Of water this morning at a time from agricultural retention ponds just north of calistogas east side. Its been a day long rotation of chopper after chopper taking their huge bags of water from here to the west side of the napa river where mount st. Helena rises above the valley. They were precision dumping their loads on a smoke over on a smoky fire thats rapidly climbing the mountain. At the top of the mountain, a large group of contract and inmate hand crews were taking positions near the summit. They come from cal fire. The u. S. Forest service and the National Park service. Theres one reason and one reason only to have this much fire power here at the top of st. Helena to keep it from getting over the top and should it get over the top, they can run right down the mountain into middletown. Between the mountaintop crews and the water drop spot well below, we then happened upon inmate crews from a san diego correctional facility. We are in a strike Team Configuration with the leader and one other crew and myself and we are doing preparation work in the event the fire does come across tonight. Were prepping the stretchers that way they are usually defendable by engines being able to get up in here and be protected. Reporter they arrived last night and were eager to enter the firefight. Theyre good. Theyre good. We put a lot of effort and hours in getting these guys trained up, coming out in fires and, um, performing what we perform on a daily basis. Reporter calistoga, empty. Everything closed, 5300 people told to get out until we tell you that you can come back and it all depends on what happens up on that mountain. About an hour, hour and a half ago, we did see that big 747 firefighting plane make a left turn over calistoga headed for mount st. Helena. Whether or not it dropped its load or whether or not it was too smoky to see what they were dropping on, is unknown to us at this time. But well find out. Well continue to be here through the evening to update you on whats happening. Im tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. Tom, its just so sad to see that town behind you just like a ghost town. Usually its bustling and a lot of people just Milling Around with activity there. Any people that you talked to today refusing to leave . Im just curious if everybody is heeding the warning to get out or if some people want to stay with their homes. I would say that the odds are very high that some people have remained behind looking at this truck coming that some people have remained behind and that they are in their homes and they are refusing to leave until they think they need to. They can be arrested for that. They would certainly be escorted out of town for that. But um, you know, most people understand that if this fire comes down here, they are in a very vulnerable situation and the roads around here are not the greatest in terms of width and speed and all of that kind of stuff. So i would say that while there are probably some people who stayed behind like hurricanes and tornadoes and everything else, most people heeded the warning because they what the consequences can be based on just what happened in santa rosa. Its so eerie seeing the street abandoned behind you except for a couple of live trucks there. We already have 4500 people throughout the north bay in shelters. Now we have another 5,000 or so evacuating just from calistoga itself. Where in the world are all these people going . Reporter many of them go to see friends, a motel, hotel somewhere far away from here. I have been getting some interesting emails and tweets from folks saying, you know, like one group that has a house a ranch actually in brentwood that has an empty house and plenty of space for stock. She said that she would be willing to entertain the idea of putting somebody up while this is going on because that is the other thing around here is that there are plenty and plenty of horses and cows and things like that and they have to be evacuated, as well. And a lot of horse trailers have come through here. I think my colleague later on in the night will be talking about that. But this is a big problem and you have to move a lot of stuff and the stuff that you cant move is at risk. Like i say, this is an economic engine. This is the economic lifeblood of this town. This street right here. Normally on a night like tonight there would be people partying having a good time and there wouldnt be a parking space to be found. Thats not the case tonight. Here you have police cars and fire vehicles and things like that and nothing else. I do know, tom, that a lot of people for large animals needing to move horses and such, the vallejo fairgrounds, also fairfield and Sonoma County, the horse park, thats a lot of places where people are taking their animals to safety. Its just a lot of miscommunication right now as people wanting to help but just not knowing how to help. Reporter yeah. Its one of these problems where, you know, people knew this was coming and they had a little more warning than obviously the folks in santa rosa but still, it is such a shock to the system. Yesterday and today people are take horses out. And they are spread all over. So its a very difficult proposition and thats just one of many difficult propositions going on here tonight in calistoga. Tom vacar in calistoga the entire city there is on mandatory evacuation, calistoga has about 5,000 people. All of them have been told to get out because of the potential for fire. Tom, thank you. Some dramatic new video is coming from the Sonoma County sheriffs department. [ inaudible ] this shows just how dangerous the conditions are for Law Enforcement and firefighters. This video was taken in the area of franz valley road east of santa rosa this morning. You can see the embers going over the patrol cars. The home is on fire as the deputy drives through. Santa rosa has seen entire neighborhoods reduced to ash. Including the coffee park and Fountain Grove areas. Tonight there are still large areas of the city under mandatory evacuation orders. Mandatory evacuations are in place for geyserville in Sonoma County as crews try to contain the pocket fire. So far at least 7 buildings have been destroyed there. Three of them homes. Geyserville is 20 miles north of santa rosa. Tara moriarty reports from there. They have a fight on their hands. Reporter thats right. They are very happy, though. This fire started on sunday night and they had no resources because of all the other fires. Now that they have the resources they need, they are really starting to put a dent in this fire. We want to show you some video that we took just moments ago of the 747 that came through here and dropped some fire retardant. Everybody was just gathered alongside of the road oooing and aaaing and saying thank you and applauding because this is tough for the residents of geyserville because they have never had air fire of this caliber. We are with evacuees who have come here to the geyserville inn and they are not being allowed back in yet. The big concern is the wind. Gusts are expected up to 50 miles an hour over the next this hours so there is 24 hours. Their houses are to the left. I dont know if you can pan over to where the water drop is. Victoria, where is your house . In front of the plume of smoke. We have about 100 houses in that valley there. And fortunately, everyone seems to be okay. So you know what happened . I mean, were people banging on your door . We had some phone call notification and then i called a few people and some of them were elderly and making sure they were getting up and we did bang on some doors but it was amazing how quickly the Community Rallied and we got a hold of everybody. And we dont have phone trees or anything like that. Our Cell Phone Service became very spotty. So it was a miracle. Reporter alexandra, come on here, too. I know youre standing here with bated breath watching your homes praying that your houses arent burned down. How do you feel now . Looks like they are in the clear. Reporter our area looks so much better now than it did this morning. And the wind just i mean, its in our favor. We can smile. But were worried about our neighbors. We know a lot of people in the hills where they have been dropping the retardant and we think that three homes that were destroyed were people we know. Reporter we know geyserville hasnt experienced Something Like this before. When you look out over there, what do you think . We actually have evacuated a couple of times. Not really left but been prepared to go. So i think all of in the community have done a lot of mentally thinking about how you were going to go getting yourself organized so when the call came were you ready to go. The land is so beautiful with all the vineyards. It tugs at your heart. It does. And you leave thinking, i may not see this again. And youre just heartbroken. But so much more youre worried about peoples lives. Reporter im so glad you could join us and their houses may be spared. When we look out here over the ridge, when we first arrived, the smoke was all the way to the north. It has completely shifted southward and its headed east near the river rock casino. There are mandatory evacuations in place. And it looks like we are just going to have to wait this one out. Crews have told me they are concerned that if the wind shifts direct examination and starts going westward, that they could really have a fight on their hands because thats where all the homes are located. Were live in geyserville, im tara moriarty, back to you. Tara, thank you. Lets bring in our chief meterologist bill martin now. This is just mindboggling. 22 fires, 8 different counties. Yeah. And now we have winds that are going to be kick tonight. How bad do you think it will get . Nothing like sunday night. But its a red flag warning and the winds, you know, at the Higher Elevations could gust to 35 to 40 miles per hour. Thats high. It is. It is. Tara was wondering if the winds would shift west putting more homes in jeopardy there that she was just covering. What are the chances of that . I think she was referring to i think she meant east. So the winds tonight, julie, are supposed to come northerly and easterly. So its coming from the north and the east blowing to the west towards the populated areas. So what happened in calistoga today, im pretty sure when they evacuated that town, the models are showing a north wind. The fire up near st. Helena and in the Rincon Valley area, that would blow north down into that if you have been to calistoga the topography is like a little riverbed. We are not expecting heavy winds like sunday night and not expecting that the compression down below elevations, its going to be above 1,000 feet where the real funneling will occur but sunday night what we saw, the winds were coming right down to the surface with full force. This is not the case. It should not be the case tonight. I have been here a long time. I have never seen an air quality day like this in the bay area. I have never seen this much smoke for this long over such a wide area. Thats a symptom of whats going on 40 miles to the north. So here are the winds right now. We have had high humidities today, lower temperatures, thats good. But as we get Going Forward here, we are going to see the winds tonight somewhere i was telling julie a minute ago somewhere around 2, 3, 4 a. M. The winds will start clocking more northerly which is not a good thing. Thats what was happening on last sunday night but the good thing im seeing now, between the Pressure Gradient is 2. Sunday night it was 20. That gradient is going to go up. Right now its 2. Sunday when we had the big wind it was 20. Just some perspective. Well watch the gradient all night as we push forward. Going up, talking about the hill next to calistoga, what would be your best guest on the winds on the hill tonight and are they going to push the fire toward calistoga . I think they will push the fire toward calistoga but were not going to see well see most of the winds staying up higher on the mountain around 1,000 feet. If that gradient goss 20 millibars, which it wont, but if it goes to 20 millibars, then it pushes down into the ground on into the city creating those funneling winds we saw at coffee park. This tonight does not look at all like that same event. I hope that makes sense. More coming up. Thank you. Coming up here, tragic stories emerging tonight of people unable to escape from the flames. Up next, an update on the missing and important numbers you should to about if your loved one is unaccounted for. Theyve been playing the same playlist for three months and im pretty sure youre not supposed to eat scones for dinner this many days in a row. Mexico, hawaii, costa rica, i dont really know. Im a quick packer. We are learning more tonight about one of the victims who died in the fires in Sonoma County. The family of Cristina Hanson tells us their Worst Nightmare came true last night when they found that cristina did not escape the flames. Her father was rescued and is recovering in the hospital in san francisco. Cristina rendon is there now with more. Reporter frank, julie, Cristina Hansons family is heartbroken. They have spent the last couple of days searching for her calling the shelters, visiting them as well and then word came last night that she died in the fire. Reporter at 27 years old Cristina Hanson was getting ready to celebrate another birthday in november. Her cousins brittany and frank tell us she was full of life a bubbly personality who drew people in. She just touched everyone. Just like always very positive, she was always very social. She loved music. She loved to dance. We have all these pictures from our wedding. She was just getting down on the dance floor. Reporter hanson was born with spina bifida and had been in a wheelchair since birth. She had a lot of challenges during her life and she was always just so very positive. Reporter she attended Spring Hills Community Church in santa rosa and volunteered at primrose an assisted living facility with people with alzheimers and dementia. She knew sign language so she learned that very young and she would help interpret for hearing impaired. Reporter a2008 graduate of cal high, she moved with her family after high school. She lived in an apartment behind her dads main house. The family thinks the fire hit hansons apartment first and that her dad michael tried to save her. He has thirddegree burns on top of his body and one of nine patients at st. Francis Memorial Hospital being treated for the wildfires. He is sedated so they wont know what happened until he wakes up. But authorities confirmed late tuesday that cristina didnt escape. Just really was a nightmare. Um, come true. So, um, right now, i mean, now we have to shift our focus to her dad and make sure that he is okay. Reporter this person only has positive memories of her cousin a woman she will remember as funny, charismatic and loving. I think if she were here right now, she would be worried about everyone in her community and making sure that everyone else that is still out there missing was found. She would want to be at shelters helping and i think we just need to honor her that way and try to live the way that she would be living. [ crying ] reporter hanson will be honored before friday nights Football Game at cal high school, homecoming this friday. The district says they will honor hanson as well as Stacee Etcheber and denise cohen. Those two women died in the las vegas shootings socal high now has three alumna who have died because of recent tragedies all honored before fridays homecoming game in san ramon. Frank, julie . Cristina rendon outside st. Francis hospital in san francisco, thank you. 21 people have now died in the fire. 285 others are still missing in Sonoma County. They have found 300 thought to be missing. Some important numbers now that you may want to know if you are looking for someone or if you need assistance. The Sonoma County missing person hotline number is 707 5653856. For those who need assistance call the Redwood Credit Union at 7075454000. If you would like to provide monetary donations, you can visit any Redwood Credit Union or you can mail checks to this address due to continuing poor air quality and you predictability of the fires and the winds, several schools in the massive fire zone are closing. The superintendent of the fairfieldsuisun Unified School District says all schools will be closed tomorrow and friday. Vallejo city Unified School District will also be closed tomorrow and friday. And this afternoon benicia Unified School District announced that its canceling schools through the rest of the week. We are joined by mark neveau from the fremont fire department, former battalion chief. We have 285 people are still missing. We are now day 3 into this. Thats a lot of people. It is a lot of people. I think whats concerning about that is whether its one or 285, thats tragic. You know, we try to put a priority on rescue finding people. The concern is the prognosis is not good right now. But internet and Cell Phone Service are spotty. Cell sites have come back up. They said about 77 were down and now we are up 54 so thats good so theres Communications Going on safe and well with the American Red Cross is a website people can go to. But there is some concern that that many people are missing. What would be their Strategic Plan . I know they are going to be doing detective work to reach out through cell phones, through facebook and social media. Do they go back to the homes to go through whats left . Absolutely. We heard today in the press conference they are bringing in more chp officers, the National Guard, Police Officers are coming from all over the state outside of the state. Its going to be security of those neighborhoods but they are also going to be going door to door checking residents. Lets talk about the fires. 22 fires burning right now in eight counties. Most of them have almost zero containment. We heard cal fire say late this afternoon that the situation is going to get worse before it gets better. I was listening to cal fire talking earlier today, too. They said fires are burning so fast, we just cant keep up with them. The fire lines are so long. The terrain is rough. Fires are spotty. Now we have these winds that are coming in tonight. Whats the worst Case Scenario . You know, how do you predict a worstCase Scenario . What they are thinking about, what is that . Now we know that, we are going to work backwards and figure out our resources and put the resources into the areas of high value and loss of life. Thats what were hearing when they talk about where they are putting staffing. We were hearing about all these separate fires but they are concerned that they could merge into one massive fire. Would that what would that mean then for the firefight . Reporter in some cases thats not always bad. Because if they are smaller fires and they burn into the larger, now were talking about larger perimeters and we can deal with that. If its a smaller fire its not much of a threat, thats okay. It might not be bad. Sometimes we use fire to fight fire, like backfires. There may be some good news to that. The concern becomes that the fire behavior starts to become unstable because of the red flag warning. And we are seeing some of this now. Are we looking at these fires burning for days, weeks or perhaps even longer . I think what we heard today was this is going to get worse before it gets better. To be able to predict how long . I think youre going to see fires burning for months. Now, whether its the critical phase, thats a difficult subject. Are they threatening something . Maybe they are burning slowly. The critical part is to get through the areas that are threatened. Well let you continue to listen to our newscast as it goes on. We appreciate your input. Well be back with you later on. Mark, thank you. Coming up next, California National guard stepping up to help in the firefight. We take you to the skies to tour the area with them as they survey the incredible damage. Look at these pictures. [ music ] vo with thousands of quality preowned vehicles. And exceptional customer service, head t to your neiborhood enterprise car sales and let the people who buy more vehicles than anyone. Flip your thinking about buying your next one. We rode along with a Sonoma County sheriffs deputy this morning to get a closer look at some of the devastation in santa rosa. We went through Fountain Grove park which where only a mailbox was Still Standing. He described to us how he helped evacuate guests from the landmark Fountain Grove inn sunday night before it burned to the ground. Later on in the evening, when we could definitely see the fire coming, we i went through with the manager along with a couple of other deputies and we went door to door, making sure nobody was in there. Just knocking on the doors. The fire alarms were going off and it was loud, it was smoky. But we were trying to do the best we could to make sure nobody was in there that was either immobile or unable to get out. The sergeant said the hilton Hotel Next Door was packed with guests when it was evacuated also on sunday night. And it too burned to the ground. Youre watching ktvu fox 2 news at 6 30. The California National guard has mobilized the help in the effort to control these wildfires. And they are calling out even more National Guardsmen as we speak. Ktvus ken wayne is at santa rosa airport. It looks like the Oakland Hills fire, nothing left in some of the areas. Reporter some of those neighborhoods look like the Oakland Hills firestorm did after the fact when everything was wiped out up in Hiller Highlands and all of that above the caldecott tunnel. Same scenario especially in the coffee park neighborhood. They are not going to be able to fly after dark. They are trying to make every last minute of daylight count before they stop and they have to put the planes on the ground because after its dark its just going to be too dangerous for them to fly. We went in a searchandrescue helicopter used by the National Guard and they took us up over the areas of santa rosa that were hard hit by this fire at the coffey park neighborhood. The hilton hotel area. Fountain grove on the east side Northeast Corner of santa rosa. We are flying around 1600 feet. We got a good view of the extent of the damage in santa rosa. Now, well show you this next videotape, this is after we got farther north up past cloverdale and then turned east toward clearlake the south side of clearlake over the geysers. As we started approaching the top end of the napa valley where calistoga is, thats where the smoke just became so thick, so heavy, we had to climb to 7500 feet to stay over it and at that altitude looking down through the smoke, it was impossible to see the damage to structures down below. The smoke was so thick it blanketed all the napa valley under the smoke layer. So we flew over the smoke and we had a view the smoke but not much else. Here at the airport we ran into state senator bill dodds from napa who is also going on an aerial tour and we got his thoughts about what is going on with the firefight in the north bay. The Biggest Issue is the concerns about the red flag warning the wind thats going to be coming up later today and throughout the weekend. Reporter are you satisfied with the response so far . Absolutely. Our First Responders have done a fantastic job. But without them on the ground doing what they had to do the loss of life would have been far greater. Reporter in addition to senator bill dodd from the north bay, we also saw state senator and Senate Pro Tem kevin deleon from los angeles who said, you know, they have been battling that wildfire down there in the anaheim area but they are getting a handle on that one so resources are coming up from there. Resources pull together when Something Like this goes on. This is not a northern versus Southern California issue at all. He said money wont be a concern. Money will not be an issue. They are going to do Everything Possible to get these fires out. We have another tanking taking off in the scene. This plane is going out again. They will keep at it until darkness. The big concern frank and julie is the wind. Frank earlier you asked me about the 747 thats been dropping some loma prieta i got a little more information on that. That plane actually did fly over here. It was a little north of here up in the geyserville area. And it made a big drop. 19,200 gallons of retardant is what it can drop. And it makes one big run like that. Then it headed back to mcclellan. It cant land here at Sonoma County airport because the runway is 6,000 feet long which is good for most planes but a 747 needs more runway and the runway at mcclelland an Old Air Force base is more than 10,000 feet. Thats where it is tonight. Concern, im wondering what the turnaround time ken, im wondering what the turnaround time is for that plane to fill up with gas and to fill up with flame retardant and do they even have enough flame retardant there or are they constantly bringing in new supplies . Reporter well, im sure they are bringing in new supplies because the tanks here just you know, looking at the tanks, it doesnt look like they have enough storage so they must be bringing in new supplies. The turnaround time is fast, five minutes. Really . They come in shut down, fill it up, and they are rolling again. We have seen i cant even count how many planes have come in and out. And often times, its the same ones, i have been looking at the numbers on the sides, they have the big numbers on the tails of the planes. So they are coming in and out. They come in five minutes, theyre out. And its not that far to the fire scene from here. Especially when youre flying, five, 10 minutes on scene, find the target, make the drop, more than one drop if they can, they come right back down here. So they could be in the sky 20, 25 minutes and they are back here getting another load of retardant and back at it. So they could actually fly and make a number of those runs for several hours without having to refuel. So they are just putting in more retardant. Doing an important job. Ken wayne, thank you. Right now, the situation in napa county is once again growing more dangerous for residents there. Yeah. Authorities there have told some neighborhoods to be ready to get out if mandatory evacuation orders are issued. Jesse gary was in napa and has more. Reporter the front lines in napas firefight are at the top of some of the mountaintops but inching towards the bottom. Behind burned brush and vineyards on the mountain, flames lapping at fresh vegetation. A Fire Strike Team from lake county made its way up the road to the 2100 block to keep a fresh eye on this growing problem. Its not just the flames or the smoke or the crackling wood that you hear in the background. Every now and again, youll hear a tree sound like it almost explodes and then fall to the ground. We are literally looking at explosive vegetation. These fires are burning actively during the day and at night when one would expect a fire to subside. Reporter napa city officials along with cal fire held a Community Meeting at Browns Valley Elementary School wednesday afternoon. The goal is to get affected residents ready to evacuate if increasing wind speeds overnight threaten more homes. The concern for tonight for us is the east side of the city limits for the city residents, the brown valley area and the west side where obviously concern, well continue to monitor through the night. Reporter this resident has double the trouble. Her house in escrow in calistoga had to be evacuated and the backup plan could be in harms way. I tried to move everything out of that house today down to here to the napa house that we have and now i dont know if thats going to be safe either. Reporter officials are asking residents to plan for the worst by gathering needed medications, money, documents, and prepare to evacuate for four to seven days. A weeks supply of prescription medication, cash and credit cards ready, have your fuel ready. And make sure you notify your relatives. We have everything packed up with trucks and trailers loaded and, um, hopefully we dont have to, but if we do, were ready to go. Reporter Officials Say not only have an evacuation plan out of your house but also a plan to get out of your neighborhood to a freeway and out of area. 200 residents from calistoga who have been evacuated expected to come here to the crosswalk Community Church that will be full up with evacuees for tonight and maybe for the foreseeable future. In napa, jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news. [ music ] its game time, right . When its game time and the area needs our services, we are here to provide. Coming up, firefighters and Law Enforcement officers are hard at work in the north bay as though wildfires continue to rage out of control. This as the flames have now claimed 21 lives and wiped out entire neighborhoods. And we are going to stay on for extended coverage tonight because of the severity of the wildfires in the north bay. The tubbs fire is threatening several neighborhoods in Sonoma County including the oakmont, glen ellen and Bennett Valley areas. Ktvus ann rubin has the latest on the firefight from the intersection of grange roads and Bennett Valley road just outside of santa rosa. All day fire has been working its way down this hillside in Bennett Valley. We have two moments adjacent to me and these fuels are very, very dry. Reporter on the ground a strike team is in place crews working to scrape away as much fuel as possible. We hope the weather cooperates but right now its getting into the extreme conditions once again. Reporter firefighters say conditions have been good today and this fire above the creek winery has been moving slowly. But later thats expected to change as the winds pick up. We are very aware that well have a 180degree shift in the winds and so thats why its so good right now that this fire is doing what its doing taking out the fuel that would be pushed by higher winds, therefore, its eliminating the problem so that makes us available. Reporter while the crews have made a fire this side can be daunting they are focusing on one hillside at a time. Many of them asking to keep going even when their shifts are done. Its game time, right . When its game time, and the area needs our services, we are here to provide. Yeah. I have to put the leash on him and get them the rest when they can. Crews will keep an eye on wind speed and direction overnight. They are hoping it doesnt make an already bad situation even worse. Is they are grabbing personal items to check if their homes are Still Standing many finding nothing left fire officials getting everyone out as the winds then started to shift. Well have the details coming up. Thats the concern for the fire zone. A wind advisory, as well. What will it end up being like . Well take a look at the Pressure Gradients the forecast winds and beyond. Well see you back here. Official let people back in in some areas to check. Ktvus rob roth reports on the second evacuation. Reporter they may be residents of santa rosa but they are living in limbo. Dozens of people were planning to take advantage of Police Escorts into the north santa rosa neighborhoods for the First Time Since they evacuated sunday night. They will grab clothes to medications. They didnt have time to take. Five minutes to leave with the grieving at me to leave. I thought i was leaving for a short amount of time. Now i cant get up to my home to find out if its still there. She got out safely with his dog and has no idea if his home is Still Standing. He and dozens of others wont find out about their homes not today. At around noon the wind began to whip up and the escort stopped because of safety. Santa rosa is under threat of wildfires returning. Its frustrating. Animals you love. Reporter one woman already knew her home was destroyed but she was hoping to have a look anyway. Just trying to see it for mental closure and maybe dig through rubble so even if i could find a vase or a ring or something standing even from memories. You know, i guess thats you know, nobody gives you the playbook for how to do this. Can i keep this separate . I dont want that to break. These people got into the fire zone before the winds came. This is what their home looks like now, gone. I dont have security for him. One of the main things security for your family. Theres nothing i can do to stop this one. Today i found a little thing that my grandmother had given me and its all it was really nothing there. So theres nothing to really get. Reporter authority say they will resume the escort as soon as it is safe. It wont be as severe. Last sunday with heavy winds. That should give us winds instead of 70, 75 miles an hour in some cases. It will give us winds, 25, 35, maybe 40 miles an hour maybe more but Higher Elevations. So what i say its not the same event. North wind comes from the north. And its directly south. Tomorrow will be lessening winds but it starts off pretty breezy in the morning. The strongest winds they are laying down fire breaks because that fire will switch directions.
