It is almost every block, every light, there are people speeding down at top speed, running red lights. It is extremely dangerous. Reporter at this point there is nothing to indicate that the chrysler was racing another car point residence one action to make the streets safer. There is something about the cars racing, they need to put a stop to it because it is very dangerous. Despite how bad it looked, late last night police said only one of the injured victims was in the hospital and that person is expected to be okay. Police in the east bay are investigating a couple of brazen burglaries, thieves apparently used a truck to steal an atm at the gas station market on blanding street in the night before, burglars used a van to drag a safe out of a jewelry repair store just about four miles away on grand avenue. But in both cases, from all of their efforts, the thieves got away emptyhanded. Reporter investigators from the two Police Departments are sharing notes, while the two cases have similarities, it is unclear if they are connected. This is Surveillance Footage of the first burglary at grand jewelry repair, near oaklands lake merritt, happening on thursday morning around 3 45 a. M. , two vehicles and five burglars. The stores owners son said they used a van and a rope to drag open the metal gate. Once inside, they used the rope to try to drag a large safe out. But it snapped, so they took a heavy metal chain and put that over the safe and that is how they were able to drag it out. Reporter it was so heady, it took them a while to secure it and tie it to the back of the van. They couldnt quite get it into the utility truck, so you could see sparks, as they were on the freeway, pd was right there with them. It was heady. Reporter the burglars took off and left the safe in the middle of the road, police recovered the safe, which contained thousands of dollars in jewelry and watches. The repair shop also experienced significant damage when the burglars dragged the safe through the store, the owner was in tears when he saw the damage on thursday. This is 34 years of my life in their, but now i dont know if we are going to come back. Now hes thinking about retirement. It is more like a forced retirement because he does not feel safe. Thank you to all of the customers for supporting us for 34 years. Reporter nearby in alameda, around 4 30, burglars used the uhaul truck to back into their glass doors, they used the chain to drag an atm machine out of the gas station store. They are kind of desensitized, i feel like this is a normal occurrence in the bay area, and it is sad to feel like that. Reporter police were able to quickly recover the truck and the atm in oakland, but in both cases, the burglars got away. These burglaries are killing small businesses. We need leaders to bootstrap them, we need more hands on the ground and actually lead, do something. Reporter this happens so often, Bay Area Stores have removed atm machines from their locations, some stores no longer accept cash, only credit and debit cards to avoid robberies. After a massive water main break in San Francisco, some people who live nearby say they are worried that a hillside could collapse. Heres what it looked like from above. Water was shooting about 60 feet into the air. This was on the 1700 block right next to stern road, crews worked into the afternoon to get the water shut off. The real concern is this. A river of mud that started flowing down the hillside in the neighborhood near homes, listen to what neighbors had to say about it. I heard a crack, then boom, and i saw the water started shooting up. I dont know how much the soil will get eroded from the water washing down the hill. Weve had a lot of trees come down and it is a precarious area. This is not the first time a water main break caused drama in the neighborhood, in 2021, you might remember this, a break flooded stern grove, forcing the cancellations of the concerts. We have light rain showers moving into the north bay this morning but today is not going to be a washout, though showers are going to fall apart as they try to move across the area and most of us are going to see a couple of sprinkles. A stronger system will send more moisture towards us and a more widespread rain chance is in the forecast by tomorrow afternoon. But todays rain chance is late morning, north of the golden gate, and we taper off as we head into the afternoon. In between showers, it is going to be a cool day, temperatures topping out in the 50s and 60s, a few degrees below normal. It has been a turbulent week for united airlines, on friday, the second time in two days, one of the jets took off and had to make an Emergency Landing at l. A. X. This time, for some sort of hydraulic problem. Hours earlier, another united flight skidded off the runway after landing in houston , leaving the 737s stuck in the mud with the nose pointed up in the air. And on thursday, the wheel came off a united flight as it took off from sfo, the tire landed on a car in the employee parking lot. Nobody was hurt in any of those incidents. Retail activity in San Francisco is lacking in many big stores, they have either closed up shop or are planning to do so. Some Business Owners see this moment as an opportunity to bet on downtown San Francisco. Wilson walker talked with the owner of a bay area bagel empire about why she is putting her dough behind the idea that downtown will rise again. This is going to divide it into chunks. You can see it just gets wrapped up in the ends get stuck together and it comes out like a bagel. Emily winston is watching the early moments in the creation of a bagel and this phase is decidedly hightech. And we have the robot arm that picks it up and puts it on the rack. And that prevents a ton of repetitive stress, injury, and workers comp issues. Reporter even the Newest Technology does not replace the most essential elements of this old art form. We are doing the Old School New york bagel process and i have not added any automation to the, this is exactly as it has been done for the last 100 years. Reporter it is that neck that has pushed boichik bagels to the center of the bagel universe. We are probably running the most technically advanced bagel operations right now. My background is mechanical engineering, so i love this, this is where i get to shine. Reporter it is easy to see how their passion has translated into not just success but international acclaim. My wildest fantasy was that the New York Times would one day say my bagels are okay, then they came and say we are even better, which is completely nuts, but yeah, its awesome. I have a lot of people who are super excited to see a woman building a business that is so successful in gaining ground so publicly. And it is an honor to be a role model like that. Im super stoked. Im excited to change the bagel industry. We moved to San Francisco in 2016, and you know, you would like a good bagel if you have been in the east coast for most of your life. Weekday mornings starting at 5 on kpix. Welcome back. Here is a look at this morning at san jose, looking like a beautiful start to this saturday morning, the time is 6 15. The coast guard says it has cleaned up about 85 of an oil sheen floating in the ocean near huntington beach. At this point it is unclear if that was the source of tarballs that washed up along the shoreline. I stuck out my hands and my feet, it is not the easiest thing to get off. It is a bunch of tar that we stepped on, i mean we can see it along the shoreline. Never a fun situation. The two and a halfmile slick was spotted thursday evening, not far from a pair of offshore platforms but the coast guard is not exactly sure where it came from. Rain showers making their way into the north bay this morning, that is the best chance of anything, more than a trace of rainfall is going to remain, that area will fall apart as it tries to move into the rest of the bay area. A better chance of more widespread and slightly heavy rain in the forecast beginning tomorrow afternoon and continuing into the early hours of monday morning but a little bit of a break on monday before another system sends rain monday night and tuesday. None of this will lead to any potential flooding threats, we dry out and warm up by the end of next week. The showers this morning are just falling apart as we head into the early afternoon, we will see if you breaks in the cloud cover but still sunshine for most of us today. Then we have the next area of rain that is going to be moving into the north bay by about midday on sunday, spreading across more of the bay area as we head through sunday afternoon and sunday evening. If you add up both systems, a 10th of an inch to about a third of an inch of total rainfall, maybe the coastal ranges picking up closer to half an inch, but even when you add the additional round of rain on top of it monday night into tuesday, we are talking about less than an inch of rain with all three systems put together. For the sierra, this is going to be a snow maker, but more so with that system that moves in monday night into tuesday and that is when we are likely to add up closer to a foot of accumulation especially on the higher elevations. In between showers today it is going to be cool overall, with temperatures only topping out in the low to mid 60s in the Santa Clara Valley and those will be the warm spots around the region. The rain chances are keeping a lid on how much we warm up. Low 60s in the east bay, everybody else around 60 degrees at best, just below 60 degrees in San Francisco. And the north bay because we have the best chance of rain, you are going to talk about in the upper 50s this afternoon. Similar temperatures for everybody on sunday with rain moving back in the afternoon. If youre looking forward to a longer stretch of dry weather, you have it in the longrange outlook. Through st. Patricks day weekend, showing a good chance of drier than normal conditions and a good chance of warmer than normal conditions. That timeframe looks like we will see the warm response approaching 80 degrees, at least for the day before st. Patricks day next saturday. In the shortterm, it is unsettled and cool as we head through today and tomorrow, monday a little break from the shower activity but still a chance of a passing shower. Monday night and tuesday, one last batch of rain, then we begin the stretch of dry weather with temperatures warming up into the 70s for basically everybody except for the coast. This morning we have an update on californias most popular lovebirds, we are talking about jackie and shadow, the two bald eagles currently living in big bear valley. This is the camera feed of them. Northern californias recent blizzard dropped 100 inches of snow over the course of four days. But it ended the snow drought nonetheless at the tail end of the warmest february ever of record on earth. We are seeing science signs of an early spring. The storm slammed california with heavy snow, high wind and treacherous whiteout conditions. But the aftermath simply epic, in just four days, 6 to 10 feet of snowfall, concern over the snow drought evaporated. However, we have yet to dig ourselves out of the much bigger problem. The higher temperatures in the ocean and the air allowed the atmosphere to hold more water. The Ocean Temperatures are warm right now and so this cold massive air that moved down has picked up heat and picked up moisture as it was moving across the pacific. Reporter creating a warmer and wetter storm that was still below freezing. Jones is keeping his eye on the snowpack and with good reason. February was the ninth straight month in a row to be the warmest on record globally. Because the conditions are warmer, the snow might melt faster than usual. Reporter jones is helpful for new strategies that could capture water and direct it underground, he says it is not too late to slow down Climate Change. We do have to be aware of the changes that are happening and start to prepare for them. Reporter so we can weather any storm.
