And as that smoke clears in some areas, the damage left behind by this fire can finally be assessed and that damage is significant with the Historic Town of la hina reduced to ashes by this fire. So far the death toll has grown to. 36 people, though it is expected to rise as fire crews are now able to search areas that were at first hard to reach because of the flames. The fire has also destroyed about 300 buildings, including that 150 yearold banyan tree. The locals often use for community gathering. Some was also a popular tourist attraction at this hour. The fire is still active and crews are still fighting an uphill battle to try and slow the flames just a short time ago, President Biden announced that fema officials are on the ground. And if you look behind me there, thats oakland estuary the water and they see that black tower over there. The fire was burning just to the east of that tower at the moment. Im actually up wind from location over there. So i cant smell anything. Cant see any smoke either. Looks like theyve got a pretty good handle on this fire. But as you mentioned, there is still an air quality advisory in place for the east bay. The Oakland Fire Department has been there throughout the day on thursday. Spring water. On to this fire, theyre using a big crane to kind of mix it up, looking for any hot spots as well. Of course, this fire started around 5. 30, wednesday afternoon with the Oakland Fire Department responding here to shun its or steal. This is a scrap Metal Recycling facility. They fought this fire for hours well into thursday morning, the bay area air Quality Management district also put out an air quality advisory on thursday saying that folks might be sensitive to smoke or smells, you should stay inside. Avoid this. Even though fires mostly under control, theyre saying there could be some lingering smoking impacts in alameda and contra costa county. Also good news here. Nobody injured by this fire. The fire is not threatening any structures in the area. The exact cause of this blaze. Well, that remains under investigation. And back live now, schnitzer steel says that they arepworking with the east bay municipal utility district to prevent any runoff from the fire from that from the water being sprayed on it, getting into San Francisco bay. So what were expecting as we get into tomorrow is that we have good air quality, right . Were taking a live look from the east bay right now. You can see some blue skies out there looking pretty good. So happy to say that so far. So good not bad. Today. Were getting a little bit in the inner east bay, but thats about where we should be this time of year. Like about 87 88 degrees. You can see about 87 in livermore right now. Were at 81 down in mountain view. Some nice 70s around the bay. 78 in hayward, San Francisco in downtown 66 degrees and up in the north bay, were ranging between the mid 70s right up to the low 80s. You can see 82 there in santa rosa. So the thing thats kind of catching my eye today is what you see down in southern and Central California. Now that thats the remnants of what was a Tropical Storm. Eugene. And that has sent a little bit of moisture into california. And unfortunately, its also sending a little bit of lightning. Were going to be a little more into that come back a little bit later tonight. Well see those clouds increase because of sending some of those clouds our way and even the chance of a sprinkle in the south bay. Very, very small chance. Union Pacific Railroad is fully replacing a section of tracks in san leandro built in the 18 60s kron. 4 sweet ago reports the city is also making safety improvements for cars and pedestrians in an area that has become dangerous. And thats whats been sending that wind that very gusty wind across hawaii, right. High pressure to the north and low pressure in the form of Hurricane Dora to the south. You know, the good news is that hurricane is going to be moving on. The bad news is its not completely moved on yet. So we still have some gusty wind in hawaii and they are still kind of in this whole fight for saving some of the, you know, the islands buildings in peoples homes. You can see right here. 23 miles per hour. Thats gusting right now. Thats not great for firefighting. No doubt about it. Heres Hurricane Dora. Still very powerful right now sitting at a category 3 with sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. Now it is going to continue its track as it moves farther towards the west. And when that does pull away, will help to lessen that gradient by tomorrow. They should be looking at much more calm winds. So some good news there, but we still have to get through today, right . So what a live look right now from our mount tam cam. Its been there all day. The marine layer kind of hanging out and certainly is have influence on our temperatures. Keeping us again in this rather mild pattern that weve been in for the last few days with 60s at the coast, 70s around the bay and 80s, as you move inland tomorrow, were going to see those temperatures get knocked down just a little bit more for our inland valleys. As you can see, were looking out for about 84 degrees and partly cloudy skies and some of that is because of whats happening to the south of us right now. Another tropical system, which was eugene, the remnants of that sending some moisture into southern and now Central California and bringing with it a little bit of lightning. You might have seen a couple popup parade about there and its thats going to be headed our way now. I dont think well get much in the way of rain, but we will get some cloud cover will help to keep us a little bit cooler tomorrow. So you see these temperatures. Some are very similar, but just a few degrees cooler for those of you who are inland. But again, still that pattern, one more day of these mild temperatures of 60s at the coast, 70s around the bay, an 80s inland. We get to saturday. Were going to take those inland temperatures up into the low 90s. Then mid 90s on sunday and then we kind of rocket into near triple digit heat. You can see it last all the way through wednesday. Before we start to get a slight pullback on thursday, that means you got a hot week ahead next week. So just make sure youre keeping that in mind as you make your plans back to you. But everything you see kind of an orange and pink and red, those are all heat watches and warnings. Just to show you that we still have a good part of the country that is dealing with some heat. And were also going to be seeing some of that head our way as we head towards the weekend right now, 106, in dallas, but you can see some nice temperatures in the northeast today. Were about 70 degrees in new york city. Thats not bad, right . 87 in atlanta, 82 in denver and even las vegas. Just 92 degrees. Thats ok for this time of year in las vegas. So certainly a little bit cooler on the west coast this weekend. Were not going to stay there. We are going to see temperatures start to warm up as we head towards the weekend, but not tomorrow. Were going to actually cool down a couple degrees tomorrow and that has everything to do with whats going on here, which is the remnants of Tropical Storm eugene right now bringing some showers into parts of Central California. And you can see that counter clockwise circulation just starting to spin some of those clouds our way. And in fact, we could even see a sprinkle or to make it into the south bay. I think its a very small chance, but it is a chance we can see right now some of the showers going happening in and around san louis obispo. I did see some lightning associated with this earlier today. Im happy to see that that seems to have ramped down. So thats some good news. Bringing it back to the bay. Were picking up the breeze a little bit. Temperatures right now sitting at 62 in San Francisco. 71 in oakland and weve got 80s kind of across the board in the north bay and the south bay. And were going to kind of stay in that space as we get into tomorrow. But then things change and we start to warm up and really will start to feel it on saturday. But inland temperatures set to go into the mid 90s and then above that as we head into next weeks all be back a little bit. Faith leaders gathered last night in sacramento to call for more Affordable Housing. This is at a town hall that was attended by several state lawmakers. They discussed the intensifying housing crisis both in sacramento and across the state. The organizations have been fighting for a package of bills called home is sacred, seeks to protect renters and produce more Affordable Housing were looking at a variety of strategies make sure people can stay in their rental housing. We have a big homeless crisis that were dealing with every day. One of the things that were noticing is people slip into homelessness. At the same time you help people get out of homeless. So as we get people the streets, we all seem to make sure have policies to keep people in their rental house.
