The fire has been burning since about 11 00 last night. Ktvus Cristina Rendon tells us the area is still too dangerous for firefighters to enter. Reporter massive flames lit up the night sky for hours. Plumes of smoke filled the air and firefighters from various agencies worked nonstop to get a handle on this threealarm blaze. By sunrise, it was clear alco iron metal was a total loss. Because of the size of the building, it is could have been burning inside this building for a long time before it was noticed. Reporter vallejo fire battalion cleave Cliff Campbell says the Metal Recycling building covered more than 60,000 square feet, filled with propane tanks, lead batteries, plastics and e waste. He says the smoke is not toxic. Air quality did sampling and deemed it not to be hazardous. Reporter the wind quickly carried out the smoke, but it also took embers with it, starting about 15 small grass fires as far as a quarter of a mile away. This isnt the first time alco iron metal has had a fire. One year ago, their scrap yard lit up behind a building. Campbell says that fire was caused by a machine picking up metal and the heat generated by it caused a spark. There is dust particulates everywhere and it ignited at one time. Reporter firefighters likely wont know the cause until next week. There was a Security Guard company that they hired. They are the ones that said they heard a loud boom and saw the smoke and the fire. That was that was pretty much all they gave us.
