The westbound direction is pretty normal for this hour in the morning, under 10 minutes to get you to the north bay if thats where youre headed. And busy traffic on the east shore freeway commute. And a lot of folks from the north bay are heading over. Expect traffic heavy richmond to berkeley on westbound 80 because of the doyle drive closure. If you dont see this, this will help you out as well, as far as the closure, look at the cones, the barricades, you are not allowed to go through here, and thats because they need full access, both directions so they can work on the old roadway, to get the new parkway ready to go. So far this morning, we have seen people get caught in if they didnt know or forgot about it or whatever, they have come here, had to make u turns, chp officers have gotten out of the suvs, told them no, you have to go to a different area, different direction because of what you see in front of you, heavy machinery, dirt on the roadways, connectors, bridges, signs, when this is all done, the new parkway will be all ours and both tunnels will be at our disposal because over the past several years, we have used one tunnel in both directions. After this is over, well have both tunnels, each going their own direction. Thats the good news. The Golden Gate Bridge obviously is right in front of us, but you cannot, obviously, go in this direction because you will be arrested. If you go any further than this. There are cars me anderring their way meandering across. They will force you off at 19 19th avenue to make sure this is all theirs for the next, what, 79 hours. 70 hours at this point now. That one is leaving, the other is coming in. They are in what they call load and go mode out here. They have been preparing for this for weeks. They have known it was coming and now theyre putting their plan into action. Heres video from earlier this morning, and because of this they thought there would be increased crowds out here at the landing. There are. They instituted one extra ferry into service, and so far this morning, they say they have seen about 100 extra riders per boat all morning long. Take a break during the afternoon and come back for the evening commute. Commuters seem to be happy. A lot of people ride the ferry every day. Others do it just on special occasions, like this. And so far, so good. Now we had a chance to talk to the spokesperson from the Golden Gate Bridge transit agency. And she talked about their plans and how its working out so far. Usually there are a few ways you can get in and out of San Francisco. Thats actually the same today. You can still go across the Golden Gate Bridge, but were asking drivers to avoid it because we think the traffic back ups from the. Com drive closure are going the doyle drive closure are going to be horrendous. We have heard figures of two hours. Chp is saying up to four hours. So were talking about very significant delays on the road. The ferry will not be impacted in the same way, obviously, but our bus transit routes will be slowed as well. Reporter now, youre taking a look at the parking lot here at the larks Ferry Landing and and that parking lot is full, has been full for several hours, she says that filled up an hour to an hour and a half earlier than it normally does. If youre going to come over to the Ferry Landing to catch a boat, youre going to definitely have to get a ride over here or take one of their shuttles. As i said, andy, they have been preparing for this for weeks, and so far so good, obviously a lot of people have known about this closure for a while. Some of them going to work. Others are taking other means to get into San Francisco. And so far, it seems like its working out pretty well. As i said, theyre in load and go mode. As soon as one pulls up, they fill it up and get it back out on the water. Obviously we are watching the situation. If anything changes, were going to let you know. Extra ferries for the morning commute and the evening commute, but then for the weekend, back to normal . I know a lot of folks like to go to napa, but what about for the weekend folks . Reporter well, right now, they are still going to have some of their extra Services Going as far as ferries go. I do have to tell you that the bus service has been reduced by about 30 of their trips into San Francisco. So if if youre somebody that would normally take the bus, you may see the effect. Theyre pushing for people to get out here on the water. They say this is the best alternative to get into the city, especially this morning. Obviously its going to be lighter over the weekend. A lot of folks are avoiding this doyle drive closure, and instead, theyre headed over to the bay bridge toll plaza. 25 to 30 minute drive times from the mcarthur maze to the toll plaza and across the span into downtown San Francisco. You would never know this was a friday morning commute by looking at the bay bridge toll plaza , usually lighter at this hour. But very heavy because folks are using this as the alternate. The richmond, san rafael bridge, if you are using it as an alternate in the eastbound direction, a 7 minute commute time. Westbound just under 10 minutes getting to the 101 split in san rafael. Switching over to the east shore freeway, were seeing it much heavier than normal as folks are exiting off the Richmond San Rafael bridge and merges onto westbound 80 and east shore freeway packed all the way to the mcarthur maze as folks are headed to the bay bridge. As we take a look at our live shot, westbound 80, is backed up beyond the maze, youre looking at a 30 minute drive time to get you into downtown San Francisco. A lot of north bay commuters using this as their alternate, versus south 101 and taking the Golden Gate Bridge down into San Francisco. A couple earlier accidents snagged the drive early in the morning, around 5 30. Its definitely been busy at the bay bridge toll plaza. Switching over to the Richmond San Rafael, this is an alternate, traveling in the eastbound direction. Thats easy, though, just a 7 minute drive time to the east bay. Westbound direction, this is normal for this hour of the morning, just under 10 minutes to get you to the north bay and the 101 split. The east shore freeway, very busy because of this closure, the exit off the Richmond San Rafael bridge, eastbound 580, theyre going to merge onto westbound 580. Or westbound 80, rather, and thats where youre going to see it real heavy, 25 minutes getting you to the mcarthur maze. The san mateo bridge is pretty packed. Westbound 92, the right side of your screen, that clocks in at almost 30 minutes to get you to foster city and the 101 interchange. That ferry is empty but the ferries leaving here are anything but empty. They are load and go mode. They load up with passengers who are waiting. Thats been rapid fire all morning long. In fact, they have been planning this for weeks. The closure was supposed to happen last month. Once they delayed it, they went back to the drawing board and went all over their plans again. Its been pretty smooth here this morning. For the first couple boats they saw to 120 more people than normal. Every both that is left here has been full. They prepared for it. They brought one boat into service. They boat can carry 300 extra passengers. They will go back to normal schedule for the afternoon and for the Evening Community they will pick back up. As far as the weekend goes they will triple their normal boats for the weekend and they are going to extend their hours. That means if you are going to be coming back late tonight tomorrow night you can catch a late night boat. The last boats leave on midnight on friday and saturday. The last boat leaves on sunday at 10 30. As far as the buses they considered of adding buses but then decided they would reduce the amount of buses by about 30 that took trips into the city. They were afraid those buses would get stuck in traffic. If you take a look these boats are coming in fast and furious and getting them loaded as quick as possible. If you are someone who wants to ride the ferry from now until the afternoon there are no more parking places here at the ferry. You will have to get dropped you have take a bus or a shuttle. I think for us today the big thing were looking for to seeing what is going to happen with the evening commute and see if we got people not to come into the city and if they were able to spit it out. Is christie field and option . It is an option and going through different areas of presidio. We have people that dont necessarily know the area. Its confusing. We are doing our best to give directions. A lot of people tried to walk to the bridge, dont take the presidio go through the field. Live in San Francisco at the doyle drive closure.
