Just moments ago we spoke with california lawmakers as tension is shifting from the state and now the focus is on bank of america which distributes most of the money. At last count 105 billion through debit cards we discovered were vulnerable to hacks. Kenny choi has been following the story and joins us with the very latest. Reporter bank of america has finally responded to a letter that was sent by lawmakers a couple of weeks ago and confirmed that approximately 200 million were stolen so far. Many questions we have asked are still unanswered. This is a very sad situation, we are talking about innocent people seeing their accounts frozen and they cant access their funds. And as weve been reported on, victims that have had everything taken from their accounts by fraudsters. It is just absolutely unacceptable that we have a bank that is not responding. Not responding to you, to me or to the people they serve. That was the Assembly Members first reaction after watching our reports about rampant hack attacks on debit cards issued by bank of america. My mother actually lost 4806. We heard from dozens of desperate californians that lost thousands of dollars, mostly stolen in cash from atms thousands of miles away from where they live. The debit cards do not have chips which makes her more vulnerable to fraud. But despite all the obvious red flags. How do they make two transactions in san diego and arizona within minutes of each other. Victims tell us that bank of america routinely denies their claims. I was really mad, how can you tell me im not going to get my money back. The money i earned that is rightfully mine. The single mom found out her card was hacked while on a road trip with her kids. Two suspicious withdrawals, two for 200 and another for 800 made that very morning in the bay area. I was thinking, im not in milpitas, more the way down south, how does that happen. Of course i panicked because ive never had anything happen like this to me before. She spent days trying to get through bank of americas fraud department. As soon as you tell them its a fraud claim and you give them your claim number they hang up on you. She is still out 1000, money she desperately needs. I need to feed my kids, that is the most important thing. I need to be able to provide some kind of assurance to my kids that hey, you know, ive got you guys. Things will be okay. We really need to know, what is the problem and how do we solve it. We are going into the Holiday Season. This is where people need money to maybe buy a few gifts for their kids, make sure they have a nice Holiday Season with food. So if they can get access to money i dont how they will do that. There is a bipartisan effort demanding answers and lawmakers are calling on b of a to explain that freezing of the several accounts. We have so many people who dont know why they cant access their add funds. He also wants answers about the hacks on active accounts we have exposed. What is the next step to help the victims . Its already been several months and it really looks like there is no solution right now. I think for all of us we can continue to pressure edd to push their vendor to do what their job is. I think that is what we will continue to do that we can also make sure at the next hearing bank of america shows up. They need to respond. They are in a contract to service these individuals, and if they can perform they should just give it up. Either give us the answers or give it up and we will find somebody else to do this job. I just spoke to the Assembly Member a short time before this broadcast and i interviewed him again in which i asked him about inc. Of americas response. Here is what he had to say. Our letter asked what their methodology was, why are they tripping up so many thousands of individuals and they never answered the question. They didnt tell us any methodology or understanding. They discussed potential fraud but did not provide any evidence or data about potential fraud. It is just outrageous what happened. So specifically, b of a, what is it that they are not answering or are still trying to piece together . They are not answering certain questions, one of the most important that is vital to understanding this entire thing, this big picture, i ask them multiple times, since we started reporting on this, i asked the edd and bank of america, how many accounts have since been verified, investigated and funds credited heard we know there are several because many reached out to us asking for help and then responded they did get their accounts credited. But when i asked the bank how many statewide, nationwide, they said they would not disclose that number. That is a problem because i asked him again this morning and why they were not disclose that and they would not respond. It makes you wonder just how big that number really is. Great reporting, thank you so much. And by the way we will post the letter and the response on her website, kpix. Com. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of out of work californians can even get their money issued in the first place. The backlog of unpaid claims at the edd currently stands at just over 725,000. Its the highest the number has been in about a month read roughly half of that backlog is made up of entirely new claims. This Holiday Season many in the bay area are rushing to buy live Christmas Trees and get a little extra Holiday Cheer in their homes. W spotted plenty of people out picking the perfect tree in this Christmas Tree lot in San Francisco today. With the new stayathome order many people are preparing for a much smaller holiday celebration. We normally have a Big Christmas party at our house with about 30 people. We usually get about a seven foot high tree, well thats not going to happen. Its just the two of us. So we are looking for a four foot tree. Or Something Like it. Just to keep the spirit in our place. I know others who have actually gone the opposite direction. I think while smaller celebration, bigger tree. That would be us, also. Yeah, behind me.
