I am in washingtod this is bbc world news america. Donald trump appears in court on allegations of fraud as prosecutors seek to find the former u. S. President a quarter of a billion dollars. Leaders are worried about the recent funding deal reached in washington becse it does not include new aid for ukraine. A bbc panorama investigation finds the x ceo of abercrombie and fitch and his british partner faces allegations of exploitation for men recruited for sex events they hosted around the world. You are very welcome to world news america. Former u. S. President donald trump spent the day in a new york court where he faces sprawling allegations of business fraud. New York Attorney general is speaking to prevent mr. Trump from conducting business in his former home state of new york. He could also face a 250 million fine. Prosecutors accused him and members of his family of repeatedly committing fraud through his Business Empire. They claim that for years, mr. Trump deceived banks and insurers by overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net , allegedly all to secure funding for the trump organization. The former president denounced the trial as a scam. We have a great company. I built a great company. It has some of the greatest real estate assets in the world and now i have to go before a rogue judge as a continuation of russia, russia, russia, as a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time. I dont think the people ofhis country are going to stand for it. If i were not leading in all the polls or if i werent running, i wod not have any of these cases. I would not be seeing you this morning, but i will be seeing a lot of you because this is a horrible thing that is happening to our country and weve got to get it straightened. Caitriona the attorney general also spoke as she arrived at court. Donald trump and the other defendants have committed persistent and repeated fraud. Last week, we proved that in our motion for summary judgment. Today, we will prove are other claims. My message is simple no matter how powerful you are, no matter how much money you think you may have, no one is above the law. And it is my responsibility and my duty and my job to enforce it. The law is both powerful and fragile. Caitriona lets go now to our correspondent in new york. Talk us through what is the former president accused of here. Well, the core of this case as we heard was decided last week that he inflated his properties by millions of dollars, making his net worth inflated about 2. 2 billion. What that shows is, for example, trump tower, its 11,000 square feet in size, he said it was over 30,000 square feet. The judge said based on those facts, a Real Estate Developer grossly inflating sizes could only be considered fraud. What this will be looking at his other parts of the case. Falsifying records, insurance fraud. Those other claims the attorney general has the show it was part of a conspiracy. That is what this trial is looking at now. Donald trump coming out swinging, denyi he ever committed any fraud. Caitriona as you said, he rejected all the charges. How long is this trial expected to last . When can we know the outcome . Originally, this trial was slated to go for about three months, but because the judge decided to keep part of it early on, it will not be expected to last several weeks. We already heard from the first witness today, donald bender, one of the accumbens that dealt with a lot of accountants that dealt with a lot of the financial forms the trump organizaon filed. He said he relied on the trump organizations own estimates and if he knew anything was wrong, he would not have put his name on it. So, we will hear from more people from the trump organization. Also, potentially donald trump and his two sons are on the witness list, so we will see if they do testify. Certainly, it will be a lot of experts giving their opinion on these types of valuations because what we heard from Donald Trumps team is this is just business as it is done in new york. We will hear from experts about what they think of that. Caitriona the former president is facing four separate court proceedings. How significant is this one . Yeah, at first glance, people might say this is a simple fraud case a civil fraud case, not a criminal case. He is facing four other criminal trials that could amount to jail time for mr. Trump. But remember, donald trump billed his entire brand, his career on being a successful businessman. He always wanted to make it in newark. New york. With this case, everything he has built in this city is at stake. In fact, his ability to ever do business again in new york. While we have seen him move to florida and give up his residency in new york, this could be the final ties he has in this city if the attorney general proves her claims and gets her way. Caitriona thanks for that. A crisis has been averted in washington for now. Congress passed a lastminute stopgap funding bill hours before the government was set to shut down at midnight on saturday night. The bill keeps the government open through november 17 and includes Natural Disaster aid, but not additional funding for ukraine. Mccarthy relied on democratic votes to pass the bill which angered far right members of the Republican Party, including florida congressman matt gaetz who is now threatening to ot mccarthy. Gaetz suggests mccarthy took a side deal with President Biden. The speaker of the house gave away to joe biden the money for ukraine that joe biden wanted. It is going to be difficult for my republican friends to keep calling President Biden feeble while he continues to take Speaker Mccarthys lunch money in every negotiation. Caitriona Speaker Mccarthy has been standing by his actions to keep the government open. I do not think it is good for the house, i do not think it is good for this institution. I do not think it is good for the country. We have 45 days to get to work. Caitriona earlier, i spoke to the montana republican congressman Matt Rosendale who originally opposed mccarthys speaker bid in january. Thank you for joining us. Your colleague, congressman matt gaetz, said he may file a motion to vacate later this week to remove Speaker Mccarthy. Would you like to see him removed . Mr. Rosendale i think what you are starting to see is a gathering of people that are opposing Speaker Mccarthys leadership style. We have seen that group grow from the original 20 members of congress that opposed him during the speakers battle in january when we saw he developed his own debt ceiling package with President Biden several months ago. That group to grew to 70 republicans that voted against it as it went over to the senate. Most recently in the c. R. He was able to negotiate with the democrats, we saw 90 republicans vote against it. I think the number of people that Speaker Mccarthy has basically lost the confidence of is growing dramatically. What we are very concerned about now is this ideal we are hearing about that he struck with President Biden in regards to additional funding for ukraine when so many people across the country have made it exceedingly clear that they want to get her own southern border secure before they would support any Additional Support for ukraine. Caitriona we will talk about that in a moment, but just on this move to potentially remove him as speaker, expressing opposition is one thing, but it is very serious move to actually remove him. Do you think you would get to a majority on that . Mr. Rosendale that i am not sure of. I will tell you. But i will tell you there is a growing from the Republican Party that they do not trust the speaker and his judgment and his negotiating skills and the work hes been doing to represent us as these transactions all end up in t senates lap or the president himself. We are finding and seeing it play out in real time a growing number of people that are opposing his ability to be able to deliver. Caitriona on the deal you mentioned with the president , you have been tweeting about it as well. You said the republican conference deserves better than to have the speaker negotiating in a backroom deal with the president. Do you havany evidence such a deal was done . Mr. Rosendale we are not sure about that yet. What i will tell you is that Speaker Mccarthy has not denied he has made this arrangement with the president , and the president has been very clear that this deal has already been struck. What we are wondering now is when will it show up . Is it going to show up after we end up having yet another c. R. Presented to us at the end of 45 days . Or is this going to be a separate standalone piece of legislation that will be brought from the senate to the house within the next 45 days . I dont know about that. My focus has been to make sure we continue our work on delivering the 12 separate appropriation bills that the American People expect us to do. The statute calls for us to do, so we can Fund Government in a transparent and responsible manner. The budget act of 1974 says this work should have been done. It should have been done by june 30. Speaker mccarthy did not direct the committees to complete that work. I have been here working to 1 00, 2 00 in the morning to get the job done. I stayed last weekend, worked with the rules committee. I am ready, willing, and able and so are many members of congress to get these 12 appropriation bills done so we are not forced to fund the government with another pork laden, multithousand page omnibus bill at the end of the year which has been happening for decades now. We must change that or else we will continue to grow this National Debt from the 33 trillion that we face right now. Caitriona ok, but it was very fraught to getting to where you got, buying this extra time over the weekend. What leads you to thi you will be able to do a deal within the next 40 days or so . Mr. Rosendale we absolutely mechanically have the time to get the remaining appropriation bills done. Of the remaining eight bills, that only contains about 400 billion worth of the total. Nearly 7 trillion in spending that the federal government is responsible for, or proposes is the better way to put it. You are talking a fraction of the total spending, so we should be able to go through each of those bills in a much faster rate of speed. We did four of those bills last week. Agriculture unfortunately did not pass but the work was done. We can revisit that. Of the remaining bills, it is only about 400 billion worth of federal obligation. So, we should be able to get, i think, a lot more of those done a lot faster. Caitriona but it does require compromise. The whole point is we heard from members all week long about being prepared to do whatever it took to keep them government open and ultimately that involved this deal that was done with the democrats. So, where are the areas you would be prepared to compromise or move on a little . Mr. Rosendale so, im willing to sit down and have discussions with anyone about any provisions within the appropriations bills. I think where the conversation needs to start though is to complete those appropriation bills, get them over to the senate. And then the process does begin. The senate can actually work those appropriation bills themselves and then send back a counter offer, if you will, to the house of representatives so that we can come together and find some Common Ground to pass these. But the big problem that weve seen from Speaker Mccarthy, whether you are talking about the debt ceiling transaction or the continuing resolution, is he continues to negotiate with the president and the democrats without including the republican conference, and we are just given this transaction to vote up or down on, and its not acceptable. That is why his position is in jeopardy. Caitriona ok, we will leave it there for the moment. Matt rosendale, thanks for joining us. Mr. Rosendale thanks for having me on. Caitriona the European Unions most senior diplomat Joseph Peralta of the bbc hes worried by the u. S. Decision not to include new ukraine aid into the shortterm funding deal. His remarks comes as the Eu Foreign Ministry met in kyiv. The u. S. Officials are reportedly concerned that corruption in ukraine could ultimately derail western support. Our ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse has more. James with the European Union in ukraine, this was an attempd show of united front where you have what was hopefully 27 Foreign Ministers from member states, three were missing in the end, two from poland and hungary, two countries that have had political difficulties around continued support for ukraine. Nevertheless, it is a meeting not to be dismissed. The European Union has provided tens of billions of euros of military and humanitarian aid to this point. Theyve emerged from this meeting announcing continued training for tens of thousands of ukrainian fighters. So, we are seeing that continued longterm support being pledged, but if you scratch behind the surface, certainly with the Biden Administration officials in a leaked document on the politico website suggesting they are concerned about highlevel corruption which continues in ukraine. Kyiv has embarked on a sizable anticorruption campaign. President zelenskyy has really not let up on trying to stamp out corruption as a key condition. It shows the very skepticism in the u. S. Which the white house is struggling to contain, not least with some pockets of the Republican Party, as well as some crack some the european continent with a promoscow Party Winning an election in slovakia. In the past, ukraine has already relied on military progress to ease fears or satisfy more skeptical allies in the west. At the moment, the counteroffensive is going slowly, so we are seeing president zelenskyy rely on his diplomatic skills or the never since the fullscale invasion. Caitriona the former chief executive of Global Fashion brand abercrombie and fitchnd his british partner are facing allegations of exportation from men. The bbc investigation found highly organized operation running the events with a middleman finding young men. Eight men told the bbc they attended these events, some of whom alleged they were exploited or abused. Mr. Jeffries and mr. Smith did not respond to requests for comment. We have the story. In the early to thousands, abercrombie and fitch became one of the hottest labels in the u. S. And around the world. Sexualized imagery and provocative billboards turned the teen retailer into a multibilliondollar sensation. The man behind the vision was then ceo Mike Jeffries. Mike was tireless. He was very energetic and boisterous. He was an incredibly big personality. He would explode into a room. Bbc panorama has uncovered a highly organized International Operation recruiting young adult men for sex with Mike Jeffries over several years when he was the ceo of the brand. This experience broke me and it mentally messed me up. Two men have agreed to tell me their accounts on camera. They attended separate events hosted by Mike Jeffries in 2010 and 2011. Both men say they were recruited an addition to a middleman, james jacobson, known to the men as jim. Mr. Jacobson led them to believe they were pursuing a modeling opportunity. I was made to believe, look, this is where everyone gets their start this is where you want to get your start. It was like he was selling fame. And the pce was compliance. David says compliance meant gaging in a sexual act with mr. Jacobson. Seven more men i have spoken to say theyve also met with jim. The men say mr. Jacobson was part of a well oiled machine, which included recruiters, drivers and other staff. Mr. Jacobson told the bbc any encounters were fully consensual, not coercive. He said he had no recollection of making promises of modeling opportunities and that everyone he came into contact with who attended these events went in with their eyes wide open. This is the route the men would have taken. Once through the audition, the men would go through an event hosted by mr. Jeffries and his british partner matthew smith. Some were held at this home here in the exclusive hamptons community. Barrett said he was introduced to mr. Jacobson by an older model who he felt indebted to and knew there would be some kind of sexual activity. David says he was not expecting sex to take place at the hamptons. I was taken chaperone over to the main house to the doors that entered into the bedroom where everything was happening. Then, told to disrobe. He says he engaged in an intimate act with another man. David says mr. Jeffries had sex with him. I did not feel safe to say no or i dont feel comfortable with this. I didnt feel like i had any choice. Both men said they felt leaving did not seem like an option because mr. Jeffries private staff was supervising the event, including in the bedroom. They also said they were asked to sign nondisclosure agreements beforehand and were not given any copies. It felt like they were trying to scare us. It felt like intimidation. Both men were paid about 2500 after the events the attended. Still hoping it may lead to modeling work, david went to further events with mr. Jeffries and mr. Smith, both in the u. S. And around the world. Two u. S. Lawyers who reviewed evidence recovered by the bbc said prosecutors would investigate whether the allegations would amount to sex trafficking. The bbc has made repeated attempts to contact mr. Jeffries and mr. Smith. They have not responded. Abercrombie and fitch told us it is appalled and disgusted by the allegations about their former ceos behavior. It said a new executive Leadership Team has transformed the culture, adding the company has zero tolerance for abuse, harassment, or discrimination of any kind. Bbc news.
