Police in the south bay searching for a motive after a double homicide. A boy and his grandmother were killed in their apartment. Recent shootings on bay area freeways are prompting drivers to change their routes. A fire erupts at a famous bakery in business for more than a century. Thanks to quick action, firefighters stopped the bakery from burning down. Good morning. Great to have you with us today. Im max darrow. Devin is off. Today is saturday, august 5th. A quick check of the weather with first alert meteorologist paul heggen. A return of the heat dome. We will get back to near average temperatures next week. This morning temperatures in the 50s. We will warm up quickly. By noon the inland temperatures will be up to a mix of 70s and a lot of 80s. 80s and 90s inland. 60s and 70s for highs around the bay. A 6yearold boy was playing outside of a san jose apartment complex thursday. Now the area is lined with police tape after neighbors tell us he and his grandmother were killed there. Police are trying to figure out who would harm them and why. Reporter as you can see, officers are investigating this tragic crime scene. Police say they came out to this apartment complex to do a welfare check. That is when they found the woman and her 6yearold grandson dead. I would say around 12 00, 12 30 i heard he is dead. He is head. Reporter jose sanchez lived her for years. He was shocked when he found out a double homicide happened near his home. Officers surrounded this apartment complex and had a command center set up outside the unit where it happened. Chopper 5 captured footage of the scene parallel to the 280 freeway. Sanchez says he knew one of the victims well. The 6yearold boy had a huge personality and made friends with many of his neighbors. The little boy was known. Everybody knew the little boy. He runs around and plays with the other kids. Reporter the San Jose Police department isnt releasing a lot of details on why the incident happened and whether or not a suspect is in custody. Many of the neighbors are devastated to see a young life taken so soon. I feel bad. When i heard it, i spoke to him yesterday, you know. Its sad. He is young. His whole life is ahead of him. Officers are expected to be out here as they collect the evidence from the crime scene. San jose police tell us that they will release more information early next week. Sorry about the technical difficulties there. An 8yearold boy will not have the life his family imagined after he was struck by a stray bullet. His mother says he is paralyzed and will need around the clock medical care. The family shared this photo on a fundraising website. His mother was driving on 580 last month when the car was caught in the middle of a rolling gun battle. A bullet hit the young boy. Freeway shootings are more common. Dalin spoke to a woman that survived being shot on the freeways. Reporter freeways are battle grounds for gangs and independents of road rage. There have been more than 400 shootings in the bay area since 2020. Freeways how people get around, go to work and go for groceries. The repeated shootings are scaring the public. Our home backs up to 580. We are on it constantly. Its a thought i have ever time i get on the freeway. Reporter local residents avoid the road if possible. I used to honk if someone cut me off or speed up and get eye contact. Now, i just let people go about their day. Not only would we not honk, we dont look to see. Reporter one freeway shooting survivor says she drives mostly in the slow lanes. She protected her identity because the case is open. I signal, look over my shoulder before i change lanes. I quote, unquote do all the same things. But that split second decision nearly ended up costing me my life. This person hunted me for close to a minute dodging traffic so he could pull into the shoulder and try to kill me. Reporter i interviewed her a couple of weeks ago. The chp called it a road rage incident. Multiple bullets hit her car. One struck her right leg. It happened on 280 in San Francisco. The same day the 8yearold boy was paralyzed by a stray bullet on 580. Investigators say the two cases are not connected. I will be thinking about him every day. I am lucky to be alive. His outcome is so different. Reporter many drivers like leann and alonzo say given how dangerous freeways have turned into, they support freeway cameras. I used to think cameras were more trouble. But now it could solve more shootings and murders. Reporter no arrests in the two july 14th freeway videos. They are asking tesla drivers to come forward because they have built in cameras. No arrests yet but anybody with information about the particular shootings are being asked to come forward, especially people with the teslas as they have the cameras built into the cars. The San Francisco archdiocese has so many abuse claims against it it will probably go bankrupt. The archbishop made the announcement that chapter 11 bankruptcy is likely. That would enable them to handle all the cases as a group instead of individually. There are more than 500 lawsuits pending for sexual abuse. A close call for a legendary italian bakery in San Francisco. A fire broke out at laguria yesterday. It started in one of the ovens in the building located on stockton street around 11 00. There were concerns that it could spread to the residential units above the bakery but firefighters contained it within 30 minutes and saved the bakery. An old brick oven. The flame must have affected the walls. It has been here since 1911 and a staple of northeast. A voicemail recording said it business will be closed until further notice. Well, its not unusual to see a viral video of a brazen robbery. An attempted theft at a 7eleven in stockton is getting attention. Workers tried to take matters in their own hands. Some people are asking if the workers went too far. We want to warn you that the video may be difficult to watch. Reporter the beating seen in the viral video is under investigation by the stockton Police Department. The more than five minute clip shows a man emptying shelves of cigarettes into a trash can. Nothing you can do. And then, you know, let him take and go. Reporter store clerks stepping in. A bystander recorded the tens moments. The 7eleven is on south Center Street in stockton. Its a half mile away from the business coowned by the man who took the video who wanted to be identified as data. Hopefully everyone learns in this situation. Reporter he said he was stopping by the 7eleven for red bull and gas when he saw the masked man go behind the counter. When the guy was done, he tried to bypass the other employee. The other employee grabbed him and grabbed the stick. Reporter in the clip the man is hit more than two dozen times. This is enough. Then they kind of stopped and i was narrating the situation. Stockton police say someone from the business eventually called police. Officers took a report and are investigating. There have been multiple Mountain Lion sightings in the north bay the last couple of days. The latest friday morning in napa valley. An energetic Mountain Lion sprinting through a yountville neighborhood. Deputies say this was seen near jefferson add madison around 6 00 in the morning. That is close to restaurant row. On thursday, people spotted a cougar in petaluma. The Mountain Lions are appearing in your area, keep your pets inside. If you see one, dont approach it. Neighbors in South Lake Tahoe the target of unusual home invasions can breath a bit of a sigh of relief this morning thanks to wildlife biologists. They captured the burglar that terrorized the community for years. Brady has the story. Reporter this bear and her cubs are known to the south Lake Community as being one of the bears referred to as hank the tank. To fish and wildlife, she is known as 64 f. Using dna testing, she and her cubs were linked to 20 breakins deeming her problematic. That is significant. Its a learned behavior. It doesnt look like something that could be rehabilitated. That usually means the bear would have to be put down. The department of fish and wildlife worked out a deal with an Animal Sanctuary in colorado where she will live out the rest of her life but her cubs have a different fate. No hope we could release that into the wild. There is hope to release the cubs into the wild. Reporter the bear family will be split up, the cubs will go to a rehab center to relearn how to live in the wild. Santuary life is not ideal. Getting them back in the wild is the best plan. Reporter it beats the alternative. This rarely happens. Bears are not relocated, they are killed when they are designated as problem bears. Reporter executive director says the alternative is a gift. This is not going to happen everyday. Reporter tahoe residents must learn from it. Step up, lock your doors, lock the windows. Dont let them in, dont put bird feeders out or leave garbage out. The first weekend in august bringing typical temperatures. Toasty today, hot tomorrow. A brief heat wave. The peak of the heat occurs heading through next week. We have been lucky. Other parts of the country have been cooking throughout the summer, our heat waves have been somewhat intense but fairly short. That minimizes the overall heat risk. It will be hot inland on sunday, especially for inland parts of the east bay, trivalley and delta up to around 100 degrees evidence by livermore. Look how fast the temperatures drop off. Most of next week, slightly below temperatures for baby warm up for the second weekend of august. Beyond that timeframe, the six to 10day outlook shows a trend to above normal temperatures and eight to 14 day shows a stronger signal to above average reading. Indications in the long range data maybe a more prolonged spell of hot weather could be settling in, not just the bay other or california but much of the western u. S. Mid0s for oakland and the east bay with mid to upper80s for most of the north bay until you go farther north. Inland temperatures reach up to the 90s basically from santa rosa and northward. If you are heading out to the battle of the bay, it will be a 4 00 game. This is a little off here. Temperatures starting off in the mid70s. Then toasting downwards. Two orlando Police Officers are in the hospital in Critical Condition following a shooting late last night. They were shot during a traffic stop. The shooting happened around 11 00. They stopped the car as part of a homicide investigation. The suspect in the car opened fire, carjacked a second vehicle then took off. Police are searching for the shooter this morning. We have two officers in Critical Condition. This is a sad day for our department. For the suspect out there, we will find you and you will be brought to justice. The orlando Police Department has not released any information about the officers shot or the suspects involved yet. Several other local agencies are on the job this morning searching for the suspects. A former Police Officer in columbus, ohio, has been charged with murder and reckless homicide for the see shooting of an unarmed black man last year. A grand jury indicted Ricky Henderson for the 2022 killing of donovan lewis. Anderson shot and killed lewis during a search warrant while lieu sis was unarmed and in bed. Anderson almost immediately opened fire after opening the bedroom door to where lewis was sleeping. The defense tried to say that lewis was holding a weapon but it was a vape pen. He retired in bad standing months after the shooting. This chaotic scene after a give away by an internet personality got out of hand. Police say several officers and young people were injured. Dozens were taken into custody. Bradley blackburn has the latest. Reporter the last safe crowd formed in minutes. Thousands of young people who showed up for a play station give away planned and promoted by kai cenat, an internet streamer with thousands of followers. This has major implications for Upcoming Elections set to be held later this year. Several are injured after a bus in idaho crashed on a winding highway. That bus was carrying 30 passengers from a ymca summer program. It rolled over on the highway with a group of teens and camp counselors riding on board. 11 were injured. Several critically. Wade in 2022. Abortion rights supporters see the case as a potential blueprint to weaken restrictions in other states. Mothers struggling with postpartum depression may find relief in the storm of a pill. The trial results showed women with severe postpartum depression given the pill daily over the course of two weeks had improvements. The women given the medication saw symptom relief in as early as three days and reported up to 45 days later. Once you take the med indication, you recover from depression then the risk of relapse reduces significantly. It is very new.
