You could watch football, baseball, tennis. And big stuff happened in all of it. Yes. It was a good weekend for sports. The president heads to california for an update on the wildfires. Outside los angeles, the cell phone video shows massive flames from a bob cat fire engulfing trees in a national forest. That fire has grown to more than 33,000 acres forcing evacuations. Crews flew over the flames and dumped water on them. In oregon at least 34 fires are burning. More than a billion acres have been blackend. Some of the worst flames are just south of portland making air quality in that city the worst in the world according to one major index. Since last tuesday there have been at least 26 deaths from wildfires in california, oregon, and washington. If you go back to august 15th about a month ago, at least 35 people have died. Less than three weeks after hurricane laura, americas gulf coast is preparing for another potentially devastating storm. That would be Tropical Storm sally currently gaining strength in the gulf of mexico. It is forecast to become a hurricane later today. Before making land fall sometime tomorrow. Likely in eastern louisiana. Heres a look at some of the flooding the storm has already caused in the state of florida. This is on the ocean side of the state in miami. People in louisiana have been filling sandbags. And some mandatory evacuation orders are in place. The governors of louisiana and mississippi have declared states of emergency. Our meteorologist and climate specialist is following all this for us. Jeff, good morning to you. Good morning, tony. And good morning everybody. I think its worth mentioning were going to talk about this becoming only a cat 1 hurricane. We stress that just because its only a cat 1, it doesnt mean it cant be catastrophic. First, theres going to be nearly cat 3 type storm surge with the system. And in addition because its going to move so slowly, easily well see two feet of rain, some places 30 inches of rain. It is a dangerous storm. Look at the satellite. Its been disshelved and lopsided. The centers on the western side of the thunderstorms. Thats because we have strong wind shear over the system. It could relax enough to become a cat 1 or borderline cat 2. But notice how slowly it moves. Maybe moving 150 miles in 48 hours and thats going to dump a lot of rain and probably cause a lot of surge because of the angle its hitting the coast. You can see the counterclockwise flow driving the water into mississippi and louisiana. 7 to 11 feet of deadly storm surges possible. Be careful and look at 12, 18 inches, some places more than 2 feet of rain. Thats the most dangerous part. The atlantic is on fire. Five systems, Tropical Storm teddy formed earlier today. We are on a record pace three weeks ahead of record pace in the atlantic. Pretty soon well tap into the greek alphabet. Thats how unprecedented 2020 is. Tony as a teddy at home. Were hoping hes okay. Thank you very much. Wait. Go back to him. What did you say . Its going to be okay. I think teddy is going to be teddys name is good. Local disaster in my kitchen is all. Teddys name is good. Thank you, jeff. Hurricane at home. Thanks a lot. Were learning more about the president s conversations with bob woodward. Woodward detailed the conversations in his new book rage which is published by Simon Schuster. Theres a division of vie come cbs. Woodward told 60 minutes the president admitted he intentionally down played the severity of the coronavirus. And maintained his administration could not have done anything else to contain it. Nothing more could have been done. Does he remember what he told me back in february about its more deadly than the flu . I mean, it almost took my breath away that there was such certainty when he was absolutely wrong about the issue that defines the position of this country right now. Woodward also defended hid decision not to publish the president s comments earlier. He said he needed time to verify the february comment that the virus is more deadly than the flu. Well speak with bob woodward live tomorrow on cbs this morning. Democratic nominee joe biden leads the president in two more closely fought states according to our Battle Ground tracker poll. Conducted last week it shows former Vice President is nine points ahead in minnesota, a state that is a priority for the Trump Campaign. Biden leads by three points in arizona. The state has only gone to democrats one time since 1952. Overall, our poll finds that arizona voters are mostly uneasy about the state of our country right now. Only 10 say they feel secure about things at the home. Ed okeefe is covering campaign 2020 with 50 days to go before election day. Ed, good morning to you. Arizona is a very interesting case about 50 of the voters overall there according to our poll say they blame President Trump for the coronavirus situation there. Only a third give him credit for his response. So are his comments to bob woodward having an impact there . Well, i think overall what the woodward book continues to do is just sort of reinforce what many people had already believed. That is there are problems and there remain problems with how the federal government, with how the Trump Administration is responding to the virus. Woodward has provided a detailed public history of whats been going on over the last several months but there isnt anyones mind left to be changed. In arizona we find twothirds of people concerned about the coronavirus situation. The more concerned you are about it, the more likely you are to be voting for joe biden. This is a reminder that whether its in the grand canyon state or several others, if youre concerned about the coronavirus. If youre concerned youre going to get it or youre concerned about how the response has gone, youre more inclined to be voting for biden. That dynamic remains in this case and the president has done little to move the needle on that question. Its going to remain an underlying problem. The comment from the president that continues to echo, of course, is he likes to down play the virus. Speaking of down playing the virus, he was in Nevada Holding a rally indoors against the rules in that state, the governor, a democrat said it was reckless and selfish. His own cdc says what he did is in the highest risk category. Why is the president driving right into the problem zone here . Because he has no problem flouting the rules of his own federal agencies and loves taking on Popular Democratic governors. He continues to raise questions about mayors and governors democrats across the country and the way theyre leading cities and states. And frankly, because his supporters just dont seem to care. And hes okay with that. And so weve seen it. Whether it was last week in michigan, people show up. They may hold the mask to get in but they dont wear it. Thats a choice theyre making. And well see in the next few weeks if theres health and safety concern that comes from that. We hope there are not. Absolutely. His opponent joe biden took a break from campaigning on the friday, and had no Public Events over the weekend. I think that surprised some people. Whats he doing and whats his plan for the week ahead . Well, hell be giving a series of remarks in delaware about the wildfires out west and how they contribute to Climate Change. Thats one of the domestic issues that he remains concerned about, and has presented hefty proposals on it. Theres evidence he shifted left because of campaign season. He likes to remind people this is an issue hes been working on since he was a senator on several decades. On tuesday he heads to florida. Hell make two stops in Central Florida in tampa and orlando. There are warning signs when it comes to latinos. Theres no question hes likely to win the latino vote in the state but he needs the margin to be as high as possible to win the state overall. And then later in the week he heads to minnesota. Friday is the start of early voting. The president will be in minnesota as well on friday. Theyll cross paths again. And biden maybe getting help in florida where bloomberg announced a contribution to ads in that state. Late trials are resuming overseas after a pause. What this means for americans anxious to get their normal lives back. Im amo we have much more news ahead, including an inside look at the cias biggest surprises and failures, too. Author Chris Whipple will introduce his new book. And the multitalented Drew Barrymore joins us and she talks about her new daytime show and why shes not afraid to be herself on live tv. Oh, those are progressive cant protect you from becoming your parents, but we can protect your home and auto he the oxford vaccine is one of the leading vxs. We are joined from rhode island to discuss. Good to see you. Congratulations. It seems like you have a new position. Youre at brown. We know youre in high demand. Were glad youre here with us this morning. Good to see you. Good morning. Good morning. Thank you for having me on. It was put on hold i mean, its resuming overseas. Its still on hold here. Do you read anything to that about why its not why isnt it resumed here in this country . Yes. So thank you again for having me on. This is confusing. And one of the things thats not been clear is exactly what happened that caused the pause. And why things have resumed. And i think its really important for astrazeneca and the researchers to be transparent with the people about exactly what happened so we can all have more confidence in the process. Because we all are very nervous. Everybody wants a vaccine, but we want it to be safe, and it seems to be such a political hot potato. Why do you think its important theyre transparent, and why wouldnt they let us know the details . Yes. So first, absolutely, were all anxious for a vaccine. Im anxious for a vaccine. We all want one. But we need it to be safe and isk effective in under normal times all the stuff is not always disclosed. Is eventually disclosed to the fda. These are not normal times and therefore, given how much attention were all paying, i think its critical for the investigators to make all of this stuff completely public. Doctor, the ceo of pfizer who was on face the nation yesterday said theres more than a 60 chance the company will know by the end of october while its vaccine works. W what do you make of that and what could it mean . Ive been optimistic about a timeline to have vaccines found to be safe and effective this fall. We dont know what is motivating him to say that. I think one of the things called for is that the vaccine manufacturers should absolutely make their protocalls and research and statistics all public so we can understand whats motivating him to say that. Whats underlying about assessment . And without that, its difficult. Doctor, if that happens, if we get a successful vaccine by the fall, how long would it be before people get vaccinated . So if you think about it, were going to have to make hundreds of millions of doses. Some of those are being made. Even after we have got them made, its going to take many months to distribute them. I always say vaccines dont save lives. Vaccinations do. It will take us well into 2021 before a majority of americans get a vaccine. You know, the president said we have rounded a corner on this coronavirus. Tha thats one school of thought. Dr. Fauci says we may not be back to the normal until the end of next year. Whats your thoughts . I agree with dr. Fauci. We have not rounded a corner. I think were going to have very hard months ahead. I believe 2021 bewill be better and by spring or summer i think life will be meaningfully better in many parts of the country. I worry if we see the eye off the prize, we could see a lot of infections. What do you need to see to let people know its okay to take the vaccine . I want to see data, and i want to see it on both effectiveness and i want to see large enough number of people in the trials and a diverse enough number of people before i know that its safe for me, my family, my elderly parents. And what i would recommend to others. We have to see the evidence and data before we make a decision about whether its safe and effective. All right. Thank you. Good to have you here today. Thank you. Ahead, we celebrate this weeks acm awards by revealing one of the winners two days early. They gave us the inside scoop. Youre watching cbs this morning. Well be right back. Lame knees. A new book pulls back the curtain on the cia. And secretive directors. Author Chris Whipple spoke to almost every living director for his book the spy masters how the cia directors shape history and the future. Purchased by scribner, an imprint of Simon Schuster which is a division of viacomcbs. Chris whipple. Good morning. Thanks for being with us. Good to be with you. What did you learn in all of your conversations, and i have to say i was incredibly envious of the ability to talk to all these really interesting people and what theyve learned over the years. What did you learn about the importance of the relationship between the cia director and the president of the United States . The first thing i learned is that when you know, when you go back through the history of these directors and interview almost every living cia director, you discover that its almost impossible to overstate the significance of the position. I mean, the cia director is the person we depend on to prevent another 9 11 or lethal pandemic. Its also this almost impossible balancing act for for the director. You have to tell the president hard truths, and at the same time, you have to have his ear. So the cia director commands an army of analysts, covert operatives, paramilitary warriors, and lethal drones, but if he doesnt have the ear of the president , the whole enterprise is for naught. Thats difficult in the best of times. It may be almost impossible with this president. You say that President Trump ignoring warnings of a pandemic was worse than president bushs refusal to listen to warnings ahead of 9 11. Why do you say that . Look at the results, look at the numbers. Look at the catastrophe that were dealing with right now. That is a result of a president who ignored warnings that were in his president ial brief throughout january. And in my book, i have a chapter on President Trump and his two directors. Mo and je mike pompeo and gina haspel. And an epilogue of what he knew and when he knew it and what the intelligence told him. There was almost a total breakdown of the president ial briefing process in january where he was having literally one verbal briefing a week. Yeah. If you talk to any previous president , theyll tell you thats thats almost a dereliction of duty. Chris, the president has said that the cia told him the viral was not a big deal. Thats not what you heard. Well, you know no. It was interesting because he said on fox news, in effect he threw his intelligence briefer under the bus saying she downplayed the virus. I think thats a case where a competent cia director would come to the briefers defense or brief reporters on whether or not she did in fact warn him about the coronavirus. That statement by trump was wrong on so many levels. And it points to one of the disappointments about the current director, gina haspel, who came in with really high hopes. She is a fascinating character, a mystery woman who flies under the radar, is given no interviews. But i have some stories about her when she was at the black the infamous cia black site in thailand where she struck up an interesting rapport with one of the key al qaeda terrorists. Shes a fascinating story. Chris, Tony Dokoupil here. Since you mentioned the president through an analyst threw an analyst under the bus it brings to mind other clashes in public with the intelligence communities. What impact do those clashes have on the work of the cia . Well, the cia is pretty good at keeping its head down and ignoring who the president may be at any given time in the white house. But theres no question about it. This has been a broken marriage from day one. You remember when the president went to langley and stood in front of the most Hallowed Ground at cia headquarters, the memorial wall, and he bragged about the size of his inauguration and barely acknowledged the fallen cia officers. Its been pretty rough ever since. But its not the first time that a president has thought that the cia was a deep state full of liberal enemies who were out to bring him down. Thats what Richard Nixon thought about dick hels in the 1960s. As we pointed out, you spoke to every living director except mike pompeo and gina haspel, who were cia directors under President Trump. Thanks so much for being with us. The spy masters goes on sale tomorrow. And you can hear Chris Whipple talk more with cbs news chief justice and Homeland Security correspondent jeff pegues on todays cbs this morning podcast. That will be an interesting chat. Yes, i would love that a yellow mic we did we did the show in yellow. Most of us know you as an actress which means you have a script, or youre a producer, following words on paper. Now that youre live, you really are opening yourself up in a way that you havent before. Are you ready for that . Are you ready for people to see Drew Barrymore with no script . Yes. Is it scary to you . Im relieved which is such an underestimated emotion. There should be more cards in the hallmark aisle. Youre relieved, how wonderful is that . I like that. Im relieved that im at this point in my life. I think it was probably good for me to go to work and put myself into characters. But i think where im at in my personal life right now, im a mom to two kids, ive been able to recognize that im capable of change even if it took a long time and it was messy getting there. I like what you said about the messiness of life. Look at your life, Drew Barrymore. We remember you as girdy from et. Love that little girl. You went through the wildchild phase. You were considered a rebel. You posed for playboy. Youve been married a couple of times. Yep. Youve had a very, very, very full life. And so i look at you now, the mother two of girls, mother of two girls, who taught you how to be a mother when you look at the background that youve had and all the things that youve done . You always ask the best questions. Im curious, though, because you have. When i was a hedonist and enjoying all of my growing up too fast or then being an adult trying to reclaim a childhood, start businesses, kind of have even more fun in a different way, all the Little Things ive gone through, ive never followed messy people. What do you mean . I never ask advice, live my life by work with or am side by side with anyone who isnt exactly what i would like to be when i grow up. Im wondering your lessons to your daughters. What do you tell them . Do they know who their mother is . Very much so. Yeah. They do . Yeah. And they want to be a part of it all. But im very protective. Im a total doberman. I would like you to be, you know, a little bit more of a grownup before you dive into being a public person or social media or all that stuff. And like, they come to my work, they love playing in the commercial i did when im not talking to myself on johnny carson. They stood in and did the lines with me. I never want them to feel like, oh, moms work is she doesnt want that for me. No. Come, play. But i want you to be kids, i want you to be protected. I want you at 13 and 14 to think my mother protected me. She built this foundation for me that is very strong and firm and loving. What do you want us to feel after watching your show . After watching whats the name of it again . I know. I never want to say it. Elaine borrow brooks who brought me into the enterprise who what do you mean you dont want to say it . Ill never call it my show. Nope. Whose show is it . Ours. Okay. All right. I like that. I want to approach it a little bit more cinematically. I want to be a storyteller. I would like each show to have a bit of an arc. I would like it to end and feel the aw, its over, im glad its on tap for me again tomorrow. What qualifies you, Drew Barrymore, hov is your own talk show at this time . You are ready because what . My daughter asked me the meaning of life the other day. Frankie. And shes 6, she loves graveyards, and shes really macabre and soulful. I said, hang on, let me try and think of the answer.
