Cowan holiday weekends and big gatherings usually go hand in hand. But not this year. Its hard to follow the crowd when most celebrations are canceled. But that doesnt mean you cant celebrate apart. Our cover story is reported by Susan Spencer. How you all doing out there tonight . Reporter Country Music superstar alan jackson has sold 60 million albums worldwide. But there aint no cure for the Summertime Blues nget but last month, he did something perhaps even more remarkable. Were just glad to get out of the house and have a good time i think. [ cheers and applause ] down here in alabama. Reporter on backtoback nights in alabama, jackson played to the largest american concert crowd since the pandemic took over our lives, some 12,000 fans in total, all desperate for a break. Honestly, you could have sung jingle bells you know . They were so excited to see you. I heard rumors people drove from all over the country to see the shows. Reporter his drivein style shows took place in vast open fields with fans sitting in and on their cars, pickups and suvs. It felt just like a regular show. And people were i could hear em and they were loud and having fun tht. Reporter concertgoers were told to socialdistance their vehicles and protect themselves. But its not always easy when youre having fun. Might as well smile i think were going to see a lot of creativity, a lot of innovation in the way that people are getting their entertainment. Reporter dr. Dhruv khullar is a Health Policy researcher at Weill Cornell Medical College in new york city. He says americans may have to start redefining the meaning of fun. Whenever i think about large gatherings, theres a few kind of risks that i take into account. The first is, is the gathering going to be inside or outside . We know that outdoor gatherings are much safer than indoor gatherings are. Reporter as for events that cant be moved outside would you feel comfortable today going to a movie . I would not feel comfortable today going to a Movie Theater and i wouldnt recommend my patients do that at this time. Reporter would you go to an indoor concert . An indoor concert is even more dangerous than a Movie Theater. In a concert, youre usually cheering or yelling or singing along. That means a lot of those droplets, even microscopic droplets, are flying out of your mouth and theyre flying out of the mouth of the person next to you. Reporter youre really being quite a killjoy here. Im the first to tell you, i wish there are ways right now that we could flip a switch and for life to go back to normal. Nget normal these days is anything but, and you may as well get used to that mask. Most Public Health officials would say that anytime you have a large gathering, masks should be mandatory. Reporter even outside. Even outside. Nget how do you see College Sports returning . In a very complicated way. Reporter as commissioner of the america east conference in division i College Sports, Amy Huchthausen has a frontrow seat to this new world. Its been difficult, and theres still no clear answers or direction candidly, about where were going to end up this fall. Reporter i dont envy you your job. [ laughter ] big arenas could see big changes. Limited seating capacity, staggered entry points, compulsive cleaning. The only thing off the table is your lunch. The days of going up and grabbing food and exchanging food probably looks a little bit different as well. Reporter so you dont stand in a long line waiting for the hot dog. Youre probably not getting a hot dog that are sitting on a tray. That hot dog is open for things to fall in. That definitely will be modified. Reporter as for the action on the field can you imagine a World Without highfives, without hugs . Yeah, i find it hard to believe and im sort of glad im not splaying because i dont know that i could control myself. Reporter yeah, no spitting in baseball . [ laughter ] how do you control that . Right . Reporter how do you have baseball . [ laughter ] but Major League Baseball there will be, a the shoened 60game season starts in a few weeks. The nfl is targeting a september kickoff, and the nba intends to play without fans. Some events is may be without fans even if fans are allowed. Suppose i came to you and said, look, i have frontrow seats, Madison Square garden, your favorite performer. Are you in . I dont think so, not today. Reporter not today. A lot of this is how do people feel . Do they feel safe . Do they feel like theyre going to be able to keep their friends and their families healthy if they go out . I think a lot of people will have second thoughts about that and understandably so. Reporter then again, these folks seem pretty happy. [ cheers and applause ] so what was the Community Reaction when you announced yes, there will be baseball . They were ecstatic. Reporter Darren Musselwhite is the mayor of southaven, mississippis, where the annual youth baseball tournament, on hold since march, started up again in may. The number one thing was public safety. We studied the data. And when we got to the point we felt like it was safe to go back out, thats when we proceeded forward. Reporter what about fans who might be afraid to attend an event like this . I think it goes back to, this is america. Everyone gets to make their own decisions. If you dont feel safe going, dont go. Reporter the 100 or so fans who showed up followed protocol, families together, socially distanced, with limits on seats and on the number of players in the dugout. In mississippi, that same week, our governor opened casinos. So, just being a logical person, if its safe enough to go into an indoor casino, its certainly safe enough to play baseball outside. Reporter but as weve learned, in a pandemic, circumstances can change in an instant. I suppose individual teams would have to decide what they would do if one of their players is positive. Its a monumental task. Theres no way to paint that picture nicer. If a player on a team tests positive, the first step, i think, is to selfisolate the player and then to test everyone else on the team to make sure p reporter yet despite suchs. Dire scenarios, dr. Khullar holds out hope that one day, our carefree, old normal will be the new normal again. Look back at the 1918 spanish flu pandemic. After that, you had the roaring 20s, and so you could envision Something Like that happening again. Yeah reporter in alabama, last month, it was easy to envision. Alan jackson has no more concerts scheduled. But for a couple of nights, it felt a little like good times. cause i been working all week im tired and falling asleep i wanna have gun good times add some resistance. Sara, your movie plus trial is about to expire. Do you want to continue or cancel . Capital one knows life doesnt update you about your credit card. So meet eno. Cowan for just about all of his 98 years, carl reiner made people laugh. He died this past monday. Tributes have been pouring in all week, including this one from our mo rocca. The first thing in the morning, before id have coffee, id read the obits. Reporter seriously. Yes. If im not in it, ill have breakfast. Reporter even when discussing something grim. I think about how id like to go, what a show this would be if i was talking to you [ laughter ] reporter carl reiner, who died last week at 98, couldnt help but sound sunny. He was rare in that i cant remember him being in a bad mood or him telling me about a bad mood. Reporter legendary tv writer and producer norman lear, now 97, was Close Friends with reiner for more than 50 years. This may be a little hokie, but what do you think kept him going so long . The same thing that keeps me going so long. We wont like getting up in the morning. [ laughter ] and he missed it today. He missed it today. Reporter carl reiner didnt miss a lot. One of television comedys founding fathers, reiner first came into our homes as a featured player on your show of shows. If theres one thing ive learned being superintendent of this hospital for the last 16 years, this, that this is a hospital and not an Experimental Laboratory [ laughter ] reporter on your show of shows he was second banana to sid seeder. [ laughter ] sid ceasar. [ laughter ] i understand that use is a reporter youse is a reporter. Look, boy, we dont like reporters. [ laughter ] reporter what made him so good in that role . Carl had no need to be the principal in anything. A lot of comics do. And so, he could be very funny as a sidekick and a straight man. The Dick Van Dyke show. Reporter ryan serbest known for creating the Dick Van Dyke show which began airing on cbs in 1961. It starred Dick Van Dyke as the head writer of a fictional tv program. Hes the ed had writer of the the alan brady show. Oh, shoot. Is that still on . Reporter reiner played the blowhard host. Hi there. Remember me . [ laughter ] a mench. The greatest human being i ever met in my life. Unique. Irreplaceable man. For some reason, carl had a deep understanding about Human Behavior and what motivated people to do what they do. At the very end of the show, i didnt have handle myself too well with that patrick rat. Oh, he got you to Say Something embarrassing, didnt he . What was it . That alan brady is bald. [ laughter ] i found myself going to his office for answers about life, about raidin my kids, about family, and i learned so much from him. He kind of created me along with creating rob petrie. Finders keepers losers weepers and because thats true youre mine now you wonderful you why did you mess up my hair . I like to. [ laughter ] [ applause ] so, you think that you youve got trouble, well, troubles a bubble. So tell old mr. Trouble to get lost. Reporter Dick Van Dyke graced us with some of the little known lyrics to the shows theme. A frown smile is just a frown thats turned upside down and dont forget to keep your fingers crossed bravo. Thats not the faucet, honey. Rob, i dont care what you call it. My big toe is stuck in it. Of will [ laughter ] carl understood, theres no such thing as an adult. An adult is a costume and mannerism that a kid puts on in order to make it through life. [ laughter ] reporter there was no venue where reiner didnt kill. On stage call me mister reporter on tv. In this razzledazzle world of tell vation each new season sets the networks in a spain after am years i have a strong suspicion its a weird weird weird weird weird whiz were in reporter as a film director. And action reporter and sometime actor. At my age, i think ive earned the right to be sell fish. Reporter and remember comedy albums . He and mel brooks had one of the biggest with the 2000 year old man with reiner once again playing the straight man. All right. What do i do . Give me a boost. A boost . Somersault. Never leave your eyes off your face for this one. [ laughter ] and one and two and wait. Lets reconsider. Thats 100 carl reiner. And thats why he worked so well with mel, because mel will tell you himself, he needed to be up front. And carl was a champion from the sides. Reporter carl and mel were a match made in comedy heaven. But reiners lifelong costar was his beloved wife, estelle. I had a lot of hair in those days, black hair, wavy. Yeah. Reporter the pair reminisced about their first meeting back in 2007 with tracy smith. Really goodlooking, but typical, i said tall, dark and handsome. Youre adorable reporter ten years later after estelle passed away, reiner reflected. Having a good marriage, and good children, a good life is what you send out into the world. I had good children, nontoxic children, all have done great things and are continuing to do great things. And i had a marriage of 65 years. Thats the only thing that really defines me. Reporter theres a stereotype about comics being dark. Carl reiner was all light. A few day ago, norman lears soninlaw, our own dr. Jon lapook, sent us this video clip of carl reiner greeting lear at a party in 2000. Its strange to say it in the season of coronavirus, but he was a great hugger. Its a gem that little bit of photography of him hugging me, because that, in a sense, is the essence of carl also. Reporter it sounds like he loved being with his friends. There was never a better friend. The l. A. Times obit talked about pure joy, and thats what he brought to everything pure joy. The sun is pretty incredible. It makes lipton green tea better. Try our new gummies for 30 days and see the difference. Cowan like so many musical artists, grammy winner gary clark jr. Wont be touring anytime soon, but Kristine Johnson reminds us just what his fans have been missing. [ cheers ] reporter theres a certain confidence when he takes the stage. And from the first riff, its clear why. This is gary clark jr. And he wields his guitar like a man possessed. Im not like a religious person. I quit going to church a long time ago, but like, music is my religion, i guess you could say. He got to get up got to get up its calming. It can hype me up. Its everything. Reporter his mastery of the six string won him grammy in 2013. And has earned him three more this year. Hes played the white house and even toured with the Rolling Stones and eric clapton. Who, by the way, said that hes never seen a flow like yours. A flow like mine. Reporter uhhmm. Thats what he said . Reporter he said, i havent seen someone like that since jimi. Oh, damn. Pressure. [ laughter ] reporter jimi, as in hendricks. This 36yearold is still allowing comparisons like that to sink in, as he told us when we sat down with him at his ranch in texas. It doesnt really resonate until im at home, and im going, wow, this is real. You know what i mean . Like, all those dreams and hopes and aspirations i had as a kid and i thought were silly and i was scared to share with people because they might think that im out of my mind. Reporter gary clark jr. Is from austin, texas, the son of gary clark sr. , a car salesman, and his wife, sandi, an accountant. Mom still does his books and says her sons life changed forever at age 12. He got the guitar for christmas and then checked out a couple of books and just totally selftaught. He was upstairs in his room playing, and i told her, come here, listen to this. Got up, a little closer, opened up the door, and there he is. Hes hitting note for note. Reporter is that the day you realized . Hes got a gift. Yeah, and he said, sandi, hes really good. Reporter the very next year, clark was good enough to play gigs in the city, on school nights, no less. I used to feel guilty having him in nightclubs. And id look around, why do i have my 13yearold kid in a bar . Reporter why did you . Because he wanted to be there. I was raised real religious, baptist, go to church every sunday. Fear of god was very present in the house. You know what i mean . Reporter we caught up with clark on the set of his music video, pearl cadillac. I remember when i left home in that pearl cadillac reporter the song is about leaving home to go on tour for the first time and understanding everything his mother had done for him. I didnt realize what it took to be a parent. I was like, wow. Its work. He this put up with a lot, like a lot a lot. I was like, damn, thank you. Reporter for example, his parents put up with borrowing the family car without their permission. That earned him the nickname hotwire. I would steal my parents car, start the thing up and just go wherever i wanted from till whenever my dad fell asleep watching star trek until they woke up to get everybody ready for school. Today were joined by gary clark jr. Guess i would say local blues phenom. Reporter in 2001, gary, just 17, was featured on the local news. Well, you can all you want to i aint going to worry no more reporter that same year, austins mayor proclaimed may 3rd gary clark jr. Day. How do you measure success . I got a beautiful family. I got amazing support of wife who is, like, my backbone. I think thats success to me. Reporter his success has also allowed him to buy his own piece of texas hill country. This is my peaceful zone. This is my serenity. Its so different than when youre on stage and youve got your screaming fans up there and you got your guitar going. My life is so loud and noisy. And i like to hear crickets. At heart, im kind of a country boy. I like to be around nature and nothing. Reporter clarks ranch outside of austin is where he lives with his wife, australian model, Nicole Trunfio and their children. Until im gone yeah im going to love you just a little bit longer baby reporter its also where he recorded music when hes not out touring the country. And it was this land that gave clark the material for the title track on his latest album. This land is mine this land is mine reporter the song is about a confrontation with a neighbor who couldnt believe a black man could own this land. He said, i need to speak to the owner of the house. Im like, dude, youre talking to me. Go back where you come from we dont want we dont want your kind we think im 35. Ive been dealing with this since i was in elementary school. You know what i mean . Reporter thats a sad statement. Yeah, it is, but this its a reality. This land is my land reporter a reality clarks parents couldnt shield him from. Doing feces in the mailbox, the n word written on our fence. Reporter and what was the discussion in the household when those things happened . You just cant let that get to you. That other persons issue. Its not about that doesnt speak to you as a person and what kind of person you are. Thats someone else with the problem. I was born this way, and i love it. You know what i mean . And so for somebody to judge me based upon this and not ask any questions, not even try and get in here, it just made me upset. It made me sad. It made me curious about the future, kids and family. They tap into your emotions. Reporter so its not all about you anymore. Yeah. They hallmark things i didnt think i was holding on to. Reporter gary clark jr. , hes considered one of the greatest guitarists in a generation. But dont tell him that. Im not special. Im just a simple dude, simple dude from austin, texas, who picked up a guitar and cowan this pared down fourth of july has been tough on everybody, including jim gaffigan. Im sure it wasnt your most social fourth of july celebration, but at least you got to participate. I learned a long time ago that i dont need to be in a group to eat too many hot dogs and hamburgers. And if you arent social distancing with fireworks, youre gonna get hurt. I would say fourth of july is probably my least painful calendar notification ive received during the pandemic. Like many of you, i have notifications on my computer of upcoming events. Back in mar and april, many of those events had to be canceled, because parting in them would mean death for someone. Unfortunately, i didnt delete those events from my calendar. As a result, every couple of days i receive a reminder of what my life could have and should have been like. Ding. I was gonna perform at radio city music hall. Thats not happening. Oh, well. My careers over. Ding. Oh, thats right i was going to fly to l. A. To work on a movie that wouldve changed my career. Well, thats never gonna happen. Ding. Oh, our family was gonna do our annual summer beach vacation. Wow, we had to cancel that. And since it was crone, even the insurance didnt cover the cost of the rental. I ate the whole thing. Thats a reminder, im definitely going broke. Ding. Looks like were not attending the Family Reunion this year. I guess its not all bad news. And because we dont know exactly when this crisis is going to be over and we dont know exactly when the stock market will reach its bottom, weve got to be prepared for this to last a long time. If you assume that youre out of work for nine months but you end up only being out of work for. When it comes to parenting, youre a pro. You know reflexes are key. Not just any retinol. Accelerated retinol sa. One week is all it takes. Neutrogena®. Cowan it was 168 years ago today that Frederick Douglass spoke in rochester, new york, on the subject of the declaration of independence. He had a decidedly different take on what it meant, as Kelefa Sanneh is about to tell us. Mr. President , friends and fellow citizens the task before me is one that requires much previous thought and study for its proper performance. Reporter it is considered one of the greatest speeches in american history. It is the birthday of your National Independence and of your Political Freedom. Reporter delivered at an Independence Day event by abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The distance between this platform and the slave plantation from which i escaped is considerable. Reporter today, across massachusetts, communities come together to read the speech aloud during the july 4th holiday. Are the great principles of Political Freedom and of natural justice extended to us . Reporter the tradition started 11 years ago. What surprised me the most about peoples reactions is the sheer delight that many of our residents show when reading the address. Reporter keidrick roy, a ph. D. Candidate in american studies at harvard university, leads the readings in somerville, a suburb of boston. The conviction with which they read douglass words, its inspiring. Its infectious. Reporter Frederick Douglass escaped slavery in 1838 and fled north, becoming a leader in the fight to abolish slavery entirely. This fourth of july is yours, not mine. You may rejoice. I must mourn. Reporter if and epsz day was a time if Independence Day was a time to throw a parade, he would be the rain. He says, what to the american slave is your fourth of july . I answer, a day that reveals to him more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham. When douglass points to the injustice and the cruelty to which they were subjected in 1852, i couldnt help but draw an immediate line to our present day. When i turn on the tv, i see people of color still being subjecte to injustice and to cruelty. The civil war was still nearly a decade away, and slavery remained firmly in place. Douglass wanted to make it clear this was an emergency. Do you think that people hearing this speech in the audience in rochester in 1852 wouldve been surprised or shocked by any of it . I think they mightve been surprised or shocked by douglass boldness, but they wouldve been awed by his eloquence. Fellow citizens, i am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the declaration of independence were brave men. The speech begins with douglass being very congenial and chatting with the crowd, getting the crowd interested in what hes about to say. You boast of your love of liberty and then he levies a searing critique of the united states. While the whole political power of the nation is solemnly pledged to support and perpetuate the enslavement of 3 million of your countrymen. Though he does say that the constitution, for instance, is still a glorious liberty document. And then toward the end, he gives us a sense of hopefulness, of america achieving what it could become. Notwithstanding the dark picture i have this day presented of the state of the nation i do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation which must inevitably work the downfall of slavery. Reporter Frederick Douglass did see the abolition of slavery in 1865. I, therefore, leave off where i began, with hope. Reporter and keidrick roy says, the people of massachusetts will keep sharing his words and learning from his example. He seems not only that the country can do better, he seems convinced that the country will do better. Douglass is very convinced. He believes to his core that the country will do better. He is advocating for change, and he sees progress being made, but he doesnt let up. Thats one of the key messages that his speech has for us today. We also cant let up in our desire to agitate to change the country. [ abblasen fanfare ] cowan big naturalization ceremonies for new american citizens are a fourth of july tradition a tradition that needed some adjusting this fourth, as Steve Hartman discovered. The feeling of elation and delight and happiness. Were going to swear you in with the oath of allegiance. Reporter kwame asante came here from ghana in the 1980s. So youve been waiting 38 years for this moment . Yes, just for this. Reporter which explains the suit and tie and reverence for his new country. Just to be an american is like close to paradise and giving me so much opportunity. Reporter kwame works as a respiratory therapist at a hospital in new york. Hes in the thick of this pandemic but he says hes not scared, not now. Congratulations. Reporter now that hes a proud american. Youre a u. S. Citizen. Reporter even if i die today, im okay. Even if i die today, im okay. Reporter even if youre a citizen. Coronavirus has changed so many of our routines. Fortunately, theres no ruining of moments of love and pride, acceptance and gratitude. Thats why not even a drivethru ceremony can dampen the joy of being here to stay. Congratulations. Thank you so much. God bless america, all, always, always. Congratulations. Owan imagine what it might be like to sit down with the unpredictable comedian jim carrey for a few questions and answers. If you cant imagine it, dont worry. Tracy smith is here to show us. And a one and a two and a reporter even in times like this, a chat with jim carrey can be just a bit surreal. So here question go. Look how big my fists are. Geez you could hurt somebody with that thing. [ laughter ] [ grunting ] reporter i should just be quiet and let you go. Yeah, im sorry. You can handle. [ laughter ] reporter and it seems like hes just as quirky as an author. Carreys memoirs and misinformation is out this week, a novel memoir that hes worked on for eight years with cowriter dana vachon. Whats the process been like . Been different phases, but i would say, the last two years was deeply intense. And like, you know, the two of us in a room, you know, really, like, getting it right, getting it perfect. Sweating, sweating. Sweating every line. Reporter i know its fiction, but you really put yourself out there. I slice myself in two, lay on a rock, and let the dogs pull my entrails out. Is it my hair, bill . Are my teeth not white enough . Or like the great falls, is the bedrock of my life eroding beneath me . Reporter carreys memoir doesnt fit into a neat category, but it does share a few themes with some of his movies. He casts himself as a flawed leading man like in the one in bruce almighty. And in the book he lives in a the truman showlike world where its often hard to tell where the fantasy ends and the reality begins. Even though this is fiction, do you think we emerge with a clear idea of who jim carrey is . I think its the best way to get to to know me, to get to know my mind. Reporter long before jim carrey became a bigname comedian, hed make his family howl at their home north of toronto, often as a sidekick to his father, percy. One of the parts of the book that feels more memoir to me is when you talk about your childhood and your parents. You talk a lot about your dad. Was he your hero . My dad, i wish the whole world could know my dad. He was there for me. He was my champ. My absolutely champion. Reporter percy carrey was the one who helped young jim write his first jokes and drove him to his first club gigs. You said his basically saved you, because he brought you to this comedy youre not going to be happy until im sobbingoly. Sobbing openly. Thats not the plan. I swear. Reporter jim dads helped him put together a stage act. And found him a place to let it fly. He said, theres these places called comedy clubs. Maybe we should check it out. Reporter early on, carreys clear was aks monday bag. He killed in the club. But failed in an audition for saturday night live. It didnt crush you . Ive always had a nonsensical belief in myself and the universe. I didnt make it on saturday night live. Basically what happens to me is theres an automatic reset that my brain goes into where i say, i might not be able to make it through the front door like everybody else, but ill make it through the basement window. Ill make it through the back door. Ill find a way to par suit in on the roof and climb down into a window. I have faith. I think faith is better than hope. Hope walks through the fire. Faith leaps over it. Reporter and talk about a leap of faith. In 1990, he was cast on the wayans familys groundbreaking sketch comedy show in living color. The way ans gave me buy big break. I cant ever thank them enough. This is your brain on drugs. Any questions . [ laughter ] reporter carrey also writes about another big influence in his life. Thats the story of my life. No respect. No respect at all. [ cheers and applause ] you kidding . Reporter legendary comedian rodney dangerfield. To you, he was a mentor. He was a friend. He just loved me. He loved me and encouraged me and id get off stage and hed say, try some new stuff, huh kid . And id say, yeah. Hed say, good stuff. Good stuff. Thats great. Keep it up. He was completely encouraging to me. Reporter and when dangerfield lay dying in a hospital in 2004, carrey was with him. Theres a moment we talk about in the book where i saw him just before he passed, and i joked with him. And i laughed with him. And suddenly, the machines lit up in the room. And all the doctors and nurses ran into the room and said, what happened . What happened . What are you doing . And i said, i dont know. He seems like hes trying to speak to me. They said, this hasnt happened for a while. Theres been no activity at all. And i just knew, i he knew i was there. Reporter you kind of wonder what rodney would have said about these . For a while now, carreys been trying out other media like painting and political cartoons. And for advice, he says he listens to his daughter, jane. My daughter is one of the most brilliant counsels of my life, honestly. Shes so wise and so loving. Shes brought me back from the brink a couple of times. Reporter what do you mean . She just has chimed in with a few words that have really, like, opened my heart and settled me down and made me feel like everythings all right. Shes just wonderful. Reporter and shes also made him a grandfather. Hold on. I wanna take my teeth out. Grandpa reporter and maybe he had his grandson in mind for his latest movie. Its brilliant, sir. Thanks. For nothing. Reporter you poke fun at big studio family films in this book. And yet you just sonic the hedgehog. Yeah. Im fully aware of the hypocrisy that i am living in. And i mean to celebrate it. Reporter we may tell our children in years to come that there was a time, especially if it was during rush hour on a rainy day, when you couldnt get a cab in new york city for love or money. These days, the streets are mostly empty. Its estimated that 90 of the taxi business has dried up. Thats part of the reason why the city, with help from the national guard, started this program paying cab drivers to deliver food to low income housebound residents. Hello. Good morning, guys. Its 4 45. Reporter Mouhamadou Aliyu, a yellow cab driver of many years standing, gets up before dawn to participate. He knows theres a health risk. But this is my home, and yellow is what i do. Right now there is a pandemic. Our people, they are suffering. The city call us. We are answering the call. Reporter drivers earn 53 a route. Each route entails about six deliveries, and it means waiting in line for hours to get fully loaded. Lugging boxes of food up into crowded apartment complexes and then cleaning up for the next run. Its very hard. Its very tough. Its very challenging. Reporter nine hours, most of it waiting, two delivery runs 106 for a days work. Ive got ten more. Reporter not even close to the amount he needs to pay even a fraction of his monthly expenses. But were still hopeful. Were new yorkers. We dont give up. Reporter as a young immigrant from west africa, back in 1994, Hammond Hammond saw manhattan Mouhamadou Aliyu saw manhattan through rosecolored glasses. I came here with nothing. Nothing at all. This was my dream, as a yellow cab driver, to hold a medallion is like being on top of my game. This is where i want to be. This is the American Dream. Reporter in 2003, he became an american citizen. By 2004, he had learned that you dont get rich just driving a cab. To make money, he was told, you need to own the taxi. And to own it, you need a special license a medallion. Deciding to own a cab was the best decision i ever made. Reporter it was the city that paid for the ad promoting the deal as essentially riskfree. And it was new york city that has made literally billions of dollars selling these medallions at auction. When there are more buyers than medallions, the price goes up. That, in theory, is where even get rich. Ant cab driver could so i said, why not . But in order for me to place a bid to go for the medallion, i have to raise 20,000. Reporter how much . 20,000. But i have only 7,000. So i apply for a credit card. I get approve. I call them. I say, can i use it for anything i want . They say, yes, its your money. You can do whatever you want with it. Reporter then you had 13,000 that you had on your two credit cards. Correct. Reporter 20,000 cash down. Correct. Reporter on a 331,000 bid. Yes. That would be a loan. And you have to pay for the car. Gas, maintenance, all that. But still life was good. Even i would say life was great. Reporter within about a year, Mouhamadou Aliyus medallion had appreciated more than 100,000 and remarkably the value kept rising. And lucky me, i was able to buy a house here in the bronx, a threefamily house. So things was good. And then moving forward, the medallion value was going up. In 2013, the city auction medallion at 1,350,000. Reporter you heard correctly. Seven years ago, in theory, on paper, Mouhamadou Aliyu was a millionaire. The only reason that it was worth over 1 million was that there was some other immigrant who could be taken advantage of to pay that amount and not really even pay that amount but be trapped in a loan that would shackle them in debt for the rest of their lives. Reporter brian rosenthal, a reporter for the New York Times, won a Pulitzer Prize for his series exposing the taxi medallion scam. There was a city which sold the medallions, the brokers who collected commissions, and the bankers who wrote the loans and sold some of them for profit. And what we found in our reporting was that the value of the medallion went from 200,000 to over 1 million when the revenue that it had to bring in did not change at all. Ive been investigating reporter as brian explained in the New York Times documentary series the weekly, those medallions were moneymakers, just not for the drivers. Eventually, you realize that this wasnt by accident. Many insiders knew that the whole thing was a house of cards. The loans were never stable. They were never sustainable, and they were always going to be a burden that was unpayable after this bubble popped. And thats what happened. My name is Mouhamadou Aliyu. Reporter last summer, the new York City Council held a hearing on what was called the ownerdriver crisis. Mouhamadou aliyu was one of the witnesses. Every single day, every single hour, i think about taking my own life i think about suicide. The only thing that stops me is my four kids. If i do so, whats going to happen to them . I supposed to be a millionaire today, and im proud of it. And you guys are trying to take that away from me. Its not acceptable. Im calling on you. Please, please, have mercy on us. Help us. Reporter he speaks rather plantively of his status as a millionaire. Im a millionaire. Hes never going to see that day again, is he . No, hes not. He deserves it. He works very hard. Ive met hundreds of these cab drivers and they all work extremely hard. Reporter many of the drivers are convinced that Rideshare Companies like lyft and uber ruined their business, even without them, though, says brian rosenthal, the medallion bubble had to burst. How about the value of the medallion . Just six months ago, what was six months ago, the medallion is less than 100,000. Reporter less than 100,000 . Correct, sir. Reporter what Mouhamadou Aliyu still owes on that medallion, however, is more than 600,000. The chances that hell ever be able to pay that off . Slim and none. One slender ray of sunshine new york states attorney general is preparing to sue the city of new york to the tune of more than 800 million for misleading medallion owners. It could take years and even that sum wouldnt make the drivers whole again. And then, of course, theres the pandemic. Well over 50 cab drivers have died from the virus since march. These are some of their faces. Most drivers these days are staying home. The few available fares just arent worth the health risk. There is no more sleep. There is no night. At night, we chat on the whatsapp group. Were so worried. If nothing is done, when this pandemic will be over, the yellow cab industry will be over too. Well be finished. Cowan if you watched last weeks broadcast, you may have had some pretty strong opinions feelings about our opinion essay on socalled karens. Well, you werent alone. Our nancy giles certainly did. Reporter the last few weeks have felt like one gut punch after another, from the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and george floyd to that crazed 911 call by amy cooper. And all three events were, thankfully, captured on cell phone video for millions of people to see undeniable proof of the racist acts that some of us have lived with for a long time. So last week, when our broadcast aired an opinion essay on the term karen and karenshaming, i thought, really . okay. Heres the thing. When it comes to the karens, beckys, even kens of the world who dont like being called out for their gross behavior, always privileged and sometimes incendiary she calling the police on a 8yearold little girl. Are you sure its not because you dont want black people being out here . It has nothing to do with their race. The social media shaming is no more important than the horrific behavior itself. Calling someone a karen is isnt about sexism. It has to do with specific behavior and actions. A person who weaponizes their privilege. My taxes pay for this place. Yep. Okay. Just so you know. Black lives matter. Not to me, they dont. Reporter and by the way, calling someone a karen is not the worst thing you can say. People in this country have been called a lot worse for a lot less. They are the real victims here. Weve seen this karen connective tissue throughout our history when false accusations led to the murder of emettill, the conviction and imprisonment the scottsboro boys and were used as a diversion for susan smith, to name just a few. If you dont know, look them up. Thats the culture id like to can sell. Stop the lies. That boy whistled at me. He was black, it was a carjacking, and then he kidnapped my children 911 . Doors and windows opened, the leaves were greener. The sun seemed brighter, even pets looks happier.
