Russian Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny was buried on the outskirts of russia. He was mourned by thousands a mid threats by the kremlin and a Massive Police presence with his mother and father by his casket but with his wife and children outside of russia, navalny could get resistance to putin. Alexei navalny dreams of a russia that was free but citizens unafraid. And today, thousands tens of thousands braid the rest. To thank the man who helped them replace fear with faith in themselves. They chant russia will be free. Putin is a murderer. No to war. We couldnt not come let them see that many remember, many know silencing wont work. And yet today was also a reminder of the faith that befalls the kremlins opponents. Navalnys open casket overseen by his parents. Were moved quickly before everyone could say goodbye. But even in his last moments above ground in his last rites as the pryce covered his face, navalny did it his way. The orchestra played Frank Sinatras my way as he was buried. And after the theme song to terminator 2 whos message is the future is not written. And that perhaps is navalnys legacy saying that faith hasnt been decide and the will to fight. The risk of arrest was real. Police detained thousands of navalnys supporters across the country and before the funeral, Dmitri Peskov said this any unauthorize authorized gatherings will be held accountable. In russias system navalny was sentenced to decades. He died in the penal colony of what they called natural cause. His wife yulia said he was murdered. Alexei was tortured. He was in a tiny stone cell cutoff from the outside world and denied visits, phone calls and then even letters. And then they killed him. Today, yulea posted this video tribute, a love letter to a love song, a wife whos lost her husband, a russian opposition whos lost its leader. Navalny knew he could be silenced. He wasnt afraid either. My message for the situation if im killed is very simple, not give up. Until today, they didnt. Navalny might have been imprisoned. Thank you for being with us. As we saw thousands of people lined up to pay their respects for Alexei Navalny thats a heavy police presence, what should we make of this stunning . Well, thanks for having me. The important thing to know is that despite the horrific cost of actually showing up on the streets, you can be beaten, imprisoned for many years, russians, throughout are still willing to showup because they despise the war and despise what the authoritarian kremlin regime have done to Alexei Navalny. They have done that covertly and uncovertly. They continue to protest after the ramping up of opposition. His mother accused him of trying to pressure her into a secret burial. Why do you think they caved and allowed this funeral to take place . Thats absolutely right. Kremlins officials wanted to put navalnys family through a world of hurt. They started doing this for a while now. This didnt start with them murdering Alexei Navalny. They destroyed his moms business years ago through law fair. And i think the reason why they caved in was a Massive Public campaign demanding the release of navalnys body. We participated in the public pressure campaign. Our platform gathered over 100,000 submissions demanding navalnys body be released. Isnt the kremlin impervious to outside pressure or thats theyre thought to be . Not exactly. Its quite clear that the kremlin is concerned about public attention within the russia and outside of russia. Thats why its important that western media in general that you should keep your eyes peeled on whats going on in russia and the kremlin and especially whats going on with Political Prisoners with whom theyre over 1,000 throughout russia right now. Its important that we keep attention on them. Alexei navalny was buried to the sound track of his Favorite Movie which was terminator 2. Whats the significance there . Well, navalny, i think he sewed his significance, and the meaning of campaign in russia, he wanted to give hope to ordinary russians. And i think that the terminator theme more specifically its this final shot of Arnold Schwarzenegger going down with thumbs up. I think this sums up what navalny would have wanted for the people of russia to know that hes trying to give them hope even beyond the grave, im sure that Alexei Navalny would have wanted russians not to despair but to remain hopeful because navalny believed in a russia that is not just free but in a russia thats happy and beautiful. And that is impossible to achieve without hope for a change. With navalnys sudden death, the russian on session has lost its leading figure. What does it do now . The thing about russian opposition is that it doesnt concentrate, his figure. Of course, navalny is a larger than life symbol. So are many other symbols and figures in russian civil society. But whats important is we keep our eye tons grassroots element of Russia Society and the grassroots of russian opposition its quite clear that theyre not mourning. Theyre organizing. They are taking all the power they have and theyre trying to carry on navalnys banner. So the important thing right now is to support them especially for those those of you in the west who are wondering how can i help Russian Society and russian resistance . How you can help is by pressuring your representative appear your politicians into providing shelter and platform to russian dissidence to Russian Society representatives who have to flee abroad so that any sort of conversation that western leaders with russian leaders the fate of russian Political Prisoners is front and center. People who have tested positive can return when symptoms are improving and theyve been feverfree for thats 24 hours without medication. But the c. D. C. Also encourage people with improving symptoms to have a mask, keeping distance in public. Dr. Mandy cohen joins me now. Dr. Cohen, welcome back to the newshour. Thanks for having me. Greet be here. This is first time you shifted isolation guidance from 2021 when it was reduced from 10 days to five days. Why these changes in guidance right now . Whats that based son in well, we are in a different place. And thats after a lot of hard work to make sure we have the tools to protect each other against covid. What weve been seeing is lower hospitalizations and lower death even as we saw high level of virus spread. So this past winter season, we saw both in our wastewater data and other that is there is a lot of virus spreading in our community. But luckily those hospitalizations continue to go down. What happened we were seeing is that really vaccination is what is continuing to protect folks. So we wanted to unify our guidance today not just for covid but across covid, flu and r. S. V. So folks who have common sense Practical Solutions so they can practice across a range of virus. California and others began relaxing their covid isolation guidance as early as last year counter to your guidance at the time system this sort of the c. D. C. Chasing catching up to where people have already been for a while . Well, you know what, we were looking at this guidance last summer and seeing if we can move in this direction and then the virus changed in last august. And we wanted to make sure we were through another winter season that those trends in lower hospitalizations continue to hold and they did we feel comfortable moving forward now. But remember, like always, this virus change. If anything changes in terms of our effectiveness of vaccines of treatment, we may be back here needing to change guidance. But we feel comfortable aligning across covid, flu and r. S. V. Like making sure you get treatment and staying home when youre sick. Cases oh covid have fallen dramatically. But your data shows there are hundreds of people dying every week from covid. Still some 20,000 hospitalized weekly . As you you know this guidance change has its critics. Among them is dr. Tope will, he said ha this policy change is reck less. He said it will serve to promote more spread of covid and long covid. Could it do that . So i want to say, remember, vaccines and treatment continue to protect folks. Just this past season in the beginning of this season if we saw that 95 of the people who were coming to the hospital did not have an updated Covid Vaccine and 70 didnt have the one from the year before, right, so what were seeing said another way is vaccines can protect us from going to the hospital or having our life be taken by this virus. So we have to use those tools. I think you also know that far too few adults got the updated Covid Vaccine only about 20 , 22 got the updateed vaccine. So we definitely need to see folks using that important tool to protect themselves. But to be fair, the vaccine can prevent serious illness but it didnt prevent the vlad of covid. Will people isolating for a short amount of time potentially add to the spread of the virus . Well, the good news is that when you get vaccinated you are both less likely go into the hospital but youre also less likely get long covid and you are less likely to get this virus overall. Less virus spreading means that we are protecting others. And that we wanted to give simple, clear kinds of guidance so that folks can remember them and that can be really actionable because if more people are using the guidance, we think that can benefit everyone. The folks that were vulnerable they were top of mind at c. D. C. , we all know someone who is at higher risk, hoo immuno compromised. So we were thinking about them went we did this guidance. We found the balance to protecting the most vulnerable and having this clear and simple way for most folks to protect themselves. You said this week that americans 65 and older should get an additional dose of that latest covid vax vaccine. Do you worry that relaxing the guidance at the same time youre asking people to go get another booster sends conflicting messages . , no in fact, our guidance today the very first core strategy that we want to emphasize is being up to date on your vaccines. Vaccine is what were conning to see protect folks here. So we want to make sure folks are getting those updateed vaccines. I want to me view for folks that we know this covid virus continues to change. And we need to stay ahead of it. And weve already started the pro sets c. D. C. And f. D. A. To update the Covid Vaccine for later this year. So right now, folks should start planning if this fall to get both an dated Covid Vaccine and an updated flu shot. All right, dr. Mandy cohen, c. D. How are democrats aiming to boost their stamina among voters who say that immigration is their top issue in this election. By pointing out the fact that the president the sitting president of the United States in conjunction with the Senate Majority leader, chuck assumer, along with one of the most conservative members of the senate. I cant believe im spacing out on his langford from oklahoma that they sat down and hammered out a deal after the president wept before the nation and said everything is on the table. Im trying to negotiate. They negotiated. They came with a bill that bits and pieces were leaking out that were so bad from the president s biggest perspective that they were raising hell about if this becomes law, this is going to set immigration policy back for a long time. We knee to do something. They come up with the bill. And what happened . Donald trump made a phone call or put out some social media post and said dont do it. Republicans refused to take yes an answer and gave President Biden the perfect thing to go before the nation and say, im trying. I was part of this deal. They i gave them basically everything they want. And they still said no. Those people are not serious. I think if he hammers that message time and time again. I think lit break through. And part of what jonathan just described to us on full display yesterday, President Biden invited President Trump to call on republicans to support this bipartisan border deal. And then former President Trump accused joe biden of having a what do you call a joe biden invasion. I mean, its fairly clear how theyre trying to to play the politics here. I mean, only 2 of americans support joe bidens immigration policy. They support trumps policy over bidens policy by infinite success. The simple fact is the democrats have been out of touch on this issue. In 2016, you had a large number of candidates. Raise their hand and said that was for decriminallingize. Thats far off. The biden policies just havent worked. Our asylum system are there to help extreme persecution. We cant take all those people. Now, we can have a policy that prioritizes, the people that are breaking all rather than applying to the sealomele asylum system. The issue is not necessarily that its chaos. Which is to say until we digest all of the people who are in the system. That will thats try to impropose some order if its chaos, its going be bad news. That will be a great thing to do, david. But theres no money. One of the things about that senate bill is that it allowed custom and Border Control to do what you are saying some of the chaos will continue not because the president isnt doing enough, but because but because the senate cant pass a bill that would make it possible for the president do what he wants to do but also for republicans to get done what they say needs to be done now. Let me ask you this because the president is weighing some congressional action which will allow him to tight rules. If there is a problem at the sun border, why not do do it . Whats he waiting for . Does he really is does hieralgia power . I wonder if the white house you should ask me that question beforehand so i could have made some calls to see what theyre doing. But you know, the president has made it clear before the bill was made public or just after, that hes willing to do that. Why he hasnt done that i wond every if its because they were trying to see the legalities of doing it. Look ahead to next week, weve got super tuesday and the state of the union. Lets start with super tuesday because theyre holding a contest. This is aporn. We will learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of donald trump and joe biden. What are you going to be watching for . How soon nikki haley drops out after she gets crushed in every state. Nikki haley is 52. Shes got a long political feature. If she stays in the lane, shes damaging the party that she presumes what to be heart of. The other thing to look for is how much softness there is in a biden coalition. Theres some noncommitted voter. Theyre not exactly rushing out to dean phillips. Theres no dean philips jagr nut. People are nervous. But i think he did a good job. I think its a pretty strong sport in the democratic party. No, the things ill be looking for will be the the percentage spread between donald trump and nikki haley. Its been growing since since iowa. But the fact that she lost her home state, ok. Fine in south carolina. But she got 40 of the vote that is a sizable chunk of the republican electorate who says were not down with this guy will that replicate itself in the super tuesday states . When it comes to to the democratic side, i want to see if there are states that have uncommitted or noncommitted or dean phillips. How much support they get. I suspect especially since its super tuesday theyre not going to get a lot of support at all. The biggest story whiz Mitch Mcconnell announcing that le not seek another term as the republican leader as the longest serving leader in historyry. I want to get an assessment of his consequence and controvertial legacy. I wan to make it ethical. It clear that it was ethical. The Republican Party shutdown borders and shutdown trade and were isolationist. That party lasted until 1952 when he made an outward party that was for internationally. And that lasted 60 years. And over the last couple of years we can say that the party over and when we were returning from the 1930s Republican Party, isolation. Some degree of nativeness and some degree of protectionism. He thought he would never be in a position to say that he would miss Mitch Mcconnell. But giving the alternatives and thats how hes feeling. Let me just give him his flowers. Because he is our version of the master of the senate. Whiley cunning. No one knows the senate rules like Mitch Mcconnell. He even made up some rules. Made up the rulele that you cant a sitting president cannot and are in the Supreme Court. He stoled the seat from president oh woo bama. Fast forward to the death of Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg a month before the election . Three days. Three days before the election. He turned around and said, no, we must we must have a new justice and Justice Amy Coney barrett got on to the Supreme Court ceiling a conservative super majority. 63, super ma majority. Another thing he did was remake the official jew addition air in the image he wanted it to be which was young and conservative, a pipeline of federal charges young federal judges some of dubious quality who would then rise up and, you know, fill higher higher n the official jew addition area. Judiciary. Mc mcconnell voted not to impeach donald trump for his role in the insure reaction. If he had voted to convict donald trump, other senators would have followed along. Trump would have not been convicted. What made his action more galling is that after he let him off the hook he gave a fire and brimstone speech that was the right thing to say. Up fortunately, it didnt match the vote he gave. Ill give him his flowers for being a mastermind, a master political genius for what he wanted to do. Hopped on tiktok after my daughters told me not to because it was for the younger generation. But i had to prove them wrong. Mother and daughter soon teamed up on line. Tell me about the typical kind of dances you do. For me its the upbeat, funky, move your body in the riddic fashion. But last week, the duo stepped into a you new genera, a country song courty of beyonce. I said were doing country now, beyonce . She released texas hold em. A musical theater . So i had to do a little bit of research on that one. And so its just kind of growing. Ive seen people belly dancing. Ive seen people riverdancing to that sock. Its spark a lots of creativity and challenging people to move to music that they typically wouldnt. I mean, the first thing that stood up to me i recognized it. I was fascinating here especially. Like people have been in country abidingly since the beginning of the sean are. The ban yo has a long and complex history. But that begins in africa. The kind of open throat hear or even the sound of a steel guitar. Randall has spent 40 years. Her new book, my Black Country unbacks. And the industrys exclusion for black artists for decades. A lot of the items kep cleared out. People dont know what theyre getting rid of. So far only about 10 of the materials has made its way back home, but whether a return happens or not, he believes the effort is worth it. I just love it. I think its important. I think its extremely important. I think that people deserve to have their memories back. And i think that every day life is important to be preserved. In 199, marcus was 23 years old when he and hi parents went on is a farrahy to kenya and tanzania his mom captured this footage that would be found baguet milwaukeeer more than 30 years later. And we didnt really lose track of it like we lost it. It just gets buried in the stuff. And then my father died around seven years ago. And when my mom moved house, its a little cassette tape. So it kind of lost in there. Until got aen milwaukeeers most went viral and a team of volunteers started chipping in to try to find who this woman was. And i looked at it sure enough, my mom, dad and i are trending on tiktok i can didnt know what that meant at the time. It it honored so many comments that a ticktocker decide what internet sleuthing and found me. Marcus who is now 56 and police bethesda, maryland. Recreating parts of his original footage. He says these two videos which have been viewed for than 1 i think it presented opportunities to find themselvessed and not be scared, let go. Theres a lot of tiktok post that is include videos of people crying. Its a very simple family on a safari. I think the ending with my father conditioned then showing that he had passed that just as an ending that just really hit a lot of people. Since this he has made several more connections include ing with the friedmans a jewish family that lived in vienna and lost these photos taken in 1943. He was able to track down their vell tiffs and later discovered they had likely fled to new york. We were able to get in contact with that family and return those memories with them which they have never seen before. It was the perfect story from start to finish. So having just one or two clues and then having so many people participate in trying to find that family and then being able to find them in the end. With the viral success of his posts, people from all over the world began sending in material in hopes that the museum couldf, india, south america, all over the world or even on the ground on the street. He opened one package from the united kingdom. Look at this one. Its like a group of minors. It contains both the picture and a letter begin the cursive addressed to jim, ruth and the boys. It begins with birth days keep coming along and its nice to know that we will be remembered. If i can do this, scan you photographs.
