I know all around the United States but especially in california, some School Districts are having kids come back, some arent. As a parent, how do you feel about that . I mean, everybody wants kids to be able to go get educated, but theres anxiety. Yeah. I mean, i dont believe our kids are going back to school. I think its just a domino effect. Its just one School District at a time, until they all go. Fact that, like, me and my wife are really going to have to bone upn ur k at the same time, i know that the teachers at our school will be plugged in to trying to help them. Its just, what we should have done in this interim is reconceive how school works, because its not going to work the way these worked for a long time, you know. My kids definitely i would put my nineyearold up against any other nineyearold about donald trump knowledge and whats going on currently in the white house. She would be she would win that contest. When i was a kid, i just sort of listened to what adults were saying and later would ask questions of my mom. And so, i call my daughter an oldschool ear hustler. Well have a whole conversation about george floyd and Police Brutality, just while were on a tire swing. I was just spinning around in the tire swing, and she wanted a full explanation of what happened with george floyd and Police Brutality in america. And i was just like, aaahhh stephen wow. What does that feel like, to have that conversation . I mean, weirdly, it feels great, because i would rather have that conversation with her, or have my wife have it with her, than her to go through the world and not have had that conversation and have somebody else spring it on her. Stephen yeah. Well, you have been having this conversation publicly on cnn with your show, united shades of america, now going into its fifth season. For years now, its celebrated, emmywinning. How were you so prescient, to know that the United States would eventually have racial problems . laughter what was the hint . Well, i have these books in my house that have the word history on them . Stephen oh, okay. And i sort of read them. Stephen all right. Send me some links. I buy the books, and then i try to read the books, and then often, im like, hey, thats whats happening right now so apparently, according to these history books ive read, the United States was founded on White Supremacy and racism. Stephen okay. And the fuel of america is racism, and thats what keeps White Supremacy going. And until we actually redesign the whole system, this is where were at. Stephen well, that takes me to your first episode. On sunday, this sunday, it starts. The first episodes title is where do we even start with White Supremacy . W. Kamau bell, where do we even start with White Supremacy . First of all, i like that title, because it sounds like a bside from hamilton or something. laughter stephen sure, sure. Well, we start with accepting the fact that, as i just said, america is built on White Supremacy. That the whole history of this country started on genocide and slavery, and from that, everything thats built has been built on top of that. And been built in ways to make sure that the people who created the genocide and slavery, that them and all their descendents could benefit from it. So, its thats really, in the first few minutes of the show, we say, look, dont get confused between White Supremacists and White Supremacy. You know, a white supremacist is the klan or a neonazi, but White Supremacy is the fact th m thats the system of White Supremacy. Stephen we had ibram x. Kendi on the show oh, never mind, then. Stephen a few weeks ago ill see you guys later. laughter stephen you guys have a beef . No, no, no hes just hes smarter than me. laughter stephen he is very smart. And he was talking about how, sort of the roots of White Supremacy or the idea of even whiteness or racism as we think of it in a modern sense, started about 500 years ago, and it was all motivated economically. It was selfinterest. In order to set up, the europeans were taking over this land, and capturing and enslaving the people in africa, you had to have a rationale. Racism was created, as we know it, for that economic self interest. Yeah. Before that, i think it was like nationalism and tribalism. Like, nobody saw anybody as a race of people. And then, when they decided the only way they could sort of justify because they were, many of them were christians that this was the right thing to do, was to dehumanize people and say they were savages, like the native americans, or they were animals, like black folks. So i think they had to come up with a way to go, not only, this is what were doing, but its actually the right thing to do. Where healt you know, any number of modernday white politicians have said that, well, slavery wasnt that bad, black people actually had three meals a day and enjoyed it. Thats still a justification that happens. Stephen i know that your mom is in this season. Why was it important for you to get your mom in there . I mean, my mom is an 83year old black woman, which makes her an expert on racism, first of all, lets just be clear about that. But also, i put my dad in an episode of season three, and my moms been clear that, since he was in, she needs to be in the show. And shes been very and theyre not together, so it really creates problems for me. So, i was like, i think youll fit into the White Supremacy episode more than youll fit into the east l. A. Episode. So thats how we got her in. Stephen i know your mom is very influential about how you sort of see the history of the United States, and the way that black history has been ignored. What how would you explain her to somebody who hasnt met her before, like me . I mean, i i had a joke i did in my act, where i said, my mom was such a hardcore black woman, that i was 11 years old before i realized a cracker was also a delicious snack. Thats it. laughter so, my mom, growing up, was always talking about racism, White Supremacy, the man. Back in the 70s, it was the man. Talking about the man. Stephen yes. And she didnt shy away from talking to me about those things. Even to the point of like, the talk, that people say that black parents give kinds, i remember that talk. I remember when my mom took me to the store and said this is whats going to happen when youre in a store by yourself as a little black boy. So, my mom really made sure, she wouldnt let me leave the house without knowing that i was black and what that mean in the world. Stephen you have been deliberate about how you defined racism. Why is it important to be so specific about your definition and what is it if you dont mind sharing. Well for me, its not that its even my definition, its the definition that makes the most sense. For most of this country, the dictionary has defined racism as just when one race hates another race. But that doesnt make a sense for a definition of racism because this country, if a black person hates a white person thats just hate for the most part, but the system in place of White Supremacy means that when white people hate black people, the system encourages that hatred and puts black people on the bottom. So i think its important to think of like, prejudice is, i dont like that white guy, Stephen Colbert. Thats me hating you. But true racism means power behind it. And i think thats the thing we are trying to do with the show, is really to let people understand, that like, this isnt just about feelings. You can prove all this stuff. Racism and White Supremacy is statistical, you can look at it, its scientific. Now race isnt scientific, we made it up, as you said, but all the things that go into racism and White Supremacy, you can see. Tell me why youve changed your name now. Well, just because of everything thats going on in the world, its about time. We had wanted to change it for a long time, actually, and we started using dcx a lot and the chicks a lot when we could. We hoped it would catch on but it didnt. laughs so, in the moment, now, we just felt that it was right, and we didnt even have to, you know, have much discussion about it. We just all wanted to do it right away and, so, we did. Stephen well, thats great. Was it always going to be the chicks or were there other contenders for the name . We had to make sure we got our ducks in a row legally. But in the meantime, we thought the chicks would be the easiest thing but we had to entertain a few other names. One of the ones came up was our initials, that spelled out as men so wed go from the chicks to men. laughter stephen sure, sure, sure. Martie, emily, natalie, got it. Yeah, anything else . Well, we had names in the past that we would call ourselves as our alter egos, and we could have pulled those from the past. One was puss n boots. Stephen okay. There was already a band called that. inaudible stephen what was the last one . laughter woolly puddin. Stephen woolly puddin, okay. I like it. laughter a few people tweeted out criticism of the name change. Most people have really liked it, but already there are a couple of people out there. Sean spicer said, the dixie chicks are dropping dixie from their name and are now called the chicks but some women might find that offensive so i propose they go by the. laughter and some clown called senator ted cruz said, band trying to sell country records tells the entire south to bleep off. Adopts a term insulting to women instead. Any response to these fellas . laughter peace and love. Peace and love. Stephen the last time i saw you folks was 2006 for the time 100 dinner. And we didnt talk for very long, but one of the things that we could appreciate about each other is getting in some trouble for saying things about george w. Bush, because it was about a week after i had done my Correspondents Dinner speech in washington, and that was in 2006 when no one was really criticizing him publicly. And you guys had done it three years before in 2003. And i admire that you spoke your mind. And obviously, history has proven you right about being dragged into a boondoggle in iraq under false pretenses, and all the chaos and the tragedy that caused. You say its one of the best things that ever happened to you as a band, even though there was enormous backlash and there were threats against you and there was a boycott. Why was it one to have the best things that happened to you . It was kind of liberating that our audience knew who we were and what we thought. Weve always been very liberal, and spoken our minds, but that was just the one moment where natalie said that and the fire storm erupted. But, yeah, it kind of felt like, okay, the cats out of the bag and thats who we are, and how could we not be being patriotic to worry about the troops in harms way with the invasion . It was kind of ironic that people were saying not what she said but that she didnt support the troops. I think, if you ask people, i dont know even know if they know what she said, it was so innocuous, you know. Stephen well, you have a new way to talk about how you feel. The new album gaslighter comes out tomorrow. It was supposed to be released in may but then had to be put on hold because to have the covid crisis. What was that like to not create an album of new Music Together for 14 years, and then be ready to show to the world and have to hit the brakes at the last minute . What was that process or what was that feeling like . That was a huge bummer. I think mostly we were really excited for our fans to hear the new album, but we also were following that up with a tour. We were supposed to be on a tour this summer, our first show was supposed to be june 6. Both of my sons have bands, and theyre awesome musicians, and they were going to open for us. So, yeah, like the rest of the world, plans changed and things changed. But for the album release, i actually think its been good. I think we needed a few more months to really get everything together and release it how we want to but, yeah, its interesting. Well see, you know, how it goes. Stephen well, the single that some in the audience are watching may already know, is march march, which is a really powerful protest anthem. And it seems so fitting to the moment were in right now. When did you actually write that . A couple of years ago. It was one of the first ones we started. It took us a while to get the production on it and get it the way it is on the album. But the lyrics are basically written two years ago. Stephen thats extraordinary because, in some ways, what that song, seems like it was written yesterday. I know, its crazy. We did want to put it out at this time because we felt like it lent itself to the times right now and the black lives movement. But we had gone to march for our lives in washington, d. C. Seeing that entire movement, and it was the most powerful thing ive ever been a part of, and we wanted to write about that. And that was the impetus for the song.
