Statewide theres only a third of the rooms filled, leaving a large number of people on the street. Theres a large number that are still vacant, and many Homeless People who have not been accepted through the process they have set up. We dont understand it. Alameda county, and the comforted inn near the coliseum, funding is an issue. The federal government picking up 75 of the tab of a hotel room, but only if the person meets the criteria for eligibility. People in mission bay have noticed homeless tents popping up in the last few weeks seeing the tents, junk, and trash covering the sidewalk leading to 280 south. Nerve racking, dont want to hit anybody, and i have noticed in the past theres been a presence to help these people out. M. , murphy park in sunnyvale and Silver Creek High School will open for testing, and at 1 00 this afternoon, the site at the Vietnamese American Community center in san jose will open as well. Sanford revealing its plan to welcome students back to campus, but its not going to be a normal year. Most classes will remain online, and if they want to, freshmen and sophomores are able to return for the fall and summer quarters, and students will be assigned to a single or double room to maintain social distancing. Officials said the coronavirus exploding in san quinten could be linked to an increase in the city. Seriously ill convicts are being transferred to Alameda County. The county is also home to many people who work at the prison. One womans struggle to stay safely housed. Reporter Vanessa Bowman said if you dont think racism in housing still exists, swing by her neighborhood. Get in a car and ride down east 14th and go into east oakland. Renter here, but she used to own this home nearby. My oldest son went off to college from that house. My daughter was born in the house. My middle son graduated from high school in that house. Reporter during the mortgage crisis of 2008, her husband had a stroke, and he stopped working, cutting their Family Income in half. While applying for a loan modification, she fell victim to predator lenders, one of 35 homeowners in her neighborhood to lose their home to foreclosure the same year. It was nationwide, and that was the heart breaking part, too. We were literally losing the opportunity to pass wealth on to our children. Reporter she ran a day care in their first home and continued that in their new place until she found high levels of lead in the soil. I didnt want to take chances. Kids and lead are not a good mix. Reporter she qualified for assistance to have the lead removed through Alameda County, but she needed approval from her landlord to get the work done. Vanessa said the Property Owners never responded, and it eventually forced her to shutter her business. So no kids means no income. No income means no money to pay rent. Reporter that put her family at risk yet again. So once we got behind on rent, then, of course, came, you know, the notice on the door, we were candidates for eviction. Housing is the lynch pin of Structural Racism. Reporter uc berkeley is studying Structural Racism in housing. This experience is typical for many African American families. During the mortgage crisis, black families were 70 more likely to be targeted by predator lenders than white families. Many were located on land with a history of red lining. Red lines prevented black families from buying homes in certain neighborhoods and qualifying for homes. Its a system that adds up to a severe, persistent outcome in the bay area. Reporter east oakland has some of the highest numbers of lead poisoning cases in the country, and 7 of children under the age of six have tested positive for high levels of lead in their blood in vanessas neighborhood. Growing up in a predominantly black segregated neighborhood affects your health. We saw four or five years of Life Expectancy taken away from living in a segregated neighborhood.
