She was jewish, a woman, and the ultimate deal breaker, a mother. And legal employers feared that i would be staying home more than i would be showing up for work. When her husband of 56 years died in 2010, Justice Ginsburg was back on the bench the next day. She credited their long and happy marriage to a piece of advice from her motherinlaw she said, dear, in every good marriage, it helps sometimes to be a little deaf. And i have followed that advice not only in dealing with my dear spouse but in dealing with my colleagues. Reporter the softspoken justice was good friends with her often bombastic conservative colleague antonin scalia. During an interview condicted with his widow more than a year after scalias death in 2016, ginsburg longed for a time when friendships like theirs were commonplace. That kind of collegiality, good relations, people who like and respected each other even though they disagreed on some important questions. My hope is that in my lifetime we will get back to the way it once was. Reporter jan crawford, cbs news. This morning there are many tributes for Justice Ginsburg. Supreme court chief Justice John Roberts writing, today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her tireless and resolute champion of justice. Former president barack obama says, quote, she was a warrior for gender equality, someone who believed that equal justice under law only had meaning if it applied to every single american. And House Speaker nancy pelosi writing, quote, we must honor Justice Ginsburgs trailblazing career and safeguard her powerful legacy by ensuring that the next associate justice upholds her commitment to equality and justice for all. Mourners quickly flocked to the steps of the Supreme Court in washington to pay their respects to ginsburg last night. There were other vigils held across the country as some americans chose to grieve her death collectively. Some of those who gathered at the Supreme Court remember ginsburg as a tireless fighter for womens equality. She feels like in a weird way like a grandma to me. And she she was the beacon when america felt lost. And i firmly believe that we would not be where we are today without her. President trump described Justice Ginsburg as, quote, a fighter to the end. He reacted to her death as he left a Campaign Rally in minnesota last night. Ruth Bader Ginsburg stood for all of us. Reporter fresh off his own Campaign Stop to minnesota, he made clear her replacement should be decided after the election. This was the position of the Republican Senate took in 2016 when there were almost ten months to go before the election. Thats the position the United States senate must take today. Today i am nominating chief judge Merrick Garland reporter Many Democrats are still reeling after the Gopled Senate passed over obama nominee Merrick Garland. The president has already named two justices to the bench. Friday night he touted his latest list of potential candidates. About 45 unbelievable people. Unbelievably, the smartest, the best, the absolutely cereme de a creme. Reporter Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell said President Trumps nominee will receive a vote on the senate floor, although he did not specify a timetable but trying to do there before the election do this before the election could be tricky. On average it takes about 69 days to get through the confirmation process. And theres just 45 days left until the general election. Dana . Thank you. Ginsburgs death is sure to set off another partisan battle during an already highly contentious election year. Here to discuss what this vacancy on the Supreme Court will mean is cbs News White House correspondent paula reid. Shes at the Supreme Court. And cbs news Political Correspondent ed okeefe. Paula, lets start with you. We just heard mentioned some of this at the end of the report, will President Trump nominate a successor to ruth Bader Ginsburg . Reporter good morning, dana. Sources tell me the president will absolutely nominate a replacement and do everything in his power to push that person through even if he is not elected to a second term. Just last week the president released names of possible people he would consider for any Supreme Court vacancy. The list included judges hes already appointed to the federal bench including senators liked at the ted cruz. Back in 2016 following the death of justice antonin scalia, candidate trump released a similar list. That list prompted a lot of conservatives, particularly evangelical christians, to give him another look and ultimately helped propel him to the white house. The president has said aside from issues of war and peace, this is the most important decision an american president can make. So far some are framing the election as a referendum on covid and the president s facing of covid19. How do you see this impacting the election now . Reporter it will be significant because the majority of voters say that the Supreme Court is an important factor in how they vote. This comes at a tumultuous time for President Trump. His handling of the covid19 pandemic is not seen favorably by majority of voters. As you know, the Biden Campaign is trying to frame this as a referendum on his handling of covid, and this gives the Trump Campaign a chance to reframe this election as a referendum on the Supreme Court. And for President Trump, thats good news. Thats an opportunity for him to potentially galvanize independent voters, women, and those voters who dont like him or his twitter accounts. Hes also out ahead of his opponent because hes already released this list. Now the Biden Campaign, joe biden has said that he would like to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court. But he has not released a list of names. The Campaign Says theyre working on it, but voters do not have that information at this point. Lets turn to ed now. Ed, what can we expect to hear from the trump and Biden Campaigns as far as messaging goes . Is this going to be the dominant message for the next 45 days here . Reporter certainly win for the republicans, jeff. Look, the Trump Campaign message right now or the slogan, one of them, promises made, promises kept. The biggest promise to conservative voters is not only putting two Supreme Court justices on the bench, but also hundreds of judges on district and appeals courts across the country. Recordsetting numbers. They have essentially cleared the vacancy list. Four years ago, one in five voters went to the polls and told us on leelection day they were there because of the Supreme Court. This was in the final days of the 2016 campaign the reason that the Republican Coalition coalesced behind donald trump because despite the concerns they might have had about him. They have been running that playbook again. Vice president pence especially has been traveling the country telling evangelicals and conservative audiences dont forget, you elect joe biden, youre going to get liberal justices on the court. You keep us in place, youll get more conservative justices. Now the message gets amplified. Joe biden, however, turns around and says, makes an argument that was made four years ago. The voters should pick a president , and that president should elect a successor to Justice Ginsburg, arguing that let this election go through, then lets start the nomination and confirmation process. Republicans will turn around and say we did elect a president , we elected him four years ago, and donald trump is ready to put on a successor. Ed, as paula mentioned, joe biden has not released a potential list of nominees. Why not . And will he now . Reporter so i was the one that asked him about this in june. I said, the president has a list, he put it out four years ago. Would you do the same thing . There have been liberal organizations pushing him arguing that just as its an issue for the right it should be a galvanizing issue on the left. Biden told me one thing i hesitate to do is follow anything this president does because he does it all wrong. But he said, i will at some point release a list of the black women that i would consider nominating to the Supreme Court after theyre fellow vetted. Last week when the list of released by the president we asked the Biden Campaign wheres the list, we heard nothing. They are likely now to face renewed pressure to come up with that list, put it forth, and give voters a sense of who these black women are that he would consider to put on the court. Certainly a subject of debate. Paula now, how will this process play out on capitol hill . Reporter well, buckle up. Last night, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell confirmed that the president s nominee will get a vote on the floor, but typically Supreme Court nominees take months for a confirmation. Its unlikely this will happen before the election. But there will be a time during a lame duck session after the election to push this through. Now of course Mitch Mcconnell famously denied former president barack obama, his nominee, Merrick Garland. But going forward, its expected that mcconnell will try to use this vacancy to galvanize supporters in november, arguing that they need momentum behind this nominee even for the lame duck session. Its important to note, though, right before her death, Justice Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughters saying that her most perfect wish is that i will not be replaced until a new president is installed. It appears that the wheels are in motion for that wish not to be granted. Paula reid, ed okeefe, we thank you this morning for being here. Coming up in our next hour, well take a closer look at ginsburgs legacy when we speak to Jeffrey Rosen. He knew Justice Ginsburg for nearly 30 years and interviewed her extensively for his book conversations with rbg. Thats ahead. Turning to other news now. President trump is contradicting top federal Health Officials and insisting a Coronavirus Vaccine will be available much sooner than some in his own administration expect. On friday mr. Trump said more than 100 million doses of the vaccine will be ready by the end of this year. That is more than double the most optimistic forecast from the centers for disease control. The president also said distribution will begin within 24 hours after the vaccine is ready. He also cut the timeline for widespread distribution. Hundreds of millions of doses will be available every month, and we expect to have enough vaccines for every american by april. During his congressional testimony on wednesday, cdc director Robert Redfield said under oath that a vaccine would probably not be readily available to the general public until next summer or fall. After two weeks of historic fires in washington its the states worst nightmare. Over 56 fires in the first day of labor day, and 600,000 acres burned in literally 72 hours. With the count already affected by the pandemic, the deadline was moved up by the Trump Administration, a controversial decision that is now being challenged. For now, officials in montana, the big sky state, are trying to get it done with a big reward on their minds. Major garrett reports. Reporter big sky, its the states name and a way of living. To be in montana is to behold sweeping vistas and seemingly endless horizons. There are practical angles, too, like power in washington. Montana has one member of congress for its 147,000 square miles. Montana believes it has enough population for a second house seat, something it hasnt had since 1993. But first it has to prove it through a successful census of its roughly one million or so population. Library open monday through friday reporter on radio during your duty and be counted reporter at libraries and on bulletin boards, the message is as constant as the prairie wind. Be counted. That is more challenging than it sounds. Take simple delivery by mail of a census form. Oftentimes they dont have traditional mailing addresses. And as a result, they have not received the notifications from the census. And so we have about a quarter of the state that has been not getting the information. Reporter mike cooney, montanas lieutenant governor, said after labor day, montanas census Response Rate is 59 . Montana gets about 2 billion a year from the federal government based on the census. When we do not count a montanan who should be counted, that equals about 20,000 over the tenyear period of the census. Things were moving along well, then covid hit. All of the events that the state was planning to promote the census had to be canceled. Reporter most of montana, as you might imagine, is rural. Many residents receive their mail at a post office box. The Census Bureau only sends forms to addresses. If the letter carrier does not match every post office box to the corresponding address, census forms go undelivered. Amid the pandemic, millions of americans have filled out the census on line, taking pressure off the postal service. Montana has a problem with that, too. Only 59 has broadband internet. When you have a system for the seeitfirst time where were the first time where were asking people to selfreport and you dont have the ability to do that, you have to make adjustments very quickly. Thats why weve engaged libraries throughout the state where they do have connectivity. Theyre just curious. Theyre just like little kids. Reporter Lynette Oconnor said connectivity proved a bigger challenge than the standard ten census questions. Probably longer to get into the internet than to fill it out. Reporter the state has outfitted its 119 libraries with highspeed internet. A real break for 88yearold raf te tendby. I dont use a computer that much. Its easier to have somebody else help me. From philadelphia to portland, officials are working to move people from encampments into shelters. Some advocates for the homeless say the Emergency Shelter model isnt working. Instead, they endorse whats called a housingfirst approach, giving people effortsed into homelessness a permanent place to live. Advocates say the change has reduced homelessness in places like new orleans, new york, and colorado where Barry Petersen reports. Reporter some things are obvious at this busy denver construction site like how these 14 units are so small they are called tiny houses. And the notsoobvious, that these tiny houses may make a big difference in solving homelessness. Housing solves homelessness. The only way that were going to solve homelessness is to continue building housing. Reporter how much space are we talking about . 96 square feet. There will also be a front porch that attaches here in front of the double doors. Reporter Cole Chandler is an ordained mennonite minister who organized and now runs the tiny house project called Colorado Village collaborative. So we provide people their own space, their own four walls, their own door that they can lo lock, they can keep their things and pets and rebuild their lives. Reporter the first project was built three years ago. A shared kitchen, shower, and bathroom are all in one building. Tough on the streets when you dont have a place to take care of yourself and rest. Reporter being here offered robert a way off the streets. I have my own bed. I have a table to eat and study. And my own fridge. And i would say spacious enough for a person to live in a space to keep their storage and stuff. Reporter with 5,000 homeless in denver, these are meant to be a transition to longterm housing like this 31apartment building in boulder that was built to give the homeless a permanent place to live. Where we met ravos who builds electric bikes in his apartment that sell for about 1,800. My word. These are the electric bikes . This is the current project reporter this is amazing. That one there is my daily driver right now. Reporter what was the worst night or the worst day that you had when you were homeless, ray . I was sitting in a bar, spending my last 2 and change on a beer. I was cold. And you know, just remember reading stories about freezing to death. You know, not that painful. You know, you feel warm. I was considering it. Reporter giving up . Yeah. Reporter just going out and freezing to death . Yeah. Reporter now vose has a place of his own. Here residents sign a lease and pay rent as a portion of any income such as Social Security or disability. Greg harms, ceo of Boulder Shelter for the homeless, lays out the rules. Just like anybody else who lives in an apartment, if youre going to have your friends over and have loud parties, thats not acceptable. If youre going to trash your apartment, thats not acceptable. If you dont pay your rent, thats not acceptable. As long as you meet the obligations of your lease while youre staying here, youre welcome to stay. Reporter once there is housing, then comes dealing with problems like alcohol and drug abuse, illness, unemployment. So theres not a requirement that you become sober. Theres not a requirement that you get on your meds. Theres not a requirement that you find employment. Because what weve found is when you put those requirements in place, then people are inevitably not able to meet one of those requirements, and their housing is in jeopardy. And thats not the goal. The goal is to keep them housed. What happens when reporter housing has its critics. Chief among them, Robert Marbut jr. , President Trumps executive director of the u. S. Interagency council on homelessness. He favors heavy policing like that seen in cities that have dismantled Homeless Housing on the streets. But Housing First actually cuts down costs of police time dealing with the homeless and housing the homeless in jail. What do the studies show about the cost of housing versus the cost of Law Enforcement . Well, to house somebody in a Permanent Supportive Housing Program is 15,000 to 20,000. The cost if theyre on the streets is probably about 40,000, 45,000. Reporter half . Less than half. Reporter Michael Dougherty is the Boulder County da. Why is this better for the community . I think were all better served having a place where Homeless Individuals can stay a night, be connected to resources and housing that they need, and i think thats a better longterm approach. Makes fiscal sense, and its also more humane. Reporter the hardest is neighbors who fear violence. What do you say then to people who look at the idea of putting something in this in their neighborhood and theyre like, no, no, we dont want, you know, drug users and alcoholics, and we dont want Police Coming all day and all night . It hasnt been our reality. And if you look at the crime map of boulder, the area that were in right now is probably one of the safest and least crime reported areas in the city. Reporter every day in boulder just like across america, there are still homeless who come for a people and a bed fora a meal and a bed for a night. But with Housing First, there are more and more like ray vose. Im enjoying building these ebikes. And you know, ive sold one bike to a neighbor. You know, maybe thats maybe thats something that can happen. Reporter the point here is that theres now a chance for something to happen. Yeah. Reporter you look forward. Yes. Yes, forward. Reporter a life now with a chance to head in the right direction. For cbs this Morning Saturday, Barry Petersen, boulder. The smile, the twinkle in his eye that you saw at the end there something humane. Its cheaper than living on the street. Youre off the street. A Public Library is supposed to be just that open and available to all residents of a community. About that wasnt always the case. More than a half century ago, a young mississippi girl and her friends applied for Library Cards but were rejected on account of their race. The sting of that incident never faded for one woman, but now its been eased by an unexpected letter. In 1964 mississippi, 15yearold teri mojgani spent her summers learning. It was freedom summer, and racial tensions were high. Even Young Children were engaged in the movement. This is 1964. It was mississippi freedom summer where there would be Voter Registration drives. This is kind of the height almost of the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s. And it was decided that there should be a childrens program, freedom schools, in order to educate children also about black history. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, mojgani and five classmates in hattiesburg wanted to test their newfound liberties. We wanted to do something that was important. So we decided to go to the library. Reporter sandr adickes, a white teacher, escorted her six students to the library. They were all denied high braer cards and told Library Cards and told to leave. Feeling dejected, they went for lunch at a lunch counter where sandra would be denied service. So their policy apparently was that because of the law they had to serve us now, but they had been instructed to not serve whites in the presence of blacks. She sued crest, and the case was eventually heard by the u. S. Supreme court ruling in her favor. Even with that legal victory, she still thought about the library card she never received. 56 years later, mojganis son sent a letter to the library informing them of the incident. The library replied. Teri mojgani, ms. Mojgani, im so honored to be able to provide to you a library card for the library of hattiesburg. We have registered you under the name that should have been on the card issued to you in 1964. Reporter the Current Library director, sean farrell, was very happy he could be a part of this healing moment. I feel a real sorrow, a sorrow that people were denied the very basic everyday rights that other people basically took for granted. Reporter mojganis passion for reading wasnt deterred by not getting her First Library card. She became a middle school, high school, and University Librarian and even coowned a Childrens Book store and earned a librarian degree in her 40s. As i said to the last person who had hired me to work in a library, that i think that i also wanted to prove that all librarians werent mean. Thats certainly how i saw that person in the Hattiesburg Library that day. You know, its part of the image that goes with librarians. And i wanted to dispel that. She certainly did. Well, teri tells us she was denied the card in 1964. Even though her sons received the letter from the Library Director in july, they waited until august 14th, 2020, to give it to her so it would be 56 years ago to the day after that incident. I like that the old name is on the card she should have gotten that long time ago. Amazing. The impact that had on her, to watch what he dsubcommitte she life. How she immediately went to that moment, how she felt and how it meant so much to her. It just you dont know the impact of denial. And when you admit that it was wrong later, what that can mean to somebody, too. Yeah. All right. Dont forget to record cbs this Morning Saturday. Coming up in our next hour, you only live twice. Back in 2018, late show Host Stephen Colbert ran through an intense workout with Supreme Court justice ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was 85 years old at the time. Ginsburg had been doing the onehour workout routine for about 20 years. She once called her trainer, bryant johnson, the most important person in her life. She answered so matter of no. Did look a little the dry wit maybe, too. Unbelievable. Her strength, physical strength and mental strength. Absolutely. Now you know why she beat cancer so many times. Then he wrote the book that became the mob classic good fellas, and he just wrote the book on how the movie was made. Well talk to both men as we mark the 30th anniversary of Martin Scorseses classic. From africa to atlanta, chef and restauranteur Justin Anthony brought the street foods of his native south africa to his adopted hometown. And theyve proven to be a hit. Well meet him on the dish. Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end, a line from closing time, from semisonic. The minneapolis rockers are living the lyrics, recording again after life two decades. Well talk to singer dan wilson, and theyll perform. That is ahead. We begin this hour with the death of ruth Bader Ginsburg who was as much a justice on the Supreme Court as she was a cultural icon to a Younger Generation of women. Ginsburg lost her battle with pancreatic cancer last night. She was 87 years old. Ginsburg served 27 years on the court, becoming just the second woman on the bench when she was nominated by president bill clinton in 1993. She dedicated much of her career to advancing womens rights, arguing several landmark genderdiscrimination cases. In recent years, her pointed opinions often supporting civil rights helped her achieve rock star status. She was affectionately known by her initial, rbg. Flags have been lowered to half staff throughout washington, and vigils were held in her memory. Fully aware of the political fight ahead, ginsburg reportedly dictated a final statement to her granddaughters. It reads, quote, my most fervent wish is that i will not be replaced until a new president is installed. President trump is likely to nominate a replacement for ginsburg before novembers election. George Washington University law professor Jeffrey Rosen first met Justice Ginsburg in an elevator in 1991 when he was just a young law clerk for the u. S. Court of appeals. That brief encounter led to a nearly 30year friendship that included the justice officiating at his wedding to his wife lauren. He is the author of the book conversations with rbg, ruth Bader Ginsburg on life, love, liberty, and law. She joins us from washington. Good morning. Good morning. What do you remember from that very First Encounter with rbg . Well, i remember i was incredibly intimidated because she was coming down from a workout routine and was completely silent. To break the ice, because i couldnt think of anything else to say, i said, what operas have you seen recently . That was the right question to ask. She blossomed and got enthusiastic. We started talking about opera. I didnt even know she was an opera fan. That began theis lifelong friendship, one of the greatest blessings and honors of my life which was based on 30 years of conversations about music, life, and law. Opera, not a question would come off the top of my head. Can you tell us your thoughts on both her life and her passing . Its impossible to overstate the degree to which she inspired everyone who spent time with her to be our best selves. The National Constitution center, which i just did an amazing tribute video to her which broadcast two nights ago, and its astonishing to watch i hope youll check it out on line. We assembled her favorite Opera Singers and special friends like gloria steinem, kate mckinnon, who plays her on saturday night live, jennifer lopez, others who met and admired her. All of them talked about the fact that whenever youre not using every moment of the day productively, focused on helping others and improving society, you think, what would rbg do . Then you just buckle down and get back to work. And its just the most daunting example of selfdiscipline and devotion to the ideal of a more equal america that any of us has ever encountered and, as a result, we were honored to live in the presence of one of the most influential changes influential advocates for constitutional change in american history. She is a figure of historic proportions, as chief Justice Roberts said. And it was such an honor to have the blessings of knowing her. So much was covered in her life in your book, tried to cover so many of those topics and conversations that spanned decades. What did you want people to take away from it . Be your best self. Work on just using her words work on something larger than yourself that can improve society and help the less fortunate. Be inspired by how much you can accomplish every day if you set aside unproductive emotions. Her mother told her this, and she often noted that when you get caught up in anger, jealousy, and fear, you get distracted from productive work. Its very hard, and she did it better than anyone else. Just using every moment of the day to be your best self and to help others be their best self and to improve society. Its an inspiration for all of us. Professor, in the last decade or so she went from not just Supreme Court justice to cultural icon, rbg. What did she make of that notoriety, and how did it change her . She was amused by it, and it didnt change her. Of course, she didnt know who who the notorious b. I. G. Was, her law clerks had to tell her basically. And she was so surprised when people would stop her on the street and ask her to take selfies. Remember, she was a judges judge, she had been under the radar for even when she joined the Supreme Court. There was nothing compared to her current celebrity. But there was a big change in 2013 in her dissenting opinions. She started to speak with great force and power because she thought the Supreme Court had changed, and it was her responsibility to speak for the voice of liberalism and those unbelievable dissenting opinions are so inspiring. It would be great for viewers to read them today, to remind them of her liberal legacy. Well, thank you, professor, for sharing at such a difficult time and time of loss. We appreciate it. It is now six minutes after the hour. Heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Its a taste of bond across the pond. And it will show up again in no time to die, this falls upcoming band bond release. It has a stronger character, and visually its got that character. Its got eyes, its got a face, it has a language and a presence. Reporter the new old db5s are continuity cars, not replicas. Each one painstakingly handmade using the very same materials and techniques including the lightweight aluminum body. To say this is a lost art doesnt really go far enough. And to call Charlie Briggs a panel beater doesnt go far enough. You want to sort of caras the material into shape as opposed to batting it into shape. Caress the material, yeah. Reporter and after all that caressing, it takes 400 hours just to paint a single car. Youll be using this aston martin db5. With a 3. 5 million price tag in mind for a car with fake machine guns which mean its not even street legal thats it. Reporter was time to get the full bond experience. Oh, its such a fun car. Its it drives like an old car. It was the lap of luxury at the time and smells like leather and musk and testosterone with a hint of shaken martini. I can see where sean connery, how he kept fit. All he had to do was drive the car exactly. Reporter it handles like a 56yearold car ought to. Not that i was allowed to play with any of the gadgets. Now can i press the button for the oil slick . The Martin Scorcese epeck starring Robert De Niro, joe pesci, and ray liotta. It was a watershed moment for gangster movies. A book is out detailing the making of good fellas and why it remains so relevant today. The book is called made men. And it proves behind the movie the truth is even better. As far back as i can remember, i always wanted to be a gangster. Why does good fellas remain so relevant today . Well, despite the fact that its about incredibly degenerate people, good fellas remains pertinent because its a fun movie to watch. Its a real trip. Reporter glenn kenny is the author of made men. The book tells the story of the making of good fellas which sits in the middle of the great gangster trifecta. The godfather, good fellas, and the sopranos. The the shots are incredible. The action is incredible. The acting is unbelievable. There are so many individual scenes that are quotable. Come on [ bleep ] lets go for a ride. [ bleep ] be the [ bleep ] wise guy not on network tv. Not usually on network tv. Genius good fellas is about henry hill played by ray liotta. As he enters the Italian Mafia at the peak of its power. I got the most expensive thing they had before everything came crashing down. This is a guy who doesnt have much power. He gets by because he doesnt need power. Hes not looking for anything more than being a criminal because it loves it. You can park anywhere you want. To get the full story, the first source kenny spoke to was journalist turned author nick pileggi. It was his book, wise guy, publish in 1985, that began it all. Nick pileggi is one of the great not just crime writers in america but one of the great nonfiction writers in america. Reporter pileggi started as a print reporter in 1956 with the juiciest assignment you could imagine covering the mob and jimmy hoffas teamsters. Since i was getting so much crime story and crime stories were so big at the time, just a few years before the godfath s godfather, i began keeping notes. Reporter after decades of shoe leather crime and city hall reporting, in the early 80s, pileggi was contacted by a former gangster then in the witness protection program. That would be henry hill. My background in the subject was invaluable because it opened him up. It allowed him to take another step. Instead of being instructional to economy, he was to me, he was able to be emotional. Wake up, henry. Hill wasnt supposed to be talking to anyone, but the true stories he gave pileggi became the basis for wise guy. I felt i wanted to read about the street guy, not the boss. I wanted instead of writing about napoleon, i wanted to write a book about someone in napoleons army. There was jimmy and tommy and me, and there was anthony how you doing . Reporter wise guy got the attention of Martin Scorcese. And went up in the big screen as good fellas. Pileggi also cowrite the screenplay. Come on. Dont be like that what do you mean the violence on the screen in good fellas and in the book is horrific. It was as bad in real life . Worse. The thing about scorsese at his best, and hes usually very close to his best, is that he always puts life on the screen. What are you doing . What happened . Nothing what happened to you . That doesnt mean hes a realistic director. He often uses for lurid effects to get there. But you always feel like a pulsing, vivid sense of what the characters going through. And that runs throughout the entire running time of good fellas. What did you bring . All right. Bread. Good. Kenny also talks about how some have knocked unconventional editing. You talk about continuity, but the filmmakers thought it was more important to get a performance than to have everything look perfect in terms of continuity. Martin scorceses regular editor since 1980, this is a powerful quote, you cant actually say it on network television, but she says matching is for and its a sin nom synonym with wimps. She believes the performance and believer believability are as important as the sirars in your hand. What was Martin Scorcese thinking when he made good fellas . Its decidedly different from his relationship with the subject matter of some of his major films prior to that. Taxi dri taxtaxi driving, ra the obsession, jealousy. Those were aspects of scorseses own character that were explored in those films. In good fellas, theres a little bit more detachment. Good fellas beyond marking a moment of transition and triumph for scorsese was also the rare case when a great movie matched the quality of a great book. The list of writers who have done a book and then gone on to do a screenplay and had a seamless transition and been happy with the final product thats on screen is very limited. You know why most writers are not, god bless them, journalists. They did not have to sit in an office correcting their material every day. A writer, especially novelist, they live two and three and maybe four years all alone, solitary. They own the novel. If the walls are red, they want those walls red. They wind up in a movie studio where the owner of the studio doesnt like red. Well, that can become a very emotional thing for them. I think my training as a journalist, you had to be cooperative, you had to help. We want to make this damn thing as good as possible. You know, you might actually have an idea thats better than mine. Guys, good trip, good life. 30 years after good fellas was released, nick pileggi is looking back with pride but more amusement. I make you laugh. Im here to [ bleep ] amuse you. I wish i could do it all over because it was fun. Hes fantastic. And fun to watch. I mean, i had to rewatch it when i knew it was coming up. I have never seen the movie from beginning to end you have to watch this weekend. Requirement. Okay. Its one of those movies that when its on, you stick with it. I dont doubt it. Okay. The book is really good, made men, reveals a lot of stuff that didnt know before. A trip to south africa coming up next in the dish. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. He wasnt a trained chef but always thought the food of his native south africa might be a big hit in this country. He was right, epanneding to a handful of eat reece. Then the pandemic hit, and he took to feeding his community. Prepping and delivering meals to Frontline Health care workers at hospitals near his bar. One of those eateries. Before the turn of events, i had the chance to sit down with anthony as we all used to do and enjoy a culinary tour of his homeland. So welcome. I love. It here at billtong bar, Justin Anthony brings the street food of his native south africa to atlanta. Its different from beef jerky in that its air dried kind of like a dry aged steak. Now weve got our traditional right here. Okay. This one right here is peri. The its going to be spicy. The cured meat is a South African staple brought by the dutch four centuries ago. Whats interesting is that literally on every street corner, every butcher you go into, its everywhere. It very much only exists in south africa. And he says south africas unique cuisines are a direct result of its makeup. South africa has 11 official languages. The same with the food. Youve got french, portuguese, dutch, german, english, indian, malaysian, and mediterranean influences. Like theres so much going on. If somebody asked you now what is South African cuisine, in a sentence, what would you say . South african cuisine is a fusion of i hate using the word fusion. Basically its taking your taste buds on safari. Anthony would eventually bring thea is farry to america the safari to america, but it was sports that brought him here 25 years ago. I moved to atlanta in 96 before the olympics. I moved here to play professional soccer. Thats how i ended up in atlanta. Unfortunately or fortunately for all of us, soccer didnt work. Yeah. I had a knee injury and was struggling to play at the level i wanted to play at. I made a conscious decision to retire uncertain. What career might be next, he had an epiphany. In the mid to late 90s there were a lot of South Africans moving. I grew around up. Im going to open a South African pub restaurant. And everyone thought i was crazy. Because its not that easy to do. This was 97, there was like no such thing as a South African restaurant. Literally i went from being a professional Soccer Player to a waiter at a restaurant. Learning the business. All of these dishes have been a staple since day one. Anthony, an old child, convinced his parents, diane and derek, to leave johannesburg and join him here in the states. I mean, now that i think about it, it was terrifying. But i mean, you know we did what we had to do. Right. To make ourselves happy and to be with justin. Thats what parents do, isnt it . Yeah. Together they crafted a menu that encompasses the many flavors and spices of home. In 1998 they opened what they believe was the first South African restaurant in the u. S. Ten Degrees South, south africas location from the tropic of capricorn. Lets dig in. We shared dishes like chicken curry, periperi chicken, and calamari. What was it really like in the early days of first of all trying to come up with this, but then also working with your son . Its a different thing to work with family than working with other people. I think it worked well. I mean, we were so busy trying to make things work. And we were doing everything. I mean, every single one of us knew how to bartend, serve, be in the kitchen. All of us. Now along with ten Degrees South, anthony operates four Restaurant Concepts in atlanta, including billtong bar, yubo beach house, and cape dutch. Every time i eat curry or periperi i start sweating. He calls ten Degrees South the mother ship with other spots stemming from it. Im not shy. Im reaching go for it. We have a saying in south africa, get stuck in. Get all right. The whole thing. And the right way to eat it take it out of the shell and chew the shell and suck it so you get the taste you can get you get the real taste. I wouldnt say the right way. Thats his way. Thats his way. Did you ever imagine when your son was playing soccer that this would become the future . No. No. I thought that he was going to do sports psychology, and that was that. And instead a Family Business. Uhhuh. Clears heers to that. Cheers to that. The family has hosted a veritable whos who from Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro to aaron rogers and lebron james. Which dessert am i about to try . Called daz delight. This is the the famous lebron james dessert is what somebody whos an nba fan would say . Its a rivf of a south africn dessert called malba pudding. Oh, my gosh. Even without the ice cream would be delicious. Yes. Yeah, lebron james famously ate i think seven or eight before dinner. He played for the heat. They were in town. Anthony says its his sports background that Team Philosophy and work ethic he had on the field which played a big part of building success in the restaurant industry. Theres no such thing as an easy business. You want to be a successful athlete, you better work hard. You want to be a successful business owner, you ought to work hard. Nothing happens easy, you have to work for it. To know that you came here to play soccer and youve created a Family Business of restaurants, for you whats that like . You know, sometimes i have to pinch myself. Its kind of the american dream. And the name of the restaurant group, true story brands. He says thats because it is a true story that they were able to build this here in america, the american dream. I really miss our dishes. I know sit there and i know. Prepandemic, yeah. Yeah. This morning on our saturday session, the minneapolis bands that may be semi sonic, my bad, may be best known for their iconic hit closing time. Three years after its release, it was their closing time. They stopped performing and recording alltogether, a hiatus that would last almost two decades until a reunion three years ago. Before we hear their new music, Anthony Mason talked with dan wilson about the very long pause in their journey. Closing time time for you to go reporter in the 90s, dan wilson and his band semisonic became alt rock darlings with hits like closing time. I know who i want to take me home did i read that you wrote closing time in 25 minutes . I know i wrote it, but it basically happened to me. Thats probably the best feeling. If i write a song in 20 minutes, i feel like im im just a portal to, you know, some other like source. But by 2001, wilson and his minnesota band mates, decided to go their separate ways. Why did the band stop touring 20 years ago . I had a baby that spent a long, long time in the hospital. And came home with a lot of complex medical needs. You know, we had at that point been on the road for eight years with one band and seven with the other. And i kind of felt like i had done that and needed to be with family. Wilson went to l. A. And became a songwriter for hire. His first big client carole ki king. One true love come is insane because shes like my childhood idol. And that essentially was a beautiful master class in cowriting. One thing i learned from carole king in our session if i had an idea she would say how about this instead and would play an entirely new thing. Id go, maybe. Shed go, or this. Shed come up with a third thing. And i was oh, thats what you do. You keep coming up with ideas until the other person goes, yeah. He went on to cowrite not ready to make nice with the dixie chicks which won him a grammy for song of the year. And he also cowrote sun like you with someone like you with adele. She said, dan had me on my hands and knees crying my eyes out. Theres something about him that made me completely open up as a composer. Oh, thats amazing. Adele is one of the most brilliant people ive ever worked with. But as wilson became successful writing for others, he lost the knack of writing for his own group. When i would go back to try to write a song for semisonic, once in a while to see if i could come up with something, i would have this feeling that i dont remember how to be that guy anymore. It took me a long time to remember. Yeah. You found him, though. I found that guy. I mean, maybe he was already there. The only thing to do is write a song that led to youre not alone. Semisonics first new music in nearly two decades and the brought dan wilson the songwriter and solo artist back with his band. You need all of them . You know, with semisonic, one thing ive been reminded of is just how homey it is to play loud music with them. How just how comforting it is. And i dont know if i need that, but it certainly is a joy. Its like a treat. Back together and performing from their new ep youre not alone from minneapolis, los angeles, and here in new york city, here are semisonic all it would take. There was a time when i believed that all it would take is one look one heart to change me there was a time when i could see a straightaway line for someone somehow to wake me but innocence and dreams change and dreamsing fades a waste on the vine when all it would take is one voice one light one hand writing the words of one choice one fire one pen changing the world within me and around me changing the world within me and around me thats all it would take there was a time when i could fly id open my mind and nothing was above me i felt i could climb the mountains high but then when i reached the summit was it just me the darkest night of disbelief and hope could fade or start to ignite and all it would take it one voice one light one hand one writing the words of one choice one fire one men changing the world within me and around me changing the world within me who would have known thats all it would take within me and around me changing the world within me there was a time when i believed that all it would take is one look one heart to change me nicely done.
