Activity in and around that area. Its still quite early as far as the volume of traffic we could see out there at this time of this morning but again with that closure and depeppedding how long it will be out there it could cause a pretty significant backache. The lanes that connector road is completely shut down due to the fatal crash and again that will be out there sometime for the investigation. I want to update you on the accident along 880. Quite a few brake lights on the nimitz freeway this morning in oakland due to a crash involving a big rig and two other vehicles. They just opened all lanes 880 is finally clear. The crash was out there for several hours overnight but its moving along there in both directions. Amanda . Right now firefighters in hawaii are battling wildfires on the island of maui. Confirmed number of People Killed jumped overnight now standing at 36. The worst damage is in the Historic Town of la haina where entire neighborhoods are just completely destroyed. Oh my gosh, look at the harbor. A view from a private helicopter provides a smoky view of the scope of the destruction there. I mean you can see it right there. The flames are fueled by strong winds from a hurricane that passed well south of the hawaiian islands. Thousands of people ran for sheller and some even jumped into the ocean in a desperate attempt to escape the fire. Not even the worst of it. Still got dead bodies in the water floating and on the seawall. Weve been pulling people out since last night trying to save their lives. Were still trying to assess the amount of damage but the road to recovery will be long. Shelters are packed with residents who have nowhere else to go and we are learning this morning that San Francisco mayor london breed is among the tourists who had to evacuate the island. Thats according to the chronicle. Coming up in a few minutes were going to hear from a bay area family still stranded on maui. Jess, its impacting the air quality right here . Not the fires in hawaii, no. Theres Different Things going on here in the bay area. Here locally, quick look at the air quality this morning, widespread. We have that onshore flow giving us really great air quality along our coast. But in neighborhoods like west oakland, all the way up into el cerrito and even berkeley for that matter waking up to very poor air quality. Take it slow this morning in those local neighborhoods. More north now. The winds sweep their way up to the north, just along the Carquinez Strait even near benicia. Very similar trend. Just keep that in mind this morning as were heading out the door, its cool and foggy and misty out there and i had to use the wipers this morning to get into the station. Temperatures right now very similar to the whole week. Weve been waking up to the upper 50s and lower 60s. Mild for us here. Heres what we can expect across the bay today. Later into this afternoon, if you live along the coast you are really not going to see too much of temperature change. Still cloudy and cool and still 60s right . But then in the inhand areas also very similar to yesterday, we are warming up in the upper 80s, nice and mild and even a little warm for us off into the east inland hills where we could see some 90s closer to fairfield and antioch and brentwood the usual suspects right . Whats going on for the rest of us here in the bay area . When it comes to the marine layer, because its really thick right now along our coast. Causing some visibility issues with some patchy fog here or there. Just around lunchtime notice how it pulls back but its still covering the Golden Gate Bridge and even the bay bridge. Takes just a little bit longer for it to kind of dissipate in the heart of the bay. Then by the late evening hours it fills its way back in which thats what we have tomorrow morning. Amanda . All right, into the top stories now. The two robo Taxi Companies that keep taking heat for blocking traffic could bypass the safety concerns for good today. To give cruise and waymo free reign to operate around the clock today in San Francisco. But weve also seen plenty of video of confused cars coming to stops blocking regular and emergency traffic. Because of that experts say the safety of the Driverless Cars is not totally clear. The key issue with safety right now is getting more data. And more publicly available data. At this point, the companies that are working on this have a lot of data that they retain in private. That they dont share publicly. And i think in order to gain the considered of our government officials, and of the general public, its going to be necessary to share more data. About whats really happening. In total, San Francisco city officials said they have documented about 600 incidents involving selfdriving cars. Well, over in Contra Costa County investigators are looking into a possible murder suicide at a home in danville. Several ambulances showed up to the home on lakewood circle Late Afternoon yesterday. No word on exactly what happened inside that home or how many people died. But investigators said theres no ongoing threat to the public now. Multiple cars a big rig and hundreds of protesters blocked one side of state route 134 in glendale to call attention to the crisis in art sock. The closure affects the freeway at Central Avenue and will be in place until chp can clear out the crowd. The group is demanding congressman adam schiff to do more to stop the the landlocked area that connects the two countries. All right, oakland right now. Fire still burning near the citys port and people even in neighboring cities cannot escape the smell. The fire arted around 6 00 p. M. Yet at a recycling center onembarcadero west. It was under control just before 10 00 p. M. But clearly the smoke still affecting many people. Shawn chitnis live at the alameda ferry. Shawn, what are you seeing there . Reporter well, good morning. And it is quite the sight here and also mention that coming flu oakland to get to the location, you could absolutely smell something even inside your car. So lets me step away here and you can get a better sense of what were talking about. We can see the flames from where we are and the thick smoke that is coming out from that collection of scrap metal there as well as the attempt by the crews that are still on site trying to put that out. Now take a look at what we were dealing with yesterday. And what people were noticing last night in oakland. When they say that that distinct smell hit them right away even when indoors and again its heavy equipment right now as well as last night. That was helping firefighters to get ahold of this huge fire coming from a mountain of scrap metal at snitter steel and this is near the port of oakland. First reports early wednesday afternoon and even people in the evening at Jack London Square in oakland noticed the smell of smoke inside a restaurant. When we came in, they didnt tell us that it was smoke or anything. And they didnt mention it. And the only time we noticed it is when we saw it. And smelled it. And the people in back of us told us that it had been going on all afternoon. Reporter and so air quality advisory has urged people to stay inside with their doors and windows closed. Some people were even offered masks by businesses at Jack London Square last night. Certainly understandable again as you are out here noticing that smell moving around through parts of oakland. A hazmat team from the Fire Department was testing the air quality and were going to check back to see if we have any updates from them this morning. Back to you. Thank you so much. Now back to the devastating wildfires on the island of maui in hawaii. Visitors being urged to leave as soon as possible. But thats easier said than done. Our sara donchey has details on a bay area family. Reporter the stewart familys dream hawaiian vacation took quite turn leaving them to improvise in a way none of them expected. Not camping, but we have plenty of food and we have made a trip to costco as we came into maui and were set with water and food and you know had stuff to barbecue with. Even had our own utensils, we were ready. Reporter thats because daniel along with his wife sandra and three daughters followed the Evacuation Order issued by the hotel. Theyre among 4,000 tourists who were forced to evacuate due to the intense fires. Unfortunately, not everybody was. Some folks were stranded and some folks didnt have supplies you know. As usual stores ran out of water. Ran out of supplies. Et cetera. And then early this morning, at about 4 00, the hotel staff issued a recommend to evacuate for a mandatory evaccame. The fires were getting closer. And so then we evacuated around the north end of maui back to the vicinity of the airport where we are now. Reporter they plan to fly back home to the bay area thursday and for sandra, the destruction on maui feels particularly personal. My grandfather was 100 native hawaiian. And so its very personal for me especially. Because i feel like the island is really taking a hit. I mean, to lose so much that was burned in la h aaina village and the and we heard that the boats that we were just on two days ago are now completely burned all of them. They were all docked there in the village area there. Off the pier. And yeah, i mean, its really sad; theres a lot of history. We would really ask for prayer for the residents and the people traveling and we ran into people from all over the world. Reporter and it isnt just people returning to the bay area who are stranded. Some folks from hawaii are stuck here too. Flying in from denver from our annual road trip, and upon landing here in San Francisco, find out all the flights to maui are canceled. Now we live on maui. We just want to get home. But theres no flights going into maui. Reporter allen and his friend bob say theyre anxious to get home and like many others who braved cancellations and delays, theyre hoping to try again thursday. We on a ten day road trip you know longing to get home. I mean you live in hawaii. You want to get home. On the bay area beat now, this morning, car breakins across the bay area have become an epidemic and now theres a hightech twist to how thieves may be picking their targets. John ramos reports on the sneaky way burglars are finding Electronics Even hidden out of sight. Reporter okay, all leave your car in a parking lot to run an errand knowing it will just take a minute. Most people know better than to leave Electronic Devices in plain sight and we stick them in the glove box or in the seat and when you come back the phone or laptop is gone. Was it really just bad luck . Well, were aware of a trend where thieves are using Bluetooth Technology to track down Electronic Devices that are being left inside of cars. Reporter downloaded a common bluetooth locator app. But thieves are using it for a different purpose. A thief would take a bluetooth scanner much like that and walk up towards the vehicle and we can see changing signal strength on bluetooth devices. And by Walking Around a vehicle, i can often target where that device might be located. And its approximate signal strength to know im going tosteal from this vehicle, another not eke. Reporter we tried it in the parking lot and you can see how the signal strengths are changing as we drive closer or further from vehicles. Thats how thieves are able to hone in on hidden devices. I have never heard of that before. But it doesnt surprise me. Yeah. Some smart thieves out there. Reporter luckily, the solution is simple. Just turn off bluetooth. Or better yet, turn the device off completely because even laptops that are in sleep mode are still giving off a signal. But that may take some getting used to for teenagers justin koshi and visual knewdy valley. We usually have bluetooth on, most of us have air pods on and just always on for us. Now were kind of worried about keeping bluetooth on. Reporter john cassen and josh work in sales and part of the companys territory is in oakland. In just the first week of august, there were 240 burglaries reported citywide and 201 of them were for cars. In some places, its just become accepted. The suburbs, it doesnt happen as often. But you are more large larger cities, i think they shrug it off and it happens. Yeah. Reporter so its just part of life for us now . Yeah. To an extent. Reporter its kind of sad. It is. It is. Reporter but that doesnt mean people have to make it easy for the thieves. Take it with you or turn it off. You may think its hidden away but like so many things in the online world. Your device is constantly clamoring for attention. It sure is. Just so you know the Police Departments in San Francisco and oakland and san jose and vallejo issued an alert last week about the use of bluetooth in car breakins. All right, a check on the weather now with first alert meteorologist jessica birch. And that cooler weather is feeling really nice. Really is. I wish it could last into this weekend and into next week. But we do have a big warmup around the corner and lets Start Talking about what we can expect today though. Some kids are back to school today and some kids are back to school heading into next weeks forecast. And were going to be seeing a very different setup for anyone going out there to recess. Just into the afternoon hours, lets break apart the forecast heading into in next couple of days and starting off this morning it was a little bit misty for me this morning driving in to work just throughout the peninsula. Dealing with the very, very thick marine layer that is just kind of sitting really still over us. Were going to continue to see that stretch its way out into the bay area even up into napa and concord area until around 11 30. Notice how it starts to taper off and bleeds off as the sun set rises above us excuse me and then the marine layer holding on tight to the coastline into the evening hours tonight. Where daytime highs today throughout the Santa Clara Valley are still nice and mild with all that sunshine down there. With 80s. But we sit below average along the coast. Thanks to all the cloudy skies and all of us are going to see a different picture heading into this afternoon. 64 today in pacifica and upper 80s starting to reach all the way up into antioch. Mild setup for us today like i said below average just closer to pacifica right around average in the east inland hills. Theres a lot to talk about as we head into this weekends forecast. Of Course School starts next week for many kiddos all throughout the bay area. Well get to the monday forecast in just a second. But this weekend, if you want to get out there and have some last summertime activities, santa rosa, the Sonoma County fair is going to be a beautiful one with upper 80s in sight just by sunday. Here we go over into stern grove, where its going to be also a beautiful one. Low 60s and partly cloudy skies. But you guys are going to be competing with outside lands happening this weekend too. Only a day pass or if you have not picked it out yet and still trying to figure out which day to go. With weather, sunday is going to be the most warm but its still kind of cool. Think about it this way of course the Golden Gate Park is closest to that coastline so were going to be seeing the marine layer really fill its way in first which then pull its way back superlate into the evening hours. Going to be a cloudy one heading into this weekend. A quick look at whats going on throughout the rest of the bay area. 80s for now and 90s heading into this weekend and suddenly close to the triple digits for the inland east bay and even hit it in certain pockets like antioch and fairfield and even brentwood but next week notice how it lasts. So were going to be seeing a warm setup for many, many kiddos off into the east bay next week. 70s expected for us in San Francisco as we head into next week. Compare that to the 60s now. Not too much of a change right . It will feel a little bit nicer but update youen that sunnier skies mixed with partly cloudy conditions up in the north bay for the next couple of days. Gianna . All right, thank you. Taking a look at the roadways right now. Were going to start off with a Traffic Alert that will affect your drive if you are coming out of san jose. Maybe into Mountain View this morning. There is a crash unfortunately one person died in this accident. There is still a lot going on in and around that area. This is south 101 right at the 85 connector. So Mountain View. The best locator as you head through there. That will be closed for the investigation. And no word yet when the lanes will open up and again this has been out there for several hours. One, possibly two cars were involved in the crash. One person was taken to the hospital but again sadly one person died in the crash. Be extra careful on the roadways this morning and make sure to watch your speeds and leave a lot of distance between you and the car in front of you. Its a little slick in some areas. I traveled along through the city this morning. Coming into work. And it felt a little slick out there so just be careful. All right, taking a look at the roadways elsewhere. I want to show you where its looking okay for the morning drive. If you are headed through hayward, no delays along 101 and you are clear across the bay bridge and in fact the bridges are looking pretty good with exception of the Golden Gate Bridge. It might be a little slick out there and we did get word of foggy spots on the north end overnight. Might be still out there a little bit as you travel along the area out of marin county. The niners are stacked on defense this year with talent up front. And in the secondary. But one of their playmakers also has a hidden talent. Well show you in this mornings red and gold report. Were taking a live look outside near the port of oakland right now. Just take a look at this. That fire still smoldering from a recycling facility. We are staying on top of it all morning long. Shawn chitnis is live at the scene and well get back with him in just a minute after this break. All right, welcome back. Its no secret that the 49ers have one of the most talented rosters in the nfl. But what you may not know is that one of the niners Fan Favorites has a hidden talent. I am intrigued by this. Right here on kpix 5. Last week, i caught up with linebacker fred warner who might have been using his down time to work on his other hobby. Did you know how to juggle . You know how to juggle, vern . I do not. But i can watch. No . Come on man, its so easy. Just like that one after another. You toss them up like that. You cant do that . Reporter fun fact about warner. Hes a great juggler. So good, in fact, you will see him juggling footballs on the practice field. Hows that for hand eye coordination . Theres a reason these guys are professionals. Fred called me out. Yeah, i have got some work to do. Give it a try, lets see it vern. Just indo you have to toss one you have with the left hand and catch it with the the other hand. Uhoh, uhoh, you have to start somewhere. You can do it like this, just trying to toss it back and forth with one hand. Try that out. Reporter jeez. No. Okay. Were right there. Were going to work on it, vern. Reporter i suck, fred. I suck. With the red and gold report, im vern glenn. Its okay. I just need a little practice, you can see all the 49ers preseason games right here on cbs news bay area starting sunday. Meanwhile, our Juliette Goodrich and vern will be reporting live from las vegas starting today. In fact juliette was already there. Hey there, Juliette Goodrich here just arrived at the las vegas airport. Were going to start our preseason coverage of the niners and the raiders, it was a great flight. A little bumpy but i met some friends on the flight and niners fans already heading down here today. They let me get some video and they had some hats on and they took a nap. At the airport now. All right, ill have that story for you guys coming up tonight. But i am in raiders territory now. Its okay juliette, you are going to be fine. All right, 5 26. Stanford and cal still playing the waiting game this morning. Well explain why the schools are stuck in limbo. Amanda . Plus, taking a live look outside near the port of oakland. Looking at this, that fire still smoldering from a recycling facility. Shawn chitnis is staying on top of this fire right now on cbs news bay area at 35 30. Wildfires on maui in hawaii have killed at least 36 people. And have destroyed entire neighborhoods in the Historic Town of lahaina. Crews are battling blazes in several places on the island. And thousands of residents were forced to evacuate. And some even jumped into the ocean to try and escape the flames. Maui is of course a popular Tourist Destination and on wednesday, more than 11,000 visitors flew out of the island. But many others still stranded this morning. Well have much more on the devastation in just a couple of minutes. But back here in the bay area, live look at oakland right now. Fire there still burning near the citys port and from what we know, people even in neighboring cities cannot escape the smell of this. The oakland Fire Department said those flames started around6 00 p. M. Yesterday at schnitzer steel. They added it was under control just before 10 00 p. M. But clearly the smoke still affecting many people. Shawn chitnis live at the alameda ferry, many commuters are going to wake up to an air advisory there. And shawn, what are you able to see from your Vantage Point . Reporter well, amanda, when theres not a large ship passing behind us, we do actually have a really clear shot here. Let me step away and you should be able to now see what weve been able to watch for quite some time now. A lot of smoke coming from that site and we can see the flames even from where we are. And so that is why we know that air quality advisory that you mentioned is still in effect. The guidance basically that if you can smell smoke, and that could be in the east bay or even in parts of the south bay, you should stay inside with the doors and windows closed. Now people who were in oakland last night said they noticed a distinct smell right away even when they were indoors and as we continue to see the situation here with the fire we know that heavy equipment had to be brought in to help firefighters to get ahold of the fire. That was because it was coming from whats essentially a mountain of scrap metal. At schnitzer steel and again this is near the port of oakland standing early wednesday afternoon. You can see the smoke just kind of in the air and you can see its going like toward alameda. Reporter so people who were out last night in Jack London Square said they even noticed the smell while they were inside a restaurant. Businesses at that location starting to offer masks last night as one way to try to deal with it but again theres that air quality advisory saying that if you can smell the smoke, you should stay inside. We also know that a hazmat team was called in by the oakland Fire Department to begin testing the air. Checking to see if there are any updates on what theyre finding this morning. Amanda, back to you. And shawn, you know, we said that fire has been burning since 6 00 p. M. Yesterday. Have you heard anything from fire officials about why the flames are so hard to take down. Reporter really important to emphasize the response not onl happening on the land but there are boats that are responding from San Francisco and alameda to try to take on the fire. What the fire chief said last night is that because this is a pile of debris, theyre needing to get that debris moved around and thats why the company has offered its equipment to try and get to the source of the fire. But as of last night, they werent close enough to get to where the fire really started. And thats wh its taking so long. Thank you for the live report. What people are saying on social dia for us. From the bay area were seeing right here, r district large fire at schnitzer steel nearport of oakland. Inspectors are investigating and that plume is expectedto travel south this evening and impact air quality in the immediate vicinity and areas downwind. And obviously follow introductions from local health officials. Are we seeing anything else on there . Al hearing the city of dublin that air quality there very poor due to the chemical fire and obviously keep the doors and windows closed. And we are seeing from this viewer right here, his name is gabe and he says, i think i can actually snell that fire in oakland all the way out in concord. Wow. Okay. You know, i didnt smell it and i live out at the end of walnut creek close to concord. I didnt smell it myself. But i know that it just really depends on where the air flow is moving and you are looking at the air quality map and seeing that it really is impacting a lot of the bay area. Exactly. It is, people waking up this morning from west oakland over into berkeley and even el cerrito. The worst air quality already. Kind of zoom into the air quality map. For the rest of us dealing with the onshore flow great in the grand scheme of things for places like San Francisco and even over into marin. But watch what happens as we zoom into the local neighborhoods and really hazardous air quality just closer to areas like west oakland and ranging like i said up into berkeley and all the way even into el cerrito and seeing the wind continue to track to the north just north of the Carquinez Strait this morning. Even impacting areas like benicia over vallejo. Continue to see the onshore flow this morning alone mostly moving to the north which is guesting because they said later this evening see the smoke plume shift to the south. Thats the reason why yarners the strait also waking up to not the best air quality. Current temperatures right now in the low 60s in oakland. Later this afternoon, forget act 70s. Only staying in the 60s today and its a mild forecast for us. Just in the heart of the bay. But as we head south all the way down into san jose where were starting to see that sun slowly rise over the mountains, were going to warmup just a little bit more. Were going to hit the upper 60s just like oakland around 10 00 a. M. But then we warm up into the upper 70s and lower 80s today. Thats the case all throughout the Santa Clara Valley so prepare for mild weather there. It is still cloudy and cool for us in the heart of San Francisco. That marine layer holding on tight and even allowing for some mist and some drizzle this morning. I noticed that on the way to work. Low 60s today along the coast and the bay. Upper 80s off into the east inland hills. Gianna . All right, jessica thank you. Start off with a live look at 880 nimitz freeway near the coliseum as you travel through oakland and im keeping a close eye on 80 to see any slowdowns. We did have a big rig crash that was blocking several lanes in oakland and now cleared out of lanes. However, because of the fire not too far from here, as the sun starts coming up you might see those smoke the plumes of smoke as you are traveling. That could be a distraction for drivers on the freeways. So just something to think about as you hilt the roads this morning if you come up on brake lights unexpectedly. That could be why. Well watch it and let you know if things get slow through the area. Traffic alert still no word from chp when lanes will open up south 101 connector to south 85. That hov lane is still completely shut down due to an investigation and unfortunately one person died in this crash. So be extra careful on the roadways as you travel this morning. Especially through areas like the Golden Gate Bridge where its a little foggy and a little wet on the surfaces due to the mist this morning. Amanda . Right now in hawaii, fastmoving wildfires have killed at least 36 people on the island of maui and those flames have destroyed entire neighborhoods in the Historic Town of lahaina. Jarred hill has more on the disaster thats forced thousands of people out of their homes. Reporter a piece of paradise, lost. Reporter historic lahaina once the capital of the hawaiian kingdom. Incinerated. The flames were fueled by strong winds from hurricane dora. The storm passing well south of the hawaiian islands. Were still trying to assess the amount of damage, but the road to recovery will be long. Oh my gosh. Reporter from ricky olsons helicopter a smoky view of the scope of destruction. According to officials, nearly 300 structures burned to the ground. I have lived on maui for 52 years and never seen anything one oneth as the devastation there. Reporter as visitors wait in long lines at airports trying to get off the island, shelters are packed with residents who have nowhere else to go. Though help begins to pour in, there are concerns that mauis relative isolation could make recovery that much more difficult. So for all the latest developments from hawaii and more of the dramatic images you can head to kpix. Com. Just devastating for all those People Living there. All right, lets go to a developing story right now. Atlantic coast president s have chosen not to vote on whether to include stanford and cal to the league. But no matter what. Evening hours tonight. Try to get out there and get some fresh air and maybe go to the local park and maybe take the bikes around the neighborhood. This is a great forecast for us heading into thursday setup. Partly cloudy skies and you know what that marine layer really holding on tight to the peninsula this morning. Continue to see the trend really splitting the peninsula heading into this afternoon. Watch what happens just around lunchtime. We see it pull back along the coast. That thick cloud layer. But then just around 4 00, just like clockwork, its almost like a half and half. Right . Were seeing a cloudy side of San Francisco near the presidio and richmond area and then the sunnier side closer to the fidi in the 5 00 hour for dinner time actually and heres what we have heading into in weekend. Well watch this closely. Right now taking 101 itself, its moving at an okay pace. Golden gate bridge, you know, traffic is pretty light. Well, over the summer Governor Newsom signed a new bill that will require Public School students to undergo screening for dyslexia. Kelsi thorud spoke to one family about how their lives would be different if the program had actually been in place earlier. Reporter this summer, california joined 40 other states by signing a bill into law that now mandates students who are in grades kindergarten through second grade to be screened for dyslexia. Its a Long Time Coming for advocates who have been fighting for screenings like this for close to a decade. I spoke with one family who says that if their son had been screened at a young age, his experience in school would have been much different. It was really confusing. And it was really difficult. Because he was angry. And he was anxious. Reporter ten years ago, when jennifer selmas son reese was entering kindergarten. She quickly noticed that something was off. You know there was a little bit of like yes, you know, i know his reading is you know, were making sure that hes on track. We dont see anything any issues there. Reporter but jennifer says despite what teachers were telling her, she knew reese was really struggling. It eventually got so bad, that by the time reese was in third grade, he started refusing to go to school. He would start monday happy to go to school. He would walk to school with his brother. And by wednesday, i would find him up to maybe go upstairs to pull him out. Hed be under the bed. Reporter reese says he remembers that time vividly. He felt confused and angry because he didnt know why he was struggling. And he could tell the adults around him didnt know either. When you are just expected to know how to be able to do you know, this things that you cant, and not no one understands whats happening, you your parents and your teachers, and anyone, its just hard. Reporter jennifer says at that point, her family knew something had to be done. So they paid for a private screening. It was the results of that screening that showed reese wasdyslexic. Jennifer told me she was happy to finally have an answer to what was going on. But because the diagnosis came so late, she says reese was so far behind in learning that she had no choice but to pull him out of Public School and put him in a special private school just for students with dyslexia. And that was really hard. Because we had a Great Community school. He loved his friends. He could walk to school. Reporter reese spent two years at that Specialized School before transferring back to Public School. Its something jennifer believes may not have had to happen if only reese would have been screened right when he entered kindergarten. If it had been done when he was much longer he would have been able to capture a lot more and learn much more quickly. Reporter thats why for years after jennifer along with many other parents of dyslexic children, fought to try and get the state to mandate dyslexia screenings for all students entering grade school. And this summer she finally won. California became the 41st state to mandate dyslexia screenings for students in grades k2nd. Its really thrilling, its really, really exciting. Reporter reese is now entering his sophomore year of high school. And doing better than ever. He loves math and science, and finally has the tools he needs to thrive in the classroom. I feel great. I mean, i can i finally have figured out how i learn and how to advocate for myself in front of my teachers. Reporter jennifer told me shes never been more proud of reese. It took a lot for her family to get to this point and thats why shes so happy other families will have a resource she never did. A resource she hopes will help families avoid the stress hers endured but more importantly a resource that will help every child like reese, thrive, from the very start. Hes an amazing amazing young man. Very proud of him. And you know, hes been through a lot. But hes coming on to other side. Reporter advocates say the screenings are really just a first step. They also want to see more resources in the classroom for dyslexic students and also want to see more education for teachers on how to best support these students. Time right now 5 51.
