Were already off to a warmer start than compared to where we were at yesterday during this time but this afternoon, were talking about 90s down into the Santa Clara Valley. 90s off into the east bay. Right around the corner heading into this afternoon and 80s just near San Francisco. But for now, were waking up in the 60s and nice and cool for now. Right around the corner the heat wave really impacts us. I mean daytime highs today were above average but not recordbreaking by any means but this is warm for us. This is beautiful weather to get out there and take a nice little stroll along the beach. Maybe if you have live more inland were expecting 90s today might be a great day for the pool. Just to get out there and get some fresh air but of course be careful during that midportion of the day when the uv rays are strongest. The reason why were warming up, we have High Pressure just offshore. Thats continuing to push its way in. That warms us up and it dries us up and also changes the direction of the winds. Look at this. The offshore winds are going to be a lot more apparent as we head into this afternoon and throughout the next couple of days. This is just tomorrow alone. As we see the offshore winds, it actually helps clear the skies up. Suddenly were talking about sunshine as that marine layer is pushed just away and thats allowing for us to see 80s in the forecast and a lot of sunshine just in time for fleet week. I mean the air show is right around the corner. Theres already general admission happen right now to check out all the ships and get out there and enjoy what the city has to offer. Supervisor dan White Opening fire on dan moscone killing him and harvey milk killing him. Watch. Both mayor moscone and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. Oh jesus christ. [ crowd murmuring ] the suspect is supervisor dan white. Reporter Dianne Feinstein having risen in the ranks of the board of supervisors and then in thahat moment, put he front and center to then become a national figure. So it seems fitting that as we look atelier life, and the fact shes born and raised here in San Francisco, rose to leadership here, and then National Prominence here. She would lie in state here at city hall and a lot of people saying in is that trajectory of going in supervisor to senator, she held a value and Dianne Feinstein was shaping people. Watch. She loved fleet week and loved the prominence it gave to the navy and the shipyards and businesses bringing how long crowds in. Fleet week and paying tribute to Dianne Feinstein. Heres that angle. I can tell you that she was active with fleet week. It was her baby. And she was an honorary cochair for all of these years. Sometimes advice and consent because she had her hands in it. Back with more information on her life and legacy and of course we will have live coverage of senator Dianne Feinsteins Memorial Service starting tomorrow at 12 30 on pix and streaming on cbs news bay area. The bullets hit the glass behind my head and we all just tried to get out of the way. Students talking about the terrifying moments during a shooting on a College Campus in baltimore. Calls for an active shooter on the campus of the historically black college came in yesterday around 9 30 p. M. The universitys president said the first gunshots were reported just minutes after students and families had left a coronation ceremony. Classes will be canceled today as Police Continue to investigate the shooting and the search for the suspect. Kevin mccarthys short run as speaker has ended. In a historic move yesterday d now former House Speaker was ousted from his position in a no confidence vote. Now the big question is, who will be the next speaker of the house . Mccarthy said last night he would not run for the position again. In the meantime, representative Patrick Mchenry of North Carolina will serve as the interim speaker. Gianna . Well, when you think of fleet week, the blue angels immediately come to mind. As well as those massive ships that sail into the bay. But its about much more than just the spectacle. Theres actually a very practical purpose to bringing the military to the bay area each year. So Shawn Chitnis joins us live this morning as hes following the San Francisco Fire Department and the military on their way to carry out some joint exercises. Hi shawn. Reporter hey gianna, good morning, really excited to follow along on this unique opportunity that really celebrates the best of fleet week. I am joined now by elliot a paramedic with the San Francisco Fire Department. Good morning. Thanks so much for being here with us. So tell us a little bit about whats going on this morning and what do you have planned . Yeah, good morning shawn. This morning, we just got here so first thing we do is we check out our rig and were super excited having fleet week. Something thats been a tradition with the Fire Department. As you can see in the back right now my partner joe is working to get the monitor set up and get the day ready and check out the bags and get prepped today go out on the streets. Right. One of the great advantages of this partnership is that you can learn from each other. Reporter what do you hope to take away . Thats great question. Some of the benefits are the variety of calls that they get to see. Very different than ours. So when they get to come on to our ambulance, we get the opportunity to hang out and talk about those experiences. Kind of share in that. And then learn from each other. Which is invaluable. Reporter and of course it goes both ways right . Talk to us a little bit about what you think you can share with them. What they can benefit, because you guy are doing this every day, every morning. Bright and early. We learn a lot from the military a lot of our very specialized medicine comes from them. So the things that they see out on the field, its very different than the things we see in the streets of San Francisco but we take from what they teach and we bring into that our medicine. The sharing of that knowledge back and forth is what im looking forward to hearing more about today and maybe whats happening for them that might be coming down the pipeline for us some day. Reporter were going to get ready and get in the ambulance and follow along and more to show you coming up in the next hour. Its good to get this perspective because i think its a little comforting knowing that you know, were all concerned when big things happen but knowing the First Responders are very well prepared. Other than a grand parade of ships and air show. Speaking of that, jessica, tminus how many hours . Do you want the exact minute and second the too . Because i have that right now. But yes, i am flying with the blue angels today. Honestly guys, fleet week is better than my birthday week. This is just official. Like i have officially accepted that fleet week is what i look forward to every single year. You know the best part this year the weather is cooperating with us. Were expecting High Pressure to move in. In the Santa Clara Valley right now. Were talking about 90s this afternoon down in the Santa Clara Valley. 90s off into the east bay later today and for now still in the 60s. Enjoy in fall like weather we have. Later this afternoon san franciscans are actually going to be seeing 80s in the forecast. Which is just wild to think about. Of course were in october. We are officially in fall. Yet High Pressure is still a thing. And actually warms us up a lot and going to change the direction of the winds. Talk about what this really does for us as we see High Pressure offshore it changes the jet stream. We see the winds kind of moving in from inland to offshore winds. And thats going to allow for temperatures and daytime highs to really rise. I mean, to add to that were also seeing offshore winds allow for that marine layer to kind of dissipate. Were going to be seeing sunny skies throughout the next couple of days. And relative humidity, its going to drop. This is our temperature anomaly map right behind me, this is not only impacting us but the whole west coast. From washington down into san diego for that matter. And yes, we are going to be seeing temperatures really peak tomorrow for our thursday forecast. But its not recordbreaking by any means. Its just really warm out there. So if you are getting ready to go out to the air shows this weekend, honestly, tank top and short weather is my opinion. This is what were looking at today alone and i mean tomorrow alone. 90s in the forecast through san jose all the way into livermore. But im going to take it a step back and wail show you daytime highs today because were already seeing that heat wave really impact us for the wednesday forecast. 90s in the north bay. With the exception of novato sitting at 88 this afternoon. As we head down into the San Francisco area, just across the Golden Gate Bridge, sunny skies this afternoon in the forecast for us with 80s in store too. 70s near halfmoon bay and as we head all the way down south to the Santa Clara Valley, its going to be gorgeous this afternoon. Marine layer going to be nonexistent and waking up to clear skies this morning. A very similar trend into the next couple of days but let me put this down and show you what you can expect throughout the next seven days because yes we are warming up but for how much longer . I mean, not too much longer. As soon as next sunday and monday and tuesday temperatures drop back down to average and were seeing the partly cloudy skies. A slight, slight chance of showers possible along the coast as we head into next week. But thats longrange models and get through the heat wave first for the friends in the bay. 80s in the forecast for us and until around sunday when partly cloudy skies start rolling their way in. Thats the only day for the air shows that im actually even concerned about. For the rest of us, were seeing sunny skies for friday, heading into saturday. Now over to you, g. Thanks. Moving on the freeways this morning and start off with the bay bridge sort of sets the tone of where were sitting at for the morning commute and its busy already metering lights are on and a shroved into San Francisco. Upper deck is rodded there as well. Definitely start grabbing the coffee and getting out the door taking that bay bridge. Drive into the city. Or maybe even the san mateo bridge i know thats getting a litment bit busy as well. If you want to use Public Transit, that is on time this morning. And its probably a good idea especially if you are coming into San Francisco later on today to pay your respects to Dianne Feinstein. She will lie in state today at the in downtown San Francisco at city hall. So polk street that area in and around there. There are closures through there. Tomorrow as well. There will be closures in and around city hall and civic center also for the Memorial Service. Definitely use Public Transit. Muni reroutes will be happening for the 5r fulton as well in and around the area and that starts tomorrow. For today consider using muni or b. A. R. T. Heading into San Francisco. Nicole . All right. I mean, its obvious. I mean, were so far past that to be honest with you. Thats obvious, i mean. You just want to piss me off going into this weekend, i appreciate that. I do actually. Just a few hours from now her body will lie in state in the city that she loved. Feinstein died last week in washington, d. C. At the age of 90. Your community station with coverage all day long as San Francisco honors the political trailblazers service and of course her legacy. And our coanchor reed cowan will be live with us in just a second at city hall all morning long. And talking about what she did and the reflections and how you can actually be a part of whats going to be a very special and historic day, reed. Reporter very much a historic day and you are starting to see action here at city hall. This is San Francisco Fire Department. They moved us down just a little bit because theyre going to raise those masts and put up a huge American Flag that will be a major backdrop for that moment when the senators body will be brought in to city hall to lie in state in the rotunda. And we know this is a Community Experience and a Community Conversation to be had. A master class in leadership and legacy. So heres how you can participate. This is how things are going to go over the next couple of days. This morning, at 8 00 a. M. , mayor london breed will receive the United States senator Dianne Feinsteins family as the senators body is escorted into city hall to lie in state in the rotunda. You at home can come down here to this experience and sign a condolence book. That goes on from 9 00 a. M. To 7 00 p. M. Just be aware there will be some security checks that will be going through bags to keep things safe and parking is just nonexistent down here at this point. So take public transportation. Feinsteins public memorial though will be held tomorrow on the front steps of city hall at 1 00. What a picture that will be. Several members of congress will be here on the steps to attend of city hall and we also understand a taped message from President Joe Biden who worked as a senator with Dianne Feinstein. Hell also be heard tomorrow. Her storied political career though began in San Francisco back in 1969 as we look at city hall here when she was elected to the board of superscissors. Feinstein would ultimately become the first woman to serve as the board of supervisors president. Listen. Dianne was always elegant, charming, graceful, the most together person that you could possibly imagine. You have to remember that she was breaking glass ceilings even before i was doing so. She became a supervisor at a time when people said, oh, girls dont get to be supervisors. Reporter you know, you are going to hear that phrase a lot over the next couple of days. First for feinstein, it was 1992 when voters sent her to washington, d. C. Elected to be a senator. A female voice in the halls of congress. But she didnt stop there. She was also a big part of getting Barbara Boxer elected in what was called the year of the woman. Listen to that. I will never forget the night we made history. We were at the Fairmont Hotel waiting to see what would happen and she was a shooin and i was certainly absolutely the underdog. When the two of us made it. Two women from the bay area, jewish women from the bay area, it was such history. Reporter you know, one of the legacy pieces of Dianne Feinsteins life was of course fighting the gun lobby and in fact she famously said about assault weapons, they are not to hunt deer, they are for hunting people. What informed Dianne Feinsteins feelings about gun and the gun lobby and the nra being too much in control of so many members of congress . Well, it was in addition to the fact that she was at city hall when dan whit shot and killed mayor moscone and also what are have milk but also the 1993 attack in San Francisco in which a 55yearold man just walked into the Office Building and opened fire killed eight workers with a pair of semiautomatic pistols. Thats when she really started to crusade for fun control legislation. That shooting at 101 california street really galvanized a 1994 crime bill including the federal assault weapons ban that feinstein said she was proud to have authored. Listen. Her role in passing these strong bills, her role in talking about extreme risk laws, her role in talking about assault weapons, it saved lives. Were so grateful for her commitment and her support throughout the years. And we will continue to honor her by pushing forward and moving for gun violence prevention actions on the federal and state level also. Reporter without Dianne Feinstein, many people say that Gun Legislation would not have gone through. So we will continue our live reports here from San Francisco city hall a fitting tribute to a daughter of San Francisco. Born and raised here. And isnt it fitting that during fleet week, something she championed, Dianne Feinstein will be remembered. Ladies, back to you. Yeah, reed, i cant think of a classier way to say goodbye to her. We hear all about how classy she was. And the poise that she held. And that its during fleet week and our servicemen and women get to pay an official tribute. Yeah, something that was very special and important to her reed, thank you for that. Well check in with you in just a little bit and you think about how she moved forward from there what she did. We will talk about that as we have live extended coverage of senator feinsteins Memorial Service tomorrow starting at 12 30 on pix and streaming on cbs news bay area. A live look outside right now on this wednesday morning. Were looking live from mount diablo this morning. Over the east bay and the sun is up. And i know lot of us are thinking ant today and tomorrow and this weekend with all the fleet week festivities, jess. Absolutely. Fleet week is here in San Francisco. We have the italian heritage parade happening around the corner but guys for everyone in the bay area were feeling a heat wave heading into this afternoon. You are going to notice it no motte matter where you live in the bay. For example, the Santa Clara Valley, were all waking up right now to the 60s and the 50s all the way down into san jose. Lets actually tilt it more so we can get morgan hill this. This afternoon were going to be in the 90s in the Santa Clara Valley, enjoy this falllike weather that we have right now. Quote unquote. Just the Early Morning temperatures because in this afternoon we go were seeing plenty of sunshine in the bay area. A lot of warmth for us and were going to hold on tight to the warmth heading into the next couple of days. Right now San Francisco only at 61 degrees. This afternoon were talking about 80s in the forecast for us. Can you tell the excitement in my voice . You know what i mean. But that area of High Pressure just offshore. Thats the big cause for this warrant thats coming right around the corner and weather getting offshore wind thats helping clear out the skies just in time for fleet week. And its beautiful out there. But it will say this. Theres a couple of things to talk about when the area of High Pressure starts moving its way in. As we get the offshore winds, relative humidity drops. Just like that. And then were talking about increased chance of fire threat. Just be very careful as things start to dry up you want to be very careful and dont burn things outside and take it slow in the afternoon hours. Take good care of yourself. Daytime highs today are well above average. Were talking ability 80s along the coast. Beautiful beach forecast if you ask me. And then of course 90s off into the inland areas and all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley and up near santa rosa. So well have more on how long this heat wave is going to last coming up in your first alert forecast. But for now, g, how are the roads . You know getting busy this morning on some of the bay area bridges. Jess, so for anyone maybe making that ride on the richmondsan rafael bridge, or the bay bridge, we were already seeing brake lights there. But not the case at the Golden Gate Bridge. So far its still moving along pretty well. And i do want to note not a lot of fog out there. In fact visibility looks great. I cant say the same for this perspective. Bay bridge toll plaza metering lights with turned on andtraffic is busy heading into San Francisco. Grab the coffee and get going making the ride out of tracy into the altamont pass. Supercommuters, things are getting busy for that ride westbound 580 over towards north flynn. Its time now for a look at this mournings top stories. Listen to that right there. Thats the marine corps brass band shined in part of fleet weeks neighborhood Concert Series. This is just one of about two dozen opinions the marine corps and navy bands will be putting on across the city this week. So our jos moran was there and she spoke with a couple who may be just the bands biggest fans. Reporter the drums, the tuba, the saxophone and more. All instruments the 1st Marine Division brass band played for families at noe valley town square on tuesday night. We play like party music. Reporter music that you can dance to. One of the stars of the show, Sergeant Cameron wanser. He grew up in Pleasant Hill and started playing the saxophone when he was about 10 years old. Before you even join the marine corps, especially as a meoper, a musician essentially, you have to audition and you have to meet at a certain level in order to get in. Reporter thats just one of the steps wanser went through to get here. And watching from the front row was his mom and dad with their phones out recording, the performance. My heart is just full right now. [ laughter ] proud mama. Very proud. Reporter chrissy and randy wanser live in texas now. But they used to live in the bay. Weve hardly missed a show since fourth grade. So were not going to start missing them now. Were kind of like a groupie i guess. There were warm embraces afterwards. And for wanser, he was happy to have the opportunity to play here. Its amazing, thats why i joined to play for the people. Reporter he got to do so in the area he grew up in. Well, they sound so good. Cbs news bay area is the official media partner for fleet week. Weve dot you covered from land, air and sea all week long leading up to our spectacular friday special. The parade of ships live at 11 00 a. M. With the blue angels live at 3 00. Time now 6 43. It looks like a sign that the labor market remains tight right now. What new numbers mean for the health of the economy coming up in this mornings money watch report. And heres a live look outside before we head to the break. The sun is rising on what is going to be a time new for a look at whats coming up later on cbs mornings. Tony dokoupil joins us live from new york. Good morning to you tony. Its an important day in San Francisco for us as we say goodbye to Dianne Feinstein. Which im sure you guys will be discussing. What else do you have coming up . Yeah, well be getting into that and a lot of other matters and of course the big news out of washington. Good morning nicole. Coming up on cbs mornings when something unexpected happens in washington like the removal of the House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy. Well talk about what it meanings for the country. Also in our pushing the limits series, weve got the inspirational story of a man who swam the entire length of the hudson river. More than 300 miles in Water Quality good and bad and a heck of a feat. Even Bigger Mission though and it has to do with Water Quality. Also jeopardy record breaker Amy Schneider is here and shes got new memoir. The book called in the form of a question. And it is super good i have to say. All that and more coming up at 7 00. All right. Tony. Time now for the money watch report. U. S. Job openings rose unexpectedly in august. Thats according to the new data from the department of labor signaling the labor market remains tight. U. S. Employers posted 9. 6 million jobs in august and thats up from 8. 9 million in july and hires though went up a bit to just over 5. 8 million increase of only about 35,000. Some Federal Reserve officials have expressed openness to another Interest Rate increase this year in the Central Banks efforts to curb inflation. Its a somber day here in the bay area as services will begin soon to attribute to the late senator Dianne Feinstein. History unfolded last night as politicians looked on. For the First Time Ever the house of representatives fired it leader in the middle of a term. And this morning, were joined by david mccueen Political Science chair at Sonoma State University to talk about more mccarthys downfall and of course the legacy of Dianne Feinstein. Good morning to you, david. Why dont we focus on mccarthy first . . What wouldld say were the biggest issues that ultimately led to his demise. The biggesest issues is if y look at what happened in american politics say in the next 10, 12 years really beginning with the Tea Party Election in 2010. The Republican Caucus and republican members have moved farther and farther to the right. That made it difficult for john boehner, for obviously speaker ryan. It made it difficult for Kevin Mccarthy. So the rules he had to set forth. The agreements he had to put forth in early january really led to his demise. Then the agreement put forth to keep the government operating three hours before that deadline on saturday to have fleet week here in San Francisco. As an example. That agreement seems to be the breaking point. And that led to his ouster. It is phenomenal. Because what you have is chaos going on within the house. It was clear yesterday morning that Kevin Mccarthy would not last the day or the week. And so now it t looks like what are the alternatives and where to go and and we also face another potential Government Shutdown for funding here inin less than 40 days and also face a debt limit and obviously an election next year. Just a phenomenal time just posed against the loss of a political giant last week in Dianne Feinstein. You saiding the word chaos, it just seems like so much dysfunction and infighting thats happening in washington right now. And you know, what is next at this point . I know representative Patrick Mchenry isstepping into the role temporarily. But someone that could make take on that role or be the next person to do this that maybe both side of the aisle might come in more agreement. Ask a better 64,000 question because thats the question right . Who wants to manage the chaos caucus . Look, there will be a talent show for potential speaker on the republican side on tuesday. Therell be a speaker vote next wednesday. Early favorite has to be somebody like Steve Scalise. He is in the Leadership Team from louisiana and the problem is many republicans dont want to vote for Steve Scalise because hes fighting blood cancer. Theyre worried about that kind of moving forward. And in addition you have to look at someone like tom cole. From oklahoma anand also i in mccarthyhys leadershipip team. It t l i wou look around kind of the second tier but theres no mechanism. So you could see a couple of weeks of chaos here going on for republicans. Juxtaposed with the former president in a courtroom in new york with candidates on the trail tryingn to get thatat gop nomination. This all feeds into the democratic kind of narrative that republicans equal chaos while gas prices go up. While thisis economic pocketbook concerns. This is setting up jujust a heck of f an election next year. With uncertainty in the state kind of abounding here in the near term if not over the next say couple of weeks, even months. David, thank you so much for joining us and obviously well check back in with you a little bit later. Thank you. Thank you so much. And of course well ask you later on about your thoughts on Dianne Feinstein. But just to hear all i mean when you hear the words chaos, dysfunction, infighting. As a voter and person whos outward looking in it makes you a little concerned especially with the big Political Year coming our way. I think ultimately he lost the trust of those around him. And so when you talk about his demise, theres so many things that go into it. But once you lose trust, thats really difficult to get back. All right, why dont we switch gears and send it over to jessica burch, you are just a few hours away from taking flight with the blue angels. Thats going to be in plane number seven. I cant quite tell, is there beads of sweat on your forehead . Is that what you are doing dabbing sweat. It is. Just excitement. Lets be honest. Im so excited to go out there and fly with the blue angels. Who would have ever thought the army girl was going to fly with the blue angels . Oh my goodness gracious. Im scared of swimming. Quick live look outside right now. Wake up this morning wore sitting in the 50s and a cool start this morning throughout the Santa Clara Valley. Blue skies above us though which is actually great. Heading into this afternoon the blue skies are widespread throughout the bay area and i mean were clearing up and drying up a lot with the next couple of days. We have an offshore wind right now thats actually really helping clear up the skies just in the areas like San Francisco. So that we can have an amazing air show. Like it happened for a reason right . Lets take a look. High pressure is offshore and as that moves its way in, it changes the direction of the wind. It warms us up and boy does it dry us up a lot in this weeks forecast and were noticing that today. Kind of acting like a heat dome heading into this afternoon. Daytime highs today i mean, reflects that. 80s along the coast. 90s in our inland areas. Is it october . Or is it summer . Im a little confused right now but with that like i mentioned the offshore winds are going to become a lot more apparent heading into thursday forecast. So that will keep us nice and clear which gives us beautiful conditions for both friday and saturday. Sunny skies just in time for fleet week and those air shows. But once we head into sunday partly cloudy skies start coming back in. The High Pressure moves out and were talking about 60s. The only day im concerned about right now but hey last year we had one good day of air shows. Anything is better than nothing. Maybe no air show and maybe you want to just spend some time in the local community. Today, tomorrow, just keep in mind it going to be a warm one for us, in the north bay, were talking about 90s up near wine country. 80s into San Francisco. 70s along the coast near half monobay actually this afternoon. And once we head all the way into the Santa Clara Valley you can goes it. We are also warming up into the 90s and upper 80s. With more 90s off into the east bay today. It is a warm day for us, this afternoon, and you know, heading into the next couple of days more similar too into the forecast. I want to say this. If you have outdoor plans, scheduled for today or tomorrow or the kids have sports afterschool for example, make sure they are hydrated and wearing sunscreen. The sun is definitely sticking around. The uv rays will be strong in the afternoon hours and not until next week where we cool back down to the 70s with partly cloudy skies in the inland areas and a very similar trend for the heart of the bay, oakland, San Francisco all of us are warming up just to cool down into next week. Over to you, g. All right. Jess, thank you. Taking a look at the roadways right now. Getting up early and getting out the door, getting busy especially on bay area bridges and getting a little crowded here at the Golden Gate Bridge. Were seeing that extra volume southbound 101. Out of marin county. As you head over into San Francisco. And certainly getting just a little crowded too. Southbound as you head across the Golden Gate Bridge into the city. As far as visibility goes, its not too bad. Its the fog actually pretty clear today. So thats good news if you are making your way across the span there. Still backed up at the bay bridge toll plaza, it will be like this at least through 9 00 this morning. Thats just kind of how it is for anyone making that ride over into San Francisco. Metering lights were turned on about 5 35 this morning and thats a slow ride and gets even busier in the next hour. That 7 00 hour is always our busiest ride for the morning commute and starting to backup just a bit as well at the san mateo bridge. You can see all the cars working their way westbound over towards 101. About 20 minutes between the nimitz and the peninsula. Nicole . Time now 6 55. Heres a live look outside on a special day. The sun is rising as we pay tribute to Dianne Feinstein. Well be right back. Heres whats happening in the bay area thisweekend. Native sheila e.
