Bay area. Im Vicki Liviakis and im grant lotus but the man we really need to know is our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow because if this weather is going to stick around lawrence tells us going to get that yeah i think its going to get better just going to be slow going this is going to be just slowly. Stay. I think we saw some improvement up above we had some mix in the atmosphere bit. Little more sunshine pop up in spots still some very poor air quality no getting around it that sits there tonight you can see up toward sfo you see the light you see all the smoke down below and as we look toward the Golden Gate Bridge weve got some fog rolling on shore thats good. Unfortunately. It just kind of a thin marine layer so there again nice pressure off the ocean but that is just mixing with some of the smoke out there as well and theyre just so small so much smoke around right now back weve got some very poor air quality in quite rapidly in fact last hour it was all across the bay into San Francisco now it has moved into oakland and alameda up into richmond right now the ports their quality in the bay area, but it is bad just about everywhere you go you see in red here theres a very bad air out there right now and tomorrow doesnt look like an improvement overnight tonight were going to watch kind of settle in and all the valleys the nooks and crannies the topography around the bay area. There you go tomorrow morning we start out with some extremely poor air quality all the way from about Half Moon Bay to san mateo on northward up in the north bay towards santa rosa in guerneville stretching across to the richmond martinez and oakland now this is going to change throughout the day youre going to see those winds pick up and so thats going to move that smoke around first going to see some spots re begins maybe see some clearing and then all of a sudden you see some smoke come in a look at this look at the smoke along the coastline. This is not just fog. Were talking about a smoke cloud that lingers all along the california coastline all the way up in oregon and washington. Weve got a long way to go that offshore wind the other day just brought so much smoke all the way on the middle the pacific so even with the westerly wind that is bringing some that smoke back on shore. All right. We have the winds now but theyve been very light outside so just light breeze is not going to be enough to mix out all the smoke particles. Miles per hour right now to San Francisco only 3 and up in all 3 in the napa that is just not enough we need to 20 plus mile an hour wind to really start to mix the atmosphere and i think slowly but surely will see some changes in this is probably our best hope heres the longrange forecast molly see the swirl off the coastline eventually the system is finally going to break through not the first part of the weekend unfortunately saturday sunday. Youll see some slight improvement. But im not going to be to all middle of next week wont find in the system begins to come on shore in fact bringing some rain up in the Pacific Northwest finally sliding down the coastline and bring some clouds and that onshore push and i think that will be enough specials we get into wednesday and thursday of next week that should be enough to mix out the atmosphere hopefully bring some pressure if we got really lucky, maybe is a little rain. Well that would be great at we needed thank you lawrence, we know one of the People Killed in the north complex wests own fire up in butte county. This is 16 yearold boy the teenagers mom confirmed the death of Josiah Williams the fire once known as the bear fire has scorched more than 70,000 acres in butte county right near paradise which was ravaged in 2018. The fire now 5 contained 9 people total have died there 16 are reported missing. Yesterday the sheriff said 10 people died, but explain tonight that one of the presumed bodies found was actually a model skeleton yesterday, not human bones. Right here the latest containment numbers on the major wildfires burning around the bay area, the lnu lightning complex in the north bay is currently 95 contained more than 360. 3,000 acres have burned there the s c you complex in the east and south bays thats up to 98 containment with nearly 397,000 acres burned and the czu lightning complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties that is 86 contained with more than 86,000 acres burned the woodward fire at the point raze National Seashore in marine county that is now 95 contained that fire has burned more than 4800 acres. Even though the 3 large lightning complex fires burning in the bay area are mostly under control tonight there are still a number of wildfires across the state up and down the state up and down the west coast really you see them all on this and thats really why all the smoke in the bay area has lingered its coming from the north this is a cal fire incident happened. Well they can grand the high fire danger has a lot of people out here really concerned about any sort of reckless behavior, including setting off fireworks or starting any fires, a red flag warning here in the Berkeley Hills expired a few days ago, but if things were to get out of hand it could be devastating. A legal fireworks being shot off and trash is set on fire at a popular East Bay Park residents say this has been happening for several nights at grizzly peak, and im just looking at people and fireworks often staff and and thinking about how reckless and selfish theyre being and its really disappointing and reckless and selfish at the funny says is not only endangering nearby homes and parkland but also the oldest miniature Railroad Club in america. Having my own equipment stored here, theres a lot of important stuff that goes back to a lot of peoples childhoods and i mean were less than a quarter mile from where all this stuff is going on in this place could burn up to the turnout, a grizzly peak are typically popular for sightseeing on a clear day but with wildfire smoke a coating the region. Theres not much else to see the turnouts are supposed to be off limits between 09 00pm and 06 00am but people are still seen at night doing this. A funny would like to see more Police Enforcement to keep a fire from exploding in the hill i dont really be devastating. I mean weve lost over a million acres so far this year and this is a tender box over here we really need people to be careful. Well depending on where you are at grizzly peak, it falls under different jurisdictions for example grizzly peak boulevard is monitored by the chp but those turnouts where the have been happening including people setting off those fireworks. Those are monitored by the U C Berkeley Police department and weve reached out to the department for comment or to see if theres any an investigation into whats been happening out here and as of this report, they have not responded. President trump and Joe Biden Mark the day at Memorial Services in shanksville pennsylvania thats where united flight 93 crashed killing all on board. In that flight was headed to San Francisco when it was hijacked. Earlier in the day biden was at ground 0 where he bumped elbows with Vice President mike pence. 9. 11 memorial events also look different here in the bay area in palo alto firefighters supported the app tossed fire crew in this years annual stair climb, its usually held at Seacliff State Beach but due to the pandemic firefighters and people of all ages participated virtually the Palo Alto Fire Department got together this week for the challenge. Firefighters went up. 110 floors one palo alto firefighter told us the doing this challenge was a way that he honors those who risk their lives on that horrific day. For us is a Service Members now its in the fire service is was very important there there were 343 firefighters that on that day probably knew they were going to make it through that and they still chose to put their gear on and they still chose to charge the tower and thats really why. We just a 110 stared or the 110 floors stair climb is because. 110 floors left out in front of them to take it up to the actual fire floor. Of the first tower being hit and. These guys give their life. Men and women give their life that fearlessly we lost a lot of americans that day. But we also lost a lot of heroes. I think a lot of us there today was kind of cool. We did our stair climb because we have a guy with this said was literally in canada one that was in 5th grade. That are now doing this still say that that day impacted their life and and why theyre doing it. After his fire says to get involved just post a video of yourself on social media doing an activity and use the hashtag ap toss 9. 11 challenge. And our Fire Fighting teams. Tell me they can feel it. We anticipate cooler air and moisture coming in the next few days which is really good news. Oregons Governor Brown also addressed rumors of looting in the fire zones and she says the Oregon National guard is monitoring that situation. Further north in Washington State smoke can be seen from wildfires burning in the eastern part of that state this is video, taken just north of seattle and puget sounds the governor there. Jay inslee says more than 626,000 acres have burned there this week. As we continue to track the Deadly Wildfires in our state will go to oroville where the deadly north complex welcome back a local expert says Climate Change is potentially responsible for the wildfires weve seen over the past several decades, but also human behavior. Kron fours gayle ong has the story. So many of these are ignited by people and by mistake a lot of times you know it does seem like. You know one of the mitigating factors has to be you know better education the eldorado fire burning at least 13,000 acres in the San Bernardino National Forest is one example of a humancaused wildfire ignited after a mishap with a smoke generating device at a gender reveal party during scorching hot temperatures. According to calfire california just getting into peak season already burning close to 2. 3 million acres a new record we spoke to Patrick Brown a meteorology and Climate Science professor at san jose State University of the modeling thats been done on this has suggested that. Climate change influence has potentially as large as half of the day in responsible for half of the increase in area burned that weve seen over the past several decades service around says another factor is more people moving to the state in the wildland interface areas historically prone to wildfires firefighters and local say the czu complex fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains was the most destructive theyve seen in at least a decade, the complex fires in the bay area caused by lightning in mid august, mix with the hot dry windy conditions grew significantly in size. Taking up the top 4 largest complex fires in california history all are almost fully contained but fire season usually begins in october. Experts project it will only get worse over the next decades, but professor brown had this suggestion about what needs to be done now if were worried about fires here in california it has to be more kind of a land managements. You know dealing with that ignitions from people governor Gavin Newsome addressing the need to speed up environmental goals friday after touring the devastation in butte county where the north complex fire is threatening the burn scars of the deadly camp fire of 2018 this is a climate dam emergency. This is real. That was gail ong reporting for us tonight. Some breaking news just multicar crash is affecting traffic on the bay bridge. This is video from the citizen app you can see. No word on injuries or how long it might take to clear the whole scene but of course will monitor that situation and bring you any new developments but traffic on 80 eastbound tonight. Im back to the wildfires. The lnu lightning complex fire that is now 95 contained after killing 5 people destroying nearly 1500 structures and charring more than 363. 1000 acres people who have homes to return to have largely done so and businesses an hour. Getting back up on their feet but there remain. There remains a lot of uncertainty, especially for wineries outdoor tastings have started again it fossil aqua in healdsburg that winery like many in the Dry Creek Valley had evacuate and they were closed for several weeks when the walbridge fire was burning within just a half mile of the property. Were only in august the 1st part of september so well see what the rest of the year hold. The timing of the walbridge really the harvest. Had yet started and there are still grapes on the vine now they are having to test the grapes and rejects the ones that have had a lot of smoke infiltrate them stay called smoke content but they still think there will be plenty of quality grapes to harvest. Fortunately. Our wildfire coverage continues tonight with the deadly north complex fire burning in butte county yuba county and Plumas County you know the north complex fire has killed at least 10 people including a 16 yearold boy. Kay recede has the latest now from oroville. As the smoke and flames from the north complex continue to make their way through butte plume us and yuba counties, driving more and more families out the search and rescue team of the Butte County Sheriffs Office are heading in and the hopes of finding the many who remain missing and theyre theyre literally putting themselves in extreme has some of the areas that they were evacuating. Were just minutes away from being overrun by fire. Dennis schmidt is a member of the all volunteer organization. He says theyre all volunteer staff have faced some of the most challenging terrain in this wildfire. The biggest challenge is it just happened so it comes in and it starts out being something you think is going to be very small and it just keeps snowballing and getting bigger and bigger and you almost instantly run out of resources, you cant get enough people in the right place at the right time sheets as a number of volunteer use their Vacation Time to search the most dire locations and theyre in need of more protective equipment we do everything as volunteers were not paid for the time that were out there we do it because we love helping people and certainly days like today in weeks like this week are when we get to really get that opportunity to help people in a big way as fire crews put out the flames search crews who have lived through some of the most heartbreaking wildfires in californias history are prepared to look through whats left and hopefully find answers for anxious families like deja vu from the camp fire most of on a team. Were here for the camp fire. And many of us are in our professional capacities are still trying to recover from the from the camp fire. That was kay recede reporting for us tonight from oroville concerned that the air quality may be too harmful for visitors. The Golden Gate Park system is announcing closures today in depending on conditions may remain closed tomorrow near woods alcatraz Fort Point National Historic Site theyre all closed to the public. The park system also added what we have heard from Health Experts over the last few days at the current air quality may pose a risk to anyone spending an extended amount of Time Outdoors today and suggest people avoid unnecessary outdoor activity. Today oakland open 2 locations for people seeking relief from the unhealthy air. The spots open today they will be open tomorrow as well unclear. If theyre going to need them sunday. Because of the bad air the citys telling people look try to move any physical activities you had scheduled indoors. Cant do that may be rescheduled them or at least keep it short for information on Respite Centers and the air quality in the bay area you can always head to our website kron 4 dot com. Weve got a lot of smoke in our skies still the question is will it start to clear out over the weekend. Well talk about that forecast coming up next and San Jose Police released new body camera video of the tense confrontation that took place. During protests following the death of george floyd we have details ahead and next in sports. The as facing the rangers a slugfest in arlington we saw the cloud of se and my heart fell. I knew wed lose our home. And we did. Over 24,000 homes have been destroyed by wildfires in the past few years. Wildfire victims need help so im voting yes on 19. It limits property taxes on wildfire victims so families can move to a replacement home without a tax penalty. You never know what youll be faced with. Please, vote yes on 19. The a 6 and a half games up in the nl west, theyre playing great ball looking to increase that lead even more bob melvin company in Arlington Texas masking up taking on the rangers i guess thats good in fourgame set top of the first no score bases loaded at all city. And when you have people on base sometimes a baseball they say ducks on the pond, there were 3 guys on he hit a homerun thats a grand slam and the as take an early 4 nothing lead. Then in the second days up by 3, but sean murphy muscles at the deep center. 464 feet later, oakland extends the lead in the aces role they are redhot theyll play the rangers tomorrow in a double header game one tomorrow afternoon and the as have the second best record in all of baseball. As we mentioned earlier tonight the giants the as dealt with this. Recently but now the giants are scheduled to play the padres in san diego they are not playing and i got to play tomorrow. Either we dont know about sunday but they announced that someone in the Giants Organization has tested positive for covid you see every nobody really knew what was going on this is often how this thing works that the teams learn the players and the manager they they learned late that yeah we got a call from a Major League Baseball in new york. Theres theres a problem with the testing. We dont know that the player or a manager someone higher up in the organization they dont say they just say someone within the giants has tested positive so the plays like uh ok i guess we got to go back to the hotel and i couldnt even go to the clubhouse they did get back to the hotel with their uniforms still on a bizarre situation and thats where we are here in 2020 mlb says it will provide further. Details and updates involving where this series goes from here. We are less than 48 hours away from football. Yeah, theyre going to go with football and they have the niners here looking to get back to the super bowl win it this time will be taken on a high powered offense in the Cardinals Division rivals that you gotta figure with the the Arizona Cardinals on the upswing the cardinals. Lost both times they played the fortyniners last year but arizona getting some trouble it wasnt easy and now the cards have a revamped roster led of course by secondyear hotshot quarterback kyler mary hes going to be good. We think everybody thinks and he now has one of the best Wide Receivers in the league they got the Andrea Hopkins in a trade head coach for the 9 ers Kyle Shanahan knows that despite the 2 wins they got against the cards last season you cant underestimate them at all and hes trying to stress the importance to his players have executing i know the excitement there another guys be ready to go. But you cant lose track of thinking thats all that you got to worry about you got to be locked and theres a lot assignments that you got to do to execute the stuff and both teams are plan really hard which i fully expect. The team that executes federal in their big 3 i to the nba playoffs now in the bubble celticsraptors game 7 of the eastern conference semifinals of course the winner here moves on the losers done close throughout here. 4th quarter celtics leading by 7 jason tatum right to the rack 29 for him the best player in the series under 2 minutes ago celtics up 6 kyle lowry the philly guy is so tough raptors back within 4 there. But this year would be the defining moment in the game celtics up to norman pow. It gets its stuffed by marcus smart who is an Alldefensive Team guy what a block that maybe save the game and the season for the celtics get sees outlast the raptors the defending champs 90 to 87, the final is asked to take on the miami heat in the Eastern Conference Finals but also by the way the Denver Nuggets forced a game 6 beating the well this is an air quality map you can see much of the bay area including San Francisco, the east bay peninsula and north bay, those are in the the bad purple range each dot. Also shows a number it indicating just how foul the air quality really is gross map, but what does it mean if you have to be outside for a certain period of time could force theresa stasi looked into that. It looks bad and it is bad and not only vat the San Francisco bay area has had such a horrible conditions for so many days. Its shattering records. The numbers that were seeing are based on that bpa is air quality index which is kind of like a air quality thermometer telling us how bad air quality is it goes from 0 to 500 and its color coded anything under 100 is below the federal Health Standard but about 100 to one 50s orange, which means unhealthy for sensitive groups children elderly people like that. One 15 above his red thats pretty unhealthy for everybody, not a good idea to be outside exercising outside much at all when it gets above 200 in the purple category that is when its really good idea for everybody to stay indoors as much as possible. Aaron richardson, the spokesperson for the bay area air quality district adds that the dingy dangerous air has dragged on, and now setting new records that no one. Wants to say yeah, this is really got an unprecedented period of. The year alert through 20 days in running the previous record for security or alerts in a row in the bay area was 14 back in the camp fire in 2018. So we doubled or previous im actually worried about everybody. Right now doctor john bombs is with you see berkeleys environmental how science and school of Public Health. He says studies show prolonged exposure to toxic air can have lasting and negative impacts on our health. And increase our chances of getting covid because whilst our smoke increases the risk for lower respiratory tract infections. And given that were in the middle of a pandemic i worry about. The wildfire smoke increasing the risk of covid19. So a few days of wildfire smoke might not be that much of her increase risk but given this is now the 26th day in a row of bad air. I worry that the exposure to this bear is increasing the risk of covid19. Again the Health Experts say that their best line of defense is to use an n 95 and that the cloth coverings are not very good because the particulate matter is so small it can go into that clock and stay there and you can actually inhale acts and thats very dangerous they also gives this advice until the numbers go down it is best to stay inside use an air purifier if you can find one and if you have air conditioning make sure that its circulating inside the house and not drawing from the outside in. In marin county theresa kron 4 news. Well it was almost like the pandemic was moderately bearable before all the smoke in the air but i dont know what im going to do with my kids inside all weekend. And vicki any suggestions inside your house. Head of the Campaign Said like will be just having a great time there the event is that oh yeah thats those are great. Have spoken to news outside youre going want to stay inside if you can it is just not moving very fast unfortunately just cant get the smoke to move out and that means well that air quality is going to suffer again tomorrow very unhealthy expected in the north bay and the co specially in the morning hours. I think by the afternoon a little bit of a sea breeze picks up on healthy in the east and also in the south low cloud deck also coming on shore watch out for this were looking at some dense fog visibility is less than a quarter of a mile in some part of the bay area early tomorrow morning 0 in Half Moon Bay into San Francisco into oakland, so certainly some thick fog early on tomorrow morning. And the temperatures may rebound just a little bit we saw him come back today plan on some 60s in the San Francisco. You got that smoke out there as well 60s along the coastline. Then youre going to see some 70s inside the maybe even heating up to 80 degrees in redwood city tomorrow, 80 amount view you see lot of in the south bay by tomorrow afternoon at something as the pope through a little bit more on that. Good news thats going allow for more mixing or atmosphere thats what we need a little sea breeze going outside that help to clear out their qualities we head in toward the next couple of days, but act or the coastline going to see that patchy fog continuing there and its going to be dense in some spots, especially early tomorrow morning. I think by the afternoon should begin to improve now over the next few days slowly, improving, i think as we get into this next week its going to take a while but theres a cold front that wants to drop in between wednesday and thursday like its a little bit closer maybe not enough to bring us some rain but i think its going to be enough to generate some pretty good winds around the bay area and that should probably the first time we have a real good breath, a fresh air but that is several days away guys. Lead that moment of unity along with the texans quarterback deshaun watson, history being made this weekend for the first time bets will be made legally in a city with an nfl franchise ron futrell has the latest now on the raiders odds this weekend in vegas. So the nfl season officially underway you gotta figure the happiest people in town are the folks at the sports books. The sea in football everybody around the country has got to be excited its almost like were getting back to a little bit more of normalcy when sports are. There isnt a lot entertainment right now no shows or concerts or anything so football sports in general is that the only entertainment weve got right now. Up this weekend with a full schedule on sunday. And an interesting know typically at the sportsbooks the home teams going to 3 point advantage. When it comes to playing in their own stadiums so without fans this at 3 point edge go away at the sports books there is a little bit of adjustment on that you know, obviously youve got your stadiums like kansas city and seattle where the fans play so much into point so you know its teams we will adjust maybe a half a point or a the other teams. Not all depends on the venue. As for the raiders the moneys coming in heavy on them right now they are threepoint favorites on the road at carolina. Got to take a lot of money on the raiders we were at the one and a half that line is up to 3 right now the money has been flowing in on the raiders so in the shadows of allegiance stadium here on the strip the raiders of course play on the road for their opening sunday, but they do come here to play their first game. In allegiance stadium that will be monday september 21st in las vegas. Im ron futrell.
