And while they do that, crime is spiking in oakland. The naacp has called for a state of emergency. Just this week, Governor Newsom announced hell be sending chp officers to oakland to tackle crime. John ramos has more on the search for a police chief. Reporter the firing of police chief armstrong was a complicated political affair, but now that the Police Commission is tasked with finding his replacement, their invoking the will of the people to help make their selection. At Community Forums this weekend and next, the Oakland Police commission is seeking public input as they begin the search for a new person to lead the department. Weve all seen that this is a challenging job that comes with a lot of, sort of, um, political dynamics. Reporter that was only increased by the way the former chief was let go. Despite having considerable support, especially in the African American community, armstrong was fired by the mayor before the Police Commission could even express their views on his performance. Do you feel like the wants and needs of the people have been part of the consideration when you talk about the politics behind this in the past . Always. But that said, we havent gone out of our way to ask them. We think this is what they need, believe this is what they need. Reporter so now theyre asking. And the turnout at the first forum was pretty small, but people expressed views from confidence in the police to doubts about them. I think the police are mayor more in tune with what needs to go on, as does the community, but we tend to not. Police chiefs rise up without training on how to efficiently and effectively administer the funds. Its not the job of the police to do everything. Its the job of the police to do their job and hand things off to the people equipped to do Mental Health issues and deal with poverty. Whoever is chosen, give them the opportunity to prove they can get the job done and not come in with a lot of negativity or blame so they make the job even harder than what it already is. It needs to be an African American that grew up here and came up through the ranks. You cant come from the outside in and be accepted. Thats the way oakland is. The Oakland Police department has been under federal oversight for the past two decades and has gone through ten Police Chiefs in the last ten years. A Contra Costa County spa is under investigation over a possible link of two legionnaires disease case they were shut down yesterday after inspectors revealed the businessnever issued a permit foa spa or a pool. Health Officials Say the two people that died visited the spa just days before becoming sick. Legionnaires presents as a form of eumonia and can lead to hospitalization. Its commonly found in lakes and streams and fresh water sources, however, it can cause a severe form of pneumonia when you breathe in contaminated water droplets like mist in a hot tub. Individuals that come down with symptoms like fevers, chills, cough, trouble breathing who may have attended this spa in the previous two weeks, please alert your health care provider. A third person was infected after using the tub at the spa in june, but is okay. Preliminary results on samples taken from the water at the spa are expected early next week. The drug crisis continues to plague the bay area. The San Francisco police say the total amount of Illegal Drugs seized this year have exceeded last years, and its also become a battle for the regions largest transit system. Reporter this is one way bart is responding. 19 crisis intervention specialists are part of the effort to deploy as many different uniformed bodies as possible, both to respond to people in trouble, and as a deterrent to keep the drugs out. Police officers, crisis intervention specialists, fare inspectors, Community Service officers. We commit more uniformed personnel to our trains and stations. Reporter not only are they trying to get more people in more place, bart leadership is hoping some of this is mitigated with new fare gates. But managing the drug challenge is becoming something of an old problem. I just got to pull out the camera and show my friends this. They wont leave believe it. Every bart staff member you see while traveling is now equipped with narcan, and theyre using it every few days, sometimes several times in a single day to revive passengers that might otherwise be the next fatality. Again, its happening everywhere. Bart says their average Response Time to a reported overdose is about four minutes, however. We cant be everywhere all the time.
