The category 3 storm is packing 120mileperhour winds, also threatening deadly storm surge. Some areas could get 15 inches of rain. Delta is expected to hit later on today and it is intensifying as it bears down on the gulf coast. Courtney zabowski is in lafayette, louisiana. This storm is expected to hit that area pretty hard. It is still reeling from hurricane laura six weeks ago. How are people preparing, what is going on . Reporter what were hearing from people is not again. Right now it is a category 3 and it could weaken, but at this point, forecasters predicted it would strengthen overnight it did and now it is headed straight for the louisiana coast. Residents along louisianas gulf coast are packing up, and heading north again. It is getting tiresome. It is part of being here. I mean, the good times far outweigh the bad. Reporter vic and bebe are under a mandatory evacuation as hurricane delta approaches. It is the third time this year they have had to leave home. Theyre forecasting the water may be as high as 7 feet. We dont take a chance. Reporter just six weeks ago, hurricane laura slammed lake charles as a category 4 storm. Today, debris is still scattered around the city. And blue tarps cover many houses. If we got a lot of rain, and all of this debris just starts floating around, that gets dangerous. Reporter this is the fifth time louisiana has been under a state of emergency this hurricane season. Officials are warning of a life threatening storm surge of up to 11 feet in some areas. Southwest louisiana is going to get more of a punch from this than we would like to see for sure. Reporter in neighboring texas, residents are following the forecast closely. Yeah, i mean, youre nervous, youre watching, your eyes are glued to the path of the storm. Reporter Jimmy Blackburn is ready to board up if delta moves west. We have the house stocked with canned goods, groceries, water. Were going to stay here and see how it goes and keep an eye on it in case it turns our way. Reporter the National Hurricane center expects delta to make landfall this evening. So, yes, hurricane 3 right now, could weaken but, annemarie that gives little comfort to the people still recovering from hurricane laura. Yeah, im sure of that. Courtney zubowski, thank you so much. So authorities have arrested 13 men accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. State and federal Officials Say that the suspects are part of local militias, and now face charges of conspiracy and terrorism. Michael george has the details. Reporter Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer spoke out for the first time after officials revealed 13 men had spent months planning to kidnap her. I knew this job would be hard. But ill be honest, i never could have imagined anything like this. Reporter six of the men are facing federal charges for their plot to snatch the democratic governor from her vacation home. According to the criminal complaint, they even discussed assassinating her, writing in a message, quote, have one person go to her house, knock on the door, and when she answers it, just cap her. Members of this conspiracy on two occasions conducted coordinated surveillance on the governors vacation home, according to the complaint, discussed detonating explosive devices to divert police from the area of the home. Reporter in a separate plot, Seven Members of a Militia Group called the wolverine watchmen face state charges for planning to attack the State Capitol and kidnap Law Enforcement and government officials, including governor whitmer. The group also discussed using molotov cocktails to destroy Police Vehicles in the hopes of instigating a civil war. All of us in michigan can disagree about politics. But those disagreements should never, ever amount to violence. Reporter whitmer accused President Trump of purposefully inspiring hate groups, most recently during last weeks president ial debate. Proud boys, stand back and stand by. Hate groups heard the president s words not as a rebuke, but as a rallying kri. Reporter one of the men accused whitmer of having too much power. Shes been criticized for imposing restrictive measures in response to the cocoronanavirus. Whwhitmer defendeded her sta home orb home orders which have since been lifted. He said she did a terrible job for locking her state down, and rather than saying thank you, he alleged that she called him a white supremacist. President trumps doctor says mr. Trump can make a safe return to the public as early as tomorrow. The doctor says the president completed his course of therapy since being diagnosed with the coronavirus. In an interview with fox news last night, mr. Trump said he wants to get back on the campaign trail. I think im going to try doing a rally on saturday night if we can if we have enough time to put it together. We want to do a rally probably in florida on saturday night, might come back and do one in pennsylvania the following night and it is incredible what is going on. I feel so good. During the interview, he sounded hoarse and had to stop twice to clear his throat. He said hes taking another test for covid today, but insisted he and the first lady feel good. It appears the president and joe biden may not face off for their second debate next thursday. The move comes after the commission on president ial debates announced the event would be virtual after mr. Trump tested positive for the coronavirus. Well, the president said that he would not participate in the debate. Bidens campaign called for a postponement. Biden has since scheduled a town hall for thursday. They could still square off for the third scheduled debate on the 22nd, but it is unclear in what format. New cases of the coronavirus are now rising in 31 states. Wisconsin is one of the nations largest hot spots. People are waiting in long lines to get tested. Hospitals are scrambling to make sure that there are enough beds for sick people. The Healthcare System in northeast wisconsin says that it has seen about a 500 increase in hospitalizations. Consumer reports Rachel Rapkin peachman analyzed the governments database and found 28 deaths associated with Nursing Pillows. She is calling on manufacturers for better product messaging. They should be clearly labeled in every instance so that parents have a very Firm Understanding that these products are not to be used for infant sleep. Reporter the government says nearly 1,000 infants suffocate in their sleep each year, raising concerns about cribs, inclined sleepers and related Consumer Products. Officials issued the pillow warning even before their investigation was over. The cpsc did not name specific brands, but says it is looking into the entire class of products.
