First up on this wednesday morning, a check of our forecast. Mary lee standing by with that. Mary, good morning. Good morning to you len and michelle. And we are looking at unfortunately, another day of hazy and smoky skies. Now this morning, its not quite as bad as what we have seen even yesterday morning in comparison here. So those green and orange colors, yellow colors at least indicating that good to moderate air quality. But if you can see still some dots of red and purple and that indicates unhealthy air quality in spots for the north bay and portions of the south bay. And east bay. So because of the unhealthy air, the smoky and hazy skies, we have a spare the air alert in effect once again for today. And it has actually been extended through friday. So we are still looking at that smoke through the rest of the workweek. Daytime highs looking at right around where we should be for this time of year. 68 in San Francisco and 71 in oakland and 84 in san jose and 89 for concord. Well talk about the weekend ahead as well. Details on that coming up in a few minutes. Good morning. As we take a look at the roadways right now, couple of things to look out for this morning. Accidentfree. Thats the good news, but of course weve got these closures for the ongoing wildfires. To the San Mateo County area where highway 1 along the coast. Still is shut down both directions. Pretty much from pescadero down to the Santa Cruz County line. They still have closures along 35 at 84 over towards highway at highway 1235 tha honda road sustreets the area remain shut down until further notice. Well continue to keep you updated on that and let you know when they open these roadways. Ill check the north bay in the next report. Anne . Im anne makovec at the live news desk. And we have some breaking news from overnight in walnut creek. At least three people died in a car crash. This was on 680 north and the north main exit. For some reason, this vehicle left the freeway hitting a tree and then burst into flames. This happened just before 11 00 theres night and when authorities put that fire out, they found the remains of at least three people. There in the wreckage. Investigator were on scene for several hours this morning before they towed away the vehicle and it was headed to the Coroners Office where the investigation continues. The roadway has since been reopened. Michelle, back to you. Anne, thank you. This morning, on our fire watch, thousands of crews are fighting some of the largest blazes in state history. More than 1200 square miles have burned in the bay area alone. Thats roughly the size of rhode island. And its not even the peak of fire season. National guard troops are expected to arrive this afternoon to help at the front lines of the lnu complex fire burning in the north bay. That fire has killed five people and burned about 1,000 structures. This morning, its 27 contained. Evacuation warnings have been lifted for the city of healdsburg. And more people is also coming to the incident command post. Cal fire has deplayed the california conservation corps. There are now more than 2100 firefighters battling the complex thanks to relief crews from allover. Originally in the incident resources were definitely stretched thin. Since then had a significant number of additional firefighters and able to have the shift on and shift off. We were scheduled here to receive 12 National Guard hand crews with 150 people assigned to the crews. Fire crews also getting some help from the weather. The temperatures overnight cooled down and humidity was high. The scu complex east of san jose has overtaken the lnu as the second largest fire in state history. But crews are gaining some ground. The fire is now 20 contained and evacuation warnings have been lifted in fremont and morgan hill. Firefighters are focusing their efforts on protecting the heavily Populated Areas along the fires western and northern fronts. Farther into the fire zone a close call atop mount hamilton. The flames narrowly spared the historic lick observatory. However its still unclear if theres any unseen damage from the heat. And to the west in the santa cruz mountains, cal fire says 77,000 people have evacuated from san mateo and santa cruz counties. And this morning, seven people are still missing. The czu complex is now 19 contained and thats up from 17 yesterday afternoon. Less than 800 acres. The damage has been done. At least 443 structures are now gone. This map shows the area between Boulder Creek and bonny doon just west. The darker spots represent homes that have been destroyed. This morning, evacuation orders remain in effect in marin county. The woodward fire has burned around 3,000 acres and firefighters are especially concerned about the terrain and conditions in the northeastern section of the fire. Dozens of homes are evacuated near inverness park. They added to it with a morific you heren, you ve an hour to be gone. So weve all packed bags. Meanwhile, thieves have stolen valuable gear from one firefighter who traveled all the way from the rockies to help with the woodward wildfire. Sarah lee is helping with the fire in marin county and her suv was parked outside her hotel when it was broken into. Thousands of dollars worth of equipment stolen. This is the second time someone on her team had their vehicle broken into this week. A berkeley firefighter on the front lines has lost his vacaville farm to the flames. Mike shoekin was on duty when he got a text from his son telling him they had to evacuate. His farm was just a few miles you a way but when he got there, the water was cut off so he couldnt do anything. Instead, shoekin got to work protecting homes nearby. His farm was nearly destroyed except for the barn and he and his family had been building it for two years. To kenosha in wisconsin now. Protesters voice their anger for a Third Straight night over the shooting of jacob blake. The National Guard has been called in and armed citizens were in the streets vowing to protect businesses in the city. Blakes family says hes now paralyzed from the waist down. The department will only say cidestarted with a domestic dispute call. The state Justice Department has taken over the investigation. To campaign 2020 now. More than half a Million People are evacuating the texas and louisiana coasts as the storm approaches. Cbs Courtney Zubowski has the latest. Reporter time is running out to prepare for hurricane laura. At least 20 Million People are in its potential path. Th obously very seri st, big storm system thats going to come on shore in southwest louisiana about 1 00 a. M. De out the storm. Mggest fear is be too late them. Reporter storm surge of up to 13 feet is expected along the gulf coast. In some spots, water is already creeping up. Strong southeast wind for the three, four days will push it up like this but as you know its already over the street. Reporter from louisiana to here in galveston, texas, more than half a Million People are under evacuation orders. Orders that become more complicated during a pandemic. Courtney zubowski, cbs news, texas. And unfortunately, hurricane laura will rapidly strengthen and intensity into a category 4 hurricane before it makes landfall on the gulf coast. Watching that closely for you. Of course back here at home, we are dealing with unhealthy air quality all of that smoke due to the massive wildfires burning in our region. So a spare the air alert in effect once again today. And ill talk about how long thats going to last. Heres a live look with the Treasure Island camera this morning and we are looking at low crowds and areas of fog as we start off the day along the coast and right around the bay and even a gray start inland as well with that onshore flow. And thats kind of heing to mix out the air and that smoke in our atmosphere. Thankfully so. So its not as bad but through the afternoon, were still looking at that unhealthy air. Temperatures in the 50s and in the 60s as we start off the day. Concord you are at 62. Oakland at 58. Looking at 62 in livermore and 58 56 in San Francisco and 64 for san jose and looking at 54 for santa rosa. So checking air quality conditions. You can see a lot of those green and yellow dots. Thats good to moderate air quality thats so much better compared to yesterday at this time. So for the peninsula, redwood city, down through san jose, looking at moderate air quality this morning. And that includes the east bay from fremont, union city, pleasanton and across the tri valley, also for portions of the rest of the east bay from concord to walnut creek and danville. Looking at that moderate air quality this morning. Good to moderate around the bay from San Francisco to oakland but as we head to the north bay you can start to see the red do quality. Novato. San rafael. Fairfield, unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups to napa a little bit closer to lnu lightning complex fires. Well, because of that unhealthy air, were looking at a spare the air alert that remains in effect not just today, but now extended all the way through friday due to this smoke. So these smoky skies, we have upper level winds bringing oksm complex fire south. That heat dome traps the smoke and ash over the bay area and as we head through the afternoon, thankfully with that afternoon sea breeze, it could help to mix out the air and improve air quality conditions as we go through the afternoon. But again, still those hazy and smoky skies that will continue for us. So looking at futurecast winds, we are going to see breezy westerly winds 10, 15 up to 20 Miles Per Hour. So for the south bay, looking at 84 in san jose and 90 for morgan hill and for the east bay, topping out at 89 for concord and for pleasant hill. Around the bay, 68 San Francisco and 71 oakland and upper 70s to low to mid80s for the north bay. So another day of smoky skies as we look to tomorrow and for friday. Temperatures will be on the rise just a little bit here as we head through the next several days. Lets check in with gianna for a look at traffic. Good morning. Taking a look at the roadways on this wednesday morning, were looking okay as far as traffic goes along 101 out of the north bay. Through ma run county. Going to the golden gate bridge, some foggy spots this morning but overall traffic is at the accomplishment. 15 minute drive south 101 into San Francisco. Street closures though in ma run county. Highway 1 at bear valley ances drake evard and coastal traffic is limited to local traffic only. So again those are closures for the marin county area. Due to the ongoing wildfires. Lets take a look at traffic along 580. It is certainly starting to hold up here westbound 580 as you come out of tracy. Near mountain house. All way to north flynn were seeing speeds down to about 19 Miles Per Hour in some spots. So a littleowtherwindmill first a possible semitruck with a trailer. May have caught fire there. Starting to see some smoke there. It is over to the right side of the roadway but maybe a bit of a distraction and fire crews could be called out to the scene. Just a headsup taking 580 out of tracy and south 680 right before koopman road. Theres a crash with the right lane blocked.
