I just want to say, i feel great about it. Why should we Pay Attention to what theyre saying if none of what theyre saying tonight is about whats happening in america right now . Why should we watch their reality show if it doesnt reflect our reality . Why subject ourselves to their lies that stick to your soul like hot tar . Lies like donald trump cares whether you live or die. You see, this week, the c. D. C. Completely reversed their testing guidelines to say people without symptoms may not need to be tested, even if theyve been in close contact with someone known to have the virus. That is surprising. Because we have been repeatedly warned that 40 of infections are asymptomatic. And 50 of transmissions occur before the symptoms. Ignoring something doesnt make it go away. If it did, why are there still valpak coupons . Who on earth thinks not testing is a good idea . If we did half the testing, wed have half the cases. Last night, there was yet another tragedy in kenosha, wisconsin. All this week, there have been demonstrations protesting the shooting of jacob blake by police on sunday. Theres been fireworks. Theres been tear gas. Theres been fires. But yesterday, violence escalated when two people were killed and one injured after a vigilante fired multiple rounds into a crowd of protesters. So much for a wellregulated militia. Cell phone video shows the killer with a semiautomatic rifle opening fire on a group of people. The man with the gun is then seen walking with his hands up toward responding police officers, who drive past him. He had his hands up, and the police told him to get out of there, even though everyone was yelling that he was the shooter. Evidently, the Kenosha Police motto is to observe and neglect. Well, today, Illinois Police arrested the suspected shooter, and he has now been charge and identified as a 17yearold illinois resident. And we dont know a lot more than, that other than two things this person thought they were a member of the militia. And they thought there was such a thing as a militia. There isnt. Theres cops who can legally carry guns and arrest you. And then there are yahoos who can get strapped with an ar15, buy some cameo from an army surplus store, then go role play the fear fantasy thats been fed to them every night of the last four years. I give s which of these conventions those yahoos are watching. Its the one making a hero out of tweedle dee and tweedle gun. Assuming it was on tonight. Again, i did not watch. Now for everyone who thinks the black lives matter protests are not necessary, or defunding or fundamentally restructuring the police is not necessary. Consider this the Kenosha Police seemed pretty cozy with this fantasy militia league. Before the shooting, a local Group Calling themselves the kenosha guard organized a Facebook Event encouraging armed civilians to take to the streets. The group put up this Facebook Post addressed to kenoshas police chief. As you know, i am the commander of the kenosha guard, a local militia. We are organizing and have about 3,000 r. S. V. Ps. Our effort has made the National Media i ask that you do not have your officers tell us to go home under threat of arrest as you have in the past. We are will to talk to k. P. D. And open a discussion. It is evident that no matter how many officers, deputies and other Law Enforcement officers that there are, you will still be outnumbered. When asked about the incident, the Kenosha Police chief says protesters wouldnt have been shot by armed teen if they werent illegally out past curfew. That is insane. Or at least on them, because earlier today, to protest what has happened in kenosha and all around the United States, the Milwaukee Bucks boycotted game five of the n. B. A. Playoff series. Well, somebody had to show some leadership. And the bucks stopped here. And this was a real shock. If you tuned in to watch the game, you just saw an empty court with a few referees on it. And keep in mind, this is a playoff game. It could be the pinnacle of many of these athletes careers. Is there a most valuable not player award . Because theres some competition today. The bucks were soon followed by the rest of the league, and now all of todays n. B. A. Games have been postponed. And it wasnt just the players taking a stand. On inside the n. B. A. This happened i think the biggest thing now is to kind of, as a black man, as a former player, i think its best for me to support the players and just not be here tonight. And figure out what happens after that. I just dont feel equipped to be here. Stephen wow. That is a mic drop. Were the ones getting killed. Were the ones getting shot. Were the ones that were denied to live in certain communities. Weve been hung. Weve been shot. And. All you do is keep hearing of fear. Its. Quite a contrast to what we did last week, just from the start with the roll call to see the beautiful diversity of america, the pride of place that people had in their states across the country. So id rather think in a more positive way, not to dwell on them, but to think in a more forward way. Stephen im happy im happy to leave the discussion of the r. N. C. , but i have to ask you one question. This is a rumor thats going around at the r. N. C. Is Joe Biden A Trojan horse, and youre inside pulling all the levers . Because theyve painted a picture. laughs to their peril, they underestimate joe biden. Hes going to be a great president of the United States. He has a vision for our country, which is very positive, respectful of the dignity and worth of every person. He has knowledge of the issues, which is something that they are also lacking, knowledge and judgment. He always thinks in a strategic way about how to get things done. Ive seen him in action in terms of his vice presidency, passing the Affordable Care act, enforcing the recovery act, and, again, all of these things vision, knowledge, judgment, Strategic Thinking are important. But whats really important is whats in his heart and his authenticity and his connection and his empathy for the American People is something that they probably wouldnt even recognize, could never identify with, and are very different from joe biden on. So they will say what they will say. But we do what we will do. As i said, we dont agonize. We organize, and we must organize to make sure that he is the next president of the United States. Stephen now, in your speech, you talked about the centennial of the 19th amendment which, of course, giving the women the right to vote. Today is the anniversary of it actually being added to the constitution. As the first female speaker of the house, or just as an american woman, what does this day mean to you . It means a great. Thats why im wearing purpl actually, out my window, i see the Kennedy Center which is lit up in purple and yellow in honor of this important day. And 100 years ago, when it happened, stephen, they said the headline said, women given the right to vote. Well, women werent given anything. They worked. They struggled. They fought. They marched. They starved. They were starved and they won the right to vote. It took 75 years at least. And we stand on their shoulders right now observing the 100thvey exciting that theres a woman speaker of the house. I think its pretty exciting that we have over 100 women in the house of representatives 90 105, 90 of them democrats because we made that decision, and its exciting that we have a woman nominated for Vice President of the United States who will most likely be i feel quite certain the Vice President of the United States. Were observing it stephen i still have i still have a little you know flashbacks to 2016 when everybody gets too confident. We dont take anything for granted, im with you all the way. Thats why assume nothing. Stephen assume nothing, okay. Heres one of the reasons why the 100th anniversary actually gives me some hope for our country, however bad things may be at any given time. And certainly there are a lot of crises the country is facing right now, is that my mom was born three days after women could vote the first time, in november 2 of 1920 was the federal election that year, and she was born three days later. And and so in the essentially, in the lifetime of my mother, women voting was perfectly normal. When right before that, it was unthinkable to so many people. Within one generation, something that can seem never achievable can be taken as a natural given of the american experience. What are the things that you think right now that we think of as unachievable, or many people do, that that we have a chance of making acceptable and normal within American Society and politics in this next generation . Lets go back to your mom first for a moment, how wonderful that she was blessed to be born at a time when women achieved the right to vote. But that doesnt mean it was over. We still have work to do. We stand on the shoulders of these women who were so courageous. But whether it was seneca falls or selma or stonewall, we still have heroes who worked through all of that and have shown us a path forward. So we want to we dont doubt our elections will be free and fair, that they wont be manipulated or question the veracity of or scare people with intimidation of who is going to be showing up at the polls to watch whos voting. So we have work to do to protect the vote. So, again, when we win, some of the things that may have seen inevitable to some, to us, seemed inevitable, but to others seemed inconceivable, we want to shorten the distance between the inevitable and the conceivable. For example, we had the equality act to remove all discrimination against l. G. B. T. Q. Members of society. And just think back, what has happened. We have Marriage Equality now. Thats a giant step forward. But we still have. Challenges ahead that legislation can take care of. Stephen madam speaker, i have to take a quick commercial break. So that provoked a reaction, and then, this person with a gun, a semiautomatic, i understand, went and killed two people, injured another, and what is the responsibility that the president needs to feel about what encouragement or whatever the word is, that he may have given, the Comfort Level for someone to do such a thing and be so brazen about it . He thought he was joining a militia. What militia . Stephen that is that is one of the strangest things about it, is the tacit approval of militias and unidentified and undeputized people with military weapons on our streets that the republicans have given and celebrated in many ways. But i want to ask you about, in june, the house passed the George Floyd Justice in policing act. What did that hope to do . And why does it seem like nothing has changed in the last three months . Well, whats very sad about it is theres something weve never seen before. All over the world people turned out and said things we must have change. We must have change about how people are respected. We must have change about police brutality. And so our bill, the geoge Floyd Justice in policing act, is one that strives to make some elements nationalize certain elements choke holds, all of those things. We have a difference of opinion with the senate on this. They didnt want to eliminate choke some choke holds maybe not other choke holds. What . No, none. What we hope to accomplish with it and its different provisions was very reasonable. It got to the point. It was balanced. It weighed equities, but that still couldnt make it through the republican senate. Shame on them. They are going to have to answer for that. Theyre going to have to answer for that. And, again, ignoring the will of the people in such large numbers that we have never seen before, a whole other generation of people saying, no, this cannot go forward. And, again, its the understand this if donald trump said its okay, ill sign it. Mitch mcconnell would bring it up. Stephen i have no doubt.
