Volunteers fanned out today to deliver heavy blankets to People Living in a large san jose homeless camp. Homeless deaths in Santa Clara County are on the rise and volunteers are looking to prevent illnesses or debts related to this coldweather. Reporter this is home for the holidays for the 80 people who live every day and night in this camp under the freeway. Christmas eve, pastor scott and volunteers deliver blankets donated from the United States government. They are disaster blankets to combat the cold temperatures. I think they were introduced during katrina. These have been known to save many lives. I think this is nice. Reporter volunteers fanned out to the homeless camp under highway 101. They delivered blankets. They donated socks. They got think use and return. Volunteers are not just out here because it is a holidays. They come here five days a week to deliver supplies. Despite all of the efforts, pastor scott says homeless deaths have increased this year. I think what we are doing is not working. The awareness is up but the numbers are also up and the number of people dying is way up. Reporter Santa Clara County Coroners Office says the number of homeless deaths in the county has tripled over the last few years. 132 people died last year. Drug and alcohol abuse were the two biggest factors in the increase of deaths. Many in camps fear the cold exposure increases their risk. It gets real cold. Your hands hurt. Your face is all red. Reporter she has heard stories of other people who have died sleeping out in the cold and she worries about her own health. During the heat and the cold over the years, people are caught unaware. They dont know how cold it will be overnight. The county set up Alert Systems but it does not reach people. At alameda landing shopping center, the parking lot was packed with folks trying to pick up their last few items. Most people we saw were scrambling to get things done before time runs out. We came here to do both. We got Grocery Shopping and Christmas Shopping done. We are going home now. We were out real early this morning. Now everyone is starting to come out so it is time for us to go home. There are a few hours left before most stores close for the night. Christmas services are taking place at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco this holiday weekend. The Holiday Service started friday and will continue through tomorrow. Services include music, singing, sermons and holy communion. Holiday services at Grace Cathedral often draw hundreds of people to the church filling it to capacity. For many people, Holiday Church Service at glide is a yearly tradition. Services at the church on ellis street are free and open to the public. In addition to the service, glide said hundreds of people at special Christmas Eve lunch next to the owner of San Franciscos house of primer. All that, the owner of the iconic sentences go restaurant donated 2000 pounds of prime rib to glide so everyone at the tenderloin church could have a delicious holiday meal. They have donated the beef for 25 years and people look forward to the special meal all year long. Prime rib is a specialty. It is a gift. It is about standing with the most vulnerable in our community and letting them know that they are special too. We come together as a community to do that. They will serve more than 5000 meals to those in need, all possible to food donations and thousands of volunteers who work to make the holiday special for everyone. Volunteers at Saint Anthonys wrapped up their christmas curbside donation drive. Volunteers collected more than 3000 pairs of socks, several hundred hand hinted scarves and hats and dozens of hams for those in need. A special holiday meal is planned for christmas tomorrow. Donations support the Free Clothing program and the social work center. One person is dead and two others injured after a shooting at a bar in vallejo. It happened at 11 45 pm last night on york street. One of the victims was found in a parking lot and pronounced dead at the scene. A second man found inside the bar and a woman were hurt but they will be okay. It is not clear what led up to the shooting and no arrests have been made. A 10,000 reward is being offered to find the gun man who killed an oakland dog owner who had survived another attempt on his life this month. The Bay Area News Group reports 54yearold Jimmy Martinez and his dog were first shot and wounded on december 4 in a parking dispute. Martinez credited his pet for saving his life and fighting off the attacker. His gofundme account was set up and his dog. The shooting prompted martinez to move to a different part of the city in his rv but Authorities Say he was shot and killed in a confrontation friday night outside of the vehicle. Investigators are looking into whether or not there two shootings are connected. An Animal Support group is looking for someone to adopt the dog who is said to be sweet but shy. In los angeles, a man is dead and eight other are hospitalized after police were called to the canoga park area. Police responded to a call about a man wearing a gas mask and holding a machete outside of a home where children lived. One neighbors as the people who lived in the house had a history of problems and police have been called to the same home earlier this week. Another neighbor heard five shots and then everything went quiet. No officers were injured and police have not said when they will have any updates.
