Maybe thats the best way to connect with our communities. Lets talk to jess right now. Another shared experience is the weather and wind. I know. It has been so windy and interestingly enough, thats not even the biggest weather story for us. Its this little heat dome thats occurring over the bay area today and areas like San Francisco are going to hit the upper 70s and we have low 80s in the forecast across the bay bridge all the way up into actually over into the bay bridge into oakland and then across the Golden Gate Bridge also all the way up into the marin county too. So as we head into the afternoon hours, were going to continue to keep accomplice owe on the winds though because the offshore winds are starting to pick up. To add to that low relative humidity and warm temperatures in the forecast for us through the rest of the week and a moderate heat risk in our inland areas as the concern for us. Areas like the east bay, stretching down into the Santa Clara Valley, and some of the valleys close to napa and sonoma, were keeping a close eye on those areas too. This heat is going to pack its punch as we head into the next couple of days and were already starting to feel it right now. And heading into this afternoon i should say. Upper 70s near San Francisco and 80s all the way up into wine country today. And all the way off into the east bay, some areas like antioch and concord could potentially hit the 90s as early as tomorrow. Once we head down into the Santa Clara Valley, were definitely going to feel upper 80s tomorrow too. But today, were kind of gradually warming up till that point. Low 80s in the forecast near san jose. A live look behind us in san jose. A few clouds in the forecast and that will clear up this afternoon with plenty of sunshine in store. Jess, thank you. If youre getting ready to head out the door this morning and look at that. That bay bridge ride certainly getting busy this morning. For folks working their way over into San Francisco. So its about that time where you want to grab that coffee and hop in the car and get going. So you dont get stuck in all this mess for too long. No crashes. Thats good news. Not bad at the san mateo bridge. Thats looking a lot better through there. Over at 880, at least the portion in oakland, near the coliseum is moving along beautifully in both directions. In fact, theres not a lot of cars through there. Its really south of there where things starting to get a little bit slow as you approach 92 or even just past that point. I if you are taking south 880 but actually doing pretty good for the most part on the roadways. Time now for a look at this mornings other top stories. Some of the employees who work there say it got so bad, they just left their jobs. They walked off. So a warning if you have a phobia about rats some of the images here might be disturbing. So take a look at this video here behind me. It came from the cal osha complaint. You can see the rats scurrying all around the establishment and in fact they took images of the animals there and yesterday a group of workers picketed outside that franchise mcdonalds over on jackson. Meanwhile the Health Department shut the restaurant down last week and lauren toms explains that the employees say before they go back to work, they want some assurances. [ chanting ] reporter most days, Oscar Ramirez is serving customers at this Mcdonalds Drivethru in oakland. But today, hes taping notices on that same facility, demanding change after he and other employees say a rat infestation has caused unhealthy conditions for employees and customers. I feel embarrassed. But what we can do, we cant do anything. Reporter for nearly a year, oscar says hes been ashamed to call attention to conditions inside this location on the corner of 14th and jackson that has been temporarily closed by the Health Department. Scurrying feet, feces and urine, an indescribable stench of decaying rodents are some of the scenes hes lived through just to earn a living. There are some containers where they put the sauces and sometimes the rat get into the containers. Sometimes you are going to get like a sauce and the rat come out. Reporter ramirez, along with five other workers from this mcdonalds, have declared a strike until the conditions are professionally cleaned. Angelica garcia works in the prep kitchen. She says alongside rodents darting between appliances. [ speaking in a global language ] its a rat problem, has progressed since i started my job here. Weve seen dead rats, the smell is terrible. The odor from their feces and urine. Its gotten us to this point where were now speaking up. Reporter in a complaint letter to osha, angelica stated quote, i see rats in the kitchen every day. I see rats at the grill where we make the hamburgers and i have seen rats nibbling on pieces of bacon or hamburgers that are ready to be sent to customers. In the complaint are images of rats on what looks like kitchen equipment, including one rat that appears to be dead and surrounded by blood. The Employee Union also released video of rats scurrying across the kitchen. The workers are demanding a professional cleaning and want to be paid until the issue is resolved. We reached out to mcdonalds on friday who gave us a statement from the locations Owner Operator that said its very important to me as a Small Business owner in oakland that my employees have a safe place to come to work. When we became aware of the issue, we immediately contacted pest control and continued to work with them to address. Oscar says he wants to return to work, but has been scarred by what hes seen inside. For now, hes hopeful the workers voices will finally be heard. So we reached out to mcdonalds again by email with more questions about the allegations from workers. But we have not heard back as of this morning. Gianna . Its 6 09. Coming up the future of selfdriving cars on display in the east bay. Details on groundbreaking new transit experiment that will connect communities. Hey, know a nurse, thank a nurse. Make that your mantra for the morning. Your community station celebrating people building bridges for people seeing and celebrating nurses in our communities building bridges to wellness this morning. Its our pleasure to do this. Its National Nurses week and Shawn Chitnis has the story of one woman in the east bay who says despite the challenges, nurses face, shes excited to help those in her community who need her the most. Hello, my name is elina and im going to be your nurse today. Reporter elina limon is in her final year as Nursing Student at cal state east bay. Its easy to see shes ready to get started and take care of patients as she demonstrates a standard full body assessment in one of their labs. Its been really fun. And i feel like i have developed a lot of new skills and have grown both as a nurse and as a person during my time here. Reporter elina is a first generation student who says her mexican heritage informs the kind of work she wants to do in health care. She says theres a disconnect between immigrant families and medical providers. Its always been a very big goal of mine to act as a bridge between my community and, you know, health care. Reporter her education began during the pandemic. A moment that made her think hard about the profession she was pursuing, but also motivated her to keep going. I think that the covid19 pandemic really brought to light a lot of the inequities that are found in nursing. Reporter one of her passions as a Nursing Student is to work towards social justice. To elina, that means addressing the setbacks people without access to healthy food and good medical care face when they show up as patients. My vision for myself, id really like to work with more vulnerable populations. So children specifically is what i feel very inclined to work around. Reporter but she knows that since the pandemic, nursing shortages and Health Care Workers dealing with burnout are two likely scenarios in her own career. We do really emphasize that selfcare portion. You cant help other people unless you help yourself first. Reporter so she hopes more resources will be given to take in larger classes of Nursing Students in the future. But before then, she looks forward to graduating with gratitude for all who helped her get here. I have met a bunch of brilliant nurses throughout my clinical rotations and im very grateful for what they do and im happy that im going to be joining them soon. And we are very grateful for what you are going to do as well. Now taking a live look outside on this wednesday morning. I love saying were halfway through the workweek because its very exciting to know the weekend is right around the corner. This is beautiful. Look at the version of the skyline and then you can kind of see why that reflection you can see that off of Salesforce Tower. Its because of this. Here. The sun is coming up over the bay and look at that. Oh, thats so pretty. Jess i want to just stare at that all day. I need that picture on the wall. More of that every single day this week. So get out there and enjoy the sunrise and enjoy the sunsets too. Its been beautiful this week. And it has been a warm week for us here in the bay were going to continue to warm up all throughout the bay area. Heading into the next couple of days as offshore winds start to really develop throughout this morning and lasting into this afternoon. Were also seeing High Pressure move just close to us to the point where were seeing daytime highs jump well above average. Well get to the temperatures in a second and and lets start off with the winds though. A wind advisory in effect for the friends near Solano County and napa and Sonoma County too. Just in the valleys though in those areas where we can see wind speeds anywhere up to around 30, 40 Miles Per Hour this afternoon. Were going to continue to watch the wind adopt through the next couple of hours. That wind advisory expires at 11 00 a. M. But still breezy past that too. 10 00 fairfield up to 40mileperhour winds there. And these are coming in from the north to the south. So inland areas, to our coastline, meaning that higher elevated setup to the lower elevated setup is allowing for the air to stay really dry and brisk and evening hours tonight that air will continue to stay very, very dry. Relative humidity drops down to around 10 heading into this afternoon. Lets actually dive straight into our forecast for us for our daytime highs today. The sun is starting to rise and were going to warm up a lot throughout the bay area. Upper 70s expected today near San Francisco and thats about a ten degree jump compared to just yesterday. And were seeing that trend widespread throughout the bay area. Upper 70s near napa and 80s already off near antioch and this is only the middle step. Continue to warm up even more in the forecast tomorrow. So with that in mind lets take a quick look at our next seven days. Lots of sunshine in store for us still windy conditions and to add to that were going to warm up in the upper 80s tomorrow lasting into our friday forecast. Similar trend into saturday and then we slowly start to cool down into early next week. Thats the inland areas though. Closer to San Francisco parts or oakland parts of the bay, well, hold on tight to the 80s tomorrow and today but then we drop in the 70s this weekend with partly cloudy skies and a similar trend into next week with 60s returning as early as sunday. G . Sounds good. Lets talk about the drive to work this morning. Or maybe to school or maybe you are just getting up and at them and getting out the door early to try to enjoy a little bit of the wednesday. And its going to be nice. So thats good to hear. Not so great though is the ride into San Francisco with the metering lights on. You can kind of see it sort of sets the tone of the morning drive. Similar story here at the richmondsan rafael bridge. Theres no metering lights but it is a slow crawl for folks heading near the toll plaza. Thats a pretty busy commute to the marin side. All right, we are getting word of some b. A. R. T. Delays also this morning. As you head through San Francisco and maybe towards sfo. About 20 minute delays on that San Francisco airport line. So check that schedule before you head out the door. Muni, capital corridor, a. C. E. Rail all looking pretty good. The bay area bridges this morning. And think about what your commute might look like in five years. If you live in any of the bay area suburbs selfdriving transit cars might be a part of the vision. Its closer than you think. Right now nearly 300,000 people live in eastern contra costa county. That means a lot of traffic along some of the busier areas like highway 4 and its only expected to get worse. But now we have a glimpse at a groundbreaking new transit experiment a Company Called glide cars building 28 miles of enclosed roadways for their zero emission autonomous lek trek vehicles so these podlike cars there can fit up to four people. The company will have 56 pickup points stretching from brentwood and it will travel through oakley and antioch and end in pit burg. We have designed it so the drivers experience is fantastic and that will mean we start reversing this trend that is there today of declining mass transit tradition. Well, glide cars hopes this new program will increase transit accessibility while reducing emissions and traffic congestion. Now the first section between brentwood and antioch is expected to be finished by 2027. A similar project is under way by the same company in san jose. Time right now 6 19 in the morning. For the community, by the community. And your community station cbs news bay area. Partnering with oaklands newest ball team and the dream to keep baseball where it belongs in the east bay. How about a live look outside and lets check in with our friends. This is pier 39. Hey. Theyre up early this morning. All those sea lions saying hi, bay area. Were here. Even got a little glimpse of i was like shaking you know, i was so scared. When i first reached out to jacoby and meyers. I didnt know if i had a case or not. If i know of any accident, im like, call jacoby and meyers, theyll help you. We were first to bring you news of the Exciting New Partnership with the oakland ballers and will be airing the ballers friday home games on pix . Crews have been shaping upraimondi park in west oakland to make sure its ready to go. Our Wilson Walker got a closer look at what it takes to build a Baseball Team from scratch and how the community will benefit from the ballers presence. You know, the hardest stuff that we had to do when we started this about a month ago was getting the fields done. As you can see, the field is almost entirely done and now weve got some time to let it seed. Reporter from the outfield grass to the infield dirt, baseball is taking root in west oakland. Again. So many little parts to do a ballpark. Right now, this is the guardrail for the dugout. Reporter and for ballers cofounder paul freedman, seeing the vision become reality has to happen in a hurry. Final approval for the buildout came just last week. So just about everything you see here has been done in a matter of days. The folks that were partnered with for the bleachers have done this before. This is a Company Called inproduction. Theyre the company that turned all of las vegas into an f1 race. For them, putting together a 4,000 seat, you know, ballpark in a month, you know, they feel like they got plenty of time. Reporter for the ballers, however, the task is an enormous one with just over four weeks to pull everything together. You know, we dont have a lot of extra time for unforeseen things to come up. So we just got to keep chopping away and make sure june 4th is a success. Which is 28 days away. Reporter in his words, its warp speed on every level and thats not just the ballpark itself. The city has committed to resurfacing nearby roadways and if you are familiar with the area, you know that some of them were nearly impassable in recent years. But oakland is now paving a way on surrounding streets and sidewalks. This project proves that oakland can get stuff done and can get stuff done you know, faster than anybody expected. Raimondi park has a lot of history. The raimondi brothers and some of the greats that have played down here, lee lacey. Frank robinson. Jesse gunder. Got it. Reporter roddell harrison was born and raised in the neighborhood and she says the ballers aryal is great news for an area that has the faced tremendous challenges. On one end of the park is wood street which just two years ago, was home to one of the largest homeless encampments on the west coast. Well, now Affordable Housing is rising on that site just as the park is redeveloped for the ballers and for harrison this is a good positive step for especially this community. Seems like its been neglected and hopefully oakland ballers will be a real success here in west oakland. Yeah, i mean, this is a historic community. This is a historic park. Its a park that saw some tough times recently. But we think that the best times for this park for this community, are in front of us. Reporter so the transformation reaches beyond the park and beyond baseball. But it has to happen fast and for freedman, that means staying focused on every detail and trying not to think about that first pitch. You know, i cant let myself start to think about baseball happening because then i get a little bit emotional. [ laughter ] i start to get a little bit excited but i will tell you, that first opening day when the first lets go oakland chant starts to break out, i dont know how im going to start stop from crying. Like its going to be a very emotional event and i think its going to be very energetic and i think people are going to want to be here. I can hear it. Lets go oakland. I can hear it. All right, and heres a look at the broadcast schedule. You can watch the ballers first game on pix on friday, june 7th at 6 30 p. M. The season wraps up friday, august 30th. Sunshine and wind and jessica, is this going to be a word soup today . Or is it going to be weather soup . You know, im going to finish the poem and not going to be as you know, beautiful as we were trying to make it out to be but sunshine and winds and then a little bit of a heat risk. And then on top of that, a wind advisory too. Thats kind of our weather headlines as we wake up and head out the door this morning. As we head out the door this morning, some of the biggest concerns for us is the fact that we are warming up a lot right around the corner. I dont know why thats glitching but behind it this we go. This is what i want to talk about. Low relative humidity and warm temperatures. Thats what were expecting as we head into the forecast for us this week. Fire danger, its not too high but a big concern for us is our inland areas under a moderate heat risk especially in areas like concord and all the way over into antioch and down into the Santa Clara Valley as we head into our forecast tomorrow. Were going to notice that warmth today but cranks up even more in the forecast tomorrow as High Pressure ridges over us. To add to that were also dealing with some winds moving offshore so wind speeds anywhere up to around 45 Miles Per Hour. Expected in that ma and sonoma and all the way off into the areas like Solano County too. Were going to keep a close eye on the winds right now as we get reports were seeing wind speeds anywhere up to around 45, 40 Miles Per Hour and areas like fairfield all the way over into napa and its going to stay pretty breezy as we head into the next couple of hours. This is into the 10 00 hour. Those winds diving in from the north continuing to push all the way offshore. Into the afternoon hours today. And thats coming in from the sacramento valley. But heres what its looking like for us today. 70s and 80s in the forecast with plenty of sunshine in store all throughout the bay today. Were expecting 80s near concord and 70s into San Francisco. Upper 60s and lower 70s along our coastline throughout this afternoon. Well continue to keep a close eye on the temperatures through the next couple of days getting closer to the weekend. For now over to you, g. Thank you. Taking a look at the roadways right now as we see things getting busier now closer to the 7 00 hour. Thats our busiest time for the morning commute. But right now 6 30, bay bridge toll plaza, slow ride as you head into San Francisco this morning. Little hard to make out how far the backup is. You have got the sun sort of just glaring through there. But on the sensors, looks as far back as to the maze with that westbound 80 ride being the approach. Lot of brake lights heading towards the richmondsan rafael bridge this morning. Thats certainly pretty slow and go. Hey, just got the update from b. A. R. T. Theyre back on time. So good news there. Still college the schedule before you head out the door, dealing with some delays on the sfo line but theyre good to go as most of the mass transit agencies are this morning. Knew knee, vta, caltrain all checking with no delays or issues as well as our ferries. Reed . All right, well, i bet you never thought youd see this. A former adult film star testifying against a former u. S. President in a criminal trial. Were talking of course about the hush money trial against donald trump. With Stormy Daniels testifying for the prosecution. So despite objections from trumps defense team, daniels testified for hours about trumps alleged 2006 sexual encounter with her something trump denies. Trumps lawyers argued the jury should focus on the documents and called for a mistrial. But the judge denied that request. The case continues with buildup to the testimony of trumps former fixer this chief michael cohen. That is not the former president s only legal battle. But he did get some good news in the florida classified documents case. Trial was set for may. But yesterday, judge cannon canceled the trial and did not set a new date. She says she needs more information before the case can go forward. So this means the trial could happen just before or even potentially after the president ial election. This is really interesting because this pause in this particular case comes not long after the u. S. Supreme court also hit pause on the question on president ial immunity with the decision not expected until july on that matter. Okay. To the east bay, police need your help this morning. Reporter the themes focused on this year include burnout, risk management, and of course the rapid developments around ai. Casey believes with such innovation happening quickly, its important to make room for prioritizing security efforts. You know, the speed of progress in general is the biggest kind of threat across all sectors at this point in time. Theres such a pressure to innovate and get new technology out into the market. And, you know, haste is kind of the natural enemy of making good decisions that reduce risk. Reporter and speaking of risk, linda graymartin, the svp of the conference, says that despite chatter around the safety of the bay area and conversations around new possible locations, she feels confident that San Francisco continues to be the sacred and secure location for the annual gathering. You know, weve been in San Francisco for the past 33 years and we often say its in our dna. I mean, its really a great location for us. Its in the heart of Silicon Valley and its in the heart of the technology industry. Reporter and casey agrees. For the first time in its history the organization has announced its changing its name to scouting america. Its part of a commitment to being more welcoming and inclusive. A decade ago the boy scouts lifted a ban on gay cutes and five years ago they let girls in. Amanda h ari spoke with a female scout whos been an early part of that change here in the bay area. I have like 43 merit badges total. Reporter a boy scout sash completely filled with merit badges. But this sash belongs to a young lady, 17yearold sydney yi. Yi started with the boy scouts of america, or bsa, back when she was 12 in 2019, shortly after the organization allowed girls to join. She found out through her neighborhood troop. Yi says initially, she was one of the only girls. When i joined, there was obviously a bigger ratio of boys to girls. But as the years have gone on, like our girls troop has expanded and theyre almost like equal amount of people in them. Reporter she says shes even recruited some of her friends and she likes the rebranding. Scouting america. And thinks the new name could attract different people. I believe its more inclusive. Reporter in her five years with the organization, she has already achieved the high status of eagle scout. The eagle scout neckerchief slide and many of her patches have the word boy on them. She says she wanted to be a scout because she likes the outdoors and enjoys learning about camping, hiking and boating among other skills. And teaches you like good life lessons, but it teaches you a lot of like life skills and like survival skills which i think is good for more females to get introduced to and for more to know. Reporter scout executive of the bsa golden gate area council, mike hale, says hes been waiting for this change. It was a little awkward still being the boy scouts. Reporter hale says since 2018, the number of girls that are a part of the organization continue to grow. At least in our council, 20 of our membership are now girls and young ladies, so it just made a lot of sense for us and then that nationally its about the same. Reporter he says at first, the majority of the girls who joined already had brothers who were part of it. But now girls are joining on their own. Yi does not have a brother in boy scouts. She says there are times shes the only girl at certain bsa activities. But shes learned to embrace it. Im representing like girls and maybe inspiring other girls to also partake in these activities. Reporter the name change will officially go into effect on february 8th, 2025, the organizations 115th anniversary. More than a million young people are currently enrolled in the boy scouts of america with over 176,000 being girls and young women. Reed . All right, g. Thanks so much. Time right now 6 40. U. S. A live look outside on this wednesday morning. Were climbing to the top of Salesforce Tower looking down on alcatraz. And beyond up into the north bay. Good morning to everyone. Especially if you are on one of the ferries crossing the bay. Parts of Northern California are expected to reach 90 degrees today and jess, were actually hearing that cal fire is helping homeowners make sure theyre ready for fire danger. Were come coming up on that time of year now. I know, absolutely reed and its interesting. Governor gavin newsom declared this week wildfire preparedness week in californiament cal fire says in recent years, more than 60,000 homes have been destroyed by statewide fires. Take a look. To help demonstrate the dangers cal fire actually simulated wildfires on two types of homes. And only the wildfire ready home actually survived. They say doing simple things like pulling back bark or mulch about five feet can help keep your home safe. Removing any dead or dying vegetation, 100 feet from the home. Whether thats dead weeds, whether thats leaves that have accumulated or pine needles accumulated on the ground or on the roof. Is step one. Creating an ember resistant zone. And cal fire also wants you to remember the six ps when it comes to safety. People, pets, plastics like credit cards and prescriptions, phone numbers, and of course papers like deeds and certificates. Now lets change gears real fast because as we head in the next couple of days were going to warm up and dry up a lot. And were noticing that today already. Daytime highs this afternoon theyre going to be topping off in the 80s near san jose and upper 70s near los gatos. Warming up about ten degrees from yesterday just along the peninsula. 79 in San Francisco. And speaking of San Francisco real fast, take a look at this. Daytime highs are going to continue to warm up more as we head into the next couple of days. We have heat really, really building throughout our inland areas too. To the point where were under a moderate heat risk. Tomorrow lasting into friday. But this is what its going to look like for us tomorrow into San Francisco. Upper 70s close to the 80s for the thursday setup and a similar trend for the inland areas like san jose. Topping off close to around 86 degrees tomorrow. It is going to be a warm one for us here in the bay area. And as we take a quick look at what we can expect allthroughout the bay, well, were going to continue to see that heat last into this weekend too. So im going to drop in map real fast and were going to talk about the next seven days. In the inland areas spots like concord and antioch and all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley for that matter, daytime highs are going to continue to warm up. We deal with really gusty conditions at times and wind speeds anywhere up to around 45 Miles Per Hour today. In Solano County all the way up into the north bay too. To add to that were holding on tight to the 80s until saturday or upper 80s until saturday. At that point, that High Pressure system starts to pull back and well see some partly cloudy skies into early next week. With low 80s in sight for us in areas like the east bay all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley. But closer to the bay shoreline, oakland, San Francisco, daly city for that matter, were holding on tight to the 80s today and tomorrow. But then well quickly jump down to the 70s friday into saturday. Partly cloudy skies return along the peninsula and especially along that coastline with some breezy conditions lasting into next week. And well see foggy conditions in the morning a little bit of that mix of sun and clouds into the afternoon hours as we head into monday and tuesday of next week. Gianna . Jess, thank you. Lets talk about the roadways right now. Couple of things to look out for. First off, if you are working your way along some of the east bay routes starting to slow down a little bit more than what weve seen the last 30 minutes. Especially south 880. South 680. And if you are headed out of the south bay and northbound 101 through san jose. Lets talk about westbound 80 though couple of things here. If you are traveling out of hercules. San pablo. Richmond, things are backing up through there. In fact stays slow into berkeley. That will affect the drive on the richmondsan rafael bridge. Theres a water main break on main actually on carlson boulevard right at 47th street. So there are some closures in and around that area. If you typically travel through there for your morning, just a headsup. And a lot of water on the roadways through there. Well see if we can get you a live look coming up in just a bit. Richmondsan rafael bridge, thats a busy ride westbound working your way to the marin side of things and a live look at 80 westbound heading towards the bay bridge. This is not too bad actually. Not too far from that berkeley area. Traffic is actually moving decently through there. Once you get to the bridge though you will be tapping the brake lights westbound as you head into San Francisco. So do plan for that. And a busy ride across the san mateo bridge as well. Well, every morning we show you great views of San Francisco and the bay from our cameras on top of the mark. Like this one right here. Mark hop tins hotel and when it comes to views its really hard to beat the top of the mark. Hey, listen to that. Top of the mark celebrated its 85th anniversary yesterday. They marked the occasion with a live band and great drinks and great vibes. It was in 1939 when top of the mark became San Franciscos very first rooftop bar. Very bold idea. Nobody had done it before in the city and he wanted to do it he was scared of two things. The name and that people wouldnt tell the elevator up. And get this. 75 years ago, kpix began broadcasting from the attic above the famous bar. Becoming the very first tv station right here in Northern California. We love the squadron bottles. Go to the top of the mark to see some really touching things people wrote the letters the sailors and soldiers. Theyre still there a beautiful thing. 6 53.
