And also lower relative humidity values. So a big concern as we head into tomorrow. In the meantime, looking at air quality, good to moderate this morning. Although closer to the glass fire, calistoga, st. Helena, looking at unhealthy air quality this morning. So a spare the air alert that remains in effect for today with those hazy skies. Temperatures mid 70s this afternoon in San Francisco and mid 80s in oakland and upper 80s for san jose and upper 90s for concord. Well talk about the heat advisory and fire weather watch for tomorrow coming up in just a few minutes but now lets check in with gianna for a look at traffic for the latest on the road closures due to the glass fire. Closures continue there as well at dare park. At lake county line all the way to tubbs lane. So closures in effect there. Highway 12 you can see on the maps there. A large stretch closed and again this includes surface streets in and around the areas. Were already starting to see brake lights through the Altamont Pass and thats in the next report. Im anne makovec at the live news desk. And we just have this new video in from the firefighters who have been working the front lines of the glass fire in santa rosa, a very close call as a chimney falls. This is a strike team from San Mateo County and they were facing basically a six mile fire front monday morning. This is on Mountain Hawk drive in santa rosa. And they ended up saving dozens of homes here but just look at the conditions. This is what theyre dealing with. You can see the wind and how its just raging and moving the smoke around. And just a terrifying way, frankly. That fire of course continues to burn today. Lets take the latest look at the evacuations right now. The Napa County Community of angwin under a mandatory order along the city of calistoga and the hills to the west between Petrified Forest road and Diamond Mountain road. In Sonoma County. Downgraded to warnings in Santa Rosa West of calistoga road. It has burned more than actually its burned over 46,000 acres and more than 22,000 homes are still threatened this morning. And at least 115 structures have been destroyed. And at this point, it is 2 contained. So at least we moved up from 0 after several days and such a challenging fire fight over there. Were going to continue to cover it for you and emily turner is on her way to the scene in napa county to give us well be following that for you. Michelle. Of asfire where you can see flames coming through calistoga creeping up on highway 29 overnight but the fire is burning north and east. Somewhat away from populated areas. Fire crews are working hard just north of calistoga trying to keep the flames from jumping the highway. Calistoga remains a ghost town for now. Monday night, the fire was slowly approaching town but now the fire has moved up and the orange glow can be seen on the northeast side of highway 29. Cal fire says it has more than 2,000 firefighters working to knock down the glass fire. But they are spread throughout napa and sonoma counties. Calistoga residents are glad the fire hasnt entered city limits but they are still nervous. This is not good you know . P careful. Couple of times every summer. I guess thats now the price to pay for living here. Its a great place to live, but it feels like a bit of a beat down. Cal fire crews are providing structure protection but are letting some of the flames burn. The fire fatigue is overwhelming as evacuating year after year takes a huge toll. The endless months of watching for smoke and fire in the hills are worrying on the people who call the north bay home. 1400 square miles have burned in Sonoma County since 2017. Every wine country resident has their own fire story. Some go into autopilot whenever theres a red flag warning. The tubs fire was just a few blocks from our house. The first time. And then evacuated for kincaid. I mean, were all okay. Were resilient. Were full of love and blessed with so much. But it just keeps hitting us, you know . Its like come on. All right already. For all the talk of sonoma strong, wine country strong, the fatigue is real. The fires have brought much of northern napa county to a standstill. And not just in evacuated places. Power is actually out along much of the highway 128 corridor. So st. Helena is also largely deserted with just about every Downtown Business closed yesterday. En phone lines are also down in many areas and Cell Phone Service is limited. More than 27,000 customers in El Dorado County were impacted by pg es latest Public Safety power shutoffs. Lets hit the roadways if you are headed to the Altamont Pass, supercommuters are already starting the see the brake lights. But its typical. No accidents or incidents to slow you down. So you basically know what to expect westbound 580. Slow and go as you connect off of 205 and extends to just about north flynn. I am seeing a few slow and go conditions through the Livermore Valley as well. Westbound side headed into the Altamont Pass. The dublin interchange, just a steady flow of traffic but no brake lights getting on to 680. 36 minute drive time, 205 over to 680. I just checked in with chp, no major accidents or incidents for the eastshore freeway and for highway 4 or for 101 out of the south bay. So that san jose commute off to a very good start this morning. The Golden Gate Bridge, a little foggy this morning. So they did issue a fog advisory. Limited visibility might be an issue as you work your way across the span and you can see that in the live shot. Right now the drive time southbound 101 as you head from the richmondsan rafael bridge down into the city is just about 15 minutes. So pretty much typical conditions as you head through there. No delays, no metering lights at the bay bridge toll plaza. Thats good news. Traffic off to a great start commuting out of the east bay working your way into San Francisco. And the san mateo bridge, pretty lightly traveled right now. No brake lights or troubles yet. 13 minutes to go between 880 over to 101. Headed to the peninsula out of the east bay, you are smooth sailing the whole stretch of the way across the span. Thats a look at your morning drive. And for more on those foggy spots, heres mary. And gianna, im watching the fog roll in along the coast and right around the bay. With that onshore flow that ocean breeze kicking in for us. Our temperatures this morning are in the 50s and in the 60s. As we start out of the day. 60 for concord and oakland and 61 for livermore and San Francisco at 57. 63 right now in san jose and santa rosa coming in at 54. Lets talk about our air quality. So looking good to moderate across the region. With that onshore flow. Looking at good air quality for san frcidwood city and san leandro and oakland. Moderate air quality this morning for san jose and livermore as well as for concord and vacaville. Otherwise good air quality for santa rosa and berkeley and as well as for vallejo. But closer to the glass fire, in the north bay, for calistoga in strew. Unhealthy aqumoing. A this hot deem still parked overhead. And as we look to tomorrow, that ridge of High Pressure is only going to expand. So hot through the end of the week and we are looking at those temperatures for tomorrow even hotter. About 15 to 25 degrees above average. And that is the reason why a heat advisory will be in effect for tomorrow from 11 00 a. M. Until 8 00 p. M. Due to the dangerous heat. Temperatures will be back up to the mid 90s to triple digits inland and around the bay, mid 80s to low 90s tomorrow and even along the coast, mid to upper 70s. Also dealing with the high file danger for tomorrow. With a fire weather watch for the north bay mountains and above 1,000 feet and thats from tomorrow afternoon until friday evening. That does include the glass fire. So a big concern for us as we are going to see the winds pick up tomorrow. And lower relative humidity values critical fire weather conditions. Now futurecast, smoke concentration as we head through the day, well see those hazy skies and i think the smokiest conditions of course will be in the north bay closer to the glass fire. And even some of that smoke drifting into the east bay for today. As we look to tomorrow, though, we are looking at that smoke in our atmosphere getting even worse with poor air quality as we look to thursday with those smoky skies. And in the meantime, for today, looking at upper 80s for san jose. For the south bay, as we look to the east bay, upper 90s, 99 for concord and pleasant hill. Upper 90s to triple digit heat for the trivalley. Around the bay, looking at mid 70s in San Francisco and mid 80s in oakland and for the north bay, mid 80s to mid 90s later on this afternoon. Heres that extended forecast and what you can expect. There we go with that heat and more of that smoke as we look to thursday. Still warm to hot for friday. But then we begin to cool it down for the weekend. And into early next week. Back to you. All right, mary, thank you. The 49ers are tackling the election in a new way. Good morning everyone, its wednesday, september 30th. Im Michelle Griego. And im len kiese. Good morning. But first we want to start with anne makovec covering the president ial debate. The big talker this morning. Anne . Reporter it was something. And social media still blowing up about it. Were monitoring that and talking a live look at cleveland this morning. Interruptions and name calling and insults. It was pretty ugly and cbs news Laura Podesta joins us live now from cleveland with more on the high or pretty much the low lights i think were talking about this morning. Laura . Reporter thats right. Good morning anne. President trump and the former Vice President really wasted no time trying to score points during this first president ial debate. They were each asked about six different topics. The first was the open supreme coPresident Trumps nominee will vote to dismantle the Affordable Care act. The two then clashed over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic. And late in the debate. President trump was asked to disavow White Supremacy leading to perhaps the most controversial and buzzed about response of the evening. Proud boys stand back and stand by. This is a president who has used everything as a dog whistle to try to generate racist hatred. Racist division. Reporter they also sparred over taxes with biden releasing his 2019 tax return just hours before the debate. And calling on President Trump to do the same. You willremember a New York Times report that was released on sunday said that President Trump paid just 750 in federal income tax in both 2016 and 2017. A report that President Trump has called fake news. The next time the two candidates will meet is on october 15th. For another debate in miami. Anne . All right, i know Fact Checking is very important. So many times when one candidate would make a statement and the other one would just call him a liar and you have no idea where we are at this point. Go to social media for answers and of course its an echo chamber. What a rtsaying this morning about ybe re , fo 41 believed that President Trump won. 48 believed that president that former Vice President biden won the debate. 10 believe that the two tied. But whats really interesting anne, is that we also polled to find out how people felt watching the debate and you mentioned people felt that it was messy and that it was a stressful experience. Eight in ten said that they felt the debates tone was negative and they felt annoyed watching it. All right. Well, we will see what the future two debates hold in store. Laura podesta live for us in cleveland and you guys watched last night. Any thoughts . There was a lot of back and forth between the candidates. And it was kind of hard to watch at some points. Yeah. It was. And you and i were texting actually. Throughout the entire debate. So lots of people talking about it and our pofor some tho it. President seemed agitated and argumentative and at one point arguing with the moderator. You know, joe biden wasnt without his faults. He got into it with the president. There was some name calling. But i did notice that every once in a while biden would look at the camera and address viewer. Part of his strategy was clearly to not really totally focus on the president. And i think part of the prosecutes strategy was to really demand that focus. And were going to have more on the debate throughout morning. Plus at 6 30, the results from voter polls after that debate. All right, so switching gears now to our local weather. Lets check in with meteorologist mary lee. And of course were tracking the heat and the fire conditions as well. Thats right. Michelle and len. So im tracking the heat that extreme heat for tomorrow. That high fire danger. So a lot to get to. Today though an shore flow. So enjoy it and thats at least bringing temperatures cooler at the coast and right around the bay. But still heating up inland. And we are looking at at this point, this morning, good to moderate air quality although unhealthy air right now for places like calistoga and closer to the glass fire. Going through the day for the coast were looking at mid 60s. Breezy and cool. For the bay, hazy skies and mild in the mid 70s to mid 80s. And inland, in the upper 80s to upper 90s. Some of our hottest spots inland will hit 100 degrees this afternoon. With those hazy and smoky skies. So a spare the air alert that remains in effect for today. But changes for tomorrow as we are going to see temperatures skyrocketing with the heat advisory that will be effect for tomorrow from 11 00 a. M. To 8 00 p. M. For most of the bay area. And looking at a fire weather watch for the north bay mountains tomorrow afternoon until friday evening. For the north bay mountains above 1,000 feet and then it does include the glass fire. Well talk all about this coming up in just a few minutes. But now lets check in with gianna for a look at traffic and the latest on road closures due to the glass fire. Thanks mary. Overview map here just to kind of give you the idea of basically the parameters and you know, how large the area is d someing thatschanged since it shifted just a bit. More now on 128. That parameter is now 128 Petrified Forest road to the Sonoma County line. 29 at lake county line over to tubbs lane. That closure is there and theres a closure at 29 at deer park as well. So headsup there. Also highway 12 closures continue there also between mission boulevard to arnold and calistoga road. Adobe canyon. The largest areas that are closed. So also surface streets in and around there as well. And im emily turner here on the napa valley floor where the glass fire is now 46,000 acres. And has grown overnight. Its just 2 contained and you can see behind me some spots where its still burning. A glow there on the hillside. The calistoga area remains a ghost town for now. And its just a waiting game for residents with changing winds expected in the area as mary was talking about. Looking to see which way the flames are going to move next. Now monday night the blaze was slowly approaching calistoga town but now the fire has moved you were and its glow can be seen on the northeast side of highway 29. Fire crews are now working to keep those flames from jumping the highway. Cal fire says more than 2,000 firefighters are fighting the blaze in sonoma and napa counties. Calistoga residents say theyre glad the fire hasnt entered the city limits thankfully, but theyre still nervous about it. You know, couple of times every summer, i guess thats now the price to pay for living here. Its a great place to live. But its it feels like a bit of a beat down. Reporter on defending structures in sonoma and napa counties because that of course is the biggest problem. Now while also building and reinforcing containment lines thats what theyre going to be doing in addition to that holt delay weather is antist paided over the next several days as mary talked ant. Thats going to be the big concern moving forward. Reporting live in napa county, emily turner, kpix 5.
