Meteorologist Lawrence Karnow about those fire dangers. Lawrence yeah, this kind of leading right into that right we have some extreme heat over these last couple of days and. These were some kind of records around the bay area that you rarely see but here we go a 112 today are recorded in Livermore Napa coming 111 also a record one 10 record in santa rosa richmond, how about that inside the bexar 107 degrees. A 107 also in redwood city and a 106 degrees in canfield and were not done there weve got more records 96 that was a record in oakland today, San Francisco International Airport 97 degrees a record in gilroy 112 degrees but all around the bay area. Extremely hot conditions and this comes on a day where we had extremely hot weather just yesterday. The only place that we saw some changes was right along the coastline. You see the 70s very comfortable in Half Moon Bay and instead of triple digit heat in San Francisco. It was 91 degrees but everywhere else was certainly very very hot now things are beginning to shift gears in the atmosphere. High pressure want to start to make its way back in across the bay kicking in behind that are low pressure thats going to move just east of colorado in fact its unlikely snow in colorado tomorrow. But because that drew system moves the east High Pressure builds in and now we start to see that north northeasterly wind that is the very dry offshore wind as that air sinks it approaches the coastline really dries out and heats up guess what weve got high fire danger and some gusty winds are likely to go along with that in fact the National Weather service has issued a red flag warnings up through the Santa Cruz Mountains above a 1000 feet also the east bay hills and the diablo range above a 1000 feet could see winds gusting 30 the 45 Miles Per Hour. That comes on top of that record he very dangerous fire conditions i think over the next couple of days slama county youre looking at 25 to 40 mile an hour winds across the entire bay area so that certainly a concern for them and then you get a little further north i think this could be the worst in the north bay above a 1000 you get to mount and get some higher peaks, mount saint lena going to see some very strong gusty winds 35 to 45 Miles Per Hour. Maybe gusts in excess of 50 to 60 Miles Per Hour across some of the highest peaks in the bay area. So certainly not good news, but watch what happens here latest in the forecast to show you the winds begin to pick up watch all the colors just pour into the bay area that is impressive that north northeast wind. These winds down in the urban areas into the 30s almost 36 miles an hour. And then you get in the upper mountains here were talking winds gusting over 40 Miles Per Hour looks like itll strengthen overnight tonight and ease up a little bit during the day still blustery throughout the day and then only to pick up again i think tomorrow night but tonight will be the strongest gust in the early tomorrow morning and certainly fire danger is going to be running extremely high humidity is down into the Single Digits over the next couple of days all right lawrence pg and e meantime started shutting off power in parts of 22 counties just about an hour ago they include these 3 bay area counties napa sonoma. And then also in lake county pg estimating that little more than 5,000 customers in napa county are affected. In sonoma pg e says that if they go forward was shut offs in santa rosa. Yes. Yes events smaller in terms of impacting fewer customers and we also want to make the event shorter our goal is to make the events much shorter than last year weve been doing a lot to like i said speed up the inspection times and you know also treating it the section allies on the grid Clean Technology on the grid to help really break the grid into smaller pieces so we can isolate better where exactly are we turning off the power. We also have microgrids in in place to to help minimize impacts to customers. We have are angling microgrid that is helping keeping the power on for england under calistoga them microgrid there that is helping keep downtown calistoga howard as well. All right diana contrarians from pg and e forest meantime residents in the north bay they were busy. Prepping for these power shut off today kron fours dan thorn has the story from calistoga. For people here in wine country theyve already had to deal with these high temperatures also the bad air quality and now theres the concern a potential power shutoffs but over the next couple of days, the biggest worry is the win. Areas across wine country are preparing for high hot wind and the potential for no power pg and e is planning to energized electrical lines to minimize the risk of fire danger were pretty prepared weve been through this multiple you never like when it happens calistoga mayor Chris Cannings small city is at risk of losing electricity along with thousands of others in napa county but calistoga also has a backup as one of the first cities to experience a Public Safety power shutoff pg and recently installed this planned interconnection hub to help get 2 thirds of the city up and running in case of a shot off grocery stores. Pharmacies etc police fire. Everything that we need to take care of everyone else in those folks who do live in the un powered area or an energized area. Well we will have some cooling centers for them to move over to the National Weather service has warned about high wind gusts over the next few days the hills have become a big concern for residents. The threat of fire is all too familiar. But the earlier threat and the potential for losing power has become alarming it said terrible thing were left in this heat and we dont have air conditioning or who is going to waste until we have a fully resilient. Power network. This is what they need to do and weve all experienced in this community, firsthand what happens when you have a power line go down during a high wind event. We dont want that. The mayor says if the interconnection hub works as planned it should be able to fire up the electricity within a couple of hours which is better than having to wait several days for the electricity to come back on pg and e has set up Community Resource centers for those that will be affected by these potential power shut off one of those is located and angwin at Pacific Union college another one here in calistoga at highlands Christian Fellowship and another one in saint helena at saint helene a Catholic School reporting in calistoga dan thorn kron 4 news. And a massive fire burning in Fresno County has doubled in size again the creek fire has now exploded to more than 13,000 acres. And its still 0 contained. Were joined right now by Kirstin Mitchell shes from our sister station in a fresno shes at the creek fire incident command post. In the daraa county. Just in the fire. I mean just keeps exploding whats the atmosphere like where you are right now. Yeah, well, i mean smoke is a huge problem really all over the valley because of this fire conditions here that has been consistent throughout the day. Theres not a lot of cell reception and a lot of people are visiting for that Holiday Weekend that Labor Day Weekend and are now having to turn around so it says all having very fast and its just really about getting that word out to those people that they need to evacuate and the last update we had tonight was more than 30,000 people under mandatory evacuations. Now cook person we saw some really alarming pictures of the fire and people that were basically trapped by it. What are the conditions at the fire. It can can you talk about the this sort of characteristics of this fire that makes it so hard to control. Yeah i think its just because a lot of these areas havent seen a fire before like this and theres a lot of a downed limbs there some beetle invasions to that has really killed off the trees and made them just prime fuel for fire and now there is a red flag warning the National Weather service put that out tonight that is in effect until tuesday evening tomorrow evening, so conditions overnight are expected to get worse as that wind does pick up. Have officials mentioned anything in terms of a plan to help the people that are trapped. Yeah we do know some rescue efforts as you in Fresno County but they had to call those off tonight, we know theres at least 50 people trapped tigers potentially and edison the peak and as well china sir at us in lake so right now there plane to go back out there and try to get them, but theres too much smoke for them to land earlier but that mission is definitely going to continue into the night and as far as Evacuation Centers go the red cross has set up to in one in Fresno County one in madera and we just stop by the Madera County one in oakhurst and it was just swamped with people there were more than a 100 people there waiting to find where they can sleep at night some playing to stay in their car. So those red cross volunteers are surely overwhelmed right now. It can only imagine lets hope that the winds die down so that will help the firefighters in their task tonight. And intense smoke from California Wildfires is really over the weekend. Its a smoke spreading from all the California Wildfires. The smoke also causing significant air quality issues and a wide range of locations. Fallout from the wildfires. Hes even touched down in las that city is also reporting bad air quality is hes the skies filled the vegas strip. The air quality in vegas course, currently extremely unhealthy for all kinds of people, especially if you have asthma. And speaking of air quality lawrence has the latest on that spare alert thats been spare the air alert thats been extended boy at non stop i mean just day after day of this unhealthy air and thats what weve been seen since the fires got started and here we go you can see the haze out there. Thats clouds coming in from the bay that is actually hayes again as that smoke settling in for the night weve been playing this over and over again. You see that smoke settle in for the night, the me wake up in the morning, its can smell the smell that smoke outside and certainly its improved a little bit along the coastline today we had enough of the sea breeze and inside of a moderate amounts of clues now not as nice as you start to see the yellows and the oranges and then even some read as you make your way into parts of oakland, the hills there in the san ramon and live more in the tri valley. And tomorrow the winds going to switch direction were going to see an offshore wind. So i think even coastal sections you may see more smoke than youve seen in quite some time so poor air quality in the forecast across the bay areas were going to see the pour smoke all the way to the coastline again and high fire danger to go along with that temperatures outside how about this its still almost 90 degrees in concord 83 in livermore 79 in san jose 70 degrees in oakland, 63 in San Francisco, 75 degrees. In santa rosa. All right lauren forecast High Pressure kind of building in and that ridge kind of taken over for a couple of days again in as a set something were going to get that offshore wind clearing out your skies through wednesday, then on thursday things begin to change a shift in the weather well see more of an onshore breeze, the fog low clouds return our temperatures cool off them watch the long range here see this cold front how about this models want to hold that together they tried to bring some rain in the bay area by the following tuesday still got a ways to go before we learned that one out but kind of interesting to see that coming through so heres your 1010 for you were expecting another hot one for tomorrow, then we start to Cool Temperatures down into the weekend. And those temperatures staying down no major heat wave after this one for at least 10 days. And as hot. A traditional labor day activities had a very different look about them this year, yeah, not only did labor day fall during the pandemic and he waved unhealthy air conditions caused by drifting smoke played in that just how people decided to spend their holiday lonnie wong samples some of what people face today. The admitir the step one dance and Fitness Studio holding several free classes to celebrate its new home is location. Classes like these are only allowed outdoors thats got to say the word second oh my gosh i can hardly sleep at all was worried about the temperature. That we didnt want to cancel last minute. They did from that or not it was the right decision it was exhausting for some of those who took part they never been called that only call a session she participated in to others, it was worth the felt really good to get your the people in just motivating each other. Its looking to well tackle mental invited visitors to the tourist location normally cause big crowds on Labor Day Weekend. Although there wasnt a special event visitors can eat shop and browse some surprises a lot of people, im surprised not at home but on these people are coming out perhaps they had a change of heart likely on this weekend i stay home. I mean i didnt feel like going nowhere nothing not just a home in 2 days, the holidays, had to go do something so i came from arizona were trying to stay hydrated for sure artists later right came down from Washington State where was 30 degrees cooler to participate in the annual chalk it up event they want their own shade and cool liquids, a small sacrifice for the sake of our the gulf of alaska talk about so its like people motivating to finish all of it. It was perhaps the combination of heat smoke and covid the cap. The beach crowd at this cornea park modest this was the typical weekend cloud earlier in the year. Well water craft were plentiful at the spot with the american and sacramento rivers meet groups on shore seem content to social distance and that William Land Park it was unusually quiet. The zoo is open to a limited number of visitors and Fairy Tale Town is now closed monday through wednesday. The doctors and nurses around the country are preparing for a fight against flu season and covid all at the same time as of the cohen explains why getting a flu shot this year is more important than ever for keeping you and your loved ones healthy as possible. Last year, no regrets no body likes getting a shot, but this year its more important than because this year were going to have not just flu. But also covid19 i am worried. I do think the fall in the winter of 2020 in 2021, im going to probably one of the most difficult times that weve experienced is the american Public Health. This year, theres not one not 2, but 3 reasons to get yourself a flu shot number one it will decrease the chances that youll get the flu or if you do get the flu, youll get a milder case. Number 2 you wont spread the flu to other people. Number 3 you wont end up taking up a hospital bed that someone else like a covid patient would need. And if you get sick getting the right diagnosis could be tough. We will be able to distinguish immediately between whether somebody has flu or whether somebody has covid. Flu vaccine manufacturers have ramped up production making 10s of millions more doses than last season and there are 2 new flu vaccines designed to protect older people who are especially vulnerable to the virus that this child right and this is right and 4 children the Trump Administration last month authorize pharmacists to administer the flu shot to children ages 3 and older hopefully this upcoming flu season will end up being relatively tame in the Southern Hemisphere where flu season is now ending theyve had a pretty easy season. Many of the physical distancing and Public Health and social measures that have been put in place which keep keeps people apart. May have actually played a role in reducing circulation of influenza. Even if that happens in the northern hemisphere, though its still a good idea to get a flu shot to keep you and those around you as healthy as possible. And that was Elizabeth Cohen reporting for us tonight. In addition to getting that flu shot for the fallen the winner. The cdc says it will be critical to continue wearing your mask. Washing your hands often and practicing social distancing. And president ial campaigns enter the homestretch candidates focusing on the economy this labor day and sparring whos best suited to lead the country. Next in sports, the divisionleading oakland as hosting the Houston Astros tonight and the bats came alive for the labor day celebrates americas Labor Movement highlighting the blood sweat and tears of workers after the pandemic ravaged the u. S. Economy, some people are not celebrating today both president ial candidates are focused on the labor market is the attempt to appeal to voters. Darryl forges is that the white house to explain. This labor day the spotlight is on jobs. We really celebrate. The American Worker we are in the midst of the fastest economic recovery and the u. S. History. So we have a lot to be thankful for an april during the height of the coronavirus pandemic the United States lost more than 20 million jobs since President Trump now touting a stronger economy weve added. A record setting 10. 6 million jobs since may. Democratic nominee joe biden says thats not enough. Long a stock market is doing great. Everything ok sir you have everybody else it can climb are millions of people still have trouble making ends meet. In are in desperate need of benefits we want to help. Businesses that are particularly impacted by this and will continue to work on proposed new legislation yet congress and the white house are at a standstill over the next round of stimulus funding there is no question that donald trump has been an abject failure and incompetent. When it comes to addressing the severe job loss that has happened as a result of the pandemic despite the pandemic and protests over Racial Injustice polls reflect a race that has barely budged which is why both campaigns are targeting key battleground states like wisconsin hello, wisconsin. Vice president mike pence a senator Kamala Harris are spending labor day and pennsylvania where biden met with labor leaders unions built no class still President Trump believes focusing on the economy may be the ticket to keep him in the white house under my leadership next year will be. Greatest economic here in the history of our country and project. At the white house. Im darryl forges.
