to drive right by on 101. So they have to stop doing that. Because you could spend an entire day winter in hallsburg and have a wonderful time. And thats if you really wanted to bring up as well. Is an amazing area where the winery is and our whole area here was surrounded by the fire. My family winery is reopening today finally and theres so much News Coverage in our area where there showing fire here. The reality is no structure burned in windsor. Of course the wilsons had their own problems but the reality is that we are open. Theres not a single one that is not open. Theres no single restaurant is not open. , and enjoy our area. Thank you congratulations. Digging in for a fight. We go to the front lines were 70 firefighters and volunteer firefighters battled the massive flames to save homes and farms and many other stuff here. I got you something. Ooooh even though we just started dating i find you so captivating and im done with hesitating lets see where this goes . This holiday, save on a gift that says it all during jareds black friday sale. Only at jared it takes a village to raise to build a bridge. To throw a baseball. To throw yourself into the unknown. To lose fear, to create hope. We believe that it takes a village of over 200thousand dedicated, passionate, driven medical and nonmedical professionals to deliver on our belief in total health for all. We are kaiser permanente. Thrive. Welcome back. There was a string of Power Outages and Sonoma County is more than open for business welcoming your smiling face and your dolla we look at those to save their own communities. We are talking about heroic efforts on their part. Is not about finding a storys about picking one. You dont have to look any further than the fire department. For the town of geyserville they push it into the town and this became the bullseye. They consume whatever was in and as the their neighbors. And as stood on the fire line the fire turned his family home to ash. It was such a numbness that i think staying on the job was the best thing to do at the time. And from my experience as a combat Medic Mission always comes first regardless of what happens. You to continue doing what were doing and theres no way we could stop it. For them the personal. They all had their own reasons for there working toward a full time position. I decided to use my g. I. Bill to go back to school to get my ent emt license to knock on the door here. He retired last november after working for than three decades as a firefighter. Two months later he joined this department as a volunteer. We want to give back to a community. We werent quite ready to hang it up yet. 21 years ago he was inspired after seeing other volunteers in action. You spent decades balancing this with his other career. Winemaker and Sonoma County. All of them have gone through hundreds of hours of training just. For the privilege of working for free. And they still train every month. And when the kincaid fire hit, they all enter the call. We 3000 miles a month. These are volunteers with no pay and away from their families. Some guys are without gas warm showers. In recent years theyve added some fulltime paid positions. But paid or not they all have a history of volunteering. Even the chief marshal kirbyville words through here with cal fire. I still think i get most of my time at a discounted rate or as a volunteer. Later because its passion. When he died he was still the fire chief. There are bound by a desire to serve. As they train for the next one, because there will be a next one, they do it together. The people that care about the community are willing to show up on holidays. Risk their own lives to save their community. That is the american spirit. That is the sense of spirit and what i want to foster. That is what i think is really great about america. Such a great group of people. The fire chief says theyre always looking for more volunteers. Not just firefighters with support services that wants to help for their assistance. Hats off to all the firefighters out there. Not just volunteers but anyone who saved their homes and structures. We have to talk wineries here as well. Coming up there are about 425 wineries and Sonoma County. 423 open for business. Will talk more about this in just a moment. Stay with us. Im leah. And thats me, long before i had moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. Ive always been the ringleader. Had a zest for life. Flash forward then ra kept me from the important things. And what my doctor said surprised me. She said my joint pain could mean permanent joint damage. And enbrel helps relieve joint pain and helps stop that joint damage. Ask about enbrel, so you can get back to being your true self. Enbrel may lower your ability to fight infections. Serious, sometimes fatal, events including infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma, other cancers, nervous and blhave occurred. And alls tell your doctor if youve been some place where fungal infections are common or if youre prone to infections, have cuts or sores, have had hepatitis b, have been treated for heart failure, or if you have persistent fever, dont start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu. Visit enbrel. Com to see how yor joint damage could progress. Enbrel. Fda approved for over 20 years. Welcome back. Is a special zip trip here to Sonoma County. There arplaces that are open. Restaurants cafes wineries and breweries. Is a Brewing Company and if you havent heard it the blind pig ipa. Great beers and Sonoma County. Checking back in with Frank Mallicoat and o wineries here and Sonoma County. Welcome back everyone. Joining us right now is steve palsy. Thank you very much. The first thing they said was a little different than in the summer. He was 38 here this morning. And it felt like it. This area usually gets a lot of free. By this time they should have five and up to six inches of rain. They have a court of an inch. La and sonego has more than we do. I think phoenix is more than we do. That is it mean if i can happen. Our turn is coming next week. As you know when it rains appear it can rain unbelievably hard. So there used to that. When it changes, changes fast. What is your favorite the need to appear . The list is a must. Lets visit my buddy kevin out here. He knows the town like the back of his hand. It is such a family town. They said it was like the relaxed hip sister here. Its a little bit of a hidden gem. Lots to do here. Because they get so much rain that plays a role in the kinds of wine here . Thats right. You go west you get the whites in the pinot grigios and the calves and the merlots. That the hotter son out there. Theyre looking at a unique gift shop suffering no damage the fire but youre saying they still suffered in some sense but theyre more than open for business this morning . They are definitely open for business here at mister moon. A menace to find the owner which is jessica timpson. Thank you for being here. This story is great. How long have you been in business . Almost 30 years. So long time. So people want to know that theyre coming back. The store is great. Can you tell us more about what you have to offer . A little bit of everything. We have something for everyone in the family. We like to curate and pick things that all kinds of people would enjoy. Gifts for children and gifts people can come here and get personal service in see high end items . Exactly. We really try to provide an experience. I want you to feel, touch and experience things. We really just try to provide a charming and unique experience. Every dollar spent goes back into the community. Its really just a great way to shop. So people come in and it may not even know you are here. What your customers who come back actually like about the store . They love the curated mix. They love the experience we try to stay joyful and upbeat. We want people to connect with each other and the community and really just have a great time. Okay so if you are bob ross fan they have all kinds of things but they have this. I could see this is your Christmas Card coming up for next year. Bob ross. Who joins us now. Little trees. Not necessarily talkabout wi thats right. We are in the heart of wine country here in windsor and hallsburg. As you mention hundreds of vineyards all affected by the kincaid fire. A lot of the delineation seems to be highway 101. On the west side they have the dry creek valley. And on the east side you have the Alexander Valley and that was a completely different story. Fred young will never forget that fateful night. There was a glow at the top of the hill. Then they were seeing the flames. A fifthgeneration owner of the winery. 448 acres strong and the vineyard was right in the crosshairs of the kincaid fire. The wind was 60 or 70 miles per hour. You can see them going through right to the bottom of the vineyard which is a good mile to mile and a half. And it was on top of us. They fought the flames for 24 straight hours. Miraculously save the vineyard. Their homes and the new multimillion dollar tasting room which is now surrounded by charred ground. They took a welldeserved nap on the family lawn. Photos that went viral on social media. It makes me feel very grateful. For the firefighters in the First Responders for helping out. If it wasnt for them it would look a lot different. 8 of the grapes are on the vine lost to smoke damage. Nearly the entire operation is still intact. And they are grateful for folks like sean and paige in recent fires. Weve been here before but theres no signs. I guess you finish this in 2019 . The fire never jumped highway 101. But that does not mean that the wineries here were affected. That includes over 70 wineries like lambert bridge. Wildfire was not the primary issue evacuations and Power Outages were. After the tubs fire they were on a generator writing out the nearly 2 week blackout. This community is so strong. The general managers quick to thank First Responders. But he also thinks not only the wineries but the counties were much better prepared this nd. Getting everyone out of the way nationally they did allowed firefighters to do the same. Thats what saved hallsburg and geyserville. While the wine is flowing so is the gratitude. Because this tightknit valley just got a bit tighter. It makes the emotional thinking about it. The sense of community and the way that people come together appear is unlike any other place that i could think of. People take care of each other. Apparently they do. Bill says he got phone calls and emails. Everyone was calling him and saying do you need a place to stay . How is the winery doing . And then back to robert young when he was fighting the fire alongside his son there were crews from as far as way as Amador County and ukiah. A lot of folks pitching in you foreign and 25 1 reese here to had damage. One had extensive damages. We are of course talking rock w theres a lot of goodwill and open hearts and people ready to pour for you in that bar. We are happy to welcome into the night can and dan from the rock rate winery. Youve open the business emporium. Before we talk about what is coming if i could take you back to that day . He described tremendous heartache when you realize what is happening. Absolutely. You just dont believe that it is happening to you. It is total shock and you go into a funk that you cant get out of. Its impossible to bring its reality and it took a good week for me to realize that i had to move on because that was my only choice. Was there debate on whether not the historic barn was saved on the property. Between the two of you did you have the bid on whether not youre going to continue . I dont think there was ever debate. I think it was always just move forward and instinctive. All the sudden the barn was there. And then we were moving on just like everyone else. So we had to do that. When people move structure as well as a home or in your case winery you could take away the building but the soul the property especially her property because it goes back 70 decades it still exists. When you walk around you still feel it there . Absolutely. We spent 10 years on that property. Putting our heart and soul into it with every instinctive thing. And it takes a lot out of you. But the soul is still there. The passionately put into it is still there. Unfortunately we can see the new focus here. For the people that your point for these days, what do they say . Everyone is obviously sad. But thrilled that we are moving on and their joining us. Joining in the resiliency of Sonoma County to just do us all the strength to endure with weve all gone through. It is a wonderful thing feeling when we are out there. As we look ahead to the coming months which can be quiet what is your message not just for the bay area but for everyone they can hear it. Really you can drive and talk to Sonoma County and you would see almost no evidence of fire. Things are open for business. But they keep reminding everyocrowded. Its a great time to come. Just like you said. Less time on reservations. So there open for business and caring on. We have diane marie and tim notaro. In an hour you see mike with his family. We also one of the car. Even better. I will still swing by. Thank you again. L to come h going to check back in with claudia wong as she is live in sonoma square. If youve never been its about a mile north of train town. Sunflower cafes a great spot in the square. Much more to come from downtown sonoma. We switched to tide purclean, because its made with plants. We switched to tide purclean, it gets stains out of his pants. Tide purclean, they dont put phosphates in. No dyes or chlorine its gentle on my skin. Tide purclean, it has nothing to hide. Its made with plants and has the cleaning strength of tide. The first plantbased detergent with the cleaning power of tide. Welcome back to the nine. Summary times my wife and i would say lets do some wine tasting in Sonoma County and until the children lets go to training grounds. So theres little bit of a trick if you never used it. Its been open for two years now. s what we see here . Its been two years you do a little bit of everything . Definitely. My vision was to not only showcase the wine but also to have the brand come to life to workshops and specifically merchandise. Three of the upstairs were looking at right now with workshops and altars and things out there as well . Yes. And we have workshop a wine tasting with commuter making and candlemaking. And hopefully a pasta making class coming up as well. Okay. I want to take is outside quickly before we go. People are just going to say wait theyre going to recognize the name that this is a new company. Your own wine but this is a company that is steeped in history. Definitely. My family has been in the valley 561 years. I wanted to find a location that mirrored that history. So the redwood barns a little off the plaza. It has history dating back to 1886 which is important to me to be able to find something that had a historical significance. It is beautiful and it feels like you have a hidden gem is your own secret place. So make sure you come to visit. You will be missing out if you dont. I know sonoma has a great Farmers Market. I have to say Farmers Market is just a couple blocks from here. A lot of good things to do. We are at Russian River brewing talking about resilient bury and again there more than open for business. A seasonal release to bring people and during the winter months. It was literally just a beer that we would brew every december and released in early february just for several years. In 2010 when they came through the beer just on they became the best beer in the world according to 10 people. And then suddenly we had these giant lines out the door and had to rethink how we do business. I think you are okay with that. I will try the elder. Would you like to grab one as well . The realities and the opportunities that we have for our visitors who love to olympia during this time of year. That challenge. Six months here in sonoma and three consecutive years of fires during these months. How does that impact someone like yourself that is in the restaurant and Entertainment Industry industry . We are one of the most resilient people in the world here. We bounce back quick. As claudia says all you to do is step up here and see how great and beautiful it is.
