The house passed a somewhat different tax reform bill yesterday which will have to be reconciled with the senate version. Safe to say the president would not be pleased if he snookered again . The American People will lose the most if this doesnt go forward. A nonpartisan analysis of the senate bill found it would eventually raise taxes on low and middle income taxpayers while giving deep reductions to wealthier people. The things you have in your pockets, put those inside the bag when you go through security because a lot of times people in a rush trying to make their flights will leave something valuable like your phone, like your wallets, your car keys, behind at the security and then you have a problem. All week here we have been reporting on the future of Artificial Intelligence, robots, virtual reality, driverless cars, just a few ways that ai is becoming a reality. And tonight in the final part of this series, ktvus tom vacar takes a look at where this Technology May take us in the future. Reporter ibms super computer watson every day gathers every scrap of Information Available on every kind of cancer and then analyzes it. It then suggests promising areas of research, medical protocols and treatments, faster and better than very large groups of human researchers, scientists and doctors. Many now believe that prevention of cancer or its cures will come much quicker now from machines that learn from human studies, successes and failures. Eventually, Artificial Intelligence may do away with everything from alzheimers to infections. There are people who believe that maybe Artificial Intelligence can even become Something Better than humans, that it is kind of the next evolutionary step that it will be able to surpass some of what we know to be human limitations. Reporter robots could provide constant meaningful and affordable elderly and disabled care and supplement human companionship. The solution to Climate Change will almost surely come from Artificial Intelligence that will look at what affects climate in ways yet unimaginable. It all boils down to the mat matt cal algorithms humans put into computers, machines and robots designed to learn and think for themselves and eventually come individual thinking beings, the nonhuman progeny of humans. Interesting thing is it may well be that computers may someday again decades, centuries into the future, may be able to invent new elements that we havent yet found. People are talking right now absolutely about legal personhood for ai, for example and whether ai that writes software can have copyrights rights to their creations. Reporter beyond that, we could send thinking robots to distant unsurvivable planets to mine for and return to earth Precious Metals and other valuable materials. They could even manufacture additional and replacement robots right there on site better than themselves. Through terraforming, they could even make ready distant planets and moons for human habitation. Back here on earth, Artificial Intelligence will speed up the manufacture of human organs, just as we now manufacture replacement knees, hips and limbs. Eventually, humans may evolve themselves into humanhybrid cyborgs. Some technologist are comfortable with that. Who says that we are the culmination of everything . Maybe this is the next step. Reporter all of this will revolutionize the ways we live and work. The danger, massive loss of jobs. Already, forwardthinking corporations are investing in Robot Technology not just to build cars and deliver packages but to do almost anything imaginable. But artificially Intelligent Machines could also conjure up or create new jobs for humans. Tech shop a company with locations in san jose, San Francisco, redwood city and across the nation announced it was closing for good this week. That left hundreds of artists, inventors and Small Business owners scrambling to find new spaces to do their work. Ktvus ann rubin has the story. Reporter she moved downtown just to be closer to tech shop. Known as a maker space, it has a laser cutter and other industrial machinery she needed for her souvenir and jewelry business but couldnt afford on her own. Its, you know, where i my business was born and where i work on my business. It was pretty much everything for the business. Reporter but wednesday everything changed when tech shop announced it was filing for bankruptcy and closing its u. S. Locations. The ceo says the company hasnt been profitable. He said as makers we must learn from our mistakes. For those who use the space many of whom paid in advance the news came without warning. Then they all closed down same time, same day, no notice, no way for us to get our stuff out in and organized manner and wind down and find alternate arrangements right before the holidays. Reporter the city of san jose had worked hard to woo and keep tech shop downtown. Now they are hoping others can fill the void. Hopefully, well be able to connect people who are looking for this kind of support resources that tech shop provided to existing or new providers. Thats how Silicon Valley works. Reporter still, those involved with tech shop they say were blindsided, leaving thousands of personal property equipment and at least one robot from estonia trapped inside. Even employees said they didnt know it was coming. John coleman was offered a job as an instructor last week i was looking forward to it. A little disappointed but, you know, thats the way life goes, you know . There are ups and downs. Reporter as for people who still have personal property or projects inside, you can contact a courtappointed trustee to arrange a time to get them. In san jose, ann rubin, ktvu fox 2 news. Back now to that breaking news in San Francisco, the dump truck rollover that killed the driver of the dump truck and is causing just an absolute massive traffic jam on 101 in the southbound lanes near hospital curve. Joining us is the chp. Officer, can you tell us what happened and from what i understand, this may also have involved a muni bus . Yes. Good evening. From what we have been able to discover so far is we have a muni bus traveling southbound on 101 next to a dump truck also traveling the same direction and we are still trying to determine what happened but the two vehicles came into contact we have other. The muni bus had minor damage to the latest. The dump truck ended up rolling over on to its side and unfortunately the driver of the dump truck was killed from the collision. My understanding is there were several parties on the minibus that had some complaints of some injuries, not life threatening but two were taken to the hospital for treatment. Officer williams what can you tell us about the closures right now . We see two lanes, it appears, of traffic that are now getting by on highway 101 near the cesar chavez offramp there. What can you tell us about the traffic backup . It appears to be huge right now on this friday night. Reporter yes. Its obviously a major impact. Were talking about a major artery going south. The two left lanes are currently open for southbound 101. But the two right lanes are still closed for the investigation. And, of course, that backup, i would imagine, is going all the way back across and affecting bay bridge traffic as well coming into the city. Officer, in a case like this because the driver, unfortunately, died, how long will this investigation take, do you think, and how long until those other lanes might be able to be reopened . You know, right now, we do have the medical examiners on scene and we are going to allow them to do their jobs. Once thats done, well upright the tow truck and then hopefully that will be cleared. Our hope is that this should be done within the next hour. And then all lanes would be open. But, of course, expect there will be significant residual delays from this. And officer, the one thing that i think when i mean, were looking at helicopter pictures here from skyfox, the backup just goes on and on and on. And it seems to me that the problem here, some of these people may be going to the airport. There really is no good detour if youre caught in this backup. Reporter well, if youre caught, there is no good way out of this. But if you can, if you can try to avoid the area, possibly using the 280 going south, it will also get you to the airport coming through the city. So thats definitely what we would recommend doing because right now, traffic is very slow coming south on 101. All right. Officer williams, thank you for the update. We want to let our viewers know again that major traffic delays right now on highway 101 near the cesar chavez off ramp after a dump truck overturned and collided with a city bus, a muni bus there and several people they said were taken to the hospital on that muni bus. Of course, the driver of the dump truck was killed. The coroner is on the scene. Two lanes are still shut down. And there are going to be major delays in that area throughout the night affecting many people heading for the airport. The backup stretches across the bay bridge and thats just a huge backup at the bay bridge toll plaza, as well. Hopefully, theres the bridge right there, and you see oh. Just bumpertobumper the whole way. Hopefully, the officer was saying that maybe in the next hour or hour and a half or so they will be able to wrap up their investigation and re open those lanes. But well, you can see the result there. Again, he was mentioning well, if you are caught in this, there is no good alternative. But if you get off the freeway, you could theoretically take 280 and circumvent that area. But i imagine 280 is also backed up because thats what most people are probably trying to do. It just goes all the way across the bridge if you are in the east bay and need to go to the airport, go south to the san mateo bridge and go that way. Dont come into San Francisco. The traffic backup is enormous and its going to take a long time for this to clear up. Well keep an eye on this. If there are new developments well bring them to you. People stuck trying to get to the airport. Ambulances, absolutely. And also, its also sad that a person died. Most certainly. But thats just a lot of people impacted. Yeah. Bill, thank you. We have more coming up right after the break. In some neighborhoods in the bay area, you may have noticed a lot of wild turkeys because their population is exploding. For some, the nonnative birds are a sideshow. For others a nuisance. In our partnership with sfgate, Frank Mallicoat spent the day a rainy thursday tracking down a few of those birds. Reporter Tilden Park Golf Course and no golfers, too much rain, the perfect time for the wild turkeys to take over the number one fairway and strut their stuff. Its a natural area so theres deer, turkeys. When it gets dark, you hear the coyotes start howling. So i think everybody appreciates the natural surroundings and the animals here. Reporter while tilden is a natural habitat, during the drought many turkeys ventured into more urban settings in search of food. This flock of turkeys took over this Pleasant Hill yard while these birds are on an albany city street. They are treated well. And they arent going anywhere anytime soon. They are just in everybodys yard and just kind of everywhere. Reporter this lafayette neighborhood is full of turkeys. Backyards the perfect breeding ground. It butts up to open space. Were in turkey country. I guess so. Reporter the birds parade through his yard and occasionally take flight. We have had some, like, on the roof fly right over your head and kind of a a turkey flying at you like a 30pound bird, you know, its kind of scary. Reporter but the birds arent scared. They can do damage, too, to your car and yards. But they continue to multiply in the suburbs. California fish game doesnt survey wild turkeys. The last estimate was a quarter million birds in 2004. That number has gone up but how much, no one knows. Around thanksgiving, they tend to thin out. [ laughter ] but i cant prove that one. So reporter permits to hunt turkeys are up 50 in Contra Costa County in the last few years but suburban turkeys are likely here to stay. Frank mallicoat, ktvu fox 2 news.
