Since maki was among the oldest of the pack investigators believe that the suspect may have taken advantage of the fact that he moves more slowly. Due to the fact that these are very agile wild animals, that dont get captured easily, its possible that the suspect chased after the animal that was easiest to catch. The habitat is the largest outdoor lemur habitat in north america and features seven species of lemurs. The remaining lemurs are now being temporarily housed in an indoor facility as the investigation continues. Why one san jose family is going bigger than ever this halloween to give one special kid a real treat. A reminder that kpix 5 has a new app and you can find 24 7 access to cbsn bay tonight the longest running bridge strike in San Francisco is finally over. They havent paid rent in six years but now tenants in midtown Park Apartments have won their battle against the city. Susie steimle shows us a property with roots in racism and redevelopment is finally being returned to its original purpose. Reporter at the midtown park apartment i guarantee it every building you will find someone whos been here 35 years or more. Almost every single resident. Are grandpa bring us here. What is considered a legacy tenant, legacy being a polite word for elderly. 65 of the folk that live here, including me, are seniors on fixed incomes. Dont their agent for you, the seniors are still fighting the good fight. We are children of the 60s and will take this to the street. San francisco, its your reputation, right . I called them out, shimon San Francisco. These tenants just won the longest strike in San Francisco, many elderly tenants had their rent increased by 300 in some cases a many refuse to pay. Now the city is saying it may owe money back to any tenant that did adhere to that rent increase. This is a property that shows how things can go badly when you dont listen to the tenants. Supervisor dean preston joined the fight to bring back rent control to me 10 years ago. His legislation just past the board o supervisors unanimously. My hope is that the new chapter for midtown, that the tenants are at the table and charting the future of midtown. The midtown Park Apartments opened in 1968 were offered to tenants who were displaced during redevelopment like pat smith. As redevelopment came through, they tore down 104 square blocks of homes, apartments, businesses. Redevelopment started with the housing act in 1949 signed by president truman. Their purpose was to reinvent areas. Thousands of people were displaced from San Franciscos historically black fillmore district. That boasted performances from jazz icons like millie holiday, John Coltrane and miles davis. Jazz culture has not in the same sense. Midtown offer displaced families a place to live. It is said, it was rent to own, there was a big sign saying see, we are trying to do the right thing for you guys but it never came to fruition. For decades tenants like pat maintained low rent inking the building was rent controlled. In 2014 the city changed the game yet again. Mercy housing took over and reassessed each tenants income. For tenants like jerry, right went up by 500. When i got here my rent was lower, then when mercy came, suddenly it went up, way up. Many tenants have been on strike ever since. Until supervisor preston handed them a longawaited wind. Usually the city makes plans and enforces them on residents, and we lift that script for longterm stability. Ive enjoyed the fight because its shown the younger people it can be done. It is showing the older people that they dont have to sit down and just give up. These tenants now have a choice to pay 30 of their income towards rent or go back to the pre2014 levels. The fight does not stop there. Next they are working toward ownership, something that was promised to many tenants here decades ago. Keep sending you stories and ideas to project home cvs. Com and see all of susies reporting on our website. This afternoon and China Airlines crew reported someone that appeared to be someone in a jed pack above the ground by six as a fee. The incident had no impact on operations at the airport. A similar sighting of a person like you just pack was reported back in august. The fbi and faa are investigating both instances. Weve got people without power tonight, and a lot of it is due to the weather. Right because of the fire danger that is ramping up the combination of dry conditions and windy conditions and hot weather has resulted in that red flag warning area lets talk about the big picture perspective. We talk about the heat dome all week and how our temperatures have been going up and up. The position of that heat dome is not unusual for this time of the year. We often see these instances of offshore winds, but the strength of this area of High Pressure is unusual because theres a storm system way out in the Central Pacific that has been digging in and that has attempted our area of High Pressure to get amplified, to grow and grow. And that will be with us through the end of the work week and into the first half of the weekend. So the whole upper flow in the atmosphere will flatten out, the heat dome retreats to the west and we see onshore winds returning for the second half of the weekend and early next week. So we just have to get through the next few days, it will be a busy few days because of the high fire danger because of the hot, dry and dusty conditions. And temperatures are very warm still, 11 00 in the evening with a lot of 70s on the map, even downtown its barely below 70 and still 81 in livermore. We will only drop down into the 60s, these temperatures are a dozen degrees above average for midoctober and we will be 20 degrees above average for thursday. Around 80 degrees, even along the coast. Low 90s along the south end of the bay, 95 in san jose with mid90s common in the tri valley and even triple digit temperatures for the middle of october east of the diablo range , 102 in fairfield, upper 80s in San Francisco, 90 for the east bay in mid to upper 90s for the north bay as well. Close to record territory tomorrow, a little short in the city but tying a record high in oakland, san jose i clee to break a record, close in santa rosa, and another day of this is on the way for friday, which is why we have the heat advisory that kicks in at 11 00 tomorrow morning and continues through friday evening. Take it easy and stay hydrated. It is the fire danger that has us concerned late tonight into early tomorrow morning and again tomorrow night into early friday morning. Back to closer to normal temperatures for the beginning of next week. We will keep you updated starting tomorrow at 4 30. We are talking playoff baseball, are the tampa rays world series band .
