This about what is going on in the middle east. Joining us now is nicole ybarra. Shes the director of Mental Health at the redwood city. And mateo Kaiser Health centers thank you so much for joining us to kind of help us handle and figure out how to have these conversations. I was speaking with my mother earlier. I know she and many people have turned to prayer to try and understand or at least feel as though theyre doing something to help those overseas. But im curious when it comes to having conversations with kids. Is there an age range where its more important for the parents to engage in the conversation . First or do you wait for your kid to ask you questions . How do you even begin that conversation . Yeah, i think you know whats really important first is to really just kind of go with and really validate your emotions and experience because we as human beings as parents, its really heart for for all of a stray. And our kiddos are constantly watching as models to see. How are we process thing . Our emotions. How are handling are stressed party handling are things in this world and thats really important that they see that we are actually able to have difficult conversations. I think as parents, caregivers, we tend to really want to protect our children deserve that. But in a sense. But, you know, i think in the long we can really help our with anxiety and kind of reducing that an increasing sense of safety. If we are able to lean into those tough conversations and the very age appropriate way, someone suggested that i have is for starting the conversation being just really curious about what it is that they already know, right . They might be having conversations at school with their peers, their chances that theyve potentially seen videos online. So first, just being really curious about what it is that they have already heard and let me know. I also suggest asking open ended questions saying how they how theyre feeling asking them hearing the staff. How are you feeling . How is impacting you and really being able to sit and hold that emotional space for them. Its critically important. Also age appropriate way. I think it is ok to get them. Fact, i would try to avoid some of the detail if possible, but really giving some facts about what it is that is going on in this world. And then again tracking with them and checking to see how thats impacting their body, their minds kind of in that moment. Its really important. You know, different kids develop different ages. So its hard to give an exact age, i think, rather than selecting agents really important is to find out what it is that they already know and find out what their tough questions are and being able to answer those questions in a way that helps connect them, you know, to a sense of safety and helping them identify people in their lives provide safety for whether that other adult school, other people in your family are in the community let them know that theres a lot of people in this world that really care about them staying safe. I will make this super personal i have 2 young kids about to turn 79 their jewish that we havent. I dont know if they know about we havent talked about it. Ive been in denial, basically not wanting to have a calm sort go there because they seem so young to me. But by the same token, you know, i know the kids talk at school and some kids probably, you know, the 5th graders probably know if their Elementary School so what would your advice be to a parent like me who . Doesnt know if their kids know you still try to ask those soft probing questions that you alluded to. Are you just kind of wait in that case . Yeah, i would say, you know, starting off just saying how was your day . How school what are you learning . What are you guys talking about . Pass from . Are you guys talking about any important events that are happening in the world to see if its coming out . And not everything at the age of 9, 7, because i myself actually have 8 yearold and a 6 yearold and they have not it up to me at. We are also jewish. So its its getting very personal side really can connect to what youre going i myself have not it up with them they happened. But theres been another really tough offense in the that they have been really privy you know, for example, we live and half moon on the active shooter incident was happening. We look very close and they knew you know what was happening. My daughter was lining but the door with toy cars to try to protect our house. So we have to have some really tough conversations. But i do suggest that the agent, you know, if your kids in a kind of waiting to see what they bring to you and things really curious about what theyve heard before you go there are there any things to maybe avoid saying or any words that may cause more distress than help . Because i feel like that can also, you cause a kid to be a little bit more worried or scared that something may happen to them. Are there any that trigger words that parents should maybe avoid . I would avoid more up the details of, you know whats happening to people, kidnapping, rape kids get really scared. I think you know, getting separated from their caregivers. So i would employed. Youre talking about kidnapping, talking about getting take. Talking about being separated from people about you know, reminding each day whos picking you up . You know, your schedules might change with different afterschool activities. So just reminding them of who to expect. And at what time, i think its really important. And then you have older ive seen things online where, you know, there have been these warnings going out or or suggestions to have kids have phones to a social media to like delete all their tiktok apps and instagram apps because the videos are so barbaric and horrifying that even if youre older kid, a i dont know 15, whatever. Yeah, it could obviously still really, really. Mess you up for a lack her eloquent way to put that. Would you suggest for older kids . You know, i think its an opportunity to teach them about containment. Im, you know, get curious about images that theyve already seen them. How did that impact you . What did you feel . Did you notice your heart rate increasing . Did you notice that you started to feel really nervous and scared . And, you know, kids oftentimes they want to do the offset specially teenagers. What we want them to do. So rather than just saying, you know, i forget you from your social media for the next week. I would really say, hey, you know, told when you saw that you felt sick, but you felt scared. Im wondering it might be good and healthy for us to take a break. Right . Like its really healthy. A lot of the times for us to have a lot of things i think its really good selfawareness to know when we need to break, whether its from a relationship in our lives, whether its from doing something thats no longer bring us joy and kind of inviting them to be a part of the solution kind of come up with their own ideas around what may help them feel are safe in terms of like social media restrictions. The last thing that i did want to ask about is terms of bullying, obviously none of the fighting devastation is happening here at home. But here at home, thats where discrimination can arise at school. If you know, students know that their fellow classmate is jewish or palestinian. You know, there there are potentials for bullying. How can you make sure you have a kid that is not engaging in that type of behavior towards other students . Absolutely. I mean, i do think the schools are doing such a better job. You know, when i was growing up in terms of talking about diversity, equity inclusion, you know, different says embracing those differences. I think having those conversations at the dinner table right now more than ever is completely critical. Talking about, you know, how we all come in different shapes and sizes and colors and bracing that freezing mark years different from think its really important andrwe can also incorporate into religion into that conversation as well. I think if you have any concerns, you know, go to your kids teacher, you know, request to have a conversation with them. Think its also ok to to ask your kids, teachers, you what are you guys talking about a costume so that i know i can be prepared home to support our and also ask that, you know what you mind having a conversation, you know, right now about, you know, bracing differences. You know, the holidays are coming up talking about different ways that, you know, different families celebrate holidays or do not celebrate families, i think would be a good suggestion as well. Well, were going leave it there because of time. The cold borrow with kaiser. Really appreciate your perspective. Obviously, youre an expert. I think a lot of that probably made a lot of sense to people and certainly we can use a little bit of reason and calm and your expertise in these times. So thanks for your time. Thank you so much. Appreciate thank you. Other news this evening that were following a new law could hold social Media Companies liable for contributing to child trafficking.
