Has become a hot button issue in the upcoming Mayoral Election as some candidates say that struggling businesses are proof that San Francisco leadership needs to change. For more on this we check in with Wilson Walker live in front of macys. This is a big story. We knew there would be fallout. One thought is we have seen this before with nordstrom. Whole foods. A lot of big closures and we know the conversation. Is it changing retail or the city like a breakup . Is it them or us . Now it happens during the Election Year so this falls into the mayoral campaign. Huge stores like macys or walgreens, they are closing. Business goes down. This man does not operate on the scale of macys, but he is around the corner from union square. He knows this is more bad news among a handful of Stores Across the city, now only one is currently suffering. The store downtown goes down more than 50 . Still downtown. Residential is fine. There are no more tourists. There are no more big companies. There are definitely possibilities. It is not like nordstroms where they say we are leaving and exiting. This is a different situation. Mayor london breed repeatedly using the word opportunity when discussing macys announcement that she started by emphasizing this. Just to be clear, macys made a business decision to close 150 stores all over the country. There are 150 closures , but it is not an easy environment for business. For the second day in a row daniel, who already has a billboard above union square grabbed a headline to make his case that city leadership, as a whole has failed. This is a blow, but , we are coming back. This city is the greatest city in the world. We need a plan. Owners say it will take more people to start filling the massive amount of space that is already empty and he says that the help is needed fast. They can see it is dying. They have to save it. Do you think that can happen . I believe it can be done. He has been in that location since 1991. He has seen a lot of change. As we were talking we agreed, a lot of what we talk about around union square, things that may be problematic for the business goes back a long way. Here is video from 2018. In the last few years it has been more about the mentally ill individuals on the street acting erratically on sidewalks, coming into stores. 2018, six years ago , that was the head of the Business District at the time. Talking about problems mounting for years. We talk about the pandemic and changing retail and nearterm things. You talk with people in the neighborhood, problems and concerns go back many years, about a decade. These are problems mounting for a long time and that is what the conversation will be sounding like as we move toward the Mayoral Election 250 days away. These are not sudden problems, these have built up and you can hear that in the frustration of the people who are tired. You add macys to the mix and things need to turn around. There will be the change and reimagining conversation. Thank you so much. Macys has been at union square since 1929. Generation the people in the bay area have memories there. Anne makovec with more from shoppers who are sad to see it go. I worked in the area so this is personal for you, too . Everybody got a little down. I used to buy birthday presents there every year. This year looks like it will be the last. A lot of people do agree macys has gone downhill over the last five years. But it was always there is something to count on. It has been there several decades by this point. That is something we dont know what the end date will be. The supervisor confirmed that the store will stay open until the end of the year, but the location will be put up for sale. Macys, a fixture in that district sponsoring the Christmas Tree lighting, famous for holiday windows featuring the spca. Adoptable cats and dogs. The store with decades of memories for bay area natives and tourists alike. I was like, that is a staple. It has been here for so long. Especially for union square, you think about macys. Some people are blaming the streets below , the crime and openair drug use. We heard from a man who works nearby. That we were going up for it. Getting things taken care of , by knowing that macys is closing , it is not going upward. We heard from the Union Square Alliance saying there is no getting around the fact that the announcement hurts, but they believe we should work to a solution that allows macys to keep this store opened. If that does not come to pass, the expectation is that a new owner will come forward. The Alliance Says in all likelihood there will be a Holiday Shopping season and a holiday tree later this year. There is something bittersweet about that, knowing it is eventually going the way of the dodo. That is really true. You probably know this is just the latest store closing. There have been several others, including big ones like nordstrom, anthropology, Banana Republic and old navy and walgreens in the financial district. People rallied outside of San Francisco and front street. Hoping to put pressure on walgreens to change course. Losing this store that is so close to so many residents is a big blow. A walgreens spokesperson says several factors went into the decision, but ultimately it is due to a decrease in foot traffic in the financial district since the pandemic. Congress running out of time to avoid a partial government shutdown. There are some major Sticking Point in the negotiations as President Biden calls leaders from both parties to hash things out, both sides expressing optimism. Democrats want to the deal to include aid for ukraine as House Speaker mike johnson doubled down saying that the southern border should be priority number one. We must take care of americas needs first. When you talk about americas needs you to talk about the open border. How they are turning hotels into housing for people who need it the most. Workers are putting the pieces in place to house the homeless. In this case they are not building from scratch. They are converting an old motel to permanent homes. Will it work . Just ask paul jamison. This is my humble abode. You can see the water damage. What motel owners do is cover things up. Convergence can be faster than building from the ground up , which is important because housing is needed.
