We are learning more about what water officials in santa rosa are doing to find the source of a chemical in the water system of neighborhood already hit hard by the wildfires. Only 13 houses survived the fire storm in fountain grove. Since november, Water Quality officials have been providing bottled water to the homes because unsafe levels of benzene have been found in the water system. Benzene is a component of gasoline often found in plastics. We got these notices from city water that we could no longer use the water for drinking and cooking. This is persisted and the numbers continue to periodically elevate and go down. There are several theories about what is causing the contamination. It could be that benzene is leeching from superheated plastic water pipes, gasoline may have spin spilled into the broken water pipes or it could be underground motor oil or gasoline that spilled there before the was a neighborhood. If they cant find and fix the problem, santa rosa may be facing a 20 million bill to completely replace the neighborhoods entire delivery system. In santa rosas coffey park, they are celebrating the end of the cleanup of fire debris. A group of more than 100 Child Development experts are trying to get facebook to get rid of its new kid app. Rob malcolm is live at facebook headquarters this morning and menlo park to talk about this. Reporter good morning. Kids want to always be connected to their parents and parents want to be connected to their kids whether it be with a cell phone or using a computer. These child advocates have sent a letter to the facebook ceo, mark zuckerberg, asking facebook to end its messenger app for kids saying it poses Serious Health risks. This is what its all about. More than 100 child advocates were joined by medical experts and other individuals and are urging facebook to pull the app saying kids are too young to handle online relationships and also lack a Firm Understanding of privacy when it comes to sharing text, pictures and video. Facebook launched messenger kids last year. It allows kids under the age of 13 to connect through text and video chats either oneonone or with groups. It also has kid friendly stickers and drawing tools. Those against the app argue use of social media can be linked to higher rates of depression in teenagers and also hinders their ability to read Human Emotion and engage in the physical world. The facebook head of Global Safety responded with that statement saying we worked to create messenger kids with an Advisory Committee of parenting and developmental experts, as well as with families themselves and in partnership with the national pta. We continue to be focused on making messenger kids the best experience it can be for families. They go on to say that messenger kids has no advertising and also that kids need their parents permission to sign up. All contacts need to be approved by parents and if kids want to connect with each other, both parents have to get together and approve that as well. Facebook is saying that the app allows parents a lot of control over how kids use it and parents say it allows them to be connected with their kids throughout the work day. There is some pushback towards this. We will try to hear some choices and hear what some parents and other individuals have to say about this. I bet you will get a tearful on that. Very interesting. Researchers say the nicotine in ecigarettes seemed to damage the dna in mice. Those dna breakdowns could lead to a higher risk of deadly diseases. Now the experts will see if longterm exposure to nicotine vaping actually causes mice to develop cancer or heart disease. There is another study suggesting alcoholics who smoke marijuana every day are healthier. Thats because researchers say the drug appears to prevent liver damage in alcoholics. They looked at 320,000 adults with a history of abusing alcohol. They found that 10 who also used cannabis showed a lower rate of liver disease. They cannot explain how or why just yet but say its possible marijuana has antiinflammatory properties that reduce long term liver damage. Now that the Recreational Use of marijuana is legal in california, more people are trying edible products. But doctors with the poison control department are warning new customers to closely examine the dosage and serving size on the label. As alex savidge shows us now, edibles are not created equal. State of emergency . Please send rescue. I think im having an overdose. And so is my wife. Overdose of what . Speer marijuana. I dont know if it had something in a. Okay. Please come. I think we are dying. Reporter a desper, panic 911 call from a michigan man who ate too many marijuana brownies. Now that california is ground zero for recreational cannabis, some people will likely be trying edibles for the first time. But these products are not for everyone. And taking the right amount is key. Amayah moore worried . I think that, from a Public Health perspective there is concern that we will see an uptick in the number of patients who are presenting to Health Care Facilities and calling the Poison Center regarding marijuana. Reporter in california the legal limit for edibles is 10 milligrams of thc per serving. And each one of these products can have no more than 100 milligrams in the entire package. But ktvu found not every dispensary is keeping up with the proper labeling laws. Our team fanned out across the bay area and visited nine different dispensaries in oakland, berkeley, San Francisco and san jose. We found one third of them were not following state law, selling edibles with too much thc. This says 25 milligrams. You can cut these into four squares. Reporter sometimes the edibles were being sold at three times or even 10 times the dosage allowed by state law. Dispensaries do have six months to get their inventory up to date but in the meantime products with too much thc must have these warning labels. And dosing is not just a concern for adults that are now legally able to consume. For me, this picture is emblematic of the problem or the concerns i have about edibles or you have a piece of candy and this little tiny bites, a little kids bite. Reporter doctor Craig Smollin of the california poison control system is concerned with the new legality of marijuana edibles. Two years ago, he was one of the doctors who treated 19 patients, all rushed to the hospital after eating marijuana gummy rings at a quinceanera celebration in San Francisco. Many of those who got sick were teenagers and children. One patient just six years old. A consumer that eats 50 milligrams for the first time is going to probably have a similar experience to drinking two bottles of wine. Reporter and dosage is not the only concern. With the new law, edibles also must now come in childproof packaging. The intention is that a five yearold cannot get into this. Its a little tricky to open.
