Even in the most difficult of times. Reporter time is now 5 33. A man convicted of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar will go to prison for the rest of his life. We were in the courtroom as the sentence was read. And she talked with the parents of sierra lamar. Reporter outside the hall of justice in san jose tuesday afternoon. Sierra lamars parents exchanged bittersweet hugs. This after was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The gutless punk who raped and murdered sierra lamar and held her family hostage for six years has finally been served today. Reporter the final chapter came after the judge denied the defenses motion for a new trial. And five years after the 15 yearold girl went missing on her way to a bus stop and has not been seen since. You never have closure and the pain never goes away unfortunately. But this world is going to be safer, one less cowardly evil person on the streets it definitely makes a difference. Reporter her mother arrived carrying postersized photos of the teenager. Her parents wiped away tears and addressed the convicted killer. The only thing we can hope for is that prison will be a hell for him. And that what hes done will eat away at his brain like a cancer. Reporter the clean shaven 26yearold looked down as sierras parents spoke and had similar reaction when learning his fate. Sierras clothes were found with his dna, and her hair was found on a rope in his car. Deeply unsatisfying. We still dont know where sierra is. Sierras mother wore this necklace and bracelet with her daughters name and hopes that Garcia Torres will reveal where she is. I think about her all the time. And its hard to believe that this happened. I wake up every day thinking its a dream. But its reality. Reporter Garcia Torres reality is live in prison. Its expected to take a week to move him from the main jail in san jose to a maximum security prison which has not been decided. The preliminary hearing for the defendants in the ghost ship fire could wrap up in the coming days. Each are charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. Witnesses testified that the warehouse where 36 people died last year was a death trap. And oakland fire captain took the stand saying he worried about the conditions inside. Indeed it was a death trap that night when the people who came to the party couldnt get out. There was no alarms. There was no smoke detectors, there were no exit signs. Reporter when the preliminary hearing ends, judge Jeffrey Horner will determine whether the two men will go to trial. The burden of proof is much lower during a preliminary hearing than it is during a trial. Police in san jose investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a vta light rail train during the evening commute. Jessie gary says witnesses saw the man moments before the train hit him. Reporter fire, vta, and sheriffs officials responded during the height of the rush hour. A man walking across north first street near rosemary was struck and killed by a vta train. When it stop this happened the middle of the street on a green light, i could see something was wrong. Reporter a witness says the victim was trying to take a shortcut to the other side of north first street. Crossing at the tracks instead of at a crosswalk. That creates a danger for both pedestrians and train commuters. Our trains which have to say on our tracks they cant swerve in front of you. Thrive. Monday nights fire in the Oakland Hills destroyed two homes under construction. It started on snake road in month claire just before 11 30 monday night forcing dozens of evacuations. The high winds made the fire fight tougher. People in the neighborhood quickly saw the danger. I was in bed and about to go to sleep and my whole room turned orange. And i look out and the whole four story new construction home was completely engulfed in flames. Along with the two homes under construction, other homes suffered exterior damage but no injuries were reported. Fire crews in Southern California are making more progress against the wildfires burning in four counties. In ventura and Santa Barbara counties, the fire is 25 contained. Its the 5th largest fire in state history. 18,000 homes and other buildings are still threatened by the fire. The other fires in los angeles and san diego counties are all more than 95 contained at this point. And the fire burning near Magic Mountain Amusement Park is fully contained and crews remain on the scene to keep it from flaring up. The san jose City Council Approved a village of 40 tiny houses. The big question is where to build it. The city requirements say villages have to be a quarter mile away from schools, more than 500 feet away from homes. And the council will consider three possible locations next month. City leaders hope to have one tiny home village in each of the 10 council districts. The National Parks service is reducing the number of days it will allow visitors in for free. The park service gave no explanation. There are four free admission days planned for 2018. And now theyve warmed up to 38 degrees. And bayside temps are chilly. Richmond is 42. And theres an observation at oakland that shows 41 and 42. And 45 in alameda. And by the bay with the water temps up. Thats pretty cool. We are locked in. And theres a low to the south not doing much. They are cut off from the jet stream. And a high to the north. And once they lock in they are hard to displace or breakdown. Cold mornings and a dry air mass. Unbelievably dry. And cant hardly get any clouds. And 60s on the temps. 6 00, sal tells us the traffic its moderate. And i dont see anything major. I see that traffic is going to be slowing in many areas. I want to mention that the east bay and the south bay seem to be where the busiest traffic is. And on 80 westbound you can see traffic taking 27minute toss drive between the carquinez bridge and the montague expressway well talk about
