35th avenue has been robbed four times since november. The owners of the franchise have decided enough is enough. Reporter a few weeks ago when robbers used a pick up truck and cable to steal a safe from the taco bell at 35th and mcarthur. Of the four robberies two occurred while they were open for business. Kimberly works on the metro wireless store across the street. They pull up out of nowhere. They are not just robbing the store they rob everyone in there as well. It is not as safe as it used to be a. I lot of crime now. Reporter with that in mind, the owner of the franchise, diversified restaurant group, closed the dining rooms at all four of the taco bells in oakland including this one. That leaves a taco bell on telegraph, owned by another company as the only place people can eat indoors. And that restaurant has gone cashless to try to prevent robberies. It is sad it got to the point where they can not even allow peopled in because they get robbed. Reporter drg would not comment today but Taco Bell Corporation issued a statement saying quote the Franchise Owner and operator informed us they are consistently evaluating and working to ensure a safe environment by implementing procedures such as closing dining rooms and hiring security guards and they have taken extra measures to meet with local Law Enforcement. End quote. Now, service is only provided through the drive upwindo. A problem for a woman named miss joe who does not have a car and had to ask a friend to drive her to get the lunch. I dont think it is cool. It is annoying what do you think about them closing the dining rooms saying we are too afraid. They should be afraid. True. But i feel bad for the patrons, you know what i am saying. Reporter as annoying as it might be most of them see how sad it is how bad things have gotten. It breaks my heart. Why . Because i want someone to protect the citizens. You can not enjoy your meal in the comfort of the place you bought your meal in. So, it is like them closing it down due to all of the crime rates and everything. You know, i dont know, honestly. It is just, what is this oakland coming to . Everything is just getting worse. Things are closing down. You know, it is just terrible. Reporter it is not a new problem but it is a problem that appears to be getting worse every day. So at least for now there are no plans to shut the restaurants completely. Taco bell is not the only one. Raising canes closed their dining room nearby and innout is closing because of crime. Their last day is march 24th. Now to a womans prison with a documented history of sexual abuse was raided by the feds today. More than a dozen agents searched the prison seizing computers and documents. A source inside told the ap that the warden and associate warden and a captain were all taken away. The deputy regional director will replace the ousted warden. The fbi will only say they quote conducted a courtauthorized Law Enforcement activity. So, the prison was investigated in 2021 after eight employees including former warden and a chaplin were charged with sexually abusing inmates. The former warden was sentenced early this year to nearly six years in prison. Congress has conducted several investigations and the federal bureau of prisons has promised to fix the problems. Now, a health alert. Uc dave sis trying to contact 300 people who may have been exposed to measles at the emergency room. Last tuesday a child tested positive for the highly contagious viral illness which can come with a fever, cough, running nose and rash. Now, they are trying to reach any workers or other patients that may have been exposed it is airborne. It suspends in the air after that person was in the area. It is not a cause for panic or alarm but good prevention. It is immunization. Reporter this is the third case in california. Measles is on the rise worldwide thanks in part to pandemicdelayed vaccinations. Doctors are urging parents to check if their children are uptodate on their shots. Vaccines are usually given during childhood in two doses the first, between 12 and 15 months of age. The second, between 4 and 6 years of age. So, on any given day, more than 100,000 people take an ac transit bus. Across the three bay area counties the agency serves, not all of them have a place to sit while they wait. All right. Well, enter the bench guys. They have been doing a little bit of rogue carp entree carp entry to lend people a hand. Reporter when darryl and ming noticed there were no benches at many bus stops across the east bay instead of sitting on their hands, they decided to take a stand. It is easy to feel sort of helpless in the world with all of the stuff that is going on. And this is just a way to make the world a better place. Reporter it all started when their neighbor, who just gotten out of surgery was forced to sit on the curb because there was no bench at the bus stop. That is when darryl and ming way took matters in their own hands. Learning how to build a bench on youtube and making sure they are compliant with the citys disability regulations. As they drive around the east bay, they make a mental note of benchless bus stops. Today, it is the intersection of sacramento and virginia streets right by the North Berkeley bart station. While we fundamentally love our bench project, a great project, the goal is to get the cities to care about their transit riders and put the benches out. Reporter while it may seem like an exercise in futility they are getting a sitting ovation, in fact, their project has already pushed berkeley to swap one of their benches for an official city bench. They lit a fire under transit, would you say that . I would say a fire has been lit. Reporter jean is a board member. This quirky campaign is forcing the officials to find a solution to this deep deepseated issue. Putting benches at bus stops is not one of them. I am grateful for this action. It has sparked a conversation. At the end of the day, they head home. But, not before taking a load off. I love just sitting on it and take a break and then, you know, go about your day after. Now, the showers are just starting to approach the north bay. We had a batch of showers that tried to move through. Did not amount to a trace or so. But, a better chance of actual showers reaching the ground heading through this evening. Light to moderate rain. Even at its most intense. Leftover showers for the morning commute. Allowing extra time for that. Heading towards lunchtime. A couple left over sprinkles here and there. That is about it. Decreasing clouds heading through the afternoon. Sunshine peaking through. And then the clearing trend hitting through the middle of the workweek on wednesday. That is the point of which stronger off shore winds are kicking in. We are talking about that in just a second. Just one degree warmer, 60 in San Francisco with lower 60s for the north bay as well. These temperatures are close to but slightly below normal for this time of year. The bigger warm up is downtheline. Thursday, friday, inland temperatures, well into the 70s. Warmer weather you can expect the pollen count to climb quickly. It is the price that we pay for warm, dry conditions for this time of the year. One more day for the medium low category tomorrow into the high category. All of the way on the top of the scale. Juniper and ash are present. All sorts of stuff now that the blooms are coming out and it will be disbursed with gusty winds heading through wednesday night and thursday. While the winds are going to be strong, 4045 mileanhour gusts in the peaks in the north bay, the east bay, humidity will not be bonedry. That and the moisture that we have seen, the amount of rainfall, it will help us avoid fire threat. It is still something that we have to keep an eye on given the amount of rain. Friday, saturday, sunday, monday, a nice stretch of warm and dry weather, sunshine over head. The warm up, noticeable around the bay as well. Not quite as warm as the inland spots, the temperatures around 70 degrees over the weekend, early next week. And, of course, the coast, not as much of the warm weather. Your temperature still heading up, staying out of the 70s. You will reach into the 60s over Saint Patricks day weekend and next week not even a hint of rain once we are passed midday next week.
