This is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. It is the biggest day of primary season. Millions of voters casting their ballots here in california and a dozen other states on this super tuesday. We are following the big money measures and biggest races. Thank you for joining us this afternoon. There is a lot at stake at the polls today and we have just five more hours to get ballots in. A political expert joins me in just a few minutes to break it all down, what the big races mean for you. First, lets get to anne makovec with news headlines. We are beginning with breaking news. 50 minutes go, police in oakland announced the arrest of the killing of a corner store worker earlier this year. It happened in february in january, rather. Family friends say the brother owns the store and he had worked there for years. The family friend says he came from yemen. He and his wife and his four children live near the store. Police Just Announced the arrest of a juvenile in connection with that. Structure police in fremont investigating a shooting near a walmart today. Our chopper found one car with what looked like bulletholes in the window. Police say one person has been sent to the hospital and investigators have not released any information on the suspect but they say there is no threat to the public this afternoon. Phase just released new renderings for their proposed park in las vegas. The design includes views of the vegas skyline. The ballpark is not expected to be ready until 2028. Caltrans an amtrak expanding service from oakland. The agencies unveiled seven new trains at a ribboncutting ceremony today. They will run daily roundtrip routes from oakland to bakersfield. The Sierra Snowpack is now above average for the year. The California Department of Public Resources says the central Sierra Snowpack is at 103 . That comes after the area got more than 10 feet of snow from that powerful blizzard over the weekend. To first alert weather now. A mix of lingering showers and dry skies today and there are more rain chances ahead. Lets get to meteorologist darren peck. The rain chances will be a lot like what we were just seeing over your shoulder. Very light drops of rain on the lens. There is very little to this. Technically, we are getting some light rain. If we look at the totals, a couple hundredths of an inch. You either want to be in a hill or at a Higher Elevation or along the peninsula or the coast to have noticed this. We did get a 10th in petaluma. We are taking a look at numbers in the berkeley hills. Do the comparison on where we are for the year and weve got great news. We were just talking about snow in the sierra. We are 120 of average now for rain. There is more coming in tomorrow but it is a complicated system. You see the showers that come in through tomorrow and tonight . Just held off that far west coast for sonoma county. Then we see more rain trying to come in for wednesday. We have to look at this in a slightly bigger perspective to understand why this is a difficult forecast in terms of how much rain we may get over the next 36 hours and when i might come. You see the system on water vapor . A tightly wound area of low pressure cutting itself off from the jet stream. That line of rain within that starts to get pulled toward the coast and then does a weird thing. Instead of continuing its progression and following that path and moving from west to east and bringing us that rain, instead, that rain for the most part gets pulled down to the south. You can see it get pulled away. Not to say we dont get something. Here is wednesday. We will stop it in the late morning. It will be more noticeable here from the Santa Clara Valley south and down toward big sur. We have a chance of rain through the northbay that show up. It wont be widespread, super impactful but technically there is rain in the forecast for wednesday. Just dont count on a whole lot for it. The same system does drop a little more snow into the sierra, oddly enough. For every other location, it is only a lowgrade Winter Weather advisory with snow levels getting down to 5000 feet. This is just the first one. This is another one coming after this. We will get a nice break for thursday and friday. Friday looks fantastic. You can see the one day we have sunshine in the mid 60s. On saturday, this next system sitting way out here gets pulled in across the pacific. We started looking at this one yesterday and it already looks less impressive now than it did just 24 hours ago but it is still persistently there. That line of rain is coming into the bay. Another weak system likely comes across on saturday. There could be others for early next week and those could be different because those start to come back down from the gulf of alaska a little bit more with colder air to work with but neither of these look like big rainmakers. Weve got to keep a chance of rain going. A couple of days on here that all have their chance. We know about wednesday. Thursday and friday, we get the break. Friday, sunny skies. Saturday, that next system comes through. That might be a more impressive we dont get a lot from saturday but technically we will get something and then that next system after that comes in monday and tuesday and it will be a little colder, maybe a better snow producer in the mountains but nothing like the last storm. Visa look like gardenvariety rain or snow makers. Back to you. It is super tuesday and voters from coast to coast are heading to the polls right now to cast their primary votes. Most of the delegates awarded over the primary season will be determined today. President joe biden and former President Donald Trump are still the frontrunners of their respective parties. And santa clara county, 2000 pool workers were hired to help run operations at 104 Voting Centers across the country. Officials are expecting a turnout of 45 to 55 . That is on the lower end of the normal range for voter participation. I would say that no election is the same. Elections are always evolving. It is a privilege to be able to put that into practice for our county. Polls close at 8 00 tonight. You need to turn in your ballot by that time or be in line to vote by 8 00 p. M. If you are planning to vote by mail, needs to be postmarked by today. Joining me now is sonoma state professor david. He will break down some of the major races and measures. Lets start with the race for the seat held by late senator dianne feinstein. This is a hotly contested race. What do you make of who the frontrunners are right now and what that says of california politics . If you look at the amount of money that was spent on this race for television, it is enormous. It far exceeds what we have seen for president ial campaigns. This has helped adam schiff but it has also helped him elevate steve garvey. The poll talks about steve garvey being ahead. This is not necessarily the case but nonetheless, he should run right with adam schiff. Republicans hold the party. Democrats scatter. They can go to adam schiff, katie porter or barbara lee. We dont know what has happened. The polls have not closed but if steve garvey is in the top two and he moves to november, it will still be a difficult road to win and become the next u. S. Senator. Nobody wants that matchup more than adam schiff. He definitely wants to run against adam schiff. If it were another candidate, it would be a tougher matchup. Katie porter was in second place before this happened. It will be interesting to see what barbara lee does. It is kind of causing katie porter the lead. Adam schiff has been in the legal campaign. Were you surprised by steve garveys success in this campaign . He did not campaign hard on the specific issues. He did not really shine in the debates, yet, he did well. This is an interesting strategy. He had a weird exchange in the debate about touching the homeless. He talked about being a moderate conservative. He has talked about his compassion and developing consensus without being specific on the issue. He talked about the market. When you hit hard issues related to gaza, what to do about a ceasefire or what to do about certain elements of the economy, steve garvey lacks specifics. That has not hurt him in a primary. Democrats slice and dice the electorate while the republicans stay whole. Remember, nikki haley is still in the race. Donald trump, while not popular amongst most californians, is very popular amongst caliper and republicans. They have a reason to come out to vote for him. That is the dynamic we will see by tomorrow. We will get to the president ial race in the next proposition one, Governor Newsom putting all of his eggs in that basket. Why was that important for him to get behind this initiative . If you look at proposition one, the governor, since he was involved in San Francisco politics, he has been involved with the issue of homelessness and Mental Health and wraparound services. This is a very difficult issue. Look at los angeles. This has challenged mayor bass. Homelessness and that particular issue is a really difficult Public Policy problem to solve. Voters start to look at this one single proposition on the ballot, it was moved by legislation to appear on the march ballot with no competition. If that measure doesnt pass, that assaults the governor popularity. That is important because ballot measures boost turnout. We expect to see more than 12 ballot measures on the ballot in november. Most of those will be bombarded on the airways. As that happens, more than 1 billion will be spent on campaignfinance. If they lose this election on proposition one and they come back to the ballot, what does that look like for other things related to guns and gun violence for the governor, who is not running for president while looking at running for president. I was going to ask you, he has been making an effort to get in front of the national stage. Prop one would get a lot of eyes on him. Governor schwarzenegger did this. Ronald reagan did this. Pete wilson did this. Jerry brown did this. To use the ballot measure process. You use the folks to push forward and build the turnout in november. You can identify yourself with the policy area that you can use after the president ial election and moving forward. Before we go to break, there is another potential recall campaign against the governor. Do you think it has legs . It has legs for republicans to try to draw turnout in november. If steve garvey is on the ballot, perhaps that helps him. The governor will turn that back because they will be a lot of voters who are on the sidelines that will show up in californias general election november. Thank you. We will have you talk about the National Election in november coming up. We are staring at a likely rematch in the race for the white house. What each candidate needs to do to win in november. It is not your Traditional Campaign robocall. I am an Artificial Intelligence volunteer. How Artificial Intelligence is making its way further into the world of politics. Lets talk about the race for the white house. We are looking toward a potential rematch between President Biden and former President Donald Trump. David mcewen is with us once again. Voters are not exactly thrilled about this rematch, to say the least. Voters are not enthusiastic about these two octogenarians running for president. Emerging voters dont show up on the primaries for example but Younger Voters comprise what is called the rising american electorates, younger, more diverse, more urban. This is the group of voters that have a yoga mat, take half hour to order that hazelnut maki auto. I feel triggered. Nonetheless, they are key components because they live in battleground areas and states and areas those are the voters that determine what happens in pennsylvania, georgia, michigan. They voted uncommitted last week in michigan. So interesting. What do you think President Biden needs to do in the next nine months or so to convince voters that he needs to stay in his job for the next four years . He is battling a lot of criticism about his age, his stance on the war in israel and gaza. There could not be higher stakes for the state of the union on thursday. This is the moment for President Biden and for democrats to layoff their case. They have been defensive. They have been slow. They want to talk about their accomplishments but they have not laid out their case and gone back. We have seen the president do more of this. He has done latenight tv appearances. He has done more offense. It is a high wire act for the president and for democrats that also helps them in the house. We see some evidence coming out of today for what happened in the central valley, for example. For donald trump, he has to expand his base. Even though we see these national polls, we also see a group that is not thrilled with joe biden but will not vote for donald trump. Those are the folks that are not thrilled. A third of that gets carved off and goes to rfk jr. , cornell west, that is a problem in those same battleground states of arizona, colorado, michigan, pennsylvania, georgia, wisconsin. Nikki haley is still in this race. What does she have to gain . She is going to South Carolina tonight. That is a marker for something to happen. The big question out of tonight, doshi win a state like utah . Does she pickup something in vermont . She has to win a state. If she doesnt do that, does she say she is out of the race later tonight or tomorrow . She could stay in a little bit longer but donald trump will walk up the nomination for the gop before the end of this month. Almost 80 of the delegates are selected at this time. It will be interesting to watch for what she does the next couple of days because pressure will ramp up on her just as donald trump uses every Court Appearance as a proxy campaign event. So many interesting storylines. Thank you. Election robo calls are a little different this time around. More and more, we are seeing the role that ai is playing. We look at how one campaign in the bay area is leaning into ai. Hey, there. My name is jennifer. Jennifer is not your average campaign volunteer. I am an Artificial Intelligence volunteer. If you have marked the historic shift in election campaign, naturally coming from the heart of silicon valley. The candidate himself says it is to get a wider audience. It allows voters to spend as much time as they would like engaging with the capability and gaining a sense of who i am and what i stand for so they can be informed when they go to vote. He is a small handful of campaigns across the country deploying new technology from political ai company in the run up to the primary election. Jennifers ability to answer questions accurately, to not guess if there was not a real answer but to be able to say, i am not familiar with peters position on that and really be a good steward of answering questions honestly and truthfully. Jennifer is not the only ai campaign voice. I spoke with one version called ashley who answered questions about economic, foreign, and social policies for two minutes. The caller gave detailed responses that outline the candidates platform and gave conversationally short replies. While the answers appeared to be factually correct, the potential of ai wider elections have prompted state lawmakers to introduce legislation that would protect voters and candidates alike from suggestive content. Drew lieber is a cosponsor of the legislation. He says his top priority is preventing the spread of misinformation. We have already seen it, for example, in New Hampshire where the alleged voice of the president of the United States was encouraging all these democrats from voting, saying dont vote in the primary, wait until the general. What that was about was trying to make sure that democrats would not vote in that election. That is a form of ai that is incredibly deceptive. The legislation seeks to require social Media Companies to label ai generated content, provide verification tools for images and banned deep fakes for four months before an election and two months after. We are on the precipice of our first real ai election. We all need to recalibrate the way we are looking at protecting our democracy. All eyes will be on jennifer, ashley, and the other ai voices nearly as much as their candidates. Am i speaking with kevin ford . They pioneer what could be the beginning of the election. The software is being deployed across the country including in battleground states like ohio. Is politics stressing yo lift the clouds off of. Virtual weather, only on kpix and pix .
