But Credit Rating agency fitch is worried the nations Political Climate could make it a riskier bet, subsequently downgrading the u. S. Debt rating on tuesday. The u. S. Has only endured a downgrade once before, back in 2011. A debt ceiling standoff similar to the one from earlier this summer brought the country to the brink of default, but fitch believes Political Polarization and uncertainty is on the rise and be eroding confidence. Whats going to happen with Social Security . Whatss going to happen with memedicare . What going to happen with the National Debt . There are also some purely economic angles like the recession that everybodys been talking about for a couple years that hasnt arrived yet. But that recession may never come. Bank of america abandoning its recession forecast as attitudes are brightening amid a strong jobs market and cooling inflation. All of a sudden a lot of people are saying maybe the fed can pull this off and bring inflation down without causing a recession. While the move by fitch could lead to a tightening of credit, experts say its unlikely consumers will feel too much of an impact. There are some things people are worried about, but i dont think this downgrade at least in the near term affects everyday people in a significant way. Treasury secretary janet yellen said that the decision was puzzling and entirely unwarranted. Starting today, the sale of most incandescent light bulbs is officially banned in the u. S. Pg e now cutting back on its tree trimming efforts across northern california. The utility said it wont increase the risk of wildfires, but some residents are not convinced. Reporter everything you see here in santa rosa is new. This is one of the neighborhoods affected by wildfires in 2017, so theres growing concern over the fact pg e plans to cut the Tree Trimming Program. Its a nightmare shared by many residents in wine country like richard lane. You could look in that direction and see the freeway. There was nothing and the first time you drove through the neighborhood after the fire you had none of your familiar landmarks. You couldnt find your lot because the streets were all gone. The trees were all gone. It was flat and nothing. It was very disorienting. Reporter hes one of many victims of a wildfire that destroyed his community, coffey park, in san jose in 2017, two years after he bought this house. So the idea pg e is planning to scale back plans to its Tree Trimming Program is concerning. Pg e will always do what pg e does and its all about the bottom line for them. Its all about keeping their shareholders happy, keeping the hedge funds happy and not about and its never been about the fire victims. Reporter the danger comes as trees made contact with live power lines and sparked wildfires like the 2018 campfire that raged through butt county killing 84 people. After that fire pg e created an enhances Vegetation Management program in addition to its regular tree trimming work. Its that program thats being reduced. Mark toney, executive director of turn, the utility networks, says scaling back on tree trimming is not the right way to go. Today pg e announced that they are going to stop their Tree Trimming Program because they want to replace it with their plan to bury 10,000 miles of power lines underground. The problem with that is that it is the slowest and most expensive way to prevent wildfires. Reporter pg e says it is more Cost Effective to use new technology that automatically shuts off power to lines that come in contact with vegetation. The utility points to a 68 reduction in ignitions in such speciallyequipped circuits, but marks suggestion is the faster, safer, and cheaper way to prevent wildfires is to insulate the overhead power lines. That can be done in a quarter of the time at a quarter of the cost. Reporter meanwhile richards says he will continue working in his garden as a way of celebrating life in a place he will always call home. But am i worried about other wildfires taking out the rest of the state because we are the breadbasket of the united states, we grow more food here than any other place in the nation . Yes. Thats a real concern. Reporter richard tells me hell continue this battle with other neighbors to keep this area safe. It was just 4 1 2 years ago that pg e filed for bankruptcy. The company had racked up tens of billions of dollars in debt and liability stemming from major wildfires. Then in 2020 it put 5. 4 billion and more than 22 of its stock into a trust for the victims of wildfires. The most notable of those fires was the 2018 camp fire which virtually destroyed the town of paradise in butte county. Pg e pled guilty to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for every person who died in that fire. The next year a memorial went up that listed the names of the 84 people lost in the camp fire, the deadliest wildfire in california history. The Second Annual trans gender History Month is underway in San Francisco. As mayor london breed got things going with a flag raising ceremony at city hall, she was joined by other city lawmakers and Community Leaders recognizing 57 years since the comptons cafeteria riots in august of 1966 in the tenderloin. How do you like your benets . And Deion Sanders is 2nd day of august, cooler than average temperatures across the bay area. Today weve got one more day in this weather pattern. Enjoy it while it lasts because the big h in the corner of the map, thats the heat dome that will be expanding, not directly over the bay area, but close enough to really boost those inland temperatures as we finish the weekend. Look at the heat risk for friday which isnt anything to be too concerned about, mostly in the low category, a few patches in the moderate category especially into the delta, same thing for the north bay mountains. We always heat up more efficiently. Then the original expands, moderate heat risk on a more widespread basis and it expands even further sunday. Most inland parts of the bay area will be in the moderate heat risk, but no widespread high heat risk values and this is the hottest day well see, temperatures starting to back down monday. We dont have any heat advisories or excessive heat watches in effect. It does look like all the heatwaves so far this summer, so it will be very brief and borderline whether or not it will be dangerously hot. In the long range some signals maybe the above average temperature pattern will try to build back in the middle of the month, only a stronger signal in the eight to 14 day outlook to midaugust. Eventually it will likely feel like summertime. Good air quality across the bay area, lots of green dots on the purple air map. Theres going to be one wave of smoke drifting down from the flat fire burning in southwestern oregon. Most of it will be elevated in the atmosphere tomorrow, but enough could drift down towards ground level for moderate air quality readings in the north bay and in the central bay. Everybody else should be in the green again. Looking outside now in san jose, blue skies overhead, temperature only climbing up to 78 degrees. Temperatures on the warm end of the spectrum stayed short of 80 degrees. Temperatures along the coast reached the upper 50s in pacifica and low 60s in San Francisco. The fog and low cloud cover will spread back out tonight. Its going to be widespread to begin thursday. It backs up out of the inland valleys quickly, but along the coast you wont see sunshine breaking through once again on thursday. Likely friday the sun is in short supply as well. Temperatures tonight mid50s for most of us, warming up very slowly tomorrow, especially near the water, only low 60s for highs in San Francisco. Inland temperatures will be about where they were today, maybe low 80s in santa rosa, up to around 80 degrees in concord, almost 10 degrees below normal. San jose is only in the lower 70s by thursday afternoon. Quickly fill in the rest of the map tomorrow, then the sevenday forecast which has updated. We managed to fix things since our last half hours, mostly 60s and 70s, warmest spots 80s thursday. The warmest days will be saturday and sunday. Its a modest warmup around the bay. Sunday in San Francisco low 70s, 80 degrees in oakland, hotter temperatures just above 90 in san jose sunday, into the mid90s in the north bay and above 100 degrees in the trivalley and delta and back to normal temperatures most of next week. As Astrid Martinez shows us, theres a new Clean Energy Source bubbling up to help heat and cool homes. Reporter the next step in eco Friendly Energy could look like this, the long pipes being drilled into the ground helping to heat and cool this home using geothermal energy. The process takes advantage of temperatures underground which tend to stay around 55 degrees yearround. In the winter fluid is sent through the warm ground, then enters a pump that heats it even more and distributes hot air into the house. The goal is to take advantage of the fact that the soil has a lot of heat capacity, a lot of availability of heat. Reporter in the summer the system is reversed. Hot air is pulled out of the home and sent through the ground to cool. Residential geothermal makes up just 1 of the u. S. Heating and cooling market, but now there are new incentives.
