From cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. Flames burn up an east bay hillside this afternoon and we may have a clue as to how this fire started. Plus an inside look at cal fires newest tool to fight nighttime fires. Good afternoon. Im elizabeth cook. Lets get right to that fire in hayward. Anne makovec is following it all for us. Another reminder fire season is here, that brushfire was burning off harder road near west view way in hayward just west of the cal state east bay campus and near dozens of homes on the south side of the city. Our chopper got to the scene quickly and we have some pictures. This is what it looked like moment after that fire broke out. This is around 1 30 this afternoon. You can see the flames on the hillside there. The thick smoke is rising in the air and this is fire crews working to get a handle on those flames, Quick Response there luckily and they just surrounded the burn zone, spraying water along it to stop the fire before it spreads any further. You can see here what looks like an encampment. We still do not know the cause of the fire, but our chopper did see this. Thats right near where the fire had started. You can see some debris scattered on the hillside and that fire just torching through it. We have not heard of any injuries so far and the good news is the fire is contained, but fire crews will be on scene mopping up any hotspots for several hours this afternoon. Meanwhile in santa clara fire crews remain at the scene of the clayton fire which burned very close to homes yesterday. Cal fire says its now 60 contained after it burned 66 acres and forward progress has been stopped. The fire burned fast near clayton road and via de la vista. We dont know what sparked the flames, but fighting those fires while there was still light out has advantages. What about tackling nighttime fires like this one. Heres cal fires newest tool to fight fires in the dark. So this is folsom right here. This is folsom lake, so we train out here quite a bit. Reporter Benjamin Berman is the chief helicopter pilot for cal fire. Hes also the one that is training the other pilots how to fly cal fires new fire hawk helicopters at night. When youre looking through the night vision goggles, you go from about 200 degrees of peripheral vision, now looking through a 40degree field of view. Reporter today berman is showing me how he trains pilots by first using a flight simulator. He says learning to fly at night, even for experienced pilots, can take time. Theres different subconscious movements that you have to acquire when flying on night vision. Reporter before this program cal fire was never able to fight fires aerially at night. Thats because the helicopters they had before the fire hawks were much smaller and didnt have as many safety features. Berman says to think of the difference between the old helicopters and these new ones like you would the difference between an old used car and a brandnew ferrari. Its capable of carrying 1,000 gallons of water where the huey is onethird of that. Its also dual engine. Reporter cal fire believes these new helicopters will be a huge tool in fighting large, dangerous wildfires. Being able to continue to attack the fire at night offers a slew of advantages. The temperature is usually cooler. The wind is slower and the humidity higher. All those major components of fire are to our advantage at night based off of those environmental conditions. Reporter the first night flights launched last year, but cal fire plans to ramp them up as we head towards what is typically the peak of fire season this year. Officials believe these night flights will be critical in saving both homes and lives. Berman himself has already been on some of the flights and told me he cant wait to hop on even more. This is the first season theyre really trying to use this program. Not all the pilots have the capability to fly at night yet. Cal fires goal is to get pilots trained for this. We have another bay area freeway shooting to tell you about. This one happened on eastbound i80 near center in richmond early this morning. At least one vehicle had damage and Authorities Say the shooting may have stemmed from road rage. Luckily no one was injured. Chp is asking anyone with information to come forward. We also have an update on a little boy who was hit by a stray bullet on an oakland freeway last month. 8yearold asa was with his mom on 580 near grand avenue caught between shooters in two cars who were firing back and forth at one another. At last check with chp the suspect vehicles both got away and no one has been arrested. We now know that boy has bullet and bone fragments lodged in his neck and he is paralyzed below the neck. On a fundraising website the family wrote their son needs a respirator to survive communicate is the positive. A note. We are checking with caltrans on the statuses of freeway cameras to potentially catch shootings like these. As of july 21st they said they had 130 installed across the bay area, 50 in oakland, 20 in san leandro, 20 in berkeley, albany, 15 in emeryville, 10 in richmond and 15 in pittsburg. We hope for an update from caltrans soon. Other stories around the bay, in san jose two bodies were found during a welfare check. This happened at a residence along parkmoor avenue. Police say they are still investigating the circumstances. They are not releasing any more information at this time. In san pablo most residents who were evacuated during that hazmat scare have been allowed to return home. Two days ago firefighters found hundreds of boxes full of Hazardous Materials in a backyard shed on stanton avenue. They belonged to a retired chemistry teacher who died about six months ago. There are only five homes still under that evacuation order. They should be allowed to return home later today. A fire broke out at a well known bakery in San Franciscos north beach neighborhood today. Liguria bakery on stockton street, crews got it quickly contained. It was the old brick oven weve had for over 100 some years and partner, i guess, from heating the oven we use a flame and the flame must have affected the walls of the building. There was a large response to this with fire crews coming from across the city. Still ahead, the backstory of this tesla that suddenly caught fire at a dismantling yard. Plus how chemicals used for anesthesia are contributing to Climate Change and the bay area effort to find new ways to deliver care. Weve been in a cool pattern to start august, but temperatures have warmed up significantly today, especially inland in the east bay, about 15 degrees warmer in concord and livermore. The warmup continues into the weekend, details coming up in the first alert forecast. New video out of the sacramento area of a tesla model s that spontaneously caught fire. According to firefighters, this happened at a high end vehicle dismantler in Rancho Cordova this week. The car was salvaged from flooding in florida and had been sitting in the yard several months when it caught fire. They say it was surrounded by high end salvaged cars, including ferraris, lamborghinis and bentleys and could not be moved as that fire burned. On to project earth now, from hip replacements to c sections and even brain surgeries, modern medicine wouldnt be possible without anesthesia, but some of the chemicals used for it can contribute to Climate Change. Heres a look at the industries that emit the most Greenhouse Gases in the country, transportation and power neck and neck at 27 and 25 respectively followed by agriculture at 11 , but the Healthcare Industry is not far behind at 8. 5 . That comes from chemicals like inhaled anesthesia. Now as sara donchey shows us, a major Bay Area Medical Center is pioneering a new path away from some of them. Reporter in her backyard rachel himeed relaxes with her cat leo. Its hard to imagine how years ago rachel was struck by a car and seriously injured. First surgery here. Reporter rachel needed multiple surgeries to repair a severely damaged leg. That required the strongest kind of anesthesia. Oh, my gosh, absolutely necessary. Reporter general anesthesia knocks you out. Youre not aware of the surgery and you dont feel pain, but the inhaled kind presents an unsettling dilemma. Anesthesia gases that we use on a daily basis are potent Greenhouse Gases. Reporter about 5 of Greenhouse Gas emissions in the u. S. Come from the inhaled anesthesia used in operating rooms. That was a big surprise to me. Reporter patients metabolize less than 5 of what they inhale. The rest is vented out of the o. R. And into the atmosphere. I took the oath which said do no harm and some of the very practices are contributing to emissions Climate Change that is affecting the very patients we swore to take care of. Reporter at ucsf Medical Center mount zion, we caught up with two experts. Theyre part of a Pioneering Team on the forefront of a healthcare revolution. The goal to, reduce the use of potent Greenhouse Gases in the o. R. With no impact to the patient. Anesthesia has changed. There are newer drugs, newer technologies, newer ways of delivering the same quality of care. Reporter they took on a tour of the massive Surgical Unit at the Medical Center. Weve made this a priority. Reporter inside each o. R. Different colored medical hoses hang from the ceiling connected to pipe systems embedded in the walls. Each hose delivers a different gas or service to the patient. Whats no longer there . A blue hose that supplied nitrous oxide. As to why . Nitrous oxide stays in the atmosphere for about 140 years. It affects the ozone layer. Reporter its also 274 times more potent as a Greenhouse Gas than carbon dioxide. Because its pressurized, most nitrous oxide never reaches the o. R. The gas leaks from its large storage canister stored outside or in the basement. It also leaks as it travels through the pipe system in the wall. 80 to 90 of the purchased nitrous never made it to Clinical Care delivery. Reporter thats why at mount zion the valve for the nitrous oxide pipe system is shut off and removed. Which means we will no longer have nitrous oxide for the operating room and were transitioning to portable cylinders with nitrous oxide users. Reporter the cylinders will continue to deliver nitrous oxide for labor and delivery and other cases. Rachel thinks its a great idea to rethink anesthesia on a warming planet. So if San Francisco is starting this, i hope other cities can do the same. Reporter helping us all breathe a little easier on the path forward. Two years ago ucsf stopped using a very potent Greenhouse Gas. Scotland recently became the first nation to completely ban it. As for the use of nitrous oxide at the dentist, the California Dental Association told us the smaller cylinders are more common in private dental practices. Lets take a quick break from all that, look at our forecast with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen. It is friday. We cant wait for the weekend to begin. Once again temperatures will peak over the weekend. It seems like every brief heatwave that has visited inland parts of the bay area has occurred friday, saturday, and sunday. This will be saturday, sunday, and monday, but the High Pressure will pinch at us from the southwest and southeast. It means more atmosphere overhead going into the weekend which means temperatures at ground level will be warming up. The air at ground level gets compressed by the weight of the air on top of us. Temperatures will reach the moderate heat risk for many inland parts of the bay area saturday. The orange indicates the moderate heat risk expands significantly sunday, backs down quickly monday. Every heatwave this year so far has been brief. Back to near average temperatures tuesday through friday next week, but the long range data shows a decent chance that might be in for a longer stretch of above normal temperatures. Both the six to tenday outlook and eight to 14day outlook show a significant chance of above normal temperatures, not just around the bay area, but for much of the western u. S. Well monitor in the long range. Todays air quality has been mostly pretty good, more yellow dots inland in the east bay and santa clara valley, but overall good air quality. I think it steps back a little. I dont think well have a lot of smoke blowing down towards us from oregon. Ground level ozone becomes trapped which means mostly moderate air quality for most parts of the bay area saturday, sunday and monday. The weight of the atmosphere is also squashing the marine layer. Temperatures have warmed into the upper 80s in livermore and concord, upper 70s in san jose with mid to upper 60s in San Francisco and oakland, warmer than yesterday. Its nice to see a little sunshine. The fog will push back across the bay. Futurecast shows a big inland push by early tomorrow morning. That might be a little aggressive. Wherever the fog does make its way inland, it wont last long, plenty of sunshine midday through the rest of the day except along the coast. Temperatures tonight mostly dropping into the 50s, familiar territory. High temperatures tomorrow take another step up, a few degrees above average, close to 70 in San Francisco, into the mid70s in oakland with lies inland a mix of 80s and 90s, but the hottest weather is in store for us sunday. Obviously its not going to be that hot near the water, low 70s in San Francisco sunday, close to 80 in oakland and right back down the other side of the roller coaster by monday and tuesday. Inland spots warm up to a much greater extent, close to 90 in san jose, low to mid90s for most of the north bay sunday and monday and back down to near or slightly below average temperatures the rest of next week. The hottest spots in the trivalley and delta near or above 100 degrees, so a lot of folks going from here to here to enjoy temperatures in the 60s, free air conditioning still for the coast. Is that 40degree spread is always amazing. It never gets old. Its so strange. Its fun. It is for you. Thanks.
