A second. But check this out this. Is by daniel byer. Shows water in the pool there right the moment the quake hit. The quake was also caught on video in a newsroom in los angeles. You can see a clock swaying back and forth there. People who felt it says shaking lasted for about 10 seconds. It wasnt really strong. Because one of thing waitresses didnt even feel it. It was smooth. So you didnt panic. No. In fact, a lot of other customers there. Kind of a universal, ooh. It was like it was a ride, you know . And if youre from california, youre kind of used to these things. It was a little disconcerting. But you know, were not used to it. And its just under. Now that were doing fine. The usgs held a press conference just moments ago. Hear what they had to say. We should be expecting lots of aftershocks. And some of them will be bigger than the 3s that we have been having so far. I think the chance of having a magnitude 5, i dont this is an offthetopical cuted thing, probably greater than 50. Sometime this afternoon, well be having a larger aftershock within this sequence. As far as the early earthquake detection system goes, some people say it didnt work. But the usgs says the system did detect the earthquake and predicted that shaking would occur. However, it wasnt broadcast on shake alert. Now, Officials Say the system is still being tested. And officials are looking into what worked with the system this time around. And what still needs to be improved. And we have been monitoring social media, and San Bernardino countfire has tweeted that multiple buildings have cracks in them. Power lines are down. As water breaks. No injuries, though, were reported, frank. So at this point, thats a good sign. That is a very good sign. Okay, brooks jarosz, with the telephon geologist, david schwartz. David, thanks so much for checking in with us. Are you there. Im here. Tell us significance. Pretty sizable quake. And the first 6. 0 in Southern California, i believe, since 1999. Yeah. This is getting up there, a little larger. Its probably ruptured the surface. Im sure there are boots on the way there now to evaluate the surface and try to put together the entire story. This is sort of an active area. So its not a total surprise. And i do think that when we look at Southern California, also the bay area, we get these it really reenforces the idea that bigger ones are out there, and we need to be prepared. Were getting reports of minor damage in that area in the Mojave Desert. Had this been centered more, say, in the middle. San Bernardino County. Or heaven forbid in l. A. County. Could have been catastrophic, right . Certainly the amount of damage would have been high. And even though from the magnitude 6 napa earthquake in 2014. I mean, its an okaysized earthquake that did a significant amount of damage. You increase the magnitude. You move it into a populated area. And youre going to get a lot more damage occurring. And we are getting some reports of people as far away as l. A. A good 90 to 100 miles away. Felt the duration was between 20 and 30 seconds. What does that tell us about the quake, how long people are feeling it . You know, well. Sometimes sometimes you think it shakes for longer than it really does. But really its the seismometers around that have recorded the shaking that will really give us a real clue as to what went on and how long the shaking really lasted. Locally, you can have different lengths of shaking at different places, depending on the local geology. And if youre on rock, the shaking might be very short. If youre in an area that has a thick deposit people are going to feel the shaking lasting differently at different locations and you touched off the top mohafery des but so far, over 90 earthquakes in the last 24 hours, give or take, including a 2. 4 quake, that happened about a half hour prior to this quake. Can we expect that area to be pretty active . And is the worst already past . Or could there be another good sizable earthquake in that area . I think theres always the potential that when you have an earthquake of this size, it changes the stress in the earths crust. And it can actually load or increase the stress in adjacent areas. So you know, well be watching to see if there are signs that conceivably this could be followed by another earthquake of similar size or on one of the other local faults. It could be followed by something that is even larger. So one shouldnt say, okay. Weve had the worst. And its all over. Maybe this is just the start of somwill all find out. Former usgs geologist, david schwartz. Want to thank you for taking the time and shedding a little light on a 6. 4 quake, centered in the Mojave Desert. David, thank you. Sure. Sure. Back home now, right now, people across the bay area are actually celebrating the 4th of july holiday. And final preparations under way for some of tonights big fireworks displays. Of course, San Francisco, one of the bay areas most popular destinations for the fourth, traditional big Fireworks Show over the bay. That will begin tonight at 9 30. Hundreds of thousands of people usually line up to watch the 25minute show. The fireworks are fired from barges in the bay. And if theres not too much fog, you see them from several places around the city, of course. And across the bay. Two of the prime viewing locations are aquatic park in the city. Its really nice. I like it. Theres a lot of people here. A lot bigger than i thought. So glad i could make it this year. The parade has been drawing families to downtown danville since 1975. We have farmers that started this. We have the ranchers that participated in this. And now, its evolved. Qantas has done an amazing job putting this together each and every year. Our council is so proud of what we do here in the town of danville. And i couldnt be more proud of the town of danville. And the mayor says the parade next year shows no signs of slowing down. Cristina rendon, ktvu fox 2 news. Thank you for that. And there are plenty of events happening throughout the day around the bay on ktvu. Com. You can find a list of 4th fire and festivities. A town very close to that epicenter, where the earthquake began. Coming up. We continue to follow the breaking news out of Southern California this noon. A strong 6. 4 magnitude quake hit near San Bernardino county. It happened around 10 30 this morning, and joining us on the telephone now is macy ds. In ridgecrest. Close to the epicenter. Hello. Tell us what you felt. I mean, i was at my house at the time. And i live in, you know decentsized trailer. And my whole house was shaking. Im surprised everything is still intact. I mean, it really just i thought we were getting hit by another dust storm that we had just a couple of weeks ago. But it was definitely a lot worse than that. And i didnt realize it until about 20 seconds in, that it was an actual huge earthquake. And i guess you had felt several since. And maybe a few before, too. Is that right . I did feel the 4. 2, about 30 months before the 6. 4 happened. It actually woke me up out of a dead sleep. And then, i felt a couple of decentsized aftershocks. But that 6. 4 definitely still has me and my children completely shaken up. As long as as well as everyone at the bar. Well, tell us, was there any damage to your home, your trailer or downtown . We dont know much about ridgecrest. Maybe you can tell us about that, too. At my home, im surprised there wasnt any damage. But i have noticed yet. Downtown im not completely aware all of the damage. There was several broken glasses, broken bottles. And definitely a horrified bartender. I can imagine. I understand Ridgecrest Hospital there in town is being evacuated. Have you heard anything about that . I have not heard anything about that. We are trying to take care of all of my coworkers and get them all calmed down. Tell us about the town of ridgecrest itself. Youre about 100 miles out of the l. A. , to the northeast in the Mojave Desert . Right. I mean, its a very small town. I would say maybe couple thousand people. Its a very, very small town. Very community i cant even think of the word. Well, a Good Community town. Everyone knows one another, i would imagine. Has everyone kind of hunkered down at the bar, swapping stories and that kind of thing right now . Not everyone. I mean, we have maybe like 7 people in here. And its mostly just very close friends. A couple of other bartenders. And macy. Finally, tell us, are you guys used to earthquakes happening quite a bit in that area . Very small earthquakes happen. Very frequently. I mean, im 26. And this is by far the worst one that i have felt. And i have lived in ridgecrest my whole life. Okay. Well, were glad youre safe. Your kids are safe. And hopefully not a lot of damage in that area. That is macy deeds. She is a bartender at a pub in ridge crest. Not too far from the epicenter. Lets get to the web now. We have a holiday. And a lot of folks will be out and about today. Yes. Youre right. We have great weather coming our way. Before we get to our weather, actually want to show you the location of where that earthquake is. Because were talking about Mojave Desert. And sometimes its hard to picture exactly where it was. So that 6. 4 hit at 10 00 this morning. Thankfully in a remote area, just enough to not create a whole lot of damage. But we are hearing from people, like you said, as far away as las vegas. Perhaps los angeles. I even overheard something, im not positive. But as far as mexico, mexico border line. About 100 miles in each direction s. Pretty much felt, with aftershocks expected to come along with it. Lets take care of what we have going on here at home. They have since peeled back. But where we are them to leave is over areas of the coastline. Pacifica. Half moon bay. Likely to remain cloudy for the day. We are likely to get clearing in areas like santa cruz. And likely to get clearing for ourselves in stinson and bodega bay area. You can see it right there. West end of San Francisco still covered in gray. If we move south. We can see santa cruz, cap tolla. This just happened in the last half hour or so. Began to see clearing. Still very mild over the coastline for today. The ornshore flow onshore will continue. Its a light one. A little bit of a variable wind out there. But that sea breeze is not going to go away. And thal keep temperatures at the coast, along with the clouds cool. Well go mild around the bay. 56 at Half Moon Bay right now. We have 57 in downtown San Francisco. Low to mid70s in and around livermore. Concord, 80 degrees in brentwood. Going to be a warm one there this afternoon. Already warm at the gate, right about lunchtime. Heres a look at the forecast expected. Cool, mild to warm, depending where you are. So well remain in the mid60s to pacifica. Towards San Francisco. Around the bay. Beautiful weather in store. Low 70s oakland. Upper 70s, san rafael. And as you go inland, mid to upper 80s. Concord will go 86. 80 degrees for san jose. Temperatures will remain very similar, as we get closer to your weekend. Ill have a look at that. Plus, well take a look at the cloud cover, expected to return by tonight. And whether or not its going to impact those fireworks. More on that in just a bit. Frank . Thank you, rosemary. One of the biggest 4th of july celebrations will be tonight at the nations capital. There gbig change today. Doug luzader has more on what is creating some fireworks of its own. Theres never any shortage of fire power on the National Mall on this day. But this year, it will include some big hardware, too. A display of u. S. Military might that has been rolling into washington. Were going to have a great 4th of july in washington, d. C. It will be like no other. President trump, threw july 4th organizers a call. Now we know plans will include flyovers. To air force one aircraft to the navys blue angels. Were going to have hundreds of thousands of people. Were going to celebrate america. The big concert on the National Mall will still take place as scheduled. But the president will not confine himself to the white house balcony as he did last year. Instead, be leading a celebration from the lincoln memorial. Now, as you can imagine, this is not without controversy. For one thing, the fireworks themselves will have to be moved farther away from the u. S. Capitol. And thats just to start. He politicized the 4th of july before he opens his mouth. Some democratic members of congress are none too pleased about the president s planned speech. But like other things, the public reaction may reveal deep political divides. Hearing him speak ruins the day. Hes the president of the united states. And i believe he deserves to be there and has something to say. Either way, the day will end with fireworks. Something with bipartisan appeal. In washington, doug luzader. San joey chestnut. Champion of the world. Joey chestnut. Chestnut won the nations hot dog eating contest by eating 71 hot dogs and buns. Contest, of course, a 4th of july tradition. And this is chestnuts 12th time winning the title. Last year, he ate a record 74 hot dogs and buns. He said hes still disappointed that he came shy of beating that old record. I love to get a new record. Get everybody out here. They love a record. And theyre out here standing in the heat. But well see. Hopefully next year, ill come back and strategize and figure out a way to do it. Miko suno won the womens contest for the sixth year in a row, after eating 31 dogs and buns. Still to come. San bruno Police Continue to search for the suspects in a terrifying gun battle inside the tanforan mall. The new see got yesterday. And we continue to follow breaking news out of Southern California. Evacuations under way, after a 6. 4 magnitude earthquake in Southern California. Well have the latest coming up. Oming up. We are still following breaking news out of Southern California. A strong 6. 4 magnitude quake, hit near San Bernardino county. About 10 30 this morning. This is one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Southern California in 20 years. Were getting some reports of just minor damage thus far. San Bernardino County Fire Department says there are some buildings with minor cracks. Some broken water mains. And rock slides on some of the roads there. The kern county Fire Department says some evacuations are under way at the ridgecrest regional hospital. But so far, there are no reports of any major injuries. Video posted on social in north county, shows water in a pool. You can see, swaying away. The moment that quake hit. Usgs held a press conference just a short time ago, where they talked about the earthquake Early Detection system. Dect the earthquake. It did work in terms of estimating that there was shaking that was going to occur. The signal apparently did not get out. So you know, the system is still being tested. The last time we had an earthquake in Southern California, above magnitude 6 was 99. People from as far away as las vegas to the pacific coast, reported feeling the quake. Reporter gina silva talked to people in huntington beach, who felt the earthquake. We felt it. But we didnt know it was an earthquake. We were inside the news van. And it started moving back and forth. And we just thought someone was messing with us, pushing the van. Armando got out. And he was like, someone is there. We went back to editing. As if nothing happened. Then we realized, it was an earthquake. You fellas here. You felt the quake. Describe what it was like. More of a rolling kind of quake. We felt it shift back and forth. But wasnt really strong. It was smooth. So you didnt panic. No. In fact, a lot of other customers there. Kind of a universal ooh. It was like a ride. If youre in california, youre used to these kind of things. Everybody trying to figure out where it was. I guess its like 170 miles up in ridgecrest. So it might be a little brutal up there. Absolutely. 6. 4 is what were hearing right now. That could change. That is a strong one. Northridge was, i believe, 6. 4 as well. That was devastating. Oh, yeah. That must have been a hard one. This was rather smooth. Thats why we really didnt feel it that much. We didnt panic. Thank you so much. Lets go inside. This is woodys cafe in huntington beach. Its a very popular spot. And everyone here, they felt it as well. This couple, where are you from . North dakota. This is erience for you. We didnt know. What did you think, sir . Felt like really gusty winds. We were in the car. Shaking. So have you ever felt an earthquake before . No. This is definitely first time. So now you know. Now i know. You know what it feels like. Now i know. Does it scare you . Would you live in california, knowing this is earthquake country . Yes. [ inaudible ] and thank you both for sticking with us. Everyone here, they felt it. In fact, the gentleman earlier said it i havent good morning. Did you all feel the earthquake . Yes. Yes . Let me move over here. Describe what it was like. I didnt feel a thing. You didnt. But you did, sir. Yeah. See youre from arizona. So you dont deal with earthquakes in arizona. N we dont. And it was a little disconcerting. But you know, were not used to it. And just under a little bit. But now that were atwoodys, were doing fine. Im glad youre doing fine enjoy your vacation. Yeverybody here felt it. But luckily, it was a smooth earthquake and not one of those really scary ones. Ill send it back. All right. Thank you very much. President trump tweeted out just a couple of minutes ago, quote, been fully briefed on the earthquake in Southern California. All seems to be very much under control. And by the way, a 4. 5 aftershock hit about 10 minutes ago. More to follow for sure. But right now, no reportless of major damage or serious injuries, following that big quake in the Mojave Desert. We will continue to follow that. Meanwhile, San Bruno Police are still searching for the shooters in the terrifying gun battle inside the tanforan mall tuesday. Now we are starting to see mall Surveillance Video. A Security Camera at the happy lemon drink stand recorded these images of a group of people running on the second floor. Then one of them pulls out a gun and fires at one of the shooting victims goes down. Also, this video shows a second shooter across the way. And people running for cover. Two boys were wounded in the shooting are now in serious condition. A 16yearold was shot in the stomach. A 12yearold hit in the leg. Investigators say the boys were part of two groups that have been arguing over each other. Police say the shooting was not a random act of violence. Authorities are still sorting through, quote, large amounts of evidence from that shooting. All right. Were going to take you to a usgs presser. Just getting under way. Once again, the earthquake 6. 4 quake hit about 10 30 in the Mojave Desert. Lets listen in. On the aftershocks we have been reporting. So far, we have about 3 under magnitude 3. And 6 above magnitude 4. Overall, this is a very robust sequence. And on the theory that when you have a lot of earthquakes, you tend to have a lot of earthquakes, we try to estimate the rate of aftershocks from what were recording. And from that, we have about an 80 chance of at least one magnitude 5. And about a 9 chance that something larger than 6. 4 could occur over the next week. Thats just saying this is a big sequence, which shouldnt be surprising anybody who has been watching what has been going on for the last two hours. We also have locations on some of them. And thats where we were trying to get up this map here. Its interesting. It does look like we might be seeing two different faults. Yeah. If you would do that. So the main shock was actually located in the middle. At that intersection between those two strands. And so we think the main fault was rupturing down towards the southwest, which would have focused the energy towards ridgecrest. But then theres also a second fault that seems to have been activated going up to the northwest. Again this area that is not completely surprising. Look at those little black lines in there. Theres a burch of them. This bunch of them. This is an area with a lot of little faults in a complex area, moving apart. It does suggest that ridgecrest was particularly hard hit. We have reports from california, office of Emergency Services that there seem to be a couple of structure fires going on in ridgecrest. And theyre responding to them. There is also a Small Community called throwna trona, which is even closer to the ruptures. And its on a dried lake bed. We do not have any communication with them yet that would be a place that there is potentially significant damage. As i said, were seeing at least two faults involved. This area is characterized by robust sequences. So we expect to be seeing a lot of earthquakes today. And some of them could be damaging. Probably at least one more will be damaging. Kern county just tweeted something that suggested that they were anticipating a quake in 15 minutes. This tweet came out of a little while ago. There is nothing that gives us the time of a particular event. Now, im going to tell you, i think there will be a magnitude 5 today. I did that on the day of north ridge. And when it happened, people said, you predicted the earthquake. And i said, i predict rain in kauai, too. This is the same situation. When the probabilities are this high, then you can say yes, there will probably be a ing. If somebody is giving out a time of a particular event, theyre not the aftershocks. We dont yet the geologists havent yet got out. We dont have a report yet on that. Actually, you did mention. Did you notice, two aftershocks showed up. I just saw the two extra red dots that showed up here. This type of yes, conjugate behavior is relatively common. Back in 1987, we had two magnitude 6s. On conjugate faults. Big bear was a little more separated from it. But was the same type of conjugate feature. The way the stress works. If im pushing in this way, i can move out here. Or i can move out here. So those are essentially perpendicular. We call it conjugate faulting, is a common feature. Well just have to see. Were only two hours into this sequence. Well have to see how it develops. What about the shake alert app . Have you gotten any closer to understanding . Yes. I can give an update about that. And there is maybe a little miss understanding or miscommunication. The system actually worked as designed. So an alert was sent out by the u. S. Geological survey. The app for the city of l. A. Is set up with various thresholds. The first threshold is a magnitude 5 earthquake or greater in l. A. County. It will send out an alert. This earthquake was outside of l. A. County. So it didnt satisfy that condition. The other condition is intensity greater than 4. The intensities in l. A. Were 3 and lower. So the app performed as designed. Its just that the intensity levels were below that threshold that had set by the app. So the system actually worked as designed. It is something that we need to look into, though, as to whether maybe that threshold should be lowered or adjusted for future. Just to reiterate, though. The level of shaking, within the city of l. A. , was not damaging. So in that sense, the app was worked as designed. If it had worked with the levels set correctly. They were set correctly lower, yes. What would we have seen on the app . For example. If it had been three intensity 3. Then people would have got notification to expect shaking. The i dont know the exact wording on the app. But there would have been a significant about 45 seconds. Yeah. 45 seconds before the shaking actually arrived. So the alert would have worked beautifully in that sense. But again, the shaking levels would not have been damaging. Certainly would have been great, you know, to kind of know ahead of time. Did it have sound or just like a tax . What is it . Im not sure. Its never gone off on my phone. So im not completely sure. I think they may be using something well, they were going to be using a chiming alert that is used in japan. But there were some im not sure which one they ended up use. Yeah. And im guessing the issue to not lower the levels is simply because you dont want to start getting so many alert that people dont Pay Attention when they get them. And this is something. People didnt hear that esti just to repeat. The question was or the reason why potentially that the alert level isnt set lower is so that you dont have a large alerts with minimal shaking. And that is correct. And this is a subjective judgment. So in designing the app, you have to make a decision on that. Theres actually been a fair amount of research looking into this in other places like japan and mexico. And theres some sense that people dont mind getting an alert, even if the shaking is not that severe. And which would have been the case here, if it had been set to intensity 3. So this is something that maybe we need to, you know, again maybe needs to be looked at, tweaked on the system. Yes. No, sorry. Just so to clarify because there has been some talk about two earthquakes today. So if you could just run by that. There have been hundreds of earthquakes today. For a while, the website so the way the system works, theres a lot of us recording earthquakes around the world. Especially we have a system that if somebody else puts up an alert, and you know, theres always the chance that the great pasadena earthquake means we arent giving out anything. So you want to have someone else say it if were not here. So theres a system to try to negotiate that. There was a warning. We think it was from the Tsunami Warning Center actually. And the timing usually, the system can recognize theyre the same earthquake. If one of the systems gets the time a little off, then they look like different earthquakes. And the system the automatic system allows it to go in. So for a short time, there were two alerts. One from us. One from the Tsunami Warning Center. And when we recognized that it was there, we went in and cleaned it up. That was not getting rid of an earthquake. By the way, ive heard the conspiracy theorists about that. Its just that we cleaned it up. Right. And just to clarify, additionally, we had been just talking about two faults and so forth. Thats still the case. Thats not does the second have a name . Were not not until we get a geologist on the ground. Yeah. Occasionally, there are reports about faults that we do not know about. We know a lot of faults in this area. I mean, if you look again at the picture. Which disappeared. Which just disappeared on us. All right, you have been listening to the usgs press conference. 6. 4 earthquake. About 100 miles to the northeast of los angeles. Right in the Mojave Desert, hit about 10 30. Theres been a number of aftershocks. A good 30plus since that earthquake hit. All 4. 0 or less. 20 chance that one might be over 5 in the hours to come. The earthquakes hitting on a couple of faults centered near the town. Ridgecrest, which is a small town of about 2,000 people. Theyve got structure fires there. But no major injuries. And we will continue to keep an eye on that. As we get more information. In the meantime, well take a short break. And more news when we come back. Welcome back. It may be the most important forecast of the year. We need some clear skies for all the fireworks around the behave area tonight. Lets check in with rosemary and find out if were going to make it or not. Ha ha. The pressure.
