San franciscos west portal neighborhood gets even worse as another member of a family hit by speeding suv dies in the hospital tonight. You just want to hug your kids closer and really be mindful of every single moment you have with each other. Then after months of pressure, San Francisco police agree to release security footage of a violent attack against a 71yearold asian woman as advocates call for hate crime charges. And the new tech that thieves are using to steal a very specific model of car in the bay area. Good evening. Im brian hackney. Im andrea nakano. Lets get straight to that breaking news out of pleasanton tonight. Crews are on the scene of a fire burning at Amador Valley high school. This all started within the last few hours. This is video sent to us by someone sanding across the street. You can see the smoke and a number of fire engines and trucks on the scene. Officials are asking people to avoid the area. In this video posted to x, fire and smoke pouring out of one of the buildings on campus. Firefighters on the scene knocked the blaze down. There is no word so far on how the fire got started. More video of the aftermath as locals came out to have a look. The district has said the fire probably will not impact classes tomorrow. Now to our other big story tonight, news that a third victim from yesterdays horrific crash has died. Family and friends telling our da lin the family was headed to the dew at the time of the crash to celebrate the parents wedding anniversary. Reporter there are two makeshift memorials on yaloa street, the main one at the bus stop and a smaller memorial about 60 feet away. The crash happened over there, but the impact sent the toddler flying. He landed and died right here. Witnesses, neighbors, and well wishers dropped off flowers, stuffed animals, and toys at the bus stop. Safety advocates left a white stroller and three pairs of shoes, one for each victim that died in the crash. Johannademayuga was one of many that came to pay her respects. She lives across the street from the bus stop. She ran out when she heard the crash on saturday. Its very heartbreaking, very difficult for us to unsee what we saw here yesterday. Im still shaking just thinking about it. Reporter she had a hard time sleeping, thinking about the toddler who was in a stroller thrown about 60 feet away from the bus stop. But the stoler was clearly destroyed, yeah. So he was still strapped in there. Reporter the father landed about 70 to 80 feet away from the point of impact. Witnesses say both victims were covered in blood and died at the scene. Paramedics rushed the mom and a baby to the hospital. Authorities say the mom died from her injuries. The infant is still suffering from life threatening injuries. You just want to hug your kids closer and just really be mindful of every single moment you have with each other. Reporter the victims Close Friends declined an oncamera interview but shared the father is diego, 40 years other, mother matugu, 38 years old, the toddler about 1 1 2 years old and the infant about 2 months old, both boys. Friends say the family lives in the mission district. Saturday was diego and matugus wedding anniversary, so they decided to take the bus to celebrate the anniversary with the boys at the San Francisco zoo. How a car can be racing that fast and take out an entire bus stop. Reporter thats what police are investigating. Some witnesses believe the elderly driver of the White Mercedes suv suffered from some kind of medical condition. Police cannot confirm that. Witnesses say she was going between 50 and 70 Miles Per Hour in the wrong direction. No signs of braking and no skid marks on the street. Saddened, disturbed and disheartened and we wanted to pay our respects. We brought five lillies in memory of the people that died or are injured. I really pray for the family and everyone affected. Reporter johanna and many neighbors are praying the baby will survive and receive a lot of support. I am just like unable to move forward. I need to have closure with what i saw. I cant really unsee the carnage that happened here yesterday. Reporter friends say diego was originally from brazil. His family is flying to the u. S. Matugu, the wife, was from portugal, her familiar also flying to the bay area. As for the elderly driver, shes in stable condition. Its unclear if shell face any charges. Street Safety Advocates will hold a vigil tomorrow at 5 00 at the site of the crash and all San Francisco police have said about the accident is they dont think Traffic Engineering was a factor in the case. The San FranciscoPolice Department is promising to release video from a case last year they reopened last week amid pressure from asian activist groups. The Asian Justice Movement released a statement saying, we demand Immediate Release of the video showing the fatal attack and that the San Francisco police reopen the case as a Homicide Investigation and potential hate crime. Mayor london breed said she also wants the video released after talking with community leaders. Yam fhan wu was found bleeding on the ground in the Bayview District last july. Police initially determined it was an accident, but the fm standard reports the woman accused of pushing her was arrested last week for allegedly assaulting another elderly chinese woman which made police want to relook at the circumstances surrounding the first incident. Chief bill scott tweeted, the sfpd does not tolerate violence against our Aapi Community and take these cases very seriously. This death is a tragedy. The sfpd will release the video in this case as mayor breed requested after the investigation is complete. In other news, a warning tonight for chevy camaro owners, police say thieves are using key cloning devices to steal that particular kind of car. Max darrow has the story. San francisco and los angeles pd both report an uptick in camaro thefts. A consumer watchdog says individuals should take extra steps to protect themselves and action is needed higher up to make sure consumers are better protected. Chevy camaros high on car thieves radars right now in northern and southern california. Heres a look at sfpds numbers. 21 camaro thefts were reported in 2022, 46 in 2023, and through the first 2 1 2 months this year 15 camaro thefts. In los angeles the problem is even more prevalent. Around this time last year lapd reported seven camaros stolen. This year 90 so far. Lapd Sergeant Arnold castellanos tells our team police often find many of these stolen camaros at illegal street takeovers or the thieves try and resell the camaros. Quite often find them where theyre actually turning around and posting them on social media to sell them, 40, 50, 60,000 car selling it for 3,000. Many consumers have heard of the increase in key fob cloning and the thefts of other kinds of vehicles. Carmen balber is the executive director of consumer watchdog, a group dedicated to safeguard withing the interests and rights of california consumers. We have seen this problem with other cars impact consumers ability to get auto insurance. She says insurance companies, however, cant just increase prices overnight. They have to go to the insurance commissioner, prove that these thefts have, in fact, caused increased losses and get approval for any price increases. Castellanos advice to camaro owners. Specifically if its something near and dear to your heart, install some kind of kill switch and some other gps tracker or products like lojack or onstar. Those are good products that help us find the vehicles. Balber says this should be a wakeup call to manufacturers as well. We can tell individual consumers, oh, theres a flaw with your car. These are ways to try and protect your car from being stolen, but what we need is action higher up at the manufacturer level to make sure that it isnt so easy to clone those fobs to begin with. Its not just the big cities in california that are keeping an eye out on this. The city of rohnert park recently warned the community there to be aware of this issue. Last year oakland had a Record Number of car thefts, almost 15,000. That amounts to about 40 stolen cars a day. So far cars are being stolen at a slower rate this year, 2,400 at this point, not as many as the same time in 2023. In San Francisco there have been about 1,100 car thefts to date, about the same as last year. Still ahead tonight at 11 00, the bracket is set for this years ncaa mens basketball tournament with st. Marys ready to make a run. Well have a look at their first matchup in the madness. And later what better place to celebrate st. Patricks day than in dublin, either in the old country or right here in the bay area. And coming up in the forecast, we arent done with the mid70s for daytime highs. Well talk about that. Then well talk about the rain coming back by the end of the week, but the first thing we need to discuss is the fog tomorrow. Well put visibility numbers on here. Ill show you how low its going to be for your part of the bay. You might want extra time on the road monday morning. Ill see you with that coming up in a few minutes. Morikawa on 18. He is really boxed in here. Not a good spot. Off the comcast business van. Into the vending area. Oh, not the fries wheres the ball . Anybody see it . Oh wait, there it is back into play and. Aw no, its in the water. Wait a minute. Are you kidding me . You got to be kidding me. Rolling towards the cup, and its in the hole what an impossible shot brought to you by comcast business. Some good news for the morning commute in the east bay, 680 in pleasanton will be open by 4 00 tomorrow morning according to caltrans. The southbound lanes between the 580 connector to koopman road have been closed all weekend. Caltrans says the inconvenience was worth it. They managed to do 40 nights worth of work over the last two plus days. Thats good. They had dry conditions, which is the reason they had to delay the work till this point, but these dry conditions, these idyllic weather days that weve been having, are ending according to that man. Its not till the end of the week, brian. Well get sunny and low 70s the next couple days. Its sticking around a bit, but yeah, its coming to an end friday. Before that tomorrow morning its going to be foggy. Pick out your part of the bay. What youre looking at in addition to the visualization where the fog will be, it will be patchy and on again, off again. Look for the visibility numbers. Look at San Franciscos number. If you get below 0. 5, thats a forecast reading that tells you for your part of the bay, visibility on the road will be less than a half mile. If youre 1. 0, you can see down the road a mile. Look at the north bay. Thats where well likely encounter some of the thickest fox, but its not the only place. National Weather Service has not issued a dense fog advisory tomorrow, but its going to be out there. Plan ahead. Give yourself a little extra time on the road tomorrow. Well clear away the fog now. It probably will stick around until about 10 00 a. M. Thats what it looked like this morning, beautiful time lapse from the mark hopkins hotel. We woke up with some of the may gray stuff, but it wasnt terribly widespread. Tomorrow will be more and then sunny and mid70s the rest of monday. Lets talk about the change. Ill show you how much longer the 70s stick around in a second. I need to show you where the storms coming from. We need to pick this apart because its starting to look more impressive now than even just yesterday. When you look at the way its kind of shaped, its got a long tail of moisture going down to the subtropics and a strong area of low pressure with cold air. This is a good storm in terms of having all the necessary ingredients for widespread rain and good snow in the sierra, both of them coming. Thats friday. We wont get too specific at this point. Im not putting time stamps on there. Were just generically looking at days. Friday likely is some of the more noticeable impacts from this from the rain, widespread steady, leftover showers saturday and by sunday it will clear out. If we look at rainfall totals for the threeday period, about 1 1 2 inches. Its not terrible. Were not concerned about flooding from this, but its going to be widespread steady rain. Were going right back into that friday particularly and saturday and sunday. The other model the numbers maybe arent as big, but theyre about twice as big as they were yesterday. This is the one thats been more conservative. Theyre starting to come into more alignment. This storm will produce another 2 or 3 feet of snow in the sierra friday going into saturday. Its certainly going to change around here as we get towards friday into next week. Lets put this into a sevenday forecast. Well start out with our inland microclimate. Youre still in the low to mid70s couple days. After the break well head to dublin, the one in ireland and the one in california, for some st. Patricks Day Celebrations when we come back. The ncaa tournament is about to drop, but not without two bay area teams. Were just getting started. Come along for the ride. You cant have march madness without breaking down the brackets. St. Marys will go a long way in the tournament. And bay area soccer history for the bay fc franchise. You know we got a lot more than that. Its all coming up on gameday at 11 30. upbeat music this is the new pix with the only 8 00 and 9 00 pm news, the primetime edition weeknights on the new pix . 44 cable 12. bell chiming celebrations around the world today for st. Patricks day, extravagant parades in boston and tokyo and, of course, nowhere more festive than in irelands capital city, dublin. Celebrations happening in the bay area dublin as well today. John ramos reports its nothing like the real st. Patrick would have expected because they didnt do this kind of thing 1,600 years ago. Heres john. Reporter every year thousands of people come to dublin to celebrate a piece of celtic history it turns out very few people know anything about. I think its awesome. Its a weekend a year everybody in dublin becomes irish. Reporter its st. Patricks day in dublin which looks a lot like a county fair except the kettle corn is green and visitors must search through their clothing to find anything that looks even remotely green in color. The greens not a color that i wear typically. So its a little i have to search for Something Like a custom 49ers green tshirt. I think the dressing up makes it like the part that is part of the holiday. Thats what makes the holiday. Reporter Jeff Campbell is 50 irish which makes him about 100 more than most of the festivalgoers. Hes been to the old country and says they arent sure what to make of americas st. Patricks day traditions. I think most of them shake their heads just like whats up with them . Reporter they dont understand this . No. They dont quite understand it, right. Reporter but thats okay because the irish see themselves as a fun loving people, always looking for any reason to celebrate. Its known as the irish outlook on life, but it should be everybodys outlook on life. Reporter but a young video blogger named daze who was Live Streaming the festival admitted it does seem like a peculiar holiday. Ill be honest. I dont know much about st. Patrick. All i know, hes irish, probably had a nice big beard. I cant grow one. I envy that guy. Reporter it turns out the patron saint of ireland wasnt irish at all. He was abducted at a young age from romancontrolled britain and taken to ireland as a slave. He escaped but later returned as a priest to convert the masses to christianity, so the church made him a saint and even suspended the lenten ban on alcohol during his feast day. That may be why drinking has always been part of the holidays tradition. Okay. That makes sense. Hey, celebrate the catholic saint, right, with a beer, with more than one probably. Reporter and the city of dublin wouldnt have it any other way. After 40 years of doing this, i mean its become a staple. This is a signature event for the city of dublin and so we cannot not celebrate st. Patricks day. Reporter it all makes sense to us, even if the people in ireland dont quite know what to make of it. Another annual tradition at the Hiller Aviation Museum on the peninsula. Check out this green clad man or perhaps a leprechaun descending from the sky. No pot of gold at the end of that particular flight, seems like yet another variation of the celebration of st. Patricks day. Coming up after the break, the hitech car feature that is getting negative reviews from safety regulators. Well be right back. More and more new cars are equipped with semi automated driving systems, but new testing shows they arent doing enough to insure people are paying attention to the road when the system is engaged. It can be very dangerous. They are not selfdriving vehicles. So you see people who either intentionally or unintentionally misuse these systems and get themselves into trouble. The biggest things that need to change are improvements in monitoring both the head, the eyes as well as the hands to make sure youre ready to take control of the vehicle. In a statement the trade Group RepresentingAutomakers Says the systems help reduce roadway crashes and injuries and that drivers should always be alert and attentive when using them. Even though those selfdriving vehicles are only operating in a handful of cities across the country, including here in San Francisco, most drivers are still skeptical. According to a new aaa survey, 66 of drivers expressed fear about fully selfdriving vehicles, but a majority of surveyed drivers say they are open to at least some kind of driver assistance system. Its not a surprise that americans have fear about fully autonomous selfdriving vehicles. You hear about these collisions involving a fully autonomous vehicle. Theyre highly publicized. It just caused people to be very concerned about that type of technology. Its something new. Most people have not ridden in a fully selfdriving vehicle. Aaa says they are working with automakers to educate consumers and build drivers confidence in the cars of the future. Coming up after the break, a big takeaway from selection sunday, including when the bay areas only team will hit the court. Business. Its not a ninetofive proposition. Its all day and into the night.
