Reporter this is a very sad Christmas Morning for at least several families here in the bay area. We are in front of what has been the scene for hours here on 880 south near southland mall. That is the chp car that was hit from behind. There is debris everywhere on the freeway, on this offramp, across all lanes. Now, i want to just show you right across from this offramp here, thats the other car that was involved, this red car where you see the front left side smashed in, ending up across the freeway. The chp is being very tight lipped about this accident. They confirmed at least two chp officers were seriously injured as well as the driver of that red car. The accident happened around 11 45 p. M. , Christmas Eve, again, near 880 south near winton by the mall. Investigators arent giving specifics about the injuries or confirming if anyone has passed. I want to mention, however, right before our report we saw a coroners van transporting someone on 880 north passing the scene. It was followed by at least a dozen chp vehicles, lights on, but no sirens. Now, again, the chp is not confirming any deaths but it is clear this is a very solomon morning. Solemn morning. The circumstances around this accident very much a mystery. Investigators are not releasing any information about what may have led to this crash. We hope to get the questions answered at 9 00 at the press conference. All the lanes here on 880 southland are closed as well as the offramp. Four people are homeless on this Christmas Morning following an Early Morning house fire. It happened in San Francisco. First reported shortly before 1 00 in the morning on prospect avenue in the citys vernal heights neighborhood. Firefighters on the scene within minutes, managed to get everyone out of the burning home safely. But the twoalarm fire caused major damage to the home. The red cross now helping the four residents. Happening now while most businesses and government offices are closed today it is actually one of the busiest times of year for bay area charities. A group of volunteers is bringing Christmas Joy to thousands of people in need in San Francisco. More than 400 volunteers are at the salvation armys south of Market Community center this morning. They are packaging some 4000 holiday meals and will then deliver the food to folks unable to leave their homes today. Many of those people are very sick or elderly. Two other bay area charities, glad Memorial Church and st. Anthonys dining room are hosting app are holding big feasts this morning. Christmas celebration goes from 10 00 this morning until 1 00 in the afternoon. Organizers say it is a festive atmosphere where folks see Friendly Faces and feel welcome. As usual players from the teams competing in wednesdays foster bowl at foster farms bowl at levis stadium will lend a helping hand. University of arizona at glide and perdue at st. Anthonys. This is some of the video last christmas. Every year the players say the experience opens their eyes and one of the lasting memories of that bowl game. Over at st. Anthonys charity normally serves 2400 meals a day. Administrators expect to feed more than 3000 people on this Christmas Morning. St. Anthonys opened in 1950 and has been care of the poor and homeless in the citys tenderloin neighborhood ever since. Organization also offers a medical clinic, job training and distributes Free Clothing every day. Freezing cold temperatures overnight are making life on the streets even more difficult than normal but volunteers at the large homeless camp in san jose sunday and passed out necessities including heavy blankets. Leigh martinez reports, these volunteers are trying to stem the rise of homeless deaths in santa clara county. This is home for the holidays for the 80 people who live every day and night in this camp under the freeway. Going to take him in. We are going to walk. Reporter Christmas Eve the pastor and volunteers delivered blankets donated from the United States government, disaster blankets to combat the cold temperatures. They were introduced during katrina and these have been known to save many lives when people are in a difficult situation, so this is i think it is tantamount to a natural disaster. Reporter volunteers stand out fanned out onto the homeless camp under highway 101. They delivered blankets, donated socks, they got thank yous in return. The volunteers are not just out here because its the holiday. They come here five days a week to deliver supplies but despite all of their efforts, pastor scott says that homeless deaths have increased this year. The truth is, i think what we are doing is not working because the awareness is up but the actual numbers are also up and the numbers of people dying is way up. Reporter santa clara countys Coroners Office says the number of homeless deaths in the county tripled in the last few years. 132 people died last year. The initial investigation shows drug and alcohol abuse were the two biggest factors in the increase of deaths but many in camp fear the cold exposure increases their risk. It gets real cold, cold, cold where your hands hurt and your face is all red. Reporter she has heard stories of other people who have died sleeping out in the cold and she worries about her own health. Im cold. Reporter how long did that last . I got it about a week ago, i still have it right now. I saw it during the heat and during the cold over the years. People are caught unaware and they dont know how cold its going to get at night and the county set up Alert Systems but it doesnt reach people. Part of a major freeway remains shut down at this hour after an overnight crash that did involve a chp car. Reporter this has been its been more than six hours since the accident and the chp still being very tight lipped about the status of the officers injured but behind me you can see how serious the crash was. Thats the officers vehicles with the back end smashed in, debris everywhere here on the freeway and the other car involved is right over here. It ended up across the freeway, across lanes and even across the offramp. Now, the chp says the accident happened around 11 45 last night, Christmas Eve. They have not yet released information on what led to the accident. All we know is the chp vehicle was on 880 south here near winton when it appears the car hit it from behind at a very fast speed. Debris continues to be scattered here this morning, not much of the scene has really changed. There are still evidence markers here, both cars involved are here. Police in livermore say a dog may be to blame for a driver crashing into somebodys home. Investigators say a dog was riding inside this honda crv when it apparently jumped down hit the gas pedal causing the vehicle to speed forward, hit the home on el vie el viera street. The governor has granted holiday pardons to two men who are on the verge of being deported for committing crimes while in the u. S. , one of those men is from mowdette modesto. He served two years in prison in 1995. He was then picked up in an immigration sweep two months ago. He is very grateful for the pardon and says hes changed since his arrestmore than two decades ago. People that still label me as a thug but i just want to tell them that, you know, today im not the same person as i was before. Yeah, hes showing effort that hes trying to change for the better, so i feel like everyone deserves a second chance. Governor brown also pardoned another cambodian man who was picked up in an immigration sweep in october. The pardons come weeks after brown signed californias sanctuary bill into law. It greatly restricts local Law Enforcement agencies from cooperating with federal agencies. Progressive groups vowing to hold mass demonstrations against President Trump if he fires special prosecutor robert mueller. The Administration Says mueller will not lose his jobs but speculation that the president may fire him persists through washington anyway. Progressive groups fear the president may remove mueller during the holidays when congress and the public are distracted. 150,000 people have registered online saying they will begin protesting at more than 600 cities if mueller is dismissed. Congress is home for the holidays and wont be back until january 3rd. Thats when many members want to turn their attention to fixing up National Infrastructure which the president has already said could be a top priority. I think you will see the president roll out infrastructure plan in january, both democrats and republicans say their infrastructure is crumbling and we need to fix it. It helped basically large corporations and high income people. If we could have focused on middle income we could have helped grow the middle class which would have been good for our future. The democrats are also hoping that voters unhappy with the g. O. P. Tax changes will help them gain some seats in congress during the november midterm elections. They say way to do that is to strengthen their image as the party for the middle class. Overseas isis is claiming responsibility for a Christmas Day attack in afghanistan. A suicide bomber detonated an explosive near the office of the Afghan Intelligence service. At least 10 people were killed in the blast including a woman who just happened to be driving by. The Afghan Office is near the Embassy American embassy. Both isis and taliban have carried out several past attacks, mainly targeting security forces. That ticket can be waived if they do an online smoke school. If they are caught burk a second or third burning a second or third time, the tickets get much higher than from there. Allowances being made without installed heating where wood stoves and fireplaces are the only source of heat. But if you do decide to burn, happy holidays, you could be burning up money in fines. Services include music, singing, sermons and holy communion. And right now glide Memorial Church in San Francisco is preparing its christmas feast. Joe betz, the owner of the famous San Francisco restaurant house of prime rib donated thousands of pounds to glide. Betz has donated food for 25 years and as you can imagine, people look forward to this special luncheon every year. Prime rib is a specialty, its a gift, though its about standing with especially the most vulnerable in our community, letting them know that they are special too and we come together as a community to do that. Glide says it relies on the donations and volunteers to help the disadvantaged. And in the south bay the vta offices are shut down and the transit on a sunday holiday schedule. There is no express Light Rail Service all week long, ace train and shuttles will not run today. Snow coverage in parts of the sierra look dramatically different than this time last year. Last year you might remember many resorts saw their biggest snowpack in years. At some resorts there was so much snow it was as high as buildings and covered chair lifts but this year the average elevation where snow turns to rain is getting higher. Researchers studying snow levels looked at radar and weather station sites in the northern sierra for a 10year period and while there are shortterm fluctuations in snow levels, the longterm trend may be pointing to higher elevations. This is totally consistent with the concerns that we have with ongoing Climate Change in the region. Researchers admit the 10 year sample size is small and more Research Still needs to be done. The Study Suggests a stronger Monitoring System to track future changes. For now the current snapshot at the lower elevations may be a preview of what winters could look like down the road. And if youre in need of a last minute Holiday Light show, the willow glen neighborhood in san jose is apparently the place to go for the past 12 years neighbors have gotten together to make the neighborhood one of the best places in the bay area to see Holiday Lights. Theres a snowflake and candy cane house and you can also see santas lighted reindeer scattered throughout the neighborhood. Its really amazing experience to see all the houses that are decorated and how people made this effort to make everything look so beautiful. Oh, my. Looks fabulous. Amazing. Yes.
