After steve bannon declares mcconnell enemy number one. At least as far as im concerned, closer than ever but before. Dana we will discuss the impact with Senate Majority leader live on fox news sunday. And. He called for people here today to express his condolences the best way he could. Dana the white house chief of staff weighs in on the president response to the death of former u. S. Soldiers. We will discuss with the panel how the issue has become political this week. Plus. I was the first Republican Press secretary. Dana Sarah Sanders unbalancing life at home and at the white house. All right now on fox news sunday. And hello again from fox news in washington. President trump strive to overhaul the nations tax code cleared a major hurdle this week when the Senate Approved its budget blueprint. The house is poised to adopt it next week. In an oped in the usa today. President trump writes revising our tax code is not just a policy discussion, it is a moral one, because were not talking about the governments when money, we are talking about your money, your hard work. We begin here in washington with the white house budget director Mick Mulvaney. Welcome back to fox news sunday. Director mulvaney thank you for having me. Dana you are my first guest on my first ever fox news sunday. Director mulvaney im trying to screw up too bad. Dana me too. You must feel better than you did a week ago about tax form. Director mulvaney very much so. We are hearing out of the house may go ahead and either take the Senate Amendments or move very quickly to accept them and we may save as many as ten or 12 legislative days. Its a big deal. Sounds like not much when you hear the end of october, but in the congressional calendar thats a long time and it really does buy us some more time then more opportunity to get this done before the end of the year. Dana especially because treasury secretary mnuchin promised the president would have a bill by december comedy think its realistic . Director mulvaney i absolutely do. If the house really does take the Senate Budget when they come back on i think its tuesday this week, actually moves the ball a lot further a lot quicker towards that goal in. Dana another thing secretary mnuchin fet is the only thing is the Corporate Tax rate, which in your proposal would be 20 coming down from 35 . If you had to negotiate on that number, would you . Director mulvaney to priorities from the very beginning of the president have been that middle taxpayers will pay less and it will be simple for them. Thats number one. Number two, that the Corporate Tax rate will come down. We wanted 15 , the house kept pushing and pushing and pushing, talking about 20, would love to get back on the 15 as we continue the negotiation. Those two things are sort of the foundation of a tax plan for the president. I dont think the house really wants to negotiate those very much. Dana i would agree. There is some possible concerns. Lets listen to House Freedom caucus determined meadows, because theres a little bit of a possibility for fourth bracket for high tax earners. With listening. Im against having a top rate. If were going to do that then we need to just admit that at times that having a top rate for those that earn a Million Dollars or more is maybe a political reality, but it doesnt necessarily boost the economy. Dana right now with their brackets, the plan would take it to three, but in order to do the pay for it is a possibility a fourth tax bracket. Director mulvaney people forget we actually have four rates now, zero, 12, 45. Is a lot of discussion on the hill of adding a top bracket. We are agnostic about that. Its not a big piece for us. If the house needs to add it to pass a great tax reform, thats great, if they dont, thats great too. Its not what is driving us for the white house. Dana as i understand it they believe that taxes and higher taxes to press Economic Growth and investment. If it keeps creeping up will it depress what you want to do . Director mulvaney our opinion of that has not changed. We want the very best tax package that can actually pass, and if theres things the house has to do with the senate has to do to get that last boulder to to get it across the finish line thats up to them. That fifth bracket is not a priority for the white house, we are not pushing it, we dont necessarily want it but something in the greater scheme of things if they told us us we have to take it we will go with it. Dana if that happened do you think that senator schumer and warren, who have complained that the tax plan doesnt do enough to tax the rich, do you think that they could come on board . Director mulvaney no chance. Ive asked a couple democrats if they would ever vote to lower the Corporate Tax rate, and they said no. Its bizarre since they were reported, themselves, those in the past. Some democratsupported bills that schumer has talked about that actually lower the Corporate Tax rate. President obama talked about lowering the Corporate Tax rate. Its almost since its president Trumps Administration and its a republican plan, now there are against it. Dana they are in just say no mode. I do have a question, wyoming and colorado, not high tax states. Ive been trying to understand the issue about the state and local Tax Deductions. This it seems like it could be a big Sticking Point with the big revenue raiser in order to pay for the tax cuts, which i know you care about, is about 40 House Republicans who were present taxpayers and those high tax states like new york, california, new england. They are saying this is a deal breaker for them. Director mulvaney i hope its not. At foundation here one of the things where driving at is fairness. And if you live in wyoming and i live in new york and we make the same amount of money on house was worth the same amount of money and house, cars worth the same amount of money, shouldnt we pay the same amount of federal tax . I think its as, the president think that yes, most people think that we should pay the same amount. Right now if you live in wyoming, all other things being equal, you pay more tax than someone who lives in new york. Thats just not fair and its something we really are hoping to change and we hope the house and senate can accept that. Dana some are saying that those taxpayers in those states would actually end up disproportionately paying for the tax cut bill if this stays in there. Director mulvaney you have to be careful there because one of the reasons its so hard to do tax reform and we havent done tax reform on the scale since the 1980s, we can always go in and look at one provision and say this is bad for this person, i cant vote for. You have to look at it holistically, you have to look at the entire impact of the tax plan. I hurt Governor Cuomo in new york states tax plan would raise taxes of every person in new york. Thats just false. When you look at it writ large, for example doubling the standard deductions, most people arent going to be interested in it because they will not take it. Dana they wont have to. Director mulvaney thats exactly right. Dana 36 years ago today that u. S. National debt cost 1 trillion for the first time. Today its 20 trillion. I know you came to washington, d. C. , because he wanted to combat overspending. Weve talked about it in january after confirmation hearing. A trip down memory lane. I believe is a matter of principle the debt must be addressed to you know rather than later. I also know that fundamental changes are necessary in the way washington spends and taxes and if we were living want to help the economy. This must include changing the physical path, which is unsustainable. Part of that also means taking a hard look at government waste and ending it. Dana i know that your principles havent changed. I fully understand that politics has. Have the economics changed . Director mulvaney all that has changed is sort of the politics. What has changed is we sent 54 billion worth of Discretionary Spending reduction ideas to the house. I think the house during the day or 5 billion of it. I dont think the senate took any of it. Its very hard to lower spending in this environment. What was done now is sit back if they are crowded with balancing the budget in the 1990s . We sort of restrained the growth of government so that government revenues, tax receipts grew faster than expenditures. If thats what were trying to do. We are not abandoning fiscal restraint by any measure, i would never do that but we are sitting there and going okay, if we can slow the expenditures but increase the revenues by growing the economy. As america gets wealthier, the famous coauthor, the government actually gets wealthier too, thats how we balanced it in the 1990s, its how we will do it today, but when he tax reform to do it. Dana if you get tax reform passed and the resulting Economic Growth that you project, would you try to revisit with President Trump your concerns about the growth of entitlement spending . Director mulvaney a meeting with the president just the other day, we walked over some of the numbers. The deficit came out last week about what is driving the deficit. I actually said, look, heres where it is, heres where it isnt. Im going to come back to you again and i will want to talk to about entitlement spending. He said i will still not do it but im happy to have a conversation. Same discussion we had in the spring, i promise people i will not change social security, and i said thats fine, my job is to show you what that means. I think thats the right way to do it. If we do get this growth, you will start to see that deficit that turndown. Dana are you concerned with the Health Care Markets about confusion whether the president could support the bipartisan shortterm fix that that would hurt your ability to actually hit that 3 growth target . Director mulvaney not at all. If im surprise the democrats are all of a sudden concerned about uncertainty in the Health Care Markets when its been uncertain since the obamacare pass. Concern about rates going up when theyve been going up since the day pass. Thats the politics of the day. We were seeing the president say is i will be okay with making these payments if i get something for people in exchange. If i get something that actually helps people. Give us more ability on associated health plans, give us more ability to sell across state lines. Give us tools that actually help people and we will talk about looking at alexander murray. Dana when the president ghost they want to stay for lunch with the senators, whats the main message he wants them to walk away with . Director mulvaney tax form for certain. The one thing it doesnt get a lot of discussion in the media is the lack of progress on our nominees. I was very excited to hear mr. Mcconnell commit this week to having the senate start to work on monday and friday and even the occasional weekend. As a house member, i sort of laughed at that. Former house member. I think president obama had twice as many of his confirmations nominees in place. We need our people in place. Dana it seems the senate has done well confirming judges, but the rest of the government does need to be fulfilled. Director mulvaney done a tremendous job in judges, but we need them to start working more. Why . Because the democrats are obstructing at every turn. They are obstructing people going to get 80 or 90 votes, people who were never contentious in the first place. Its obstruction for the sake of obstruction. Dana back in their own districts. Thank you for being here, director Mick Mulvaney. Joining us down from sacramento is xavier becerra, the attorney general of california. Hes leading a coalition of 18 states and the district of columbia against the Trump Administrations efforts to end obamas payments to insurers. Everything from health care to immigration, to clean energy. Thank you for being with us today. Thanks, dana. Dana a federal court had ruled that the payments, the csrs, the subsidies for health care in payments. But they were solved unlawful because they were never appropriated by the congress. Tell me about your lawsuit and how you expect to win it given that information. A. G. Becerra that decision has been put on hold. The Obama Administration first coming out the Trump Administration are in court against that decision and we have no states joined in that effort as well. To try and keep not only that decision on hold, but permanently on hold. And to move forward with the Affordable Care act because millions of people depend on it, some 7 Million People will probably be affected if the Trump Administrations efforts to kill the cautionary subsidies that people depend on two a afford their deductibles and their copayments and insurance are taken away. Dana what is the time right for your lawsuit . Do you know when you will expect to hear anything back from the courts . A. G. Becerra we went in asking for the court to give us an emergency ruling. What the Trump Administration did last week, a little bit more than a week ago, because it was supposed to under the Current Administration take effect immediately under their order and we can afford to have that kind of uncertainty. When there are people who are daytoday depending on their health insurance. Rebecca in california, modesto, california, mid 30s. Shes a quadriplegic. She has constant visits to the doctor. She right now pays about 15 and copayments for those visits. Without those copayments being made part of the aca, her payments go up to about 105 every visit. Someone like that cannot afford to have this kind of uncertainty hanging over her. She requires that health care she depends on it. Dana given all the uncertainty we were talking about, going forward, would you personally support Something Like what senator Bernie Sanders has suggested, a medicare for all plan . A. G. Becerra absolutely. Ive been a supporter for medicare for all for the 24 years that i was in congress. This year as attorney general, i would buy for that if we had an opportunity to put that in the state of california because i think what we do is we give people thought certainty that they will be able to access a doctor or hospital. The worst thing we used to have with situations where young families wouldnt know if they should take their children to the hospital because it could lead to personal bankruptcy. That ended with the Affordable Care act. If we cant go back to those days and so absolutely when you give people access to medicare and talk to seniors who have their medicare who say keep your hands off my medicare, i think it would have the same effect on most americans if they knew they could depend on Something Like medicare for themselves as well. Dana we would have to call Mick Mulvaney back to asking how we will pay for it. A. G. Becerra it saves us money. It saves us a great deal of money. Dana maybe we can have you back and have the big debate when that becomes an issue. Let me ask you about the lawsuit you filed about dreamers and daca. Im curious, the president has asked the congress to come back to him with an actual lot instead of relying on the obama executive order for dreamers. Why not wait to see how that turns out before pushing forward on this lawsuit . A. G. Becerra again, if the Trump Administration werent putting people lives at risk, their ability to continue to go to school, to work, to provide for their family, then perhaps we can wait, but donald trump didnt wait. He decided to repeal the daca altogether and now we have to act because we cant afford to put people in this kind of limbo so we are out there to protect at least in california, more than 200,000 young people who are fighting really hard to continue to show that they belong in america. Dana you also said that you wouldnt deport them. Are they fearful for no reason at this point . A. G. Becerra if we had that kind of certainty, things would be different, but we dont. We know of dreamers who have been supported, deported for no reason with no criminal history, nothing that they particularly dead. At the same time, you dont want to put people in limbo this way, just the way were back want to lose her Affordable Care insurance because someone said dont worry, we will find another way for you to do it. She can afford that because she has a quadriplegic has to know that she can make her doctors visits. The theme dont make same thing with all the streamers in america who know america is the only home theyve ever had. We can afford to put them in limbo either and thats where were going to fight as hard as we can. I say that not just as the ag, but i think senate democrats. Dana have to make it quick, theres always lawsuits that you are filing, since 2014 the number of californians saying they support seceding from the union has grown from 20 to more than onethird. Steve bannon this week said that california is to President Trump what South Carolina was to andrew jackson. Are you comfortable with that sort of ballot language, even if its unconstitutional, would you allow it to be on the ballot . A. G. Becerra we all get to express ourselves and there certain people in california were frustrated with this administration constantly taking digs and hurting california. But i will tell you this, california is the economic engine of the United States of america. We, on our own as a states, could be the sixth economic power in the world. The u. S. Needs california as much as i believe california needs to be part of the United States. We will do everything we can to be the leading force for this country rather than be out of it. I think we can continue to be the leader in it. Dana thank you, i appreciate you joining us. A. G. Becerra thanks, dana. Dana have a good day. Up next, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell on his united front with President Trump. Despite the gridlock blocking much of the president s promises. And hey, unmanaged depression, dont get too comfortable. Were talking to you, cost inefficiencies, and data without insights. And fragmented care, stop getting in the way of patient recovery and pay attention. Every single one of you is on our list. At optum, were partnering across the Health System to tackle its biggest challenges. At optum, were partnering across the Health System retail. Under pressure like never before. And its connected technology thats moving companies forward fast. Ecommerce. Real time inventory. Virtual changing rooms. Thats why retailers rely on comcast business to deliver consistent Network Speed across multiple locations. Every corporate office, warehouse and store near or far covered. Leaving every competitor, threat and challenge outmaneuvered. Comcast business outmaneuver. Dana republicans built for a legislative win after the failure of repeal and replace. Senate republicans courted win by passing a budget deal, paving the way to past tax reform, a major republican priority. Joining us now from louisville is Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell. Thank you for being here today. Good morning. Dana the first nine months of the year did not produce a legislative when the president expected. The passage of the budget bill and i want to ask a firm, do you get the sense that republicans can sort of take victory . Tax reform is important. 31 years ago today Ronald Reagan signed tax form, we intend to accomplish that between now and the end of the year. But the suggestion that the president has not been able to change a lot of things are simply not true. With the Supreme Court with neil gorsuch. Other Court Nominations coming through. And people in the agencies dealing with the regulatory rampage of the last eight years. The president is making a lot of changes in the senate with sentence of the personal business, is helping the president accomplish these changes. We intend to achieve tax reform as well. Dana health care was hard, tax reform apparently sounds like its supposed to be easier. I dont exactly know how that is, but i can see that the path, especially at 51 votes, makes sense. I dont know if you heard, Mick Mulvaney was talking about this possibility that there might be a compromise where an additional tax bracket would be added, maybe a socalled millionaires tax. Is that something you could support . Senator mcconnell i hate to get into the details of this. Its going to be hashed out in the open and the finance committee and the senate and the ways and means in the house. The overall goal is middle class tax relief, the stopping of job exportation because of our horrible business tax structure in this country. To get the hundred growing agai again. That coupled with the regulatory changes the president is already implementing, we think that gives us a chance to achieve 3 growth. There wasnt a single year of 3 growth during the obama years. The details of it, such as the one you mentioned are all going to be hashed out in the committees, an open process, and then we will take the bills up on the floor and see what they look like at that point. Dana moving on, Alabama Senate hopeful roy moore. The super pac that you allied with, he could be a really key vote on tax reform. Your friend steve bannon, a major backer of roger moore, roy moore. He says that you are the roadblock to the president getting his agenda accomplished. This revolt is going from alabama to arizona. [cheers and applause] the last couple of days, mitch has been saying this thing, you have to win. Winters make policy, losers go home. Mitch, note to self, mitch, big Luther Strange and little bobby corker are both going home. [cheers and applause] these people, its 20. Dana even the president didnt really dispute his frustration with the senate republicans. I will be honest, they are not getting the job done and i can understand where steve bannon is coming from because im not happy about it and a lot of people arent happy about it. Dana senator mcconnell, is it a must pass, and if you get the legislative success, is it the antidote to Steve Bannons agitation against you . Senator mcconnell let me just say with regard to the element you are referring to, theyve been order for a number of years. If the cost five senate seats in 2012 and 2010. We wouldve gotten them sooner but for the fact they were able to nominate people, could not win in november. An 14 they were defeated everywhere, in 16 they were defeated everywhere and the differences weve been in the majority. Two congresses in a row. This is not about personalities, this is about achievement. In order to make policy you have to actually win the election. The kind of people that are supported by the element youve just been referring to our specialists in defeating republican candidates in november. Thats what this interparty skirmish is about. Our goal is to nominate people in the primaries next year who can actually win and the people who win will be the ones who when asked the agenda. Dana you mentioned that in the rose garden, you talk to the president about those four individuals, but i was curious about two conservatives that are now actually very good ally so you didnt initially support in the primaries. Marco rubio and pat toomey. Could it be that there are some good g. O. P. Senators that can emerge from primaries that you maybe wouldnt anticipate . Senator mcconnell are supported both of those senators many times, we are on the same side. The point is going to make policy you have to win recollections. Some of these folks that youve been quoting, as i said, our specialists in nominating people who lose. But isnt going to help President Trump achieve his agenda. Any of the Republican Senate and a Republican House to confirm judges to pass legislation that are important to him into the country. Thats what this is really all about, trying to change america from the obama years and take it in a different direction. Dana you talked about judges and i know you must have spoken about that with the president because he talked about it in your press conference with him in the gross garden. On tuesday the president coming to have lunch with you and your members. Apparently they are frustrated not necessarily with judges, but the pace of confirmations of other nominees that the administration has put forward. Mick mulvaney just said the president is going to press the senate on that, what you think you will say . Senator mcconnell the democrats have made it hard, but they cant stop them. Ultimately we will get all of these nominees. They have slow the process down, which is been pretty exasperating, but they will not be able to win on any of these confirmations. We will confirm the mall, both administration positions enter the judiciary. Dana few worry that your personal unpopularity with republicans out in the country is weighing down your possibility to make sure that you can keep the senate next year . Senator mcconnell look, im not going to be on the ballot in any of these states and i dont think the candidates who are running late to take a position on me, the people in those states are interested in what the candidates can do for them. And for the country. Trying to cook off an issue like this is irrelevant, its only going to create divisions and make it more difficult for us to win in november, but i dont expect any candidate in america to sort of sign up on how they may vote for the majority leader of the senate a year and a half from now. Dana my last question is on a different topic. Theres the issue of regulation of the Silicon Valley giants, which is largely grown from a lack of federal regulation and interference. Do you think that that could be about to change with President Trump and the Republican Congress . Senator mcconnell i dont know. I think all of these are issues we need to take a look at and i think its in the early stages, trying to figure out with the way forward is. Dana senator mcconnell, thank you so much for being here with us this morning. Senator mcconnell okay, thank you. Dana up next we will bring in our sunday group to weigh in on the path ahead for tax cuts, what it could mean for the middle class, economy, and jobs. Dana coming up, they are back. Politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication. Some of the politics we see, what we thought we put that to bed. Dana we will ask our center panel about the power of the former president later on he is so offended because he was in the room when i made the call, and so were other people. The call was very nice he was so offended that somebody would be listening to that call. He actually couldnt believe it. Actually, he said to me, sir, this is not acceptable. Dana President Trump defending his defending his chief of staff in an interview with foxs maria bartiromo. Saying the congresswomans attack on john kelly were sickening. Time now for our sunday group, Jason Chaffetz, nelly fox news contributor. Columnist for the health, juan williams. Julie pace, Washington Bureau chief of the Associated Press and matthew continetti. Ive had a chance to be on the panel, but never to run the panel, so i will try to do my best. This is not a controversy at the white house anticipated before the Rose Garden Press Conference of Mitch Mcconnell. Soon as President Trump referenced of his predecessors handled outreach to family i knew they would have a firestorm on her hands. It included an appearance by general kelly in the Briefing Room of gold star father himself. This from congresswoman federico wilson. I feel very sorry for him because he feels such a need to lie on me, and im not even his enemy. And it didnt end there. President trump also took a stab at wilson saturday on twitter. I hope the Fake News Media keeps talking about wacky congresswoman wilson and that she is a representative is killing the democratic party. Julie, what is the white house thinking this morning . As you say, this is not a fight of the white house anticipated, but it was one thing they were led into day after day by the president himself. This is a president who does not like to admit when he is wrong. He does not like to back away from a fight, the strategy tends to be to push forward. Hes really been the one driving us forward every single day. John kelly backing him up at the podium. If white house officials certainly would like to put their attention on things like tax reform, which is really probably what the president is going to be judged on this year in terms of whether or not it has been a success or not. You saw the president out there again this morning, he feels like he needs to win, which is a bit odd because this is a fight where i dont think anybody comes across looking very good right now. Dana jason, as a former member of congress, if you think it was inappropriate to reveal the conversation of the first place . He really is a sacred moment. We were dealing with a family that has still coming to grips with the front door son or daughter that has lost their life. If theres got to be some way to raise the bar and say enough is enough, we are talking about military, we are talking with people who have lost their lives and they really do need to move on. Let me just say, the argument has been that she said something that wasnt true, that she said that the president said your son knew what he signed up for and the idea was wilson she just doesnt like President Trump. President trump seem to indicate that she had fabricated something. But it turns out in fact kelly comes out and says he did say that, it may be the context was a little off, but he did say that and then kelly attacked her by saying she took credit for the funding for an fbi office in florida, and that wasnt true. They are attacking wilson in a very aggressive manner, but i just think it has been unfair. Especially kellys use of the military and patriotism to cover for trump, i think its offensive. If you want accusation could be made about frederica wilson. Its unfortunate to me that any of this happened because grief is very personal, commanders in chief have to make very tough phone calls because of decisions that they may on their watch, what do you make of all of this . Who was politicizing who . Everybody seems to be politicizing different aspects of this incident. Larger questions involving what were the children stomach soldiers doing there in the first place . I would like to hear an explanation about what the mission was. We still dont know the details about the ambush in the assault. If President Trump has a two track presidency. On the one hand, you have the judges, the policies, deregulation, taxes and the budget. On the other hand you have to show men constant fights. Stick it was bob corker, this week its wilson. Dana dont forget the nfl. Thats a longrunning problem. Somehow hes able to balance the two of them together, but we see just this week that one can easily overshadow the other. President trump might want that to happen. Dana we certainly offer our condolences to the families of the fallen of the u. S. Soldiers. Secretary mattis had been on capitol hill giving senator mccain more information. Jason, can i ask you about this possibility that the republicans could get tax reform done. The health care was supposed to be so easy and i would seems like we all are talking like tax a firm is going to happen. Is there a catch . Speaker ryan said they will stay through christmas if need be to get tax or from done, only to go on an 11 day recess. The houses point this week to do something i didnt think they would do, to pass over a 10year period, a 47 trillion budget that only has 1 trillion they are going to cut. Republicans are swallowing hard on the pill that is supposed be very important to them, fiscal discipline, with no cuts, and once they get that done they are doing it on the promise that they will get tax reform, but they havent introduced a bill yet. Here we are at the end of october, coming up on it, and they havent yet introduced the bill. I dont think this will be easy, if it was easy it would be done along time ago. The budget was two and by law on april 15th and now here we are turning the corner and they still havent got that part done. Dana do find it strange that conservatives are talking about it like it Still Matters . We talked about it before in the 1980s. President reagan says i dont care about the deficit, its big enough to take care of itself. Dana are reductive at . The debt has increased accidentally. No one seems to be able to control it for some of the automatic spending reasons i think director Mick Mulvaney mention. I will say this, a lot is riding on this tax return. Because of the failure of Obamacare Repeal and replace, the centerpiece of President Trumps first year in office, if they dont get it done, politics in washington will be upended. Dana what do you think of this idea that they would add a millionaires tax in order to help pay for these tax cuts . Its fascinating to hear someone like Mick Mulvaney say we are agnostic about a fourth tax bracket. Its a play to try to get some more moderates, potentially conservative democrats on board. I think that you will see this internal fight thats happening behind the scenes among republicans on the detail of this really exposed to the open if you see a fourth tax bracket pushed through. Dana if republicans at a millionaires tax, what would schumer and warren complain about . I think congressman Jason Chaffetz is onto something, we dont have a revenue source, tell mike that would really offset the cost of the tax cut. This was supposed to be about tax reform, apparently thats not the issue now, where just under tax cuts. This really is disproportionately beneficial o the very rich. You at the fourth bracket but it still does nothing in terms of offsetting things like doing away with state and local deductions. Dana thats the big issue. Imagine no more mortgage deductions. Dana they are not saying that. They are making the case. Also in terms of her retirement contribution. The middleclass is not going to benefit because of the added tax on the rich. Dana for state and local Tax Deduction issue is a big deal. Wyoming, you think thats ridiculous, why did they get to do that, but for people who live around here its a big deal. Thats right. Whats fascinating to me about this fourth bracket issue youve introduced is when you are serving president bush, republicans would never do that. President trump, it shows you how the Republican Party has changed. In effect, most of President Trump supporters would have no problem at all with the fourth tax bracket affecting millionaires. It doesnt bring among democrats. Republicans are poised to pass 47 trillion 10year budget and didnt get a single democrat to come along. At least do something republican in that budget if youre going to give up this fourth bracket, what you get for . Doesnt sound like the democrats will come along. Dana did they use that fourth bracket to pay for dropping the state and Tax Deductions . They potentially could but i think the issue is fascinating because you hear states like california and new york, you automatically think democrats. A lot of republican representatives, theres 40 in the northeast alone. Dana panel, its time to take a break, we will see you a little later this hour. We will discuss the president s decision to green light the release of thousands of secret documents related to jfks assassination. Its a move that has conspiracy theorists buzzing. But first, i returned to the white house to check in with the second republican woman, and first mom, to serve as White House Press secretary. Dana alive look at 1600 pennsylvania avenue here in washington, where had the privilege to serve as press secretary for president george w. Bush. Earlier this week i returned to my old stomping grounds to sit down with the Current Press secretary, Sarah Sanders. What is your first news memory, and did it affect any of your education or career choices . The first one that comes to mind would probably be when my dad ran for the u. S. Senate in 1992, i was 9, and he lost. It was a devastating night for our family and i remember just the impact. It certainly gave me a greater appreciation for when you win versus when you lose. When he decided to run again did you, as a kid, did you not want him to . At that age it seemed fun and fascinating when most kids were going to summer camp i was doing the arkansas festival circuit. I thought it was all great and i loved the campaign aspect from a really early age, and i was excited for him. Your dad told me that you had a desk, an office when you were four years old. [laughter] i did, it was actually in his office. He had the big credenza and underneath that bottom part i would keep all of my own supplies, my tape and glue and scissors and make wonderful masterpieces im sure. I was the first republican woman press secretary, you are the second, the third overall. You were the first working mother to ever have this job. Everybody sees you all the time, we know that youre working 24 7, but how do you balance it all . One of the biggest things is the moment i do have with my kids have to be really present. Try to put my phone away and fully focus on the time that i have with them. I try to block out specific time, whether its early in the morning, i think its probably a blessing im an early riser. Thats the hardest thing about your job. For me its being away from my family. The other part is having and a credible partner my husband is supportive and he puts up with all of this and help keeps all of us afloat and i couldnt do it without having him as the support system to get through each day. In my book, my favorite piece of advice is choosing to be loved is not a career limiting decision. Was he your boss at some point . I was actually his boss. I was his boss. I think some people imagine that if ever want to have this job that its this magical moment and a cinderella story and the stars come out and theres a band. Everyone is so excited. That certainly was not my experience. There was no band, i can assure you. You didnt really have any time for a honeymoon, it was hit the ground running. It all happened within a four hour. Mark. I love the deputy job. I found in the deputy position, thats when you get to know the commander in chief really well. Pico i think any job in the white house is incredible. Ive always said if i ever walk into the building and im not in awe of being here and being part of it than ive been there too long and its time to go. Thankfully i still feel a sense of reverence every time i step into the building. Certainly every time i step into the Briefing Room and i hope i never lose that. I used to say a little prayer of thanks and gratitude as a marine opens the door. I also see a little prayer of god help me every day before walking into that room. And atlantic, he thought the administrations apparent tension with the press was overstated. Would you agree . No. [laughs] i know glenn well, but i think theres always going to be tension between whatever administration is in place at that time with the White House Press corps, but i do think that there is a heightened attention certainly between this administration and the press. Hold on, i want you to finish. I think you can see that in the coverage, ive been around press and work in politics my entire life and ive never experienced the kind of level of hostility i think we see daytoday. On the day of the las vegas massacre, that was the first day of my new show, the Daily Briefing. We were covering her briefing and a former press secretary was on is my guest. We watched you. The memory of those who display the ultimate expression of love in the midst of an unimaginable active fate will never fade. Showing that emotion was important and its not always easy to do at the podium. You want to i think project strength certainly from an administration standpoint, but i think at that moment the country was broken, and i felt like it was an appropriate time as ever to show the emotion of that situation. The biggest thing i wanted to do was talk about the spirit of our country. I wanted to make sure to communicate that. Like me, you are student body president , but unlike me, you come from a political family. Do you think you would ever see yourself running for office . I dont think so. Theres an opening. I never like to say never because it will come back to bite you. Every time i think i have a perfect plan for my life, god tells me otherwise. I never really envisioned sitting here having this conversation with you, not even as far back as may be years ago. So never say never, but i dont think thats part of the master plan for me. Again, right now its one day at a time and its trying to do the best i can. Dana up next, two former president s from two different parties way and on the state of politics today. But first, sarah and i went outside the west wing for a lightning, including the most embarrassing, embarrassing moment on the job so far. Time to wake up . Usually about 5 15. On your own, or with an alarm . With an alarm and usually a child. Whats the last thing you read before that . Usually the last email working most of the day. Marine one, or air force one . I think marine one, its a little bit more special, its a smaller group, so its pretty exciting. Coffee . Lots. Your most embarrassing moment as White House Press secretary so far. When i had a bring your child to work day, i just brought my little son, who is four no. President was going to go out and take a picture with all the kids, so im in the, walking him through, you will take the picture, walk back in. I look up and see the bushes in the rose garden violently shaking and then i see a little blonde head pop up and i see my sons head pop up. Theres a little boy in the bushes. Thats my son. Dana President Trump joining be a video message as all five former u. S. President s stand on one stage raising funds for hurricane relief. United, for a night at least. Yet just on thursday, into separate speeches, both former president s, bush and obama, made remarks against the current white house. Discontent deepened and sharpened. Partisan conflicts. Bigotry seems in bolding. Our politics seem more vulnerable to conspiracy theories, and outright fabrication. Do you want a politics of division and distraction, or do you believe in a better kind of politics, one where we Work Together and listen to each other and move this country forward . Dana we are back in with the panel. Julie, the white house didnt take the bait, watch this. [indistinct] when was the last time President Trump spoke to present bush . Im not sure the last time they spoke, but our understanding is that those comments were not directed towards the president. Dana i thought that was skillful and smart, what did you think . I thought it was very smart. Generally you try to avoid tank link even like trump, who was i was talking about before, likes to tangling pretty much any issue. You try to avoid tangling with the former occupants of the oval office. Theyre such a small group of people who know what that job is like. I do think it was remarkable that both bush and obama in the separate set of remarks came out and said fairly similar things, expressed concerns about divisions in the country. President bush has been so careful about weighing in and politics for almost a decade now and obama has been careful. Dana i have a theory that if president bush had given that same speech about values he had long held, if he had given it in october 2014, the media would have said it was against president obama for leaving iraq too soon, not having america be the front leader in the world, for dividing america. At this time the media tried to drive this wedge between both President Trump and the former president s. I do think president bushs remarks were more general than president obamas, which were in the midst of a campaign for a virginia governor. What striking me to the degree that they overlap their messages. I think that feeds into President Trumps critique of the twoparty duopoly. Dana it looked like a frontal attack even though president bushs remarks were scheduled in your in advance and president obamas was in virginia. Steve bannon has has these the most disruptive president in history of the country, but that was in the same speech where he was common for republican unity, so how is that going . Its pretty hard to rectify those two. With to be careful. It lets attack people and policy, but lets not play to the democratic hands with this division based on identity. This identity politics really does scare me. When you turn that fire internally, thats the fastest way to becoming a minority part party. I think all the president s being together last night and inviting President Trump, to make all that in one showed a lot about america. Juan, i want to talk to about President Trump. He has a big decision whether to release long secret documents related to the assassination of president kennedy. This is what he tweeted. Subject to the further information i will be allowing as president belong blocked and classified files for jfk to be open. Are you excited about that . Anybody who has lived through that period and is curious about american history, what president bush said about these being so open to sip, conspiracy theories, wouldnt it be something if ted cruz is dad really was dana we could find out. According to a 1992 law regarding the kennedy assassination, everything is supposed to be released by thursday, the final papers. You have about 3,000 files still there. Then there are other papers that have things that have been redacted, maybe they would be fully released now. Theres some resistance on the part of mike pompeo, the cia director, because apparently these papers involve the activities of cia agents were looking at Lee Harvey Oswald in mexico city, his ties to the cubans, to russia and the likes. It could be that you have some sources, methods of operation revealed, maybe even some negligence by cia officials. But in terms of real revelation about why Lee Harvey Oswald acted on what happened, it doesnt seem to be there according to historians. Dana matthew come if you want to see them released . I do, it its interesting. Of President Trump 2000s that his face with the readers of the national enquirer. This is a perfect move for his base. A little better than the birther. Dana and that is it for today, i will see you tomorrow for the Daily Briefing at 2 00 eastern on fox news channel. Chris is back next week, have a great week and we will see you next fox news sunday.
