This debate is expected to be one that people will watch closely. With the president contracting covid and both president ial candidates being older, voters are think being a vp candidate having to step into the top spot. After last weeks contentious president ial debate will you shut up, man . Theres nothing smart about you, joe. Reporter mike pence and Kamala Harris are expected to set a different tone at tonights Vice President ial debate in utah. These two candidates are just so completely different than the people the top of the ticket. Reporter jason perry, the director of the Hinckley Institute of politics at the university of utah, says this debate takes on extra significance after President Trumps covid diagnosis. Any time you see Something Like this get to the highest levels of the white house, it becomes something that everyone in the country just wants an answer to. Reporter as a precaution, the candidates and moderator will sit 12 feet apart with pexiglass dividers between them. Everyone inside the debate hall will be subjected to a variety of health and safety protocols including covid testing and mask wearing. If anyone does not wear a mask, Officials Say they will be escorted out. Everyone is taking it very seriously. Reporter in addition to the white house covid outbreak, theres a battle over filling the Supreme Court seat. Nationwide racial unrest on top of that we never had president ial candidates of this age. And now we have two very senior people running for president and i think theres a real focus on the Vice President in a way that weve never seen before. Breaking overnight, just hours after calling off talks for covid relief aid, President Trump now wants to approve relief funds. Last night he fired off a series of tweets saying if Congress Sends him a standalone bill for 1,200 stimulus checks, they will go out immediately. He also called on the house and the senate to approve 25 billion for airlines and 135 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses. All of this comes as he continues to recover from the coronavirus himself at the white house. Doctors say the president s vital signs are stable and hes reporting no symptoms. A white house spokesperson echoed the same message, but with some caution. The president s improving dramatically and quickly, but listen, we understand hes not out of the woods. Hes continuing to be monitored by his doctor and medical team here. Meantime, the covid19 outbreak connected to the white house continues to grow. Adviser Stephen Miller became the latest Administration Official to test positive. He said hes been working remotely and will quarantine. Joe biden says hes looking forward to debating the president next thursday in miami, but said if mr. Trump still has the virus, the event should be called off. Earlier in the day, biden hit the campaign trail in gettysburg, pennsylvania. With four weeks until election day, more than 4 Million People have already voted. Thats according to the United States elections project, which gathers early voting data. Back in 2016 only 75,000 people cast an early ballot at this time. Researchers say the shift is driven by the expansion of early and mailin voting. Theyre predicting a record turnout this year of 150 million votes. The handling of the coronavirus may influence how some people vote.
