Reporter that is the voice of the Benicia Police officer calling for help moments after striking a man not far from the 870 onramp. 48yearold scott hamers was pronounced dead at the scene. We turn over all the uthe california Highway Patrol and the Solano County district attorneys office. And we are not part of the collision investigation. Reporter the officer was not responding to a call and was immediately removed from the scene. Tonight the Highway Patrol has not commented on the investigation, but the Benicia Police department is extending its condolences to hamers family. I mean, obviously, it is a very tragic event for everyone involved, and you know, our deepest, deepest condolences go to the pedestrians loved ones and friends and family. An air force captain killed in a plane crash in nevada county. That plane went down near grass valley. Reporter Marissa Perlman is at that air field where he learned to fly. The faa says ron reported engine problems before crashing into trees near grass valley. The Sheriffs Office says witnesses saw the plane lose power. Made landfall in nicaragua, honduras, went over cuba, the south coast of florida, made another turn and now its up the west coast of florida. Its crazy. Its been weird in an already weird atlantic hurricane season. This is the recordbreaking 12th named storm to make landfall. It was already that when it made landfall over the weekend, now it makes landfall to the north of tampa. Plenty of rain on the east side of circulation. Flooding rains likely around the tampa and st. Petersburg area. Lets switch to the forecast path and show you where it goes from here. There it is off the coast of tampa. It makes landfall north of tampa and then weaken as it makes its way farther and farther inland. The heavy rain and storm surge are the primary threats. Wind 65 to 70 miles an hour. That wind threat will diminish as it goes farther inland, and then itll reemerge over the atlantic ocean, not forecast at this point to restrengthen once it makes its way over the gulf stream, because the upper level winds arent going to be favorable, but with this storm, never say never. Still a tropical depression by thursday night. Well let you know how it behaves. Fortunately, it doesnt have a direct impact on our weather, which has been okay today. Occasionally sunshine peeking through. Temperatures on the cool side. 53 degrees in livermore. 54 downtown. 58 degrees is the warm location on the east side of the bay in oakland. Temperatures drop back as we head through the rest of tonight. As the skies continually clear out, well lose that blanket of clouds and warmth near ground level today, which wasnt much, its going to escape into space. Most temperatures around the bay in the low to mid40s with 30s farther inlad. Upper 30s for the trivalley and mid30s for the north by a. As we head to tomorrow, temperatures should return to loes to whats normal for this year. Low to mid60s is what we expect this time of year, and thats what most of us get. Mid, even a few upper 60s into the santa clara valley. Up to 67 degrees for morgan hill. Temperatures mostly in the mid60s for the trivalley with slightly warmer conditions east of mt. Diablo. Mostly low 60s around the bay itself. A few spots stuck in the upper 50s. A few degrees below average and farther into the north bay, low to mid60s with temperatures in lake and mendocino counties struggling more. A bit on the cool side for this time of year. Good rain chance on the way by the end of the workweek. Weve bumped it up to a 70 chance of rain by the time friday rolls around. The specific timing is still a bit up in the air. The afternoon and evening hours look to be the wettest timeframe. Well break that down with a look at futurecast at 5 30. Another chance of rain could head our way as early as tuesday. Some of the forecast data holds that off until wednesday or thursday. That first round of rain is likely to bring rain to most of the bay area. Its why its a 70 chance. This isnt going to be enough to cause any problems on those burn scars. No debris flows in the forecast. Some spots in the north bay and the coastal mountains and Santa Cruz Mountains could pick up a little more than a quarter inch of rain friday into friday evening. We dry out for the weekend. All started this morning in San Bernardino when authorities tried to pull over an suv for expired tags, but the driver refused to stop. District officials voted to reopen five schools in january for students who choose to combine inperson and online learning. Only about 30 of students will be allowed inside the classroom. Reporter each year at this time, we pay respects to those who fought for this country, but on mare island, just doing that has been a fight in itself. Todays ceremony marked the rebirth of a place long since left for dead. The Mare Island Naval cemetery is the oldest on the west coast and had fallen into a level of disrepair many considered disgraceful. After the old navy base cousin transferred to the city in 1996, the va refused to take responsibility for the burial grounds. But where it is today is a definite, definite change, and a respectful change. Reporter today the rotted trees and broken branches are gone. The white picket fence rebuilt. The darkened markers, some too weathered to read, have been scrubbed clean. Most of this was accomplished because of the persistence of one man retired colonel nester who considers saving this cemetery to be a matter of honor.
