There is no political agenda to this, but for military members such as myself have had to endure weeks of trainingand psychological evaluations to think that this weapon of war ceasily be purchased with a simple background check or safety check to me is a little bit insulting almost. In april they removed about half of the fleet afte plates over brake problems and last week lyftpulled its electric bikes off the streets after reports of some catching fire. For the latest i went out on the street to meet our transportation edor we are supposed to talking about Something Else but you pullup on scooter. Why is that . We have a shared bikes shortage here in San Francisco. I grabbed the nearest two wheeler which happened to be a scooter. Why ag there a sho we have the bike Share Network one by lyft and they have been having problems the last few month. Threethr four mo ago they had problems with brakeon the electric assist bicycles. Thespuare very r in San Francisco because of our hills. So, they had to take half the bikes off the street. They just introduced a new fle. These bikes have pink wheels. A few days taftt the batteries died and they took bikes out again what we are seeing is a little unusual. L a bike rack. If there had been whone re i was, i would have written a bike here. A lot of these bikes ill have signs on them. What is the arrangement with San Francisco and the bay area . A bit complicated. Here is what is happened. This company made an exclusive agreement with the metropolitan transportation district. Is the agency that handles funding for large po traation projects in the bay area. Wh this agreement it covered San Francisco and san jose and emeryville. They put these bikes on the street with expensive stations and they would want to pick up all of the cost and we would enjoy the benefits. There is so dissatisfaction here in San Francisco because month of the bike srtage. We can reverse engineer numbers and the ridership revenue for the system last year was about 3 million. Lyft is a very pabig c. They just went public this year. They spend undreds of millions of dollars, and in fact they reported a loss for the most recent quarter yesterday close to 900 million for the so, 3 million isnt real big in the sceme of things. Its not just the revenue stream. There is mor what they get from their stomers is the data. Even though itnot personally identifiable data they get a lot of information about peoples travepatterns and peoples credit card numbers and a lot of consumer data they want or someone else wants that they can sell. Th longtermt may be the real financial situation for these obig players like lyft and uber. It is these consumers walking by on the dewalk. Anybody that uses these services, that is one thing they are giving up. They can tell where people are going. It actually helthem in their business knowing where they need to serve people and it can inform decisions about Consumer Behavior reand w people are going and when and the sorts of services and goods they are looking for. There was a big appetite for a Bicycle Network done in a controlled way with this system you need a docking station and people come here and pick up a bike and drop off a bike. There has beepra widd experience where they are introduced ith people leaving them were ever. People dont like that. That is probably something they will not get sed to. In san fraisco with the scooters the companies that are operating agreed system for you have to walk up a bike. Usually retakes of the obstruction problem. I was there when they first started to appear and there was a lot of backlash. It almost seemed like they were a sign of gentrification. As that faded, are they r becoming a of the fabric of the community . There is something about this. Lyft is a big corporation. For the most part these things are being accepted. The incidence of vandalism, for inneance, on these bikes, the one with the battery fires, there has been some vandalism but not much. When they talk about the system in place they are saying why ise a monopoly . Can we do something about that . And about the bes themselves, they are quirky. They are happy. They are not that speci. First, 30 years ago there e re eight headliners and the hope that peowould buy a lot of beer. Now youve got 150 bands an14 stages. What has changed about this jazz festival . It has been iga community that comes together every year to produce. There are folks that are still involved in the organization from the first year. Their knowled is still present. These stages are spread throughout downto. Sometimes we close the streets or have door venues and its an undertaking that involves the whole community. City partners and other folks, too. There s en ups and downs in the past 30 years. How has san jose jazz survived and thrived . We dichange the beer Business Model. It inwas orly a free festival and we have adapted to a gated festival with different ticket leels. The Business Model is something we need to move in this direction and also the demographics of the valley. There new communities that come in and our programming has been staying abreast of that. Staying relevant. That leads me to a question. I want to know who is coming e now and they come from. They come from all over. We are excited to have a wide range that we are bringing in. International acts. Some outstanding folks. We are excited to see this. Great acts from coloia. We saw them last october and looked into getting them here. We are fortunate to have an embarrassment of riches musically. We have a lot of folks that are regional that are performing as well. This festival mixes in r and b. Jazz purists wou take issue with that and they would quibble with whether acts li these are real jazz. What do you tell the . Puris first, its true. Thats right. The festival s. Chan we go by the san jose jazz summerfest. It reflects the variety of music. We will ydeco and mariachi and there is a great bali would project. There is a wide range that we ar representing. Jazz is such a broad realm. We do a lot of latin jaand there is a swing stage and our jazz beyond programming. Its an opportunity for folks of any interest, and straight ahead fans will find a lot of straight ahead jazz as well.
