Longterm Economic Trends that covid19 has only made worse. Correspondent Jill Schlesinger will report our cover story. Reporter coronavirus has put millions of people out of work and left millions more without even enough to eat. Meanwhile, billionaires Bank Accounts grow fatter. The pandemic has only laid bare inequities that have existed in our country for a long time. Now the question is what do we do. Reporter covid19 affects the debate over wealth and income inequity ahead on sunday. Pauley paris hilton is a celebrity whos name is known around the world, but the real person has largely been hidden from view, until now. Shell talk with tracy smith. Reporter just when you thought you had heard all there was to hear about paris hilton, she makes a movie about a time in her life she says was too dark to even tell her parents about. Why not tell them when you got out . I didnt think they would believe me. Because even talking about it now and hearing myself talk about it, it sounds impossible to believe. Reporter paris hilton finds her voice, later on sunday morning. Pauley the grass is always greener, thousands of us take that very seriously, particularly, Martha Teichner tells us, now. Reporter here is another thing americans are obsessing over during the coronavirus lockdown their lawns. Your neighbors say they see you out here at midnight with a headlamp on, mowing. Yeah, ive been known to do that a time or two. They definitely think im nuts. Reporter ahead this sunday morning, long care. This covid summers alternative to baking sourdough bread. Drops in on legendary baseball announcer vin scully. And lesley stahl is in conversation with reed hastings. And david martin talks we form f. B. I. Agent peter strzok. And jim axelrod puzzles over the challenge of smiling while wearing a mask. Plus Steve Hartman, a glance back at this summer like none other, and more. Its sunday morning, september 6, 2020, and well be back in a moment. It was just a get together with friends. No big deal. Everybody felt fine. But now im super sick. Everyone is sick. I just wish we had been more careful. It would have been easier than this. So wear a mask. Do what you can outside. Stay six feet apart. Because some things you just cant take back. Do your part to lower the risk. Pauley admit it, if you have a lawn, you may spend part of this Holiday Weekend making sure your grass is always greener. If so, Martha Teichner tells us youre in good company. Reporter youre not seeing things. Its exactly the same. Its exactly the same. [laughter] just like if you were in your backyard. Reporter well, now. Teri and michaels lawn is on the 24th floor roof of a chicago highrise. Thats Lake Michigan way down there. Chances are the only resemblance their lawn has to yours is this. We get a lot of dandelions. I dont know how they get up here. Reporter the lawn, as well as the wilkes baronial 8,000 square foot penthouse apartment could be had for a mere 24. 5 million. Theyre for sale. What is it with americans and their lawns . According to a 2005 nasa study, weve planted Something Like 40 million acres of grass. We spend 40 billion a year on tending it. So no surprise, coronavirus has made americans lawncare crazy. You could argue that the perfect lawn is the perfect coping mechanism in a world that has been turned upside down. Reporter historian Ted Steinberg is the author of american agreed the obsessive quest for the perfect lawn. His own lane in shaker heights, ohio, is not perfect. Reporter once upon a time, only landed gentry with legends of servants in the 18th century had lawns. It wasnt until after world war ii that ordinary, middleclass americans found themselves in possession of, and subsequently possessed by, their own lawns. When they moved to brand new suburbs. It was the cold war. America had an enemy the soviet union. Americans had an enemy, too weeds. Rallying those wed warriors it kills dandelions reporter the scots company ran advertising compaigns that linked peoples personal identity to the kind of landscape they had around their homes. Reporter with annual sales already topping 3 billion, scots is experiencing a bonanza year. Sales of its lawn and garden products this season up 24 . So the pandemic is creating new lawn fanatics . It is creating a segment of new users or participants who are learning how easy it is to maintain a lawn. Reporter is that cor prate speak for we hope so. Mark slavens is research and development for scots miraclegro. He has the funny dance that i think the lawn likes. Reporter and scots has learned that making fun of itself and its customers is great advertising. Im really big on skin on skin with lawns. Reporter we wanted to meet a real lawn nut and see how coronavirus had affected his obsession. I was mowing, and i noticed, huh, there are 13 stripes from the road to the garden bed here. And i thought, wow, i could probably put a flag right there. Reporter so we went to visit zac williams in upstate new york, and he has been mowing the American Flag into his lawn for the 4th of july the past two summers. I knew it was cool, so i thought maybe this could go viral, and it did. Last winter was kind of rough for me. I kept looking forward to summer and spring so i could get back on the lawn. Reporter how much does zac williams love his grass . This year i cut these plugs out and planted them in some pots and thought they would be great christmas gifts, too. Reporter when you see all of these machines lined up on your lawn, what happens inside . Some people are into sports cars, not zac. The one that really gets me excited is the one by you, martha, a john deeres mower. And i want to get on this orange mower and full throttle rip it down the lawn. Reporter top speed . 8 miles an hour. Last fall williams decided to turn his passion into a sideline business, cutting and caring for other peoples lawns at night and on weekends. Good thing he did, thanks to covid19 his day job in the travel industry, gone. Being able to cut the lawn into those nice patterns, which i like to do, does give me some order and sense of calm right now. Reporter in a world suddenly all cockeyed, for zac williams there is nothing quite like straight stripes. You can look at it and it just makes you feel you can look at it and it just makes you feel good. Jardiance can reduce the risk of cardiovascular death for adults who also have known Heart Disease. Stay asleep. Pauley millions of americans, through no fault of their own, are paying the price this Labor Day Holiday for americas worsening economic inequality. Here is Jill Schlesinger. My name is tiana caldwell. Im a. J. Caldwell. Reporter before the pan pandemic struck, the Caldwell Family of kansas city was just making ends meet. Derrick was working as an electrician, and tianna was Training Office workers, and a. J. Was looking forward to playing football after school. If you go back to the beginning of march, were you busy . Was it slow . It was busy, and then everybody just stopped. Reporter you might say covid19 infected the familys finances. Jobs dried up, supposing a stark reality they had no safety net. Reporter were you able to save any money before the pandemic hit . No. Reporter so just paycheck to paycheck, right . Yeah. Yeah. Reporter even before the coronavirus, nerly four out of 10 American Adults said they would have difficulty covering a 400 unexpected expense. We got help from family. We got help from friends. Reporter the caldwells also got help from casey tenant, a housing Rights Organization founded by tarra. The pandemic laid bare inequities that have been in our country for a long time. Reporter the Census Bureau found income and inequality twothirds of the total wealth is owned by the richest 5 . At the same time, more than 38 million americans are living in poverty, and it is projected that up to 54 Million People might not have enough to eat this year. We have a methodology that what is good for wall street is good for main street, but that really has never been true. Reporter economic inequality is the subject of a new documentary, based on the surprise bestseller by tom piketty. He has surveyed centuries of economic upheaval. In the 18th century, money married money and publicly it is a death sentence. [inaudible] it is more sustainable. Reporter more than 29 Million People are now collecting unemployment benefits. While at the top end of the economic ladder, in the first three months of the pandemic the net worth of the more than 600 billionaires in the u. S. Grew by 20 . Jeff bezos, the owner of amazon, saw his net worth increase by 43 . 8 billion in the first months of the pandemic. Those who have the least advantages, the least economic opportunities, are going to bear the largest burden of any kind of downturn, whether it be an economic downturn or a Public Health crisis. Reporter Valerie Wilson is a director at the liberal economic institute. She sees not only an economic divide by a racial divide. Covid19 has magnified these Racial Disparities we have known about f decades because of the persistence of many of these disparities, we can almost predict how any crisis is going to go. Reporter for example, black households have just 10 of the net worth of white households. For hispanic households, the figure is just 12 . The combination of covid19 and it being such a universal problem, not only in this country but around the world, has really challenged us to sort of question the idea of whether or not we really are all in this together. Reporter but not everyone sees income and wealth disparity as negative trends. At the end of the day, capitalism is just trying to maximize, optimize, grow everything as fast as it possibly can. Thats how people get rich. Reporter edward connor, a scholar the conservative American Enterprise institute has written about the upside of inequality. He argues forgiving entrepreneurs incentives to create the next google or apple or amazon, looking to free markets to help boost incomes. The more prosperous the economy, the richer the bottom 20 . Theortheyre depending on government distribution or their income, and we get it from increasing the overall prosperity of the economy. And the best measure of that is not just bezos salary. Reporter Valerie Wilson isnt buying it. In this country, we have this idea about the American Dream and the virtues of capitalism, if you work hard, you get an education, you put in your time, you take risks, then youre able to climb the economic ladder. But i think it is clear that we get this billionaire super class, and those opportunities are not so evenly distributed. And, in fact, the economic gains that we all contribute to are increasingly being shared by only a few. Reporter so will the coronavirus change our economic past . Tom piketty believes it could go either way. Do you believe that the pandemic presents an opportunity here . What we see from history, from crises, like pandemic, sometimes a necessity, unfortunately, it changes the political atmosphere, but after crises, it can get better. And it can be a political monster, as weve seen. Reporter as covid19 continues to rage across the country, the initial 2. 2 trillion in government stimulus money has run out, and congress and the white house dont appear close to agreeing on a more substantial deal. And also a concern the patchwork of state and federal moratoriums on evictions wont be enough to keep renters from sliding into homelessness. Many people got sick and died because of insecure housing situations. That number will go over time as people face eviction. And it is inexcusable. We live in the richest country in the world and we can and must guarantee that everyone who has a home. Reporter it wont happen overnight, but where do we go from here . The thing is, it could happen overnight. When we need to print a trillion dollars and get it out to people and their Bank Accounts, we can do it. It has given me lot of hope. Reporter and tianna also has hope that some day when we say were all in this together, well mean it. We should be helping each other. If one of us is not okay, none of us is okay. A Raymond James Financial Advisor gets to know you, your passions, and the way you help others. So you can live your life. Thats life well planned. Pauley summer is almost over, but all across america, were still playing ball. Say those two words, and it is hard not to think about one of the legends of the game. Our lee cowan caught up with announcer vin scully. It is time for dodgers baseball. Reporter the last time we met up with hall of fame broadcaster vin scully, it was a warm summer night at dodgers stadium in los angeles. Here is my office. Reporter not a bad view. It was eight years ago, but the privilege of going to a ballpark in person feels like a century ago, doesnt it . Baseball in 2020is the season of cardboard cutouts and piped in fan noise. Scully thought he had seen everything. Balls out of the park, yes, but fans out of the park, too . Thanks, covid. Ive spent my life in sports, and it has just about shut it down. Fernandez has hit the nohitter. If you have a so sombrero, throw it to the side. Reporter he wasnt just the voice of the dodgers. High fly ball into right field. She is gone [applause and cheering] reporter scully was, in his heart, baseball storyteller. In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened. [applause and cheering] reporter after 67 seasons, the redhead who started with the brooklyn dodgers at 23 retired in 2016, just shy of his 89th birthday. Ive needed you far more than you needed me. [applause and cheering] in my heart, in my mind, it was enough. And ive never had one misgiving about the fact, you know, i should have waited one more year. Reporter no regrets . Not even one. Uhuh. Reporter is it strange watching as a fan . I dont watch it critically. Im not listening really to what the announcers say. Are they trying to steal my stuff . I have none of that. Reporter nobody could steal scullys stuff, but they can now collect some of it. Over the years, hes accumulated some of the games crown jewels, world series trophies and rings, president ial autographs and more awards than places to put them. The awards are gratefully received, but theyre only for the moment. Reporter so he has decided to sell some of those monumental moments through hunt auctions in philadelphia. He wants the proceeds, which could be pretty substantial, to go to his five kids, 16 grand kids, and to charity. Was there anything hard to give up . You know, i must be very coldhearted because there isnt one thing that i really felt i hated to give up, not one. Reporter not even this a scrap of paper scully got as a boy, hanging around the upper right field deck at the polo grounds in new york. And lo and behold, there was babe ruth. And he reached into his pocket and he took out what looked like 50, 100 business cards, and on each card was his signature, babe ruth. Isnt that amazing . It somehow showed up when we started digging. Reporter did you forget you had it . I didnt forget, but i wasnt quite sure where it was. Reporter some items he has had for most of his career, lying this battered leather binder. You took this to every game . Every game. I couldnt live without this. Reporter still taped inside are yellowed notes to himself. Like this poem he would read whenever he saw a toddler in the stands. A little, tiny kid, and in here i had, oh, the thumb suckers thumb may look wrinkled and wet and withers and white as snow, but the taste of the thumb is the sweetest taste yet as only we thumb suckers know. Reporter before we left, we noticed his 1988 world series ring. Surely that hell keep, we thought, but, no. Ive worn it every day, almost every hour of every day, but it will go. Reporter vin vin scully is not out of the game. In fact, he just twitter. Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good afternoon to you. Reporter to continue talking about great moments of baseball. He has seen enough of them to know that seball keeps going. Time, however, stops for no one. I mean, im 92. Even if i live to be 100, thats only a couple of years from now. Where i am is where i belong, quiet, peaceful, and at home, far from the mad crowd. Unbelievable [applause and cheering] with specialized expertise. A history of success through every economic climate. And proven strategies rooted in data and analytics. Giving you more control. Clarity. And confidence. For now and whatevers next Northern Trust wealth management. Because i work with a lot. Of dust and dirt. Just washing. The dirt and the grime off. And just bringing you. Back. To you. You see the glow . Thats a dove bar. Dove cleans effectively, cares beautifully. You see the glow . Thats a dove bar. Mucinex cold flu allinone. Fights. Oh no. Nonono. Did you really need the caps lock . Mucinex cold and flu allinone. Pauley how has america been spending this summer of 2020 . Take a look. We have snapshots. Pauley as always, we thank you for watching sunday morning. But it is what you watch the rest of the time that is on the mind of reed hastings. Lesley stahl of 60 minutes chats with the man behind netflix. Reporter the New York Times once described the netflix lobby as the hottest see and be seen spot in hollywood. That was last year. This is now. It is supposed to be full of people cheering and talking and now it is empty. Reporter reed hastings, the cofounder and coc. E. O. Of netflix showed us the video wall promoting new netflix shows, surrounded by lots and lots of empty chairs. We will be back. Were going to get that vaccine, and then that lobby will be pumping again. Reporter i know why youre so optimistic. Because like toilet paper and lysol, youre one of the few companies who have really thrived in this pandemic. People love entertainment, whether that is war time, peace time, covid. Reporter yeah, but youre avoiding my question, which is youre doing extremely well. Your subscription numbers have what . Were off to a faster start in growth than any year in our history. Roughly from 160 million to 190 million. Reporter internationally, too . All around the world, covid, unfortunately, is everywhere, and luckily netflix is, too. Reporter the growth of netflix has been expedential over the last few years, now the service is available in 190 countries. And its financial growth has been a wow also. When the company went public in 2002, the stock price was 15 a share. During the pandemic, netflix has been trading around 500. If you spend chasing a big audience, you bet get better get one. Reporter ted sarandos joined us up on the roof, social distancing. You created this monster. Bingewatching is so addictive, it has changed our habits. Just one more. Just one more. Reporter they dont watch cbs as much. People say it has ruined their sex lives. Then theyre watching the wrong thing laughing . Reporter i did a story on netflix in 2006 an age ago. All d. V. D reporter all d. V. D. You had the little red envelopes flying around the country. We still have them. Reporter one the things you told us, you realized you were not c. E. O. Material. You said you were not a good c. E. O. And you needed to turn that over to somebody else. I definitely struggled at c. E. O. Reporter are you c. E. O. Material now . Beginning to be. Aspiring to be. Reporter but do you think it is kind of humorous that a good has written a book about how to manage a company . The book is called no rules rules. It gives netflix employees an unusual amount of freedom and responsibility, offering unlimited vacation time, and paying top of the market salaries, but in exchange. Whats the keeper test, though . And i say that because everything isnt funny and wonderful here. I mean, it is tough. We run like a professional sports team. Were trying to get the best players on the field at all times. If someone was leaving to go to another company, would we work really hard to keep them at netflix . And if so, then they pass the keeper test. If not, we give them a very generous severance package and we let them go. Reporter well, sometimes they dont want to go, but the keeper test says it is not worth keeping them, and therefore you have a reputation, this company, of being ruthless. Some people call it the hung gaarhunger games company. It is not like the hunger games. This is a total cooperation. But if youre going to win the world cup of entertainment, youve got to have the best players on the field at all time. There is no question it is a tough place. It is not for everyone. Reporter in a tough netflix way, honest is the best policy, no matter what. You say you introduced this idea of radical candor because of marriage counseling you went through. That was a long time ago, and now weve been married 29 years. But early in our marriage, we had this great marriage counselor who got me to see i was lying a lot. I was saying family is the most important thing, and then i would stay at work late. So it helped so much for him to really show me i wasnt being that honest, and it helped to live more in balance. Reporter what is live 360. Well typically had a dinner or lunch and everybody goes around and gives each other feedback, how they could be more affective professionally. Reporter so do you get feedback or criticism, you . All the time. Being too glib on not really listening. Or being too positive and polyanish and not seeing the problems. Reporter hastings reports on what was said about him in one of those sessions. This one said youre too aggressive, youre overconfident, and youre twtoo dismissive when other people have ideas. Do you recognize yourself . Yes. And i try to mitigate it. You cant really change your nature. Reporter ted sarandos joined netflix over 20 years ago. He says hastings vision is what sold him on the company. Reed described netflix in 1999 almost exactly how it is now. Why that seems insane is that at the time, the internet was so slow, if someone emailed you a video clip, it would take days to open up and watch. And reed was so Crystal Clear about where this was heading. Im not sure that i thought he was right, but his sense of clarity about it it was incredible. Reporter hastings guided netflix from four major shifts from renting d. V. D. S to streaming other peoples shows to producing its own shows to going global. This year netflix got more oscar and emmy nominations than any other studio, and thats in large part thanks to sarandos. My job was to pick everything on netflix. He picked nearly 400 shows last year, and every one of them, be it the crown, or its royal cousin, tiger king, started with a pitch. We probably hear about 100 a day. Reporter you have 100 pitches a day . Yeah, thats from television, global, and documentaries. Te reporter the first pitch sarandos heard and the first show netflix produced itself in 2013 was house of cards. Tell us why you even wanted house of cards. What did you see . It was about greed and power and sex and all the makings of great television. Is this your subtle way of saying im out of shape. No. It is my way of saying you could be in better shape. That sounds condescending and passive aggressive. Reporter house of cards starred robin wright and kevin spacey. How did you get them . The paycheck. Reporter he paid 100 million for the first two seasons of house of cards. Were making every show in the world. Reporter did you ever see the saturday night live skit where youre just throwing money out there and your buying anything . [laughter] this show is about a girl named jimmy yes. Here is money. Go and make it. South park did it, too. Netflix agreement, who am i speaking with . Reporter thats you . Im assuming. They didnt call me by name, but im assuming. Reporter he spent 15billion on programming last year. Yeah, but across the world, its not so much. Reporter but youre paying some stars 30 million, 40 million. Yeah. Reporter the pressure on the other studios to match what youve done is intense. How much is will smith getting these days . 50 million . I cant say. Reporter netflix will likely pay will smith 30 million to star in the sequel, bright. This summer netflix moved 100 million of its assets to blackowned banks, and they gave 20 million of their own money to historically black colleges. Hastings has pledged to give away the majority of his wealth to worthy causes. So ted is your chief in charge of content, and then you make him coc. E. O. People are wondering whether this is your first step out the door. Well, eventually. Eventually were all going to die. Reporter are they going to drag you out by your feet . Well see. Your feet . Well see. [laughter] matoid arthritis. Ive always been the ringleader had a zest for life. And what my doctor said surprised me. She said my joint pain could mean permanent joint damage. Another lifechanging technology from abbott. So you dont wait for life. You live it. Pauley former f. B. I. Special agent peter strzok was fired over Text Messages critical of President Trump. Now he is writing about his controversial role in the russia investigation and answering questions from National Security correspondent david martin. Nobody had any joy in doing this. Nobody was seeking to try and open that case. Reporter peter strzok is the f. B. I. Agent who started it all, opening the investigation into Donald Trumps campaign three months before the 2016 president ial election. Youre the guy who writes the official document that opens the investigation . I do. Reporter inspired by mick jagger of all people, he code named the investigation. Reporter crossfire hurricane. Jumin jack flash was running through my mind, and mick jagger singing, i was born in a crossfire hurricane. Reporter attorneygeneral william barr said it was based on a very thin slender reed. Strzok describes exactly what that reed was. George papadopoulos at the time was a very young Foreign Policy advisor to the Trump Campaign. Reporter in may 2016, just as trump was emerging as the unlikely republican frontrunner President Trump thank you, everybody. Reporter papadopoulos was in london having drinks with some australian diplomats. Papadopoulos told them somebody on the Trump Campaign had received an offer that said the russians had material and it would be damaging to Hillary Clinton and to obama, and they offered to coordinate the release of that information in a way that would help the Trump Campaign. Reporter the australians didnt make much of it until trump made this appeal about Hillary Clintons emails. President trump russia, if youre listening, i hope youre able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. Reporter those australian diplomats heard that and contacted the f. B. I. When they saw that statement by trump, that triggered the memory of the conversation they had with papadopoulos. Reporter so donald trump, with his own words, brought this investigation down on himself . According to what the Foreign Government told us, yes. Reporter give me the theory of the case, when you opened this investigation. Russia had offered to assist electing someone to be president of the united states. From an intelligence perspective, i cant think of anything more significant. Reporter strzok identified four suspects in the Trump Campaign papadopoulos, carter page, Paul Manafort and michael flynn, based on their contacts with russian officials. Thats flynn, a retired lieutenant general, who would become President Trumps first National Security advisor, seated next to Vladimir Putin at a 2015 dinner in moscow. But the f. B. I. Turned up nothing incriminating on him. So were you ready to close your investigation of flynn . We were. Reporter that obviously didnt happen. What changed . He had a bunch of phone calls and contact with the Russian Ambassador to the united states. Reporter before the Trump Administration had assumed power, flynn called ambassador sergey kislyak. What is wrong with that . I think what makes a problem is when you look at the content and nature of the things that flynn tells the ambassador. Reporter flynn asked kislyak not to retaliation for russian sanctions. In which flynn interfered with Foreign Policy was recorded by u. S. Intelligence. So instead of closing the case, strzok sat down to question flynn. The strangest thing happened and it was very clear he wasnt telling the truth, and we repeatedly trying to get him to that, by offering phrases, the exact same things he said in the conversations with the ambassador. Reporter flynn knew his conversations with the Russian Ambassador would be monitored. So it is the damndest thing. He knew you knew but he still denied it . I cant explain it. It sounds like the Old Washington story, the coverup is worse than the deed itself . And to this day, i dont think we yet know the true story of what was behind general flynns statements to us. Reporter flynn implicatepledguilty to lying, bw the Justice Department has moved to dismiss the charges because attorney barr said the f. B. I. Kept the case open just so strokstrzok could catch flynn in a lie. They kept it open for the purpose to lay a perjury charge for flynn. Reporter Paul Manafort served as Trumps Campaign chairman. According to a new report, manafort was a grave counterintelligence threat, who sought to secretly share with the russian Intelligence Officer sensitive Campaign Polling data. If it is their polls, isnt it theirs to give to whoever they want to give . If youre giving that to somebody who is passing it to a foreign adversary who is targeting our elections, how is that possibly okay . Reporter is it a crime . Whether or not it is a crime, it is unequivocably unpatriotic. Reporter by the time manafort was charged, he was no longer on the case. July 21st, 2016, the summer before the election, trump is a disaster. And then one week later you open that crossfire hurricane investigation. I mean, it just looks like you saw a way to stop donald trump from becoming president of the united states. I can understand why some people might think that, but they had nothing to do with each other. Reporter one week after strzok opened the investigation, lisa page texted him, trump is not ever going to become president , right, right . Strzok replied, no, no, he is not, well stop it. So why shouldnt Trump Supporters suspect you of using the investigation as a tool to take him down . What i would point them to are all of the investigations that have been done that conclusively prove that didnt occur. Reporter the Justice Department Inspector General found no evidence that political bias influenced the opening of crossfire hurricane. But it did find serious performance failures in the investigation of another strzok suspect, Campaign Advisor carter page, who was never charged with any crime. Is it sloppy work or is it f. B. I. Agents trying too hard to get something on members of the Trump Campaign . I dont think at all that it is anything improper. You get people who are overworked and make mistakes, inexcusable mistakes. Reporter attorneygeneral barr disagrees. The evidence shows were not dealing with just mistakes or sloppiness. There is something far more troubling and were going to get to the bottom of it. Reporter u. S. Attorney john durham is conducting a full investigation into the conduct of crossfire hurricane, which will include a reexamination of strzoks every move. Did you write that . I did write that, sir. It is a political expression. Reporter he remains branded, you might say compromised, by his Text Messages. The president has accused strzok of treason, lambasted him on twitter, and even ended his famous Helsinki Press Conference with Vladimir Putin like this. President trump if anyone watched peter strzok testify, it was a disagrees to the f. B. I. , it was a disagrees to our country. Reporter how does it feel to be in Donald Trumps cross hairs . It is horrible. It angers you. It scares you. Reporter that hasnt stopped him from putting one of the president s tweets, peter strzok is a fraud, on the cover of his book. You know it is going to put you back in the cross hairs . I do. Reporter is it going to be worth it . Yes. David, this is a threat we have not faced in our modern history. What russia is doing, what they did in 2016to attack our elections, to help trump, what theyre doing now to do the very same thing, is something every american ought to be thinking about and considering. Pauley Steve Hartman has the story of a man who took his private driveway public. Not long ago, dave got one of those Smart Security cameras. And almost immediately it captured a trespasser on his driveway. You get the alert, and you kind of have an immediate sense of anxiety, someone is going to do harm to me. That imminent threat a 4yearold on a joy ride. Every night, like clock work. Person at driveway, who is it, oh, its just that kid again. Youre interrupting my netflix. How old are you . Im almost 50. Reporter youre a little young to be doing the whole get off my lawn thing. I know. He went out on his driveway and wrote a message to the boy that basically said, kid, you win. The next day. You could almost see the look on his face when he gets it, and then he just charges into it. This was in june, and from that day until now, daves driveway race trac has remained. Whenever rain washes it away, he simply builds other. He now researches famous race courses for track authenticity. The guy is really serious about his sidewalk chalk. Make sure you get the intersection right. There is a chance youre more into this than he is . It is entirely possible. Lets call it a draw. This is quincy discovering daves latest creation. Before the Security Camera went off that first time, dave had never met quincy or his family, yet all summer he has been helping to raise the boy in this small way. It has been amazing. Quincys dad, josh. So we can be a part of Something Like that, to see the good side of humanity, it feels good. There are a lot of great dads out there, but the true measure of man is not how he raises his own kid; its how he raises the village. You totally won. And you can see your transactions and check your balance from here. You can detect suspicious activity on your account from here. And you can pay your friends back from here. So when someone asks you, wheres your bank . You can tell them heres my bank. Or heres my bank. Or, heres my bank. Because if you download and use the chase mobile app, your bank is virtually any place. So visit chase. Com mobile. Im a delivery Operations Manager in san diego, california. Pauley paris hilton, you probably know the name. But the person behind the name, maybe not so much. As tracy smith tells us, prepare to be surprised. [yelling] reporter by now you probably think youve seen everything from and about paris hilton. You know, the socialite who made a career out of being a dumb blonde. A reality tv star famous for being famous. A barbiedoll voice with nothing to say. That persona, she now says, was all an act. They sal sell wall stuff . No. Reporter what do you think the difference is between that character you created and the real paris . There are so many differences. With the character, it is mostly kind of this blonde, bubbly, kind of barbie airhead, and in real life, im the exact opposite. Im not a dumb blonde. Im just very good at being one. Reporter you actually knew what walmart was . Yes, i knew exactly what walmart is. Reporter this is the family home . Yes, it is my parents home. Reporter and these days, she is talking about a new film that describes a time in her life that she says was too painful to bring up until now. I feel like my parents were scared and they didnt want their reputations to be ruined. Reporter i wonder if some people are going to say, with all this going on in the world do you worry people are going to say, cmon, with everything that is happening, should i really care about paris hilton . I think when people see the film, theyre going to see a completely different side, and theyre going to see i am a human and i do have feelings and theyre going to understand me a lot more. And know there is so much more to me than what they thought. Reporter paris hilton, airie heiress was born to richard and cathy. They were strict, no makeup or dates allowed, but as a teen, paris had a wild streak, so wild that back in the 90s, mom and dad sent her to a series of behavior modification schools. How did your parents get to the point that they thought that that was the answer. What were you doing . I wasnt really doing anything. I just moved from l. A. To new york, and thats when my life completely changed, and basically i was sneaking out and going to clubs and not going to school and ditching class. And thats when my parents thought it was time for me w to go away. Reporter so in 1998, then 17yearold paris wound up at the Provo Canyon School in utility in utaa place for treatment of young people with mental challenges. But in her film, this is paris, she describes the place as more of a prison camp, with solitary confinement and physical abuse. So they made an example of you and they would choke you . Yeah. Reporter and hit you . Yes. And it is so weird to think of now because i buried this for so long, my emotions. So to think about what happened, its so weird for me to even be, like, how is this really real . Reporter we reached out to provo canyon. In a statement, they said, in part, that Provo Canyon School was sold by its previous ownership in august 2000, and they therefore cannot comment on the operations or Patient Experience prior to this time. And also, that they do not condone or promote any form of abuse. Paris says she never told her family about her experience there but suffered nightmares for years afterward. She would say things to me after, like, i still have nightmares. Still, in the middle of the night, i feel you know, she would say that. And i always take what people say with a grain of salt. Like i think, yeah, it did bother her, but it was our way of saving you. Reporter why not tell them when you got out . When i got out, i was just so grateful and so happy to be free, i just didnt even want to bring it up. I would rather never talk about this, just dont think about it. And in the moment i stepped out of that building, i decided im never telling this story to anyone, ever. Reporter you thought you would never tell . Tell it . No. And i didnt think they would believe it. Reporter after she left the school, paris hilton said she tried her best to forget it. She was a fixture at every highprofile event, and she got famous for all of the wrong reasons, like a 2003 sex tape scandal that made headlines. The sex tape happened after the school . Uhhuh. Reporter was there a connection there . That would never have happened if i never went to that school. Reporter why not . Because i feel when i got out of that school, i was so lost, and then i ended up meeting the person who did that. I never would have met someone like that in my life if i hadnt went through such experiences. And therefore i would never have put myself in that situation. But i just wanted love so bad, i didnt really know. I was so naive and i trusted the wrong person. And thats the thing ill regret for the rest of my life. Reporter but despite what shes been through, or maybe because of it, it seems paris is having the last laugh. She founded her own fashion and merchandise empire, and is reportedly worth about 300 million, a fortune built on selfpromotion. Youre like the patron saint of the selfie culture, really. Yes. Reporter do you feel pride or guilt about that . A little bit of both. Reporter she has lived so much of her life on camera, people think they know her. But at 39, paris hilton says she finally knows herself. You said you feel like youve been a kid for so long . Uhhuh. Reporter in what sense. Explain that to me. Ive always been a kid at heart. I never really wanted to grow up. So thats just how i was for so long. Maybe because i didnt really get to have a childhood. Really get to have a childhood. But now im all grown up. Pauley the song goes, when youre smiling, the whole world smiles with you. How to make those words true in these covid times is the challenge our jim axelrod takes on. Reporter i had to run to the Grocery Store the other day to pick up a couple of things. Watching the cashier behind her protective plastic partition, ringing up my loaf of bread and seltzer, i was hit with this surge of gratitude. No, she wasnt a doctor or nurse in a covid ward, but she was exposing herself to a lot more risk every day than i do. I wanted to express my thanks and make sure she knew how deeply i appreciated her essential service. So i locked eyes with her and smiled, the warmest, widest smile i would muster. She looked at me blankly and didnt say a word. It was almost as if she hadnt seen my smile at all. I was leaving the store when it hit me of course she hadnt seen my smile; my mask had concealed my gratitude. For the rest of the day, with every interaction i had with someone i didnt know, the gas station attendant, the kid behind the takeout counter, i made sure to tell them how thankful i was, my words replacing the smiles they couldnt see. But still, something was missing. Smiles are the grease for our interpersonal communications, our most efficient way to signal warmth, safety, empathy, compassion, or at the Grocery Store, gratitude. A nonverbal supplement to expand the limits of what words alone can express. Studies have shown smiles are actually contagious; they lift the mood of both the source and the target of the smile. And now covid has robbed us of this critically important tool we use to connect with each other. Weve been sad before as a country, living without smiles for a time in the aftermath of assassinations, terror attacks, school shootings. But this is different. Wearing masks is a structural change in the way we live. Covid has literally wiped the smiles from our faces. So keep this in mind as you go about your business for now, our words are all weve got, not just the ones we choose, but how we deliver them from behind a mask. Tone and inflection are the new smiles. Forget the facetoface world, in a masktomask world, the golden rule is that people cant feel what they cant see. Lets all be part of the solution and find other ways to smile at each other. Hai love doing it. The tou, hey jay. Jay . Charlotte oh hi. He hthat voice. Annie .
