American democracy. The by lies. Buys by the defendant. Targeted at obstructing bedrock function of the u. S. Government. Theyre not taking this white house. Were going to fight like missions process of collecting counting and certifying shall be deemed sufficient declaration. The results of the president ial election. For the 3rd time in history and this year, a former u. S. President is indicted. Donald trump has been charged. He was charged today this time for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 president ial election. Thanks for joining us tonight on kron. 4 news at 8. Im ken wayne. Im catherine heenan. That indictment is 45 pages long. It is the 3rd criminal case brought against the former president as hes seeking reelection. Heres a look at those charges. The indictment is connected to the special counsels investigation into the january 6th insurrection kron 4 washington correspondent Raquel Martin has more on where things go from here. Former President Donald Trump is now facing his 3rd indictment this time relating to his role in the january 6 attack at the capitol. The indictment alleges that the former president knowingly and repeatedly spread lies about the Election Results and 70 states. Another federal grand jury has indicted former President Donald Trump charging Donald J Trump conspiring to defraud the united states. Conspiring to disenfranchise voters. Conspiring and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding. The Justice Department says the investigation led by special counsel jack smith found evidence of crimes committed by trump during the lead up to the january 6 attack at the u. S. Capitol. It was fueled by lies. Lies by the defendant. Targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the u. S. Government. Even before the indictments released trump attack smith and the Justice Department saying the cases are politically motivated to hurt his campaign for a second president ial term. The new indictment is separate from the charges trump faces in a Florida Federal Court for the alleged mishandling of classified documents and a potential indictment in georgia for trumps alleged attempts to overturn the states 2020 Election Results. Special counsel jack smith says the department of justice is seeking a speedy trial. The former president is expected to appear in a Dc Federal Court on thursday. For now in washington, Raquel Martin, back to you. All right. And for more, were joined by east bay congresswoman and Senate Candidate barbara congresswoman, thanks for joining your reaction to this historic occasion of the president. Being indicted again. Well, i say this indictment shows trumps criminality in shocking detail and its one of the most serious and one most consequential once a so far. I i was sitting on the floor that day of Congress Know for a fact took place. It was one of the most horrifying experiences of my life. I saw how close we came to bring our democracy down as it relates to the violence. And i saw people who we you know, people got killed and we barely made it out of the chamber workers were at risk. Employees, members of congress, members of the house and senate, everyone. And so its time and im glad Justice Department is pursuing justice. Finally, in this case. Congresswoman, were getting at least a hint of the defense one trump lawyer, for example, saying, ok, try to prove that he didnt believe he was being cheated out of the election. The suggestion lying is not in itself illegal. What are you watching for are expecting on that front . Well, i think the backs up put forth by the january 6th committee are pretty clear terms his intent. And in terms of come in and the impact of what you eat a trigger. And this was an attempted we saw that the worlds top is take place heard. Former president promote and incite violence. I am pursuing the lawsuit. Several of us are plaintiffs in the lawsuit put forth the naacp holding him accountable and the proud boys or what they did that day. And in fact, that everyones life at risk, they put our democracy at risk. And were pursuing justice through the court system also has a plaintiff in this lawsuit. There are 6 Co Conspirators accused in this indictment. What do you think the chances are any of them might actually flip . To kind of save their own skins from being indicted and charged if they cooperate. But the prosecution in this case . Well, this is a serious case. Well there have been people flipping all along and we dont know until see the Court Proceedings and learn how this is being pursued by the Justice Department. But i would say that i think that they understand the seriousness of this and year they are as coconspirators do they jail time and that is exactly what i hope is the the course the criminal Justice System has to work. Its it has assume everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But i think january 6 committee, first of put appealing and a very clear case to the Justice Department to move with this case. Congresswoman, so far, indictments have seemingly only strengthened trumps hold on the republican party. Im sure you saw the poll today that its early, but dead locked with a joe biden. What would move the needle . What would you say to Republican Voters . Its hard to say because its hard to know whats in their mind when fact, support a violating the i mean that this was an attempted coat against our democracy. And fact, the republicans support donald trump. What the polls say and what theyre showing, what theyre saying to me, dont understand or dont care about our democracy. And so i think were at a critical turning point in this country. But you know what . There are more people who believe in democracy than not. We have to make sure those people, those voters get out and vote because its clear to me that theres large portion of the country who believe that this is ok, go in and out of credit, passion. And theres so many, though, who dont believe that. I want to preserve our democracy and hopefully our loss and will be through the courts and will be another vehicle for the public to understand the terrible criminality that took place on that day terms the attempted the and the attempt to overthrow our democracy. Have you had a chance to talk to any of your republican colleagues today since announcement came out . Because weve been hearing that in private. There are some republicans who will say critical things about donald trump but will not say that publicly in confidence have any members that, you know, probably wouldnt name have said anything at all. Critical. Were seeing this as a good thing that the president has been night. Former president has indicted. I havent talked to any of them today, but believe you me. Ive talked to many of them over the last couple of years and privately, they tell me that they they hang their sometimes insane and just shake it. So there are plenty of republican members of congress who know the real deal, but they dont have the backbone to come forward and push back and say this is ron. You know, we have to fight to protect our democracy donald trump incited violence and hes the perpetrator of what took place on january 6. They will not come forward to say that, but believe they they talk about it privately and they hang their in shame. At least publicly a trump is sending unfazed and taking a toll. I mean, even legal costs eating into his a pac money at this point. Is this taking a big toll on him . Well, hes always ranted and raved than unhinged. If you ask me and i believe he really believes that hes above the law. But hes not above the law. No person is above the law. I dont know what his mental state is now as a result of this indictment. But i think over the years weve and the is in many ways in his own world and and believes truly believes doesnt have comply with the rule of law and he believes that he can do anything, say anything hurt. Anyone and tried to takeover a democracy and create what he wants in terms of an autocracy out of this country. So were very dangerous and people need to understand what up to he is. And think that this is this trial. Are these trials of their 79 take place will show how and is. And and the state of mind that he is and has been for everything. Well, ever since began to follow dot ultra prior to him being elected to the oval right time. Congresswoman, thanks for joining us. And we will follow not only this case, but your case. That the you say you filed against a former president as well and will. Keep following those developments as we move forward. Certainly theres going to be a lot to talk about in the coming weeks and months. Thank you for your time. Congresswoman. Nice being with thank you. Thank you, congresswoman. Well, todays indictment, the 3rd one against the former president hed already made history earlier this year, becoming the first former u. S. President to Face Criminal Charges of 4th indictment to a possible indictment is in the works are dan thorn joins us now here in the studio with a look at the charges against the former president. So far yeah, ken trump keeps breaking his own record at this point with the growing number of criminal indictments as he runs for the white house next year. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and says he is being targeted by democrats trying to keep him from reclaiming the presidency. Former president was first indicted in new york in march on state charges stemming from hush money payments made during the 2016 president ial election. Prosecutors accusing the former president of paying off adult film star Stormy Daniels to bury allegations of extramarital encounters. Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying Business Records and he is set to appear in state court in december 2 months before republicans begin their nominating process. Then in june, special counsel jack smith charge trump in a federal case in florida. This one related to mishandling of classified documents mayor lago, which was also the First Federal case against the former president. A federal judge has scheduled a trial in this case for next may.
