Ktvus Robert Malcolm has been at the scene all evening and joins us live with the very latest. Reporter good evening , right now this investigation has been going on for almost 8 hours. Starting at about 230 this afternoon, Redwood City Police tell us they are very familiar with this individual and they gave him several opportunities to surrender. Both using english and spanish but he did the unthinkable, raising his weapon, pointing and firing at police. 230 saturday afternoon multiple gunshots could be heard in front of the Wells Fargo Branch at broadway and main in redwood city. Multiple officers took down a man with a gun. To make that shot the dude. Reporter this man got the video from across the street from the marston appointments. Apartments. He was not complying with their orders, not doing what they were telling him to do. Reporter a bank number customer driving up to use the atm called police saying she saw a man in front of the atms with a handgun. Police responded and set up a perimeter not allowing people in or out while Redwood City Police joined with the specialized street crime unit negotiated. That team is trained in Mental Health negotiations, they started a dialogue with the individual who remained armed. Reporter police say the man was well known and they have been dealing with him since he was eight years old. He had been incarcerated several times. He had the opportunity, of familiarity with him, to dialogue his surrender. It didnt work out in the individual raised his weapon and fired in the direction of the officers and the officers returned fire. First i wasnt sure who went first but then officers immediately responded, reporter the san mateo da countys office is now conducting the investigation while both the redwood city Patrol Officer and the sheriffs deputy involved in the shooting remain sequestered. The suspect motives are still unclear. He never made it inside the bank. We dont know if he was standing there to engage anybody coming to the atms to use them. Reporter the victim has not been identified, while disappointed with the loss of life the police chief said highly trained officers did their best to deescalate the situation. Unfortunately the individual we were talking to set the tone for the results. Reporter those officers that were involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave. If you look behind me police right now are just wrapping up their investigation and during this entire ordeal customers inside the bank were never in danger. A pedestrian was seriously hurt today when he was hit by a car. It happened just before 230 this afternoon at tennessee and telemann street. Fire crews responded to the street and found the 56year old man lying on the ground. The police say the driver of the car hit several vehicles and the victim during a chase with Solano County sheriffs. Police were able to arrest the 34 ounces 31yearold suspect after he fled from the scene. We do not know the extent of the mans injuries yet. Andrew i know you can hear me. I love you buddy. He was hit and killed Christmas Eve by a suspected impaired driver. The car fire happened around 930 this morning near the Lehigh Hansen cement facility on statements creek boulevard in cupertino. They quickly got the fire out but were not able to save the person inside. It is still not clear what started the fire. Six people were sent to the hospital today after two people trying to get away from police pressed into a family of four. Police say the suspect spotted a police car and made a uturn. The scar the cart sped away and 100 miles per hour, running a red light nt boning up family of four. Both the victims and suspects were taken to the hospital with just one person having serious injuries. Tonight Gilroy Police arrested a man after he robbed a pizza hut at gunpoint yesterday afternoon. 24yearold isaac diaz demanded money from an employee as he was putting it into a safe. He then fled and was pulled over later that evening leading police on the chiefs chase through the city of hollister. He was arrested and police used spike strips to deflate his tires. This was one of several armed robberies that is happened in the last week. We are learning more about a surfer in marin county bitten by short today. It happened at the estuary off the coast of marin county where a shark bit the female surfers foot. The National Park service said the female victim walked herself to the Visitor Center and then took herself to the hospital. Authorities identified the victim and killer in the shooting at a Southern California law firm as the founder and one of the partners. The la county Coroners Office said 75yearold major erlanger was shot and killed yesterday at the long beach firm. The suspected shooter, 58 yearold john mendoza, a partner at the firm, also died. Mendoza walked into the office and shot two colleagues before turning the gun on himself. Police have no motive yet for the shooting. Tonight we are learning more about the heroic efforts of a u. S. Army soldier who died in thursdays deadly apartment fire. 28yearold emmanuel mens aunt who was home in the bronx for the holidays when the fire broke out, he is one of 12 people who died in that fire. Four of the victims are children, and their father says his son died trying to save others from the fire. He tried to do his best. Well, it is hard to lose him like this. The new York City Fire department has a toddler playing with a stove started the fire. His mother went out with him and another child leaving the apartment door open, allowing the fire to rush up to other floors. Four people remain in the hospital with serious injuries. President trump is speaking out on robert mueller, telling the New York Times he believes special counsel is quote going to be fair in his investigation into russia and the trump campaign. According to the report George Papadopoulos had drinks with an australian diplomat at a bar in london and mentioned that russian had dirt on Hillary Clinton. The report says australian officials reached out to their us counterparts, and the anti trump dossier is what many republicans have focused on in recent days. The American People deserve to know whether their own money was used to pay russians to discredit the duly elected president of the united states. We have asked those questions and have not gotten answers. There is a letter addressed to Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein requesting more documents from the dossier, the department of justice and the fbi have failed to turn over documents and witnesses despite a subpoena. For weeks now republicans have criticized top officials at the fbi and doj, at least three House Republicans want to see special Counsel Robert Mueller fired. So far for former trump advisors have been charged in the special counsel investigation. A delta flight from detroit headed to atlanta was delayed when the pilot spotted a sparrow fly into the cockpit. Maintenance crews were called in to try and find the bird. But with no luck. Other new laws taking effect on monday, even though Recreational Marijuana is legal it will be illegal to take and drive or carry open containers of cannabis while behind the wheel. Law enforcement say they will be out in force over new years eve, the Highway Patrol says it is all hands on deck during the maximum enforcement. Which started last night and last through midnight on monday. Officers are looking for not only intoxicated drivers but anyone impaired by drugs, illegal or legal. They are also keeping an eye out for cell phone use, seatbelt violations and speeding. There are a number of Public Transit options available on new years eve to keep people off the roads who have been drinking. Bart is adding trains and extra patrols. Peak times for bart ridership are projected to fall between 10 30 pm and 1 30 am. Trains will run every 20 minutes after midnight with extra trains standing by in downtown San Francisco after the big Fireworks Show at the embarcadero. Bart service will run until 3 am new years day. Spokespersons say bart police will provide extra support and San Franciscos sheriffs deputies as well. And the transit is doing its part to make sure people get home safe. For the third year in a row they are offering free fares through 5 am new years day, the fair boxes and clipper card readers will be covered and will not accept payment during those hours. One thing to keep in mind, bus service will operate on a sunday schedule. We cant forget about aaas tipsy toe, it is offering that service to anyone who needs a ride home tomorrow night. Drivers will provide free 10 mile toe and ride home available from 6 pm to 6 am monday morning. A Donation Campaign is underway this weekend at Goodwill Stores, the 30 locations throughout the bay area receive thousands of donations this time of year as people are still in the spirit of giving and also have only a few more days to get that tax exempt donation in. On a typical day most donations go directly into the store but at busy times of the year like the month of december all the overflow gets loaded onto a truck and sent to a plant to be sorted out.
