Joining us this morning is representative erik smallwell. He got stuck in a little bit of traffic. Glad you made it. First congressman, talk about tax reform. I know President Trump offered up his plan this weekend. Have you seen it and what are your thoughts . I want to work with republicans to simplify the tax code if that means making sure hard working families share in the successes of a company, so from a lower Corporate Tax code that is not just going to the top, but also to make sure that were not getting rid of the estate tax. This effects a small number of families but would be a big giveaway. If this can stimulate growth in places that need it and help working families but if its a giveaway at the top ill oppose it. A brief analysis was done of the bill and the healthiest americans would benefit the most, part includes reducing the Corporate Tax rate and the highest income tax back fret 39 to 35 . It would pay for some of that by getting some popular deductions and people in california are fond of like local and state factors. You can duct your local and state taxes. That would be taken away, so i hope California Republicans join California Democrats to oppose that. The mortgage interest reduction has also been talked about being taken away. I lived in 11 different houses and went to nine different schools. I saw my parents buy a home in this community because of that mortgage Interest Deduction and helps so many families. So much is tied to the wealth of the home they own. You can see that actually being passed as part of this tech bill . Its such a popular deduction. This is where we have to band together with republican ss. We must allow dreamers to stay. If President Trump, ill take him at his word hes going to sign it so that Means Congress should bring it up for a vote. [ please stand by for captioner transition. ]. The russian probe continues although its been back and forth because theres so much going on globally. Whats the status of that . I know social media has something to play in this. We will have an open hearing in october on this issue. You are inviting executives one twitter and facebook and other social media sites to meet with your committee. How confident are you this will not be an issue and the problem we see in the 2018 election . Im worried we are more vulnerable because we have a commanderinchief that does not accept that russia attacked our election. We have disunity in congress and a lack of to find what happened. It shows we are lowering our shield. Right now unity is the best defense. We can make reforms and show our enemies we are united. Lets talk about what happened at the capital. Steve scalise, the congressman from louisiana that was shot during that baseball practice, finally came back in for a good 30 minutes it was special inside the chamber. It was special. We were able to work with the military and state department. He was always working and working with the democrats. What was this moment like . That mustve been special. It was. I think it brought a moment of levity, a moment of humanity to a chamber that has been very divided. You mentioned hurricane relief. Also in the news is the situation in puerto rico. We have been reporting on the president s statements and criticisms of the san juan mayor. Many are saying not enough is being done fast enough. The president is saying we have 10,000 people on the ground. What is the situation . Is the president and the administration right . Is it logistics not allowing them to get the aid to the people . We are not doing enough. Puerto rico took the stranded americans and welcome them before they made it to the mainland. We need to help them as much as they helped others. We knew the storm was coming four days out and it would wipe out puerto rico. We should of made resources then.
