This was in the bayview district, by the way, and hopefully that will be the last rainbow that we see. John, i know were going to plenty of rain. Lets see if we can get a rainbow or 2 of this storm system. Love it. I was spotting all those rainbows under bridges last week and i got excited every time. So it is kind of fun, especially. After youve been looking at views like this all day, which is what most of us are going to be seeing this right here out and at the very top right there you can see it is windy and it is wet. The storm is coming in really just getting things started. As you can see, light showers drifting in more and more across the bay area. But the heavy stuff, all that still to our north and it is going to be pushing in later today. Cold front draped right here across mendocino county. And as that pushes through, winds will pick up as well as rainfall, intensity. Snow in the sierra is going to be a whole nother matter as this massive lowpressure dives deep into the west coast, striking in along with it. Some really cold unsettled air, bringing with it a chance of thunderstorms for the bay in rowlett list. Snowfall in the sierra nevada. The mountains will be off the charts with as much as 5 to 12 feet of snowfall above 5,000 feet in elevation. Includes areas like Donner Summit on i80. It is going to take crews days to be cleaning up this feet of snowfall with those plows. So anticipating snowed in for several days up in the sierra. If youre up there, make sure to bring emergency supplies. Power outages are certainly possible as well. Several days of food. As for our northern neighbors here in the bay area, sonoma and napa county mountains could see 3 to 6 inches of snowfall. So this is low elevation stuff. Its not just the feet of snow in the sierra. That is the concern. Its the 80 to 90 Miles Per Hour wind gusts that we have that are prompting blizzard warnings that just went into effect moments ago, lasting through 10 00am on sunday with those strong winds, risk of Power Outages and that compounded with being snowed in, not an ideal situation for being in the mountains. So this is very hazardous weather. If you are not in the mountains right now and had plans on going up there, just dont do it. Not a smart idea right now. It doesnt matter if you have chains or a truck thats done it before. We do have blizzard conditions today through saturday snow level falling as low as 1500 feet well down into the sierra foothills. And of course, that feet upon feet of snow higher up for the bay area. Its the rain for us. We do have that round of thunderstorms likely moving through later on into the afternoon. Very unsettled weather. So well have pockets of heavier rain, potential for hail, strong winds as well as cloud to ground lightning. This continues overnight tonight and into tomorrow as well with friday, bringing pockets of heavy rain, interspersed by lighter showers all through the day friday and into saturday as well. So weve definitely got several days of wet weather for us. The good news is the ground is dry back out. So will absorb fairly quickly. A quarter to a half an inch of rainfall today, several inches over the next few days. Any excess will drain off into our rivers. Rivers and streams have also seen water levels dropping. So this means that they have the availability pull up a little bit without necessarily overflowing. So our flood risk is fairly minimal. Fortunately, we do have high surf advisories at the coast starting tomorrow, 15 to 20 foot breaking waves that the coast strong winds to 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour that risk of downed trees is certainly a possibility. Todays daytime highs will land in the upper 50s to low 60s. Were honestly pretty much already there. As for the next several days, we get colder as that cold front barrels in friday saturday and sunday will barely make the low 50s along with heavy rain in the bay that heavy mountain snow in the sierra. Back to you, james. All right. Thank you very much on. Well, lets talk more about that major snowstorm in this year. Its already causing. Major delays on the roads. Its anticipated to be the most significant storm. The sierra has seen this season and were already getting a quick glimpse of it. We want to go ahead and take out to some video to show you some of the conditions we are seeing already this morning. Take a look at those wind conditions. You can see these flags are wavering in the wind back and forth. Fervently just goes to show you how significant already the wind gusts for today. But again, we have a lot of snow thats already coming down. This storm is expected to get pretty impactful later tonight. But again, already seeing the brunt of it this morning and here at boreal ski resort. Were already seeing people who still want to take on the slopes boreal ski resort has also mentioned to us that theres a wind hold on some of their chair lifts. They also mention that there is a possibility Power Outages could happen. So they have some backup generators in the event that happens. But they want everyone to stay safe on our roads. And with that, were already seeing a highway closure for today. Take a look at this. I80 worst watching us. Traffic is getting diverted at king veil. Thats because of a big rig that overturned on that highway blocking all lanes the National Weather service has come out with some pretty Strong Language about todays storm. Theyre anticipating travel to be extremely difficult to impossible. So just goes to show you how bad the storm is expected to be reporting from boreal ski resort. Im its tough. Onion. It is 10, 30 welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news at the half hour. Lets get a check of that forecast. Weve been talking about it all week. John. The storms come in. The storms are coming in todays the day. Here it is. Yet yesterday was super super nice. Today is just the introduction to. Another couple of days that are going to be very stormy, especially for the sierra. This is where were at san jose. The clouds have been darkening gradually the past few moments here we are starting to see showers pushing in more and more into the bay area. As you can see, we from the Santa Cruz Mountains up the coast into the north bay, all just an introduction because look at what weve got to our north, that really heavy rainfall in our cold front draped across the region right here has yet to even push in. And that will result in heavy afternoon showers and along with the chance of thunderstorms, speckled cloud cover offshore cellular clouds right there. A sign of unsettled and cold air. So a chance of thunderstorms and a much colder forecast ahead of us. This allowed snowfall the fall ever decreasing elevations in the sierra. Once you head above 5,000 feet, snow will pile up between 5 to 12 feet. That includes routes like i80 and highway 50 up there. At lake level, expect as much as 4 to 8 feet of snowfall at lake tahoe. This is going to result in extremely dangerous travel conditions. Honestly, impossible travel conditions. I dont care how experienced you are. It is not a forecast to be heading up there. It is going to take several days to plow off these roads. Theres going to be multiple closures over the next several days with the most intense snowfall friday through saturday and snow level dropping to as low as 1500 feet as this cold air settles in. That means some snow on top of a mountain peaks in the bay too. As of today, this is our warmest that were going to be the next few days. Upper 50s right now for your current temperatures and were going to land in the upper 50s to low 60s this afternoon. Back there getting some rainfall already seeing multiple delays that after sfo. So its already having its impact and its only increasing as we make our way into the afternoon. James. All right, john, thank 10 31 is the time and happening right now. A blizzard warning as johns been mentioning in effect right now for the tahoe area. He says if you havent headed up there, you dont. In fact, a lot of the National Weather service is saying the roads are going to be impassable and they dont use that term lightly. Crawfords Michael Thomas live for us with more on what we need to know. Michael. Yeah, good morning, everyone. And as you heard john earlier, he doesnt care how experienced you are. Its really not an area you should be driving. That is in full effect this morning. In fact, weve got a live look right now of the Donner Summit. Can you can see its near 80, just how its already starting to build up that fresh powder. Thats soon going to be several feet. And as james mentioned, starting at 10 oclock this morning, just a few 34 minutes ago or so fully in effect, is that whether blizzard warning issued from the reno area all the way 300 miles stretch. Its going to be from sierra from north of lake tahoe, down to south of Yosemite Park and the area said to have widespread blowing snow that will create blizzardlike and whiteout conditions causing travel to be dangerous and severely severely bad meaning you cant even see in front of you buy a few feet. Now experts say they do expect 2 to 4 feet of snow in towns. A longtime host shore with 5 to 10 feet that areas highest elevations and wind gusting around 100 Miles Per Hour pg and e and pacific gas excuse me say that crews are on standby as they do. Expect disruptions to happen throughout the weekend. And they want to remind people to be safe. Use caution and never touch those downed power lines. We did speak with our meteorologist john trouble this morning. Take a listen to what he had to say. If you do have plans in that area this weekend. So you have plans of getting to the sierra. It is time to cancel those to reconsider. If you are going to be in this year already fully plan on being snowed in for multiple days. Have those go bags ready . Multiple days worth of food. It is very important to be ready to not be able to move what you get up there. And again, that started the warning at 10 oclock this morning and its lasting all throughout the weekend into sunday. So you really do want to make sure youre being safe, canceling those plans. And if you arent already up there, make sure youre doing your best to stay inside. James, all send it back to okay, michael, thank you very much. 10 34 the time in related news. The department of Water Resources is going to be conducting its 3rd snow survey of the season. And this morning we have an exclusive new inside california politics and Emerson College poll which shows the race for californias open u. S. Senate seat is extremely close for the number 2 position. Capitol correspondent Eytan Wallace takes a look. Well, here we go. Its the sprint to the finish. Remember in this u. S. Senate race, its not just about whos in first, but also that all important. Democrat adam schiff, thank you, everybody. Republican steve garvey. And democrat katie porter. Youre looking at the 3 leading candidates in the race for californias open u. S. Senate seat. That is according to this new inside california politics. Emerson college poll showing ship in the lead with 28 and garvey in second with 20 in 3rd place. But within the margin of error in reach of second places. Porter with 17 democrat barbara lee rounds out the top 4 at 8 . While all other candidates pulled the 2 or lower. I think the main takeaway here is that shift is likely to take that number one spot. But that second place that is up for matt taglia helped to organize and conduct a poll. He says its important to remember this race is part of the states top 2 primary system, meaning the top 2 vote getters will advance to compete in the november general election all the more. So i tag we know its much of the attention is now on porter and garvey as they do it out for runnerup. We see a real tightening per second place. So i think thats thats the headline here. He also says something to watch closely is this 17 of voters say they are still undecided. When asked who theyre leaning toward 19 of the undecided point to barb early with shift and porter just behind it. But even if you factor that in the poll finds ship would still be in the lead with garvey importer behind him. As for lee, without that baseline of supports, it might just be too little too late in the race for the white house. The poll found a joe biden and donald trump will easily win their respective primaries in california. A state where voters say their top issues include the economy, housing, affordability and as for governor Gavin Newsoms ballot measure known as proposition won, the poll found its likely to pass the proposal asks voters to approve a 6. 3, 8 billion dollar bond to fund more than 11,000 Behavioral Health beds. And 27,000 treatment unit statewide for people experiencing Substance Use disorders. And Mental Illness for the poor results. 69 of voters say they will vote yes, seeing support close to 70 . Suggest that there is still widespread concern among californians that were not doing enough to take on this issue. And the poll found governor newsoms Approval Rating stands at 49 while his disApproval Rating stands at 39 . That is significant. Lots to talk about both here around the bay and up in the sierra john. Yes, the sea air is really going to be seeing the heaviest snowfall that its seen all season long and that is prompting all agencies to say just dont do it and completely agree. Heres lake tahoe right here. This is a look before its right now. But we are seeing that rain and snow mix moving in. Temperatures are going to drop and at lake level these next several days, 4 to 8 feet of snowfall are dissipated to be falling. This is just the start of all of it. We have showers here in the bay area really picking up for us, although the heaviest of it, theres your cold front right there. Going to be scooting in along that line that moves through into the early afternoon today. Low pressure area anchoring this big dip in the jet stream in a much colder air mass that plunges in along with it. This is going to allow snowfall to fall at increasingly lower elevations. And that means no all the way down to 1500 feet down into the sierra foothills. Going to be a lot of it, too. Once you head above 5,000 feet in elevation, you can expect snow to pile up anywhere between 5 to 12 feet. That includes Donner Summit right along i80 and that is going to take several days for crews with those clouds to be clearing out. So roadways will be impassable for the next several days. If you have friends that are up there, make sure that theyre stocked up on everything they need emergency supplies as well as several days of food for the bay area. 3 to 6 inches of snow in the mountains above sonoma and napa, mendocino and lake counties and even a dusting up on mount diablo in mission peak expected as we move, especially into saturday morning. Its not just the feet of snowfall in the sierra, but the strong winds 80 to 90 Miles Per Hour gust is prompting blizzard warnings taking effect this morning and lasting through sunday morning. This is going to result in likely some Power Outages up there, too. So this is a dangerous situation for travel and make sure that if you have family up there to have them ready to go to be snowed in for several days. As i mentioned, snow level will continue to fall down in elevations, especially low on friday night and saturday morning, dangerous travel conditions, not just dangerous, honestly, impossible driving conditions heading up there into tomorrow. We will see future cast showing continued showers for the bay heavy line of showers pushes through this afternoon along a cold front boundary winds picking up around that time, too. We could be seeing cloud to ground lightning. Small hail, heavy downpours and just strong winds along with it all the way through the evening tonight and into tomorrow as well. Pockets of heavy rain and unsettled weather continue through friday and into saturday for us. Little good news for the bay is our ground is dry back out. Thats going to absorb a lot of this rainfall. Flooding risk is fairly minimal these next few days, anywhere between a quarter to a half an inch of rain. Today, were going to add several inches on top of that tomorrow and saturday and even more into next week, too. As for the coastline, we will have high surf advisories taking effect tomorrow, 15 to 20 foot. Surf at the coast. And we do have future cast of when showing 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour gusts for us as we move into the afternoon as that cold front does arrive. Temperatures today already peaking before the cold front arrives. Upper 50s to low 60s into the afternoon. Youre actually going to see temperatures decreasing because that cooler air makes its way and by friday, saturday and sunday, were barely lake making the low 50s at our warmest mountain snowfall continues very heavy through saturday with areas of rainfall likely through sunday, james. All right. Thank you, john. 10. 47 is the time. Lets take a break from talking about the rain. Lets talk about the moon. The u. S. As we know is planning to send humans back to the moon. And victor glover, who has a storied career of self will be the first person of color on the lunar surface. It doesnt matter if youre a first theres no second thursday force.
