Filling their buckets and making their way back into the rough terrain. It is tough there, we are trying to establish control lines. We have had to take a step back and set up new line spear folks were told to get out, leave town at once, many neighborhoods look like ghost towns. Many mailboxes are tagged, to let First Responders know that the house is empty, not everyone left. If i see flames, i am out of here. Until then, we will probably hang out. This man says there are about 50 people here still. He and his friend dave are making the rounds to check on thosewho are choosing to stay. To be ready is the biggest thing here the sheriffs are patrolling the streets. As we mentioned, evacuations on the west end of this fire have lifted or downgraded at this hour. Eastern santa rosa is no longer under a warning. It affects the springlake areas, the middle ring con and skylake areas. For many, it is too late. This video was shot in the skyhawk neighborhood, where several homes were destroyed. Hazy skies over the south bay today, because of those fires. This is a view from chopper five beer this is a time lapse from bay bridge. Welcome news for firefighters is the break from the wind. The wind is consistent, but still much calmer than it was. And you can see the wind, you can see the ghostly lines going from the golden gate into the santa clara valley. The north bay has some of the lightest wind on the map. Current wind speeds are pen up to 12 miles per hour. The other good news, relative humidity levels are quite a bit higher than they were over the weekend. Lower Little Levels as you go to the north of napa and into the east of santa rosa. This is in the immediate vicinity of the class complex. Not as bad as it was, but still not as high as we would like to see. Air quality is getting worse with smoke going into the tri valley and portions of the east bay with reduced air quality compared to other parts of the bay area. Smoke is a concern for the next several days. The spare the air alert continues for the next several days with more record heat headed our way. The blaze is having a huge impact on local attractions. Even right wineries that were spared by the fire are taking a big hit. Some of the wineries suffered only minor losses. Like these solar panels bordering the burned hillside. The sonoma state winery has been devaed the feention e bottlioom alunr th sa rf, and the wine in these barrels is a total loss. The fire also had its way with the hourglass winery, 160year old residence that served as a Welcome Center for guests has been leveled. And also melted the plastic roof, destroying the 2020 vintage. But last years wine was protected in an underground cave, so the business will still have some revenue this year. Winemaking is not for the faint of heart these days. I dont think it has ever been for the faint of heart, you know. Road closures, Power Outages and bad air have killed the tourist trade, hurting wine sales and every other hospitality business. Brett brown was purchasing gas at for his generator and has been without power for 36 hours. We are losing customers left and right, to covid and the fires. These are tough times. You stack a few these on top of each other and it starts to have a psychological effect. But we are a resilient community. Eventually the air will clear. Tourists willreturn. Those who stayed to rebuild will be rewarded for not being faint of heart. In napa valley, john ramose, kpl kpix five. Weve got more on the grass fire and we expect to hear from cal fire officials soon. Lets hear from them now. The priorities for the day were a significant portion of the line to be cut between the pine trail, old mountain and the sugarloaf park. If that line does not hold, we have to fall back to the napa county side and the Sonoma County side. We dont want to give up so much land and structures between the control lines. That is the priority for the day. This is followed closely by calistoga road, on the other side of the fire, to make sure that we dont lose the line that we have to help keep the fire out of lincoln valley, and santa rosa valley. We did get the National Guard helicopters into the area. They were able to sortie on the east side of the fire, the Evacuation Order was extended to include the entire community. That is where we had the most active fire behavior today. For more on the update on the firefight, we have tony joining us. Thank you, chief. Good afternoon and thank you for having me. Just a followup, on the santa rosa area, ive spent a lot of time in Oakmont Oakmont and lower calistoga road today. All of these areas are looking good. We have many tactical patrols in and out of the area and lots of room for Fire Equipment in the area. The main job for them is to put out any hotspots and check around structures and make sure that we dont have secondary issues moving forward. Annandale is looking good. It is burning there, but they are using containment lines through the area. I will say that im being told, hopefully it will change. But im being told that we will have a red flag warning this week. Wednesday, thursday, 100degree wind 100degree days with wind and low humidity. It is important for all of us to pick up these hotspots and clean everything as much as we can until we see more heat and wind. Thats going to hit the fire area with a lot of fire on the ground still. There is a lot that can still burn. We are preparing for that and acknowledge the tough circumstances that we have. One of the other things that we did do today was release Evacuation Orders for mostly calistoga road and to the west. Most folks have been able to go home under a warning. There are some properties that still do not have power. Pg e is working on that as we speak. There was a lot of damage to infrastructure. Power poles, utility lines, theres a lot to be done before we can even start thinking about letting anybody get into the more remote areas. We have fire crews up there, working as we speak to take down the trees and replace the telephone poles and the wires. Below calistoga road, there are hotspots all over. The smoke lifts a little bit, and you get a little bit of wind. We start to see these hotspots up in mulch, landscaping, oak trees that were on fire at one point. There is a lot of work in and around here. Really this is around the entire fire, wherever there is equipment, where they are not trying to actively control fire, they are still working to create containment and put down hotspots. Thank you, chief. A long road to go, thank you for the update. For more on the situation on the front lines, lets turn to the Santa Rosa Police chief. Thank you, paul. In coordination with cal fire and the santa rosa fire department, as the chief has stated, we have lifted certain areas of the warnings. Weve downgraded some of the warnings and also lifted some of the Evacuation Orders. If you live within the city limits and you are not sure where those are, or what zone that you live in, you can look it up. Continue to monitor our website, you can also go to srcity. Org glassfire. The lifted areas include the Evacuation Orders for east one and east two, as well as east three. All of those orders have been lifted. The Evacuation Orders that have been lifted include somerville and spring lake. All of northeast section two and three, middle rincon valley, portions of calistoga south, these have been lifted. Be very careful. Follow the information that is on our website. We still have Evacuation Orders in place for portions of calistoga south of skyhawk. Including everything east of san ramon and mount hawk drive. We have portions closed in melita and east of calistoga road. And north of melita between queen anne and montgomery. And all areas south of montgomery drive. It sounds very confusing. We are trying to get as many people as we can into the safe areas. The other zones that remain under mandatory evacuation include calistoga north, stonebridge, pythian, oakmont south, you can still cannot go back to these particular areas. We continue to watch over those areas and maintain safety and we are very mindful of the traffic going in and out. It is against the law to be in the evacuated areas. So please do not go in there, we want to make sure that it is safe for the community and for public safety. We ask the community again to follow us on social media. Be mindful of everything that is going on, even though things are opening up, it is still dangerous. Be patient and flexible. Make sure that you are up to date on the changing conditions. One more thing. We have had reports of missing persons. We have located them so far. 42,000 acres, still no containment. We invite you to stay with us for the latest on the Northern California fires. We have a list of Evacuation Orders and maps on our website. Still ahead and streaming on cbsn bay area, ready to take your immune support to the next level . Natures bounty is here for you. The flames, the ash, it was terrifying. Thousands of family homes are destroyed in wildfires. Families are forced to move and higher property taxes are a huge problem. Prop 19 limits taxes on wildfire victims so families can move without a tax penalty. Nineteen will help rebuild lives. Vote yes on 19. On the campaign 2020, this campaign is set in cleveland. In less than an hour, President Trump and former Vice President joe biden will faceoff in their first debate. President trump touchdown just ahead of president biden, he will be preparing for the 90 minute showdown. Alyssa joins us now. We have two very different man with very different sound styles here. Joe biden is leading in the National Polls so far, he has the reputation he needs to to avoid any big gaffes. He loses his train of thought, and sometimes will make statements that are very far from the truth, that could potentially hurt him, and he needs to keep his cool, be assertive, but not lose his temper. He should not yell or become unhinged at all based on the president s coding, or argumentative style. Make sure that you fight for what you believe in and for your supporters, but not going too far is important. President trump is definitely going to try to push his buttons. Resident trump he says he is not practicing. In some ways, he has been practicing since he began in 2016, he holds rallies, with message testing since he was elected four years ago, hes been doing this back and forth, in many ways he has been practicing for a very long time and understands how to defend his record and what messaging really works. I think the president that we are used to seeing is what we will see tonight. It was a similar situation when he debated with clinton. How do you think this will be different . The fact is this time, there is no real of audience. There are a couple of chairs spaced out with a couple dozen people, family and friends, some journalists. But not the applause, laughter, or the crowd booing. The candidates may dial it down a little bit because that audience applause line is going to look strange. The president especially really interacts with audiences well, he may have to change his approach a bit to accommodate the fact that there is no audience. A lot of voters probably have their minds made up. Wha t can the candidates hope to get out of this . It is a very polarizing time. It is true and debates are not where the candidates go to win, but it is where they can go to lose. You can give a good answer and people will forget it immediately. If you make a mistake, that is what will be put on the loop that people Pay Attention to. If i am advising candidates tonight, im sure their advisors have told them, you are not going to win tonight. All you can do is not lose. They hope to get out as unscathed as possible and then wake up tomorrow and keep campaigning. No doubt they will do that. We will lifestream the 6 00 and 7 00 newscasts, and we will have a full wrapup and reaction on a special edition of the kpix five news at 10 00 and 11 00. A series of minor earthquakes jolted the south bay this morning. The largest of the three quakes was a magnitude 3. 3. None of them caused any damage, but they did rattle some nerves. They could be linked to the soil along the calaveras fault. And it could lead to smaller quakes creeping along the fault line. This is the area near anglin, as we reported a little earlier, it is under a mandatory Evacuation Order. Checking in with paul, theres a lot of smoke and fire around the state. Yes. We have to track the conditions. The smoke billowing off that fire, the impact of air quality and the heat Building Back in, this is the fire danger here. Wind speed, wind direction, fire fuels. We want these numbers as low as possible. Today around two or three, over the weekend those were up to nine. Tomorrow will be fractionally higher. This is still on the lower end of the scale. Slightly stronger wind in the forecast, we stay below that midpoint, conditions are not going to be favorable for it to rapidly brace along as it did over the weekend. The onshore breeze has kept smoke flowing away from this most of the day. And the midlevel, the wind shifting around, we will see that smoke spreading across the bay area with the worst air quality on thursday with onshore breeze kicking back in on friday and saturday. Once again thats where the urged worst air quality is going to be. 97 degrees in livermore, there is the fog already creeping across the bay. 61 degrees downtown, dont get used to that. This is going to spread inland overnight and back up quickly with temperature swarming to a greater extent. Temperatures will start in the upper 50s and lower 60s. They will then warm up. Temperatures in the 70s, mid 80s in oakland. Triple digit heat east of the diablo rae and well above the 80s in other portions of the bay area with even hotter weather on the way for thursday and near record temperatures. We slowly drop back as we get into the first weekend of october. Also knew at 5 00, a key vote at the Palo Alto School district. It is all about whether or not to bring students back into the classrooms. Kit has more on the parents saying not so fast. Did you feel like they were moving too fast . It definitely felt like it. Many parents learned about the first plan before a short meeting a week ago. Board members favored students returning to class a few grades at a time, beginning with kindergartners and first graders. Half of the students will attend class for two and a half days and take the rest of the week off, while the rest of the class rotates in don austin reported to a District Survey that showed 62 of parents said atavor in person classes. They are showing as a plan of two or three days of teachers and two or three days on your own. That information was not given with the survey. Would you say the survey was misleading . It was misleading and didnt really include enough information. The parents organize to their own survey with nearly 400 respondents. 93 said they would rather Delay School Opening until a plan was revised. They said it was important that current classes and teachers stay together. If they choose distance learning, it would not be guaranteed to keep their current teacher. The option they are giving us are both a step back. The plan is evolving as we speak. Special classes like pe, music and library will be taught at home. Students will have two or three live sessions per day on two of the days at home. Parents are basically getting ready to pool our resources. They will be filing an injunction, and further action including a recall campaign against the board. The district had two different surveys and different results. Are they claiming that it speaks for the majority of parents in both cases . Good question. There are 12,000 students in this district. Organizers of the new survey said that the that is all the addresses they could get a hold of. We did ask the district to respond and they did not answer our questions. Thank you. And thank you for watching here at 5 00. The evening news is up next, followed by the president ial debate. We will be Live Streaming the 6 00 and 7 00 newscasts on cbsn bay area and at they do one of the most difficult jobs there is, even in normal times. Our Frontline Health care workers.
