Lets get straight to the Huge Campaign news, because yesterday, joe biden was endorsed by Scientific American. I assume because of all the horrible things trump has said about science and america. Now, this is unexpected because it is scientific Americans First president ial endorsement in its 175year history. Think of all the candidates that Scientific American did not feel compelled to throw their weight behind lincoln, f. D. R. , heck, they didnt even endorse hoover, and he invented the vacuum cleaner and this is not merely an endorsement of joe biden. The magazine warned that donald trump has badly damaged the u. S. And its people, because he rejects evidence and science not just rejecting it. He also defies science. I mean, its an affront to physics and gravity that someone remain upright with this posture. At the heart of Scientific Americans critique is trumps abysmal response to covid19. Hes denied the science. Hes lied about the science. Hes mocked the science. Come november 3, hes desperate that youll forget why youre standing six feet apart and why youre swaddled like the guys who came to take away e. T. Drew barrymore is on tonight. He tweeted out this picture of himself on air force one with a philly cheesesteak. Well, based on Michael Cohens book, im guessing its not the first time hes ordered something with extra whiz. Milk, milk, lemonade, around the corner slam is made. Stephen but this town hall wasnt trumps usual rabid rally crowd, it was made up of undecided voters. Wow, undecided i assume the night started with each of them being roused from a coma. What year is it . Whos president . put me back put me back and these undecided voters decided not to go easy on trump it costs me with copays, im still paying almost 7,000 a year in addition to the copay. And should preexisting conditions, which obamacare brought into brought to fruition be removed . No. Please stop and let me finish my question, sir. Stephen oh, shes living out all of our fantasies shes telling donald trump to stop talking until shes finished her question. And he stopped talking. Quick followup maam, could you keep asking that question until november 3 . Now one voter, just one was angry about trumps downplaying of the pandemic, something we heard trump admit to doing in a taped conversation with bob woodward. If you believe its the president s responsibility to protect america, why would you downplay a pandemic that is known to disproportionately harm lowincome families and minority communities . Yeah. Well, i didnt downplay it. I actually, in many ways, i up played it in terms of action. Stephen as trump i didnt downplay. In fact, i upplayed, and theres one thing i can promise you no foreplay. I dont believe in it. Its the devils waiting room. And you know hes lying, because we have him on tape. In fact, i think we have a tape that i think we gave to one of my editors, who i think i asked to remix into i think a dance track, and i think it goes a little like this. I didnt downplay it. I actually in many ways i up played it in terms of action. I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down. I still like playing it down. In many ways, i upplayed it down. Down, down. But its still great leadership. Stephen ah, yes, who can forget Winston Churchills famous radio address to the british people . We will fight on the beaches, we will fight on the landing grounds or not, the nazis will magically go away in april when the weather gets warmer. Stephen but churchill wasnt the only great leader trump compared himself to. I could be so pres i always used to sort of kid on the campaign trail that i could be trail that i could be more president ial be very easy more president ial than any other candidate, except for possibly Abraham Lincoln when hes wearing the hat. Stephen as trump very important that hes wearing the hat. Because dont kid yourself, lincoln was nothing without that hat, okay. The one undecided voter faulted trump for opposing the wearing of masks, but trump knew who to blame. I will say this, they said at the Democrat Convention theyre going to do a National Mandate. They never did it, because theyve checked out, and they didnt do it. And a good question is, you ask, like joe biden, they said, were going to do a National Mandate on masks. He didnt do it. I mean, he never did it. Stephen that is a brutal takedown of President Biden you know what, now that i think about it, perhaps joe biden doesnt deserve another four years perhaps we should give this blondeheaded newcomer a chance perhaps he could sell us some trombones of course we got trouble of course, trump is not promask and hes not alone. Hes following the example of the real experts. By the way, a lot of people dont want to wear masks. There are a lot of people that think the masks are not good, and there are a lot of people, as an example who are those people . Well, ill tell you who those people are. Waiters. They come over and serve you, and they have a mask. And i saw it the other day, when they were serving me and theyre playing with a mask. Im not blaming them. Im just saying what happens. Theyre playing with the mask. So the mask is over, and theyre touching it, and then theyre touching the plate. That cant be good. Stephen okay. So hes asked who he thinks doesnt think masks are a good idea, and his answer was waiters. Because i dont like what theyre doing. Trump cant even muster empathy in a thought experiment. Sir, i can promise you, theres one waiter who will take his mask off, and its whoever spits in your next bowl of soup. Now, trump brags about trying to fasttrack vaccines, but also that he doesnt need to. It would go away without the vaccine, george, but its going to go away a lot faster. It would go away without the vaccine . Sure, over a period of time. Sure, with time. It goes away. And many deaths. And youll develop youll develop, like a herd mentality. Stephen okay, i think he meant herd immunity, which is a large group of people developing immunity by sharing the disease freely, resulting in massive loss of life. The Trump Presidency has been four years of him making shocking and hatefilled remarks. Ive often wondered is there any message, anything he could, anything he could say, anything that he could put out that would cause him to lose his most loyal supporters . Well, to answer that question, i turned to someone else with a long history of making shocking remarks triumph, the insult comic dog. Over the last couple years, triumph has given the late show a series of hardhitting journalistic reports. Most recently, back in february, during simpler, happier times impeachment. And like me, triumph was curious about trumps supporters so he gathered some of them together. Jim . Despite the travesties of his coronavirus response, the failed economy, and californias exploding trees, President Trumps loyal followers have stuck with him through the good times and the end times. One wonders if anything the president says or does could cost him their herd mentality, so we brought these actual Trump Supporters to this actual focus Group Research center, where this actual moderator showed them a series of actual fake Trump Campaign ads. So im going to show you the ads, what you like about them, if theres anything you dislike, the message and then well have some other questions and things like that. Okay, here we go. dramatic music we all have seen how out of control the radical bidenharris liberals are getting. In portland, they now want do defund firefighters and ambulance corps. Its disgusting. Theyre passing legislation to rename every street black lives matter plaza. Its going to be incredibly confusing. Portland is already printing their own money but with no whites on it. The schools have gotten rid of the plus sign because it looks too much like the cross. And, of course, theyre tearing down our precious statues. We need to stop these people and ive got a plan. I think we go to the polls every two years anyway, just get more people out to the polls. Uhhuh. Not that long ago the president said something about maybe we should think about delaying the election. So how long should that be . Like, what would be reasonable for you . Six months. Six months. Shoot, we had eight years of obama. I think we could do six more months of trump. Could he do an executive order, though . I mean, is that possible . He can executive order anything. Hes president of the united states. This is the first time i wondered if masks really do cut off oxygen to the brain. Im blown away by how children are immune to the hong kong flueyvirus and it gave me a great idea. Since children cant get sick, why not send them into the workforce . The mexicans. Farmers. Communities that, you know, are in poverty. They are the ones that sell drugs. I dont do drugs. I mean its not like theyre trying to better themselves. I mean, its just really disgusting that there are a lot of people that are just lazy. Fun fact this is the same focus group that approved the game of thrones finale. Im going to share with you an audio file that has been uncovered and basically the concern is that theres some dirt thats going to come out, you know, that the medias going to be releasing this. So, let me play this for you. I dont know, i mean, i heard that microwaving kills the virus. I dont believe thats been proven. Now were going to wait around for proof . I mean we dont have that kind of time. I mean, have we tried putting a person in a microwave . Thats not possible. I dont mean look, i mean build a giant human size microwave. Why wouldnt you try it . I mean, whats the harm . We cant just put a human being in not human beings. We have all these immigrants in the camps, i mean, all these convicted convicts. We could offer them, i dont know, offer them a parole or just unlock the door and give them a head start. Are you joking, sir . No, im not joking. Im not being sarcastic. So lets say that there was some really good news coming out about, like, a vaccine, and trump was able to take credit for that. This one is about some potential good news about some vaccine research, and so lets take a look. I told you how i feel about these losers scientist people. Theyre way too slow, like sleepy joe. So guess what . While theyve been crying and waiting, i developed a vaccine. I put up my own money. I have a knack for this. My uncle was at m. I. T. Doctors say we have to test it more but it will be ready to roll out right after the election. Thats just around the corner. But i think its going to be terrific and tasty. The most delicious vaccine in history. Side effects may include abdominal pain, slight headaches, heartburn, and diarrhea like you wouldnt believe. Youve never seen diarrhea like this. Youll bleep so much youll get tired of bleep . Some people are really happy with these side effects. I mean, a lot of models pay to have that kind of diarrhea. Its a great way to lose weight. You wont like it but by the end, youll miss it, plus dizziness. May not work. Did i tell you i was going to fix this thing . My new vaccine, ready november 4 in florida, pennsylvania, ohio, wisconsin, michigan, and arizona, and possibly texas, if those numbers dont go up. What states should be the ones who get it first . The highest numbers i guess, you know, so like no, thats california and new york, we cant do that. Oh, never mind, duh. You cant do that. If were going to show one of these two people or say heres who we think should get the vaccine, who do you want to see get it, Oprah Winfrey or you know who these people were . I i mean, i cant i just said to you, ive never been able to maintain my cool or composure in life, so why start now when im here hanging out with you . Im obsessed with you in all the unlascivious, uncreepy ways stephen oh. Just, you know, in all the right and appropriate ways. Stephen okay, now i need you to straighten something out for me. Youre an actress, a producer, director, youre a bestselling author, youre an entrepreneur. How is this the first time youve done a talk show . You seem like a natural to do a talk show . Because essentially doing a talk show as i have learned doing a talk show youre hanging out with the audience and the audience is hanging out with you. Drew barrymore seems the easiest hang in the world. How has it taken you this long to get behind the desk . You know, first of all, im glad if you see this as a natural fit. I cant really think of anyone i trust the gut and instincts of more than someone like you. So, phew, a. Yay, second. Three, i have a sign on my wall that says, timing is everything. And i guess, i dont know, maybe everything sort of led up to this in a way . Maybe i have to say, honestly, no b. S. , i definitely im so relieved and glad that i wasnt doing this at any other point in my life. I think that it was better for me to go through a lot of different evolutions in my life and be able to put things into characters. I mean, im always bringing myself to the party. And you do comedy, and your whole legacy, you know, as much as we even try to sort of do a deep imitation or escape ourselves, were always there. Stephen right. But there was, you know as much as my life was so exposed in so many areas, i still had the comfort of getting my ya yas out in ways through characters. And this is, you know, all me. And yet, i dont have to ditch everything i love. Like i was just telling you, we were shooting, like, a wacky scene in our control room for a sketch were going to do, and i get to bring all of that experience into this. I dont think i would have done at least what im hopefully excited about doing and capable of now at any other point. That was the longest winded answer. Stephen let me just see if i can pare it down, see what i got, what i gleaned from that, what i sieved, what the gold i panned out of that was that, youve been an actress your whole life, now you have to be yourself and you like it. But it doesnt mean you have to leave the acting behind. Yes, thank you why couldnt i have said it that way . Stephen but you said it better. You said you want to bring late night to daytime. Yes stephen what does that mean . Do you want your audience to be sleepy or high . What do you want . laughs some of my mom friends were watching the premiere show, and i wanted to say a nod to some people i knew who were watching me and supporting me in my personal life, and i was like, i wonder if theyre having a cocktail . Oh, its 9 00 a. M. Well, you know, whatever. Stephen its covid. Yeah, exactly. Stephen its covid. I think that and i thought about this the other day and this was, like, a fresh objectivity moment for me, and it was actually my preparation for talking to you when you come on our show. Stephen i cant wait. And grace us with your presence. Stephen im looking forward to it. Comedy, to me, was a subconscious survivalist mechanism, and i gravitated towards when i was laughing, Everything Else fell away, and the world was awesome. It was okay. And, listen, Everybody Needs to think and feel or be told everythings going to be okay. And laughter did that for me. So, thats why i love you and what you do because i think laughter is medicine. And its necessary, and its important, and we need it. Its vital. When we all go through stuff everybody goes through stuff. No one lives a life that escapes the hard stuff. So, gosh, you need the comedy you need the lifeaffirming laughter. Stephen i 100 agree. Im thinking i can become more marketable. I got to about the third course and im like, you know, i probably could do this for a living. You dont need to be a computer expert to be great at this. These are skills lots and lots of people can learn. I feel hopeful about the future now. Its empowering to have that knowledge that nobody can take away from you. That nobody can take away from you. Drew barrymore, i want to talk about how you because starting one of these shows, for people who dont know, it seems like, oh, you plop down in a chair and you interview people. But no, theres so many moving parts to a show like yours. I know that. And you guys started working on this in february and then in march had to leave. How have you put, this is the only show i know of that is launching in the middle of covid. What has this been like to have to do this with like barbecue forks from a distance . We actually, in answer to that question, made a documentary called, making up. And i made it with my collaborator omar lagda and ive worked with him for 15 years. This is whats weird, too, about sometimes sharing things with people is you can only do it in a very safe and intimate way in order to put it out. And i felt safe enough with the people around me to sort of take people on this journey because it is rather it was rather fascinating to me to see how we pulled this off. And so i wanted to share that with people. Because i as a consumer also feel like i just see things presented in front of me, and i dont know the journey or the backstory even in these not unprecedented times. Theres, like, a weird Marketing Campaign and someone gets thrown out there and im like, okay, i guess there was a lot of thought behind this and a choice and now im going to sign up for it or not. And i thought that a better entry point would be to show all that work that youre talking about that does go into it and im used to work. I worked in diapers at 11 months old. I have an infallible work ethic, and this is really a big thing to accomplish, to lift, to put together. In some ways its so limitless that its like, you almost want a bumper rail or a boundary here and there. And then you have so many restrictions. And then, really, i just thought we were going to make the show of today and were all forced almost into a yesterday mentality and lifestyle because of covid. And i was, like, we should make the show of tomorrow because there is no rules and the rule book is on fire. And that was sort of like we had nothing to lose. And i felt a responsibility to create a transformative experience because so many people are stuck at home. And so it made me want to be an overachiever for everyone out there to have a destination, a place, an actual place to work and to go when you know, if anybody so chooses to even watch the show. Im such an unassuming person. But i swear to god i was determined to build something that i thought honored kind of some of the gentleness of old television, some of the comedy we all love. And to go a little technological, which for a boho weirdo hippie like me was totally unprecedented in my life. But i thought we have got to figure out how we move forward from here and the producer and me also wanted to figure this out. Its not that the show must go on, its that, you know, we get to have a job in this time and i wanted to honor that with the gratitude and the innovation that it deserved.
